Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $190.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours. The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer. The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack. The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner Pros:

Texas Instruments TI86 Graphing Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $150.00 -- our price: $105.44 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Designed with power users in mind, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85 but with significant enhancements aimed at students of college mathematics, engineering, and science. The TI-86 includes a function evaluation table, deep entry recall, seven different graph styles with multiple line and shading options, and slope and direction fields for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 boasts 96 KB of user-available memory--three times more than the TI-85. There's also a new function evaluation table which shows numeric output for function, polar, parametric, and differential equation modes. The TI-86 runs with programs designed for the TI-85 and includes all the same matrix features, but with a new matrix editor that allows the user to view and edit matrices in two dimensions. You can also view multiple lists and attach formulas to those lists for automatic computations. A new aspect of the TI-86 is the ability to customize product functionality with machine language programs downloaded from TI's Web site. Besides the strong graphing abilities, the TI-86 also has powerful calculus features like integration, derivatives, minimums, maximums, roots, and arcs. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming. The 64 x 128 high-contrast pixel screen displays eight lines of 21 characters each plus two levels of display menus. With the TI-86, you can link to other TI-86s and TI-85s via the input/output port, and to CBLs, CBRs, and computers. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more Features Reviews (38)
I actually bought a TI-89 around soph year of college just to complement the TI-86. You see, the TI-86 is a SOLID engineering calculator. It's got fast units conversions, an intuitive and FAST menu system BUT it lacks "pretty print", handling of units for math (keeps the units throughout equations, calculators), and integration/differentiation with the variables in place (it doesn't just evaluate it). With the right software, the TI-89 is a very powerful math tool. I used the TI-89 primarily for theoretical math but came in handy for standardized tests as well. I would recommend getting both the TI-89 and TI-86 and start familiarizing yourself with both calculators before you start tackling tests. Check the rules and regs for calculators also - standardized tests should allow the use of the 86 and 89. Overall, the TI-86 is a solid math tool - notice I say TOOL because that's what it is. If you have no idea what you're doing in class, the TI-86 won't give you an A. My recommendation is to get both the TI-86 and TI-89. Also, slap in four 750mAH NiMH batteries. You will NOT regret this because these calculators drain alkaline batteries in half a semester of intensive use. We didn't have cheap NiMH batteries back in the day - TI actually pushed the use of Rayovac Renewals (remember those rechargeable alkalines that only lasted 5 charges?) and our other choice was NiCd. Forget all that. Slap in four Energizer 750mAh NiMH batteries and you'll save yourself a LOT of money in the long run. That means more money for video games and other forms of entertainment in college. ... Read more Asin: B00000JF53 |

Texas Instruments TI-83-Plus Silver Edition with Graph Link Cable Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $169.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review
Leery of "special edition" products, we regarded the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition with some healthy skepticism. It's silver--so what? As you may have noticed, in the post-iMac era, everything electronic seems to boast cool translucent or glittery casing. However, the features of the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition are substantial, offering useful, powerful extras at a remarkable value. While the mathematic and graphing tools are comparable to the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition boasts significantly improved speed and memory. Its processor is 2.5 times faster, and it has over 1.5 MB of memory--10 times that of the TI-83 Plus. These upgrades make the Silver Edition a significantly improved graphing tool, enabling you to work faster and save more of your equations and programs. Like the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition has a large, easy-to-read 64 x 96 pixel LCD that fits 16 characters and 8 lines. Altering the contrast of the screen is intuitively easy, as is the key layout and graphing interface. Mathematic tools are substantial, including viewing equations, graphs, and coordinates simultaneously; advanced statistics and regression analysis, graphical analysis, and data analysis; and tools for engineering, financial, logarithm, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions. The calculator is ideal for students in algebra, calculus, and statistics, as well as those taking the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I or II, and AP College Board Tests.
The calculator is also rich in tools for those studying biology, chemistry, or physics, including a pre-programmed periodic table. Other programs included with the calculator include a spreadsheet, organizer for phone numbers, puzzle pack, probability simulation, and CBL/CBR applications. The most exciting bonus of the Silver Edition is TI-Graph Link, which lets you connect the calculator to a computer and download programs from Texas Instruments' Web site (http://education.ti.com) and from enthusiast sites like www.ticalc.org. There you'll find thousands of programs and games for TI graphing calculators, as well as a TI-83 Plus tutorial, electronic guidebook, programming support, and discussion groups. The calculator uses four AAA batteries and one lithium battery for backup. All batteries are included, as well as a hard slide cover, the TI-Graph Link software and cable, and a remarkably readable 60-page instruction manual. Overall, the improved power, faster speed, and included TI-Graph Link for a remarkably low price make this a truly special "special edition," and we have to admit that the silver casing does look pretty cool. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Oh, sure, it does a little graphing and will calculate the tax on a new PS2, but what you can't see in this picture is that the graphing window has fewer pixels than the icons on your desktop (really). It is USELESS as a graphing calculator. But that's not all, the number display is so small that it's almost impossible to see the decimal point, and there are no comma's in the display, so you can't tell the magnitude of the number (quick, how many zeros: 000000000now how many: 000,000,000).Click on the picture to enlarge and look at the display.See the tiny dark smudge near the center of the bottom of the display?all the numbers are displayed to the right of that smudge in the bottom half of the display. This is something you won't enjoy, trust me. Look, I only want what's best for you, now go buy a casio fx-9750G. It's almost the same price and is actually something you'll use. Oh, and brush your teeth once in a while for crissakes.

HP HP48G+ Graphic Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $99.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Hewlett-Packard's HP 48G+ calculator can handle just about anything, and for a reasonable price. It allows you to enter equations the way they're printed on a page; construct graphs, plots, and drawings on a display 8 lines deep by 22 characters wide; and perform calculations from basic algebra all the way up to trigonometry and advanced statistical analysis. Best of all, anyone with the patience to learn some basic, object-oriented programming can take the device far beyond its built-in limits. We had to throw out all of our typical calculator knowledge to use the 48G+, as it uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN, also known as postfix notation). For example, instead of pressing 2 + 2 = to get an answer, you have to press 2 ENTER 2 +. Once we learned the basics, RPN made complex calculations much easier to enter, eliminating the need for parentheses in most calculations. Studded with buttons and crammed with labels, the keypad looks impossibly crowded, but the color-coded secondary and tertiary function labels are easy to find and decipher with a little practice. A row of buttons at the top is used to select menu items that are displayed onscreen, providing even more functions in a relatively small space. Ultimately, the 48G+ offers more than 2,300 functions, over 300 of them built-in formulas and scientific constants encompassing the spectrum of the mathematical and scientific fields. Using the 48G+ for a few weeks made it clear why this series of calculators is so popular; they're easy to work with once the initial learning curve is overcome. A complete set of built-in formulas coupled with the calculator's programmability give the device potential limited only by its 128 KB of built-in memory. If you need lots of RAM, its upgradable memory makes the higher-end 48GX a better bet; however, the 48G+ has plenty of storage for all but the most demanding students and professionals. It also comes with an infrared port for communicating with other calculators or a printer, and a connectivity kit--available separately--allows you to link the calculator to your PC for downloading new formulas and other data. --T. There is a grand debate: Texas Instruments calculators vs. H.P. Firstly, I am a H.P. user. No doubt, though, for most tasks the T.I. will be easier for most folks but for versatility, accuracy, durability and reliability, or if you are not IN a school which requires a T.I. you are better off with the Hewlett Packard . To be honest this is not a 'take to class everyday'. if you are in high school unless one is doing some really advanced maths. Even for much collage maths this calculator is 'overkill'. That written if you can use it, if it is not banned if you require a graphing calculator and have the time to learn how to use this one it is great, and one will find nothing as it for any price. If you are new to HP or RPN buy a book from Amazon titlled 'jump start The HP 48G/GX by Adams and Potter ... [dont throw away the user guide for use later]. As an aside Iloaned my 48G+ to my grand nephews 9th grade 'girl' and she likes it so much she has replaced her TI with it which suggests that I am in the 48G+ market, agan. Texas Instruments BA II Plus Advanced Financial Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $45.00 -- our price: $27.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review We're definitely taking this along with us the next time we shop for a house. Though it takes a little effort to master the collection of financial worksheets available on the Texas Instruments BA II Plus, you'll be glad you invested the time and money in this fine financial calculator. The BA II Plus operates in standard calculator and worksheet modes. The standard mode lets you perform common math as well as operations involving the time value of money--that is, applications such as mortgages or annuities in which payments are equal and evenly spaced. You can also perform trigonometric functions in standard mode. The more hard-core worksheet mode includes tables for amortization, bond, depreciation, and compound interest. If you're not familiar with such calculations, the very helpful user's manual will guide you through the process. All previous worksheet values are stored in memory, so you don't have to retype all the bond maturity or cash flow analysis figures. The average user who wants to calculate a basic loan payment will be more comfortable working in the standard calculator mode. We were using the BA II Plus tools for calculating basic interest and payment periods within minutes. Still, it's good to know that the more advanced features are available for those who require heavy-duty financial computing. Finance students and average users alike will find much to like in the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. --John Frederick Moore ... Read more Features Reviews (43)

Texas Instruments BA35 Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $28.95 -- our price: $20.89 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The BA-35 from Texas Instruments is an entry-level financial calculator with features that small-business users will likely find useful, but it may not have the power students need to easily solve complex classroom problems. The calculator is powered by a solar cell--there is no battery backup--and comes with a hard plastic cover that can fit on the back of the calculator when it is being used. The BA-35 is extremely thin, and although the button layout looks cluttered at first glance we rarely mis-keyed entries. The buttons are also sensitive enough that little force is required to get them to register input, yet not so mushy that simply brushing them causes mistakes. Unlike many of the calculators in this price range we've tested, the BA-35 actually comes with some useful documentation. A quick reference card with examples of important calculations like converting annual percentage rates to annual effective rates and entering statistical values is placed inside the calculator cover so you can always keep it handy. A small but surprisingly thorough pamphlet lays out the rest of the calculator's features, covering topics like compound interest and annuity calculations, and providing many illustrated examples for common procedures like computing mortgage payments or determining loan eligibility. It is possible to enable the calculator to display any number of fixed decimal places, and a percentage key can be used to easily add tax, subtract a discount, or determine a percentage ratio. There's also a Percentage Change key to easily find the percentage difference between two values, and Dedicated Cost, Selling Price, and Markup keys for quickly calculating profit margins. The BA-35 may not have the advanced statistical modes and other complicated features of a more expensive financial calculator, but its combination of portability, price, and practical functionality should appeal to small business users who don't need all the nice extras they used to solve hypothetical problems in business school. --T. Deficiencies: 1. Lack of algebraic logic, it just does the calculations in the order you enter them. 2. inconvenient memory- it takes several keystrokes to store or retreive from the memory (but you can use the 5 financial registers as memories). 3. wears out too easily- I have had the displays on 3-4 of these calculators go whacky on me. This is not a problem I have had with other TI models. There are lots of cool tricks you can do with this calculator, but even the Society of Actuaries has moved on to allow more capable models.

Texas Instruments BA Real Estate Financial Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $45.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Texas Instruments' BA real estate calculator is more powerful than its light, slim size suggests. Its face features keys that bankers, real estate agents, and students need most often to perform important calculations such as loan problems, payment schedules, and annual percentage rates. The BA's small keys are very responsive, and a shift button doubles the functions of many of them. Its small screen displays up to 10 digits. Text and symbols on the left-hand side prompt users for information in the order it's needed to complete a calculation; it's a snap to track how the data you're keying in will affect the equation you're solving. A backspace key let us easily correct mistakes without having to clear an entire line. We also were able to establish qualifying ratios and save local tax and insurance rates to memory for use in later calculations. Professionals can make calculations immediately, and students will appreciate the detailed instruction manual, replete with examples. Texas Instruments even included a set of handy worksheets with common calculations such as amortization schedules, various loan qualifications, and adjustable versus fixed-rate interest; printed on the worksheets are complete instructions for performing the calculations on the BA. Beginners will find this a snap to use without having to memorize multiple keys and abbreviations. The BA comes with a plastic cover that fits on the back of the device when the calculator is in use, and includes a quick reference card inside the cover in case you need a refresher and the manual isn't handy. --T. Texas Instruments TI30XIIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $21.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever. The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn't enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn't festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we've tested in this price range, it's still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. The calculator comes with a snap-on cover that fits on the back of the device whenyou are using it. The calculator carries a one-year limited warranty. --T.Byrl Baker Pros:
