5-0 out of 5 stars A word on documentation
Recently received my Voyage 200, and am very pleased with the unit itself. As others have commented, the lack of a decent printed manual is a drawback.

Knowing that the TI-89 Titanium is functionally almost identical to the Voyage 200, I called Texas Instruments and ordered a TI-89 manual. Customer service was very friendly, the manual was cheap ($4.95 + s/h), and it arrived quickly.

TI really should package this manual with the Voyage 200, and maybe they'll start doing it in the future. In the meantime, if you're getting a Voyage 200, just order an 89 manual from TI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing many statistic functions from TI-83
Really good calculator, everything works good, and is really really fast for huge functions. As a statistics major, im a bit dissapointed, because this calculator is missing alot of the random functions the ti-83 had. Everything else good, great buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars On a voyage.
I've had this calculator for a year and a half and I must say it has served me well. Unfortunately, it just pooped out on me. I tried to use it one morning and it would not come on. All it did since the last time I used it was sit on my desk. No drops or anything. I changed batteries and tried all the troubleshooting suggestions on TI's website. Still nothing. I'm still waiting for a response to my emails that I sent two days ago to the TI Cares support.
This thing was great while it lasted but now it looks like I'll have to get another one or maybe that newfangled TI-89 Titanium with the keyboard attachment. ... Read more

Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $190.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours.

The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer.

The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack.

The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner

    • Large keys
    • Easy-to-read LCD
    • Includes input/output port and cable
    • Allowed in AP, SAT, PSAT/NMSQT tests
    • Comprehensive, illustrated manual

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but user unfriendly
THis machine does it all provided that you learn how to use it well. I spent quite some time on this calculator and I am very confident using it now. However it could have been more user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY unless you are in calculus
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:This is a fabulous calculator (thus the five star rating), but inappropriate for students in math below calculus.Below calc, most courses that require a graphing calculator are geared towards the 83/84, so unless you are very comfortable with the 89 it may prove difficult to translate in-class activities onto an 89.Do not even THINK about buying this calculator unless you are taking calculus or a calculus-based course.Stick with the 83/84.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Calculator (For Calculus ETC)
Awesome calculator. Last class I used it for was Calculus for Engineering I. I like the "pretty print" which will display equations exactly as you would right them. The calculus tools, and the resolution of the screen, and the ability to scroll through previous equations.

My favorite T1 so far that I've used. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Designed with power users in mind, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85 but with significant enhancements aimed at students of college mathematics, engineering, and science. The TI-86 includes a function evaluation table, deep entry recall, seven different graph styles with multiple line and shading options, and slope and direction fields for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 boasts 96 KB of user-available memory--three times more than the TI-85. There's also a new function evaluation table which shows numeric output for function, polar, parametric, and differential equation modes.

The TI-86 runs with programs designed for the TI-85 and includes all the same matrix features, but with a new matrix editor that allows the user to view and edit matrices in two dimensions. You can also view multiple lists and attach formulas to those lists for automatic computations. A new aspect of the TI-86 is the ability to customize product functionality with machine language programs downloaded from TI's Web site. Besides the strong graphing abilities, the TI-86 also has powerful calculus features like integration, derivatives, minimums, maximums, roots, and arcs. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming.

The 64 x 128 high-contrast pixel screen displays eight lines of 21 characters each plus two levels of display menus. With the TI-86, you can link to other TI-86s and TI-85s via the input/output port, and to CBLs, CBRs, and computers. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Straightforward Calculator Available
I have the TI-89 Titanium and the HP-49G+, both are excellent calculators especially for programmers. But if I need to have mathematical models/programs, I use Mathcad or Matlab on my PC anyway, hence, I don't use the TI-89T or HP-49G for that purpose. Although there are fancier/faster models available now, the elegant keypad and menu system of the TI-86 is unmatched. For me and for most people I know (mostly fellow engineers), the TI-86 (and HP-48GX) are the perennial favorites. There is a dramatic difference between the TI-86 and the TI-89 as far as the menu system goes. The TI-89 has so many functions that the only way to really implement it is through a "windows" type menu system. The TI-86 on the other hand, has all the critical functions on the keypad - which is more efficient.(i.e. x^2, 1/x, complex, convert, log, etc..... are all built-in to the keypad of TI-86).

Indeed, the TI-89T and HP-49G+ are faster, has more functions, and has more memory than the TI-86.But for the day-to-day engineering and scientific calculations, I think the TI-86 is far more efficient and straightforward.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Graphing Design but problems with wear and tear.
i am actually shopping for an HP49 or similar. My experience with two calculators from texas instrument the TI86 and TI83+ has been positive and actually excellent if ease of use and graphics performance is the criterions. They are very well designed and the graphics as of the last generation TI's were superior than there previous hp48g.
However, the problem with both the TI86 and TI83+ is in how long they last. I bought a used TI86 in about 1997 and it lasted maybe one more year before it stopped working correctly. Recently a TI83+ I had which from the standpoint of functionality was a fine calculator stopped working after generally light use after 5 years. considering I used relatively infrequently, I wasn't satisfied.I used to own an early HP back in the 80's and it never stopped working for at least 6 or seven years until it was stolen out of my backpack. I was loyal then to them, but the last generation of calculators seemed to have some design flaws(hp48g) particularly around graphics. This generation seems to be immitating the TI's now and if they are built as well as the early ones, it is worth paying a little extra. But i haven't tried them out yet.
The last one I had(48g) was stolen or lost somewhere I believe but it continued working fine for maybe two years.
After spending onehundred plus dollars Iexpect more from a calculator in terms of wear and tear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful calculator
I bought this around mid 1997 and I'm still using it to this day.
It's helped me through AP Calc, Calc II, Calc III, Differential Equations, Advanced Engineering Math, SATs, GREs, Fundamentals of Engineering exam for EIT certification, and etc...

I actually bought a TI-89 around soph year of college just to complement the TI-86.

You see, the TI-86 is a SOLID engineering calculator. It's got fast units conversions, an intuitive and FAST menu system BUT it lacks "pretty print", handling of units for math (keeps the units throughout equations, calculators), and integration/differentiation with the variables in place (it doesn't just evaluate it). With the right software, the TI-89 is a very powerful math tool.

I used the TI-89 primarily for theoretical math but came in handy for standardized tests as well.

I would recommend getting both the TI-89 and TI-86 and start familiarizing yourself with both calculators before you start tackling tests. Check the rules and regs for calculators also - standardized tests should allow the use of the 86 and 89.

Overall, the TI-86 is a solid math tool - notice I say TOOL because that's what it is. If you have no idea what you're doing in class, the TI-86 won't give you an A.

My recommendation is to get both the TI-86 and TI-89.
Just FYI, I'm still using the TI-86 at work. The buttons show some wear and I lost the first line of the LCD because I dropped it in college. Nonetheless it's still chugging along.

Also, slap in four 750mAH NiMH batteries. You will NOT regret this because these calculators drain alkaline batteries in half a semester of intensive use. We didn't have cheap NiMH batteries back in the day - TI actually pushed the use of Rayovac Renewals (remember those rechargeable alkalines that only lasted 5 charges?) and our other choice was NiCd. Forget all that. Slap in four Energizer 750mAh NiMH batteries and you'll save yourself a LOT of money in the long run. That means more money for video games and other forms of entertainment in college. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Leery of "special edition" products, we regarded the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition with some healthy skepticism. It's silver--so what? As you may have noticed, in the post-iMac era, everything electronic seems to boast cool translucent or glittery casing. However, the features of the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition are substantial, offering useful, powerful extras at a remarkable value.

While the mathematic and graphing tools are comparable to the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition boasts significantly improved speed and memory. Its processor is 2.5 times faster, and it has over 1.5 MB of memory--10 times that of the TI-83 Plus. These upgrades make the Silver Edition a significantly improved graphing tool, enabling you to work faster and save more of your equations and programs.

Like the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition has a large, easy-to-read 64 x 96 pixel LCD that fits 16 characters and 8 lines. Altering the contrast of the screen is intuitively easy, as is the key layout and graphing interface. Mathematic tools are substantial, including viewing equations, graphs, and coordinates simultaneously; advanced statistics and regression analysis, graphical analysis, and data analysis; and tools for engineering, financial, logarithm, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions. The calculator is ideal for students in algebra, calculus, and statistics, as well as those taking the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I or II, and AP College Board Tests.

    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspEquation solver

The calculator is also rich in tools for those studying biology, chemistry, or physics, including a pre-programmed periodic table. Other programs included with the calculator include a spreadsheet, organizer for phone numbers, puzzle pack, probability simulation, and CBL/CBR applications.

The most exciting bonus of the Silver Edition is TI-Graph Link, which lets you connect the calculator to a computer and download programs from Texas Instruments' Web site (http://education.ti.com) and from enthusiast sites like www.ticalc.org. There you'll find thousands of programs and games for TI graphing calculators, as well as a TI-83 Plus tutorial, electronic guidebook, programming support, and discussion groups.

The calculator uses four AAA batteries and one lithium battery for backup. All batteries are included, as well as a hard slide cover, the TI-Graph Link software and cable, and a remarkably readable 60-page instruction manual. Overall, the improved power, faster speed, and included TI-Graph Link for a remarkably low price make this a truly special "special edition," and we have to admit that the silver casing does look pretty cool. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This calculator is probobly the best one that i have owned. You can create graphs with it, you can do equations, you can even do complex algebra/trigonometry/calculus on this calculator. Also, for the kids, there are games that you can download quite simply of the internet for you to play in case by any chance you get bored during math class. (Don't get any bright ideas!) I know this product is very expensive, but it is well worth it once you realize how good this product actually is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars great calculator
I found this to be a useful calculator in high school. It definitely helped me see a lot of functions and perform experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for calculators
I purchased my TI-83 Plus in 1999 and still have it today. I have never had any problems with it and can only remember changing the batteries 3 or 4 times. I've even dropped it from my 2nd story balcony by accident (more like a friend knocked it off a table on the balcony) and it didn't break. When I turned it on after it fell, my calculations were still on the screen!

It is easy to use and fast enough for all high school and college mathematics.

I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a workhorse of a calculator. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect - But gets it right where it counts - Buy it!
I bought this because my HP-48 is too big to lug around all the time. Keypad has nice tactile feel. Snap-on rigid case and slide-out plasticized 'quick-reference' guide are good (NB I haven't dropped it yet, but it looks fairly durable...).

I agree with other reviewers that the display of graphs is poor and the display clarity is bettered by other brands/models.In my opinion, the graphical display mode is only useful for viewing a quick sketch of a function.Text/number display is adequate. If the graphing of functions is important to you it may be better to look elsewhere and accept a compromise in other areas.

Most other brands in the price range claim 'algebraic entry - enter problems just as you write them on paper'.In my experience this is never the case - they all seem have exceptions and rules to be remembered and even simple operator precedence (i.e. 2+3x5^2=77, not 227 or 125) is not always got right.HP9g is very consistent and correct in this area. Implicit multiplication (i.e. key 2cos(30)instead of 2XCos(30) or 2A for 2XA) eases problem entry and makes a displayed formula more readable. No built-in complex number handling is a minus point for me. Reviews elsewhere show the HP9g maintains accuracy at extreme values of function arguments - reassuring for professional use.As a working engineer these points are far more important to me than having the best possible display.

Large memory for previous calculations - you can scroll back 25+ lines to check or edit and re-do a calculation.

Quick easy programming in a version of the BASIC language is also a plus point. IF,THEN,ELSE, GOSUB and FOR...NEXT are all supported. Also INPUT and PRINT ease data input and results display which is a major bugbear of most calculator programming.

As you've guessed I like this little calculator. It's no match for the HP professional models (at 6-10x the price...); the graphics might have been better left out; others have better displays: but as a everyday professional tool I find I can use it quickly and intuitively and trust the result where other brands in the same price range have left me wondering if I have really got the answer I wanted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Let's move along, there's nothing to see here.
I'm begging you not to buy this calculator. It is not just terrible, it is REALLY terrible.

Oh, sure, it does a little graphing and will calculate the tax on a new PS2, but what you can't see in this picture is that the graphing window has fewer pixels than the icons on your desktop (really). It is USELESS as a graphing calculator.

But that's not all, the number display is so small that it's almost impossible to see the decimal point, and there are no comma's in the display, so you can't tell the magnitude of the number (quick, how many zeros: 000000000now how many: 000,000,000).Click on the picture to enlarge and look at the display.See the tiny dark smudge near the center of the bottom of the display?all the numbers are displayed to the right of that smudge in the bottom half of the display.

This is something you won't enjoy, trust me.

Look, I only want what's best for you, now go buy a casio fx-9750G. It's almost the same price and is actually something you'll use.

Oh, and brush your teeth once in a while for crissakes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning, this is an HP without RPN
This is an HP calculator without Reverse Polish Notation entry. This is very similar to TI calculators with an algebraic-type notation input. Those of us who have used the very intuitive (in my opinion) RPN over the years, I am astounded that this is an HP calculator that fails to mention that it is not RPN; not on the box, not on the Amazon description, nowhere.I would return this calculator other than the anti-theft package is destroyed after opening (so it is not returnable), to only find it is a TI-like algebraic input.

If you expect RPN (which I did in any HP calculator) DO NOT BUY THIS! ... Read more

    HP HP48G+ Graphic Calculator
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $99.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Hewlett-Packard's HP 48G+ calculator can handle just about anything, and for a reasonable price. It allows you to enter equations the way they're printed on a page; construct graphs, plots, and drawings on a display 8 lines deep by 22 characters wide; and perform calculations from basic algebra all the way up to trigonometry and advanced statistical analysis. Best of all, anyone with the patience to learn some basic, object-oriented programming can take the device far beyond its built-in limits.

We had to throw out all of our typical calculator knowledge to use the 48G+, as it uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN, also known as postfix notation). For example, instead of pressing 2 + 2 = to get an answer, you have to press 2 ENTER 2 +. Once we learned the basics, RPN made complex calculations much easier to enter, eliminating the need for parentheses in most calculations. Studded with buttons and crammed with labels, the keypad looks impossibly crowded, but the color-coded secondary and tertiary function labels are easy to find and decipher with a little practice. A row of buttons at the top is used to select menu items that are displayed onscreen, providing even more functions in a relatively small space. Ultimately, the 48G+ offers more than 2,300 functions, over 300 of them built-in formulas and scientific constants encompassing the spectrum of the mathematical and scientific fields.

Using the 48G+ for a few weeks made it clear why this series of calculators is so popular; they're easy to work with once the initial learning curve is overcome. A complete set of built-in formulas coupled with the calculator's programmability give the device potential limited only by its 128 KB of built-in memory. If you need lots of RAM, its upgradable memory makes the higher-end 48GX a better bet; however, the 48G+ has plenty of storage for all but the most demanding students and professionals. It also comes with an infrared port for communicating with other calculators or a printer, and a connectivity kit--available separately--allows you to link the calculator to your PC for downloading new formulas and other data. --T. Byrl Baker

    Pros:

    • RPN can speed data entry with practice
    • Programmable--you can add nearly any feature you like
    • Infrared port lets you communicate with other IR-equipped calculators

    Cons:

    • Cluttered keypad

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Calculator
I started owning the HP 48S calculator 10 years ago when I was in high school. Been using it at Cal while I was there. Actually, almost everybody in EECS major owns an HP48. When the HP48G model came out, I gave the old one to my cousin and bought this one for myself. And I am still using it at work now. This calculator can do ALL the "calculatable" stuff and much more. Just try sin(i) or i^i or 200! (where "i" is the complex number sqrt(-1), "!" denotes factorial) on a calculator other than HP48/49, you will get an error. However, there is still many area that this calculator (or any other calculator) can improve on. One of the major one is doing the symbolic calculation--as in symbolic integration. But this requires much more cpu power than just a calculator. So I don't blame them for this. And as an added bonus, you can download thousands of freely available software to your calculator to make it into a PDA, remote control, play games or just expand it into a more powerful calculator(like calculating factorial of 1000).
Overall, I found this calculator to be nearly perfect. As a math or engineering student in any grade level, you should definitly own one of these. If you are thinking just to get pass your algebra class, than forget it! You won't even know how to add using the calculator before your semester is over.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am an engineering student and now see why my university recommends the TI-83.I'm sure the HP 48G has more features and is generally more powerful, but the user interface stinks. This is so hard to manipulate that I must carry a second calculator just in case I need a quick calculation. The RPN format is absolutly miserable and I have no idea why one would want this on a calculator.Another drawback is that the users manual falls FAR short when it comes to programming. The calculator falls even shorter and doesn't even have a If/ GOTO command for loop structures. If an engineer in training can't easily use this calculator, you'd better be a rocket scientist to expect much more.Unfortunatly I will have to buy a TI-83 to overcome the programming shortcomings, a move I should have made originally.

3 It is the best graphing calculator for the money.

7 The review is almost scary nearly suggesting this is not a device for mere mortals. Hogwash, my grand nephew who is blessed with the same average intelligence as I has used this calculator in middle school

There is a grand debate: Texas Instruments calculators vs. H.P. Firstly, I am a H.P. user. No doubt, though, for most tasks the T.I. will be easier for most folks but for versatility, accuracy, durability and reliability, or if you are not IN a school which requires a T.I. you are better off with the Hewlett Packard .

To be honest this is not a 'take to class everyday'. if you are in high school unless one is doing some really advanced maths. Even for much collage maths this calculator is 'overkill'.

That written if you can use it, if it is not banned if you require a graphing calculator and have the time to learn how to use this one it is great, and one will find nothing as it for any price.

If you are new to HP or RPN buy a book from Amazon titlled 'jump start The HP 48G/GX by Adams and Potter ... [dont throw away the user guide for use later].

As an aside Iloaned my 48G+ to my grand nephews 9th grade 'girl' and she likes it so much she has replaced her TI with it which suggests that I am in the 48G+ market, agan. [I triied the 49 but the keyboaard STINKS] ... Read more

We're definitely taking this along with us the next time we shop for a house. Though it takes a little effort to master the collection of financial worksheets available on the Texas Instruments BA II Plus, you'll be glad you invested the time and money in this fine financial calculator.

The BA II Plus operates in standard calculator and worksheet modes. The standard mode lets you perform common math as well as operations involving the time value of money--that is, applications such as mortgages or annuities in which payments are equal and evenly spaced. You can also perform trigonometric functions in standard mode.

The more hard-core worksheet mode includes tables for amortization, bond, depreciation, and compound interest. If you're not familiar with such calculations, the very helpful user's manual will guide you through the process. All previous worksheet values are stored in memory, so you don't have to retype all the bond maturity or cash flow analysis figures.

The average user who wants to calculate a basic loan payment will be more comfortable working in the standard calculator mode. We were using the BA II Plus tools for calculating basic interest and payment periods within minutes. Still, it's good to know that the more advanced features are available for those who require heavy-duty financial computing.

Finance students and average users alike will find much to like in the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. --John Frederick Moore ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A first look at the New Look TIBA2+
    VALUE PERFORMER GETS NEW LOOK
BA2+ users may like to know that Texas Instruments has released a "new look" TI BA2+ (allow me to call it it BA2+N), which may come with just more than cosmetic improvements over the popular BA2+.

    IMPROVED LCD DISPLAY
I was able to observed from a short distant away that the LCD display of the BA2+N,is clearer and more contrasty than the orginal BA2+ which I own. TI gets a thumbs up for doing this improvement quietly plus giving a facelift to this already highly regarded value for money business-financial electronic calculator.

DID TEXAS INSTRUMENT KILLED SOME BUGS IN THE BA2+?
Although I have not yet been able to test the BA2+N, TI may have also incorporated some improvements and killed some bugs on the popular BA2+. It is also probable that some improvements or new functions incorporated on the September 2004 released BA2+ Professional (BA2+PRO) may also have been also incorporated into the specs of BA2+N.

I would like to believe that some small but extremely annoying bugs of the "original" BA2+ has been quietly fixed on the BA2+N. In particular, I wish to see the "Reset" button nuisance which clears all user input formatting on the BA2+ has been done alway with. Most users of BA2+ would know that an accident user soft reset would return to the default Number of Periods per year P/Y to 12, this would upset the results of many TVM calculations when user has set the P/Y to "1" to use the calculator in "number of periods" instead.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT WOES ON THE BA2+
I was not able to exam a unit of the BA2+N to see if end users would still need a screw driver to unscrew and pry open the BA2+ casing just to replace the CR2032 battery. It would be nice if TI would incorporate a user accessible slide open battery compartment for the BA2+N or future upgrades of the BA2+.

    MY RECOMMENDATION
Would be buyers should get hold of the BA2+N or buy the BA2+PRO if you have a bigger budget. Budget conscious users could see that for the price of a BA2+ PRO, a screw driver and spare batteries, new users could afford to purchase for themselves two sets of BA2+N.

An advantage of having a spare BA2+N set on hand is that users could free themselves from the trouble of carrying a philips screwdriver and replacement lithium batteries to important assignments or to the examination centre.

HOW DIFFERENT DOES THE BA2+N LOOKS? I have downloaded the BA2+N JPEG picture from TI's calculator site and posted it to the Amazon's picture gallery.

IMPORTANT NOTE:I have commented on the BA2+N as an end user and I don't work for TI, HP or any of the manufacturers for the products which I have used, reviewed and posted my comments on the pages of Amazon.com. It is my pleasure to be able to share my first look at the BA2+N with you, thanks for reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars CFA users Choose TI BAII Plus
This review is directed toward those taking the CFA exams. The TI BA II plus calculator is more straight forward than the HP 12C for the range of questions asked on the CFA.The BA II Plus calculates faster than the HP, and is less expensive.

If you need the button quality and durablity of the HP 12C unit, upgrade and buy the TI BA II Plus "professional" - this unit has a brushed aluminum case and buttons similar to a HP 12C and costs around $50 - similar to a HP 12C.

When doing uneven cash flow problems the registers to the TI are all labeled so you can quickly enter data giving greater confidence with improved speed to your answers for NPV and IRR calculations.

I still have two or three HP 12C's around, but they aren't as intuitive as the TI for the CFA Exam.If you are taking the exam - the TI is the way to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars man, this thing's annoying
If not for the fact that this calculator is required for the CFA i don't know why anyone would buy it.
It takes many, many keystrokes to get simple things done, and let's face it, in the real world i'd much rather work out a complex NPV calculation in excel where i can see what i'm doing step by step rather than some arcane series of keystrokes where one mispressed key will screw everything up.
Also, my unit suffered from poor battery life, which i assume is a manufacturing defect.
A word of advice for students who can use a more advanced calculator: get a ti-83 or similar, learn to use it, and you'll be much happier. I find myself using the ti-83 i got in college rather than my financial calculator all the time. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The BA-35 from Texas Instruments is an entry-level financial calculator with features that small-business users will likely find useful, but it may not have the power students need to easily solve complex classroom problems. The calculator is powered by a solar cell--there is no battery backup--and comes with a hard plastic cover that can fit on the back of the calculator when it is being used.

The BA-35 is extremely thin, and although the button layout looks cluttered at first glance we rarely mis-keyed entries. The buttons are also sensitive enough that little force is required to get them to register input, yet not so mushy that simply brushing them causes mistakes. Unlike many of the calculators in this price range we've tested, the BA-35 actually comes with some useful documentation. A quick reference card with examples of important calculations like converting annual percentage rates to annual effective rates and entering statistical values is placed inside the calculator cover so you can always keep it handy. A small but surprisingly thorough pamphlet lays out the rest of the calculator's features, covering topics like compound interest and annuity calculations, and providing many illustrated examples for common procedures like computing mortgage payments or determining loan eligibility.

It is possible to enable the calculator to display any number of fixed decimal places, and a percentage key can be used to easily add tax, subtract a discount, or determine a percentage ratio. There's also a Percentage Change key to easily find the percentage difference between two values, and Dedicated Cost, Selling Price, and Markup keys for quickly calculating profit margins. The BA-35 may not have the advanced statistical modes and other complicated features of a more expensive financial calculator, but its combination of portability, price, and practical functionality should appeal to small business users who don't need all the nice extras they used to solve hypothetical problems in business school. --T. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for money, great longevity
I bought this calculator for my first finance class 12 years ago. While it does have some limitations such as not being able to work with uneven cash flows, it is still the finance calculator I grab when I want to figure something out in a hurry (I also own an HP 19BII and TI BAII Plus). The BAII Plus does do much more for only a few more dollars, but it is not as quick for simple finance calculations.Further, the BA 35 is still in perfect shape after much use, while the BAII Plus' display has begun malfunctioning and some of the digits do not show up at all now.The BA 35 is a great calculator, but ultimately, I would suggest the HP 17BII (which I have also used extensively, but do not own) if money is not a consideration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Underrated but Outdated
The Texas Instraments BA-35 is a calculator who's time has passed. It does allow the practiced user to ammoritize loans or value annuities with amazing speed, but today there are better options out there.

Deficiencies: 1. Lack of algebraic logic, it just does the calculations in the order you enter them. 2. inconvenient memory- it takes several keystrokes to store or retreive from the memory (but you can use the 5 financial registers as memories). 3. wears out too easily- I have had the displays on 3-4 of these calculators go whacky on me. This is not a problem I have had with other TI models.

There are lots of cool tricks you can do with this calculator, but even the Society of Actuaries has moved on to allow more capable models.

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtually everyone should own a business calculator.
Everyone who borrows money to finance a car or a house should own a business calculator. It can quickly compute in advance how much your monthly payments will be once you insert the amount borrowed, the yearly interest rate, and the number of payments. Or,if you prefer, you can insert the amount of the monthly payment you can afford and calculate the amount you can afford to borrow or the number of payments over which you will need to spread out the loan. You will also be able to protect yourself against accidental or deliberate errors made by the lender. For the purposes outlined above, the Texas Instruments BA35 is a very good buy at a bargain price. If you need a more sophisticated business calculator I recommend the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. ... Read more

Texas Instruments' BA real estate calculator is more powerful than its light, slim size suggests. Its face features keys that bankers, real estate agents, and students need most often to perform important calculations such as loan problems, payment schedules, and annual percentage rates.

The BA's small keys are very responsive, and a shift button doubles the functions of many of them. Its small screen displays up to 10 digits. Text and symbols on the left-hand side prompt users for information in the order it's needed to complete a calculation; it's a snap to track how the data you're keying in will affect the equation you're solving. A backspace key let us easily correct mistakes without having to clear an entire line. We also were able to establish qualifying ratios and save local tax and insurance rates to memory for use in later calculations.

Professionals can make calculations immediately, and students will appreciate the detailed instruction manual, replete with examples. Texas Instruments even included a set of handy worksheets with common calculations such as amortization schedules, various loan qualifications, and adjustable versus fixed-rate interest; printed on the worksheets are complete instructions for performing the calculations on the BA. Beginners will find this a snap to use without having to memorize multiple keys and abbreviations. The BA comes with a plastic cover that fits on the back of the device when the calculator is in use, and includes a quick reference card inside the cover in case you need a refresher and the manual isn't handy. --T. Some reviewers say that they have a problem with not hitting the keys hard enough will give them bad results. I have to disagree. Maybe they did some design changes, cause now it is not a problem to quickly skim and hit the keys for accurate results. All the wasted time spent with with my old financial calc. and a pen and paper. Well worth the 32 bucks I paid. Highly recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a Realtor & Loan Officer, I just LOVE this calculator!!!
During the many years going to college (I majored in Finance), working as a Banker, and now as a Realtor/Loan Officer, I have used many different financial calculators made by Sharp, HP, and Texas Instruments, etc. Each of the calculators I've tried has some good points and some bad ones. However, if you work in real estate, this calculator is made for you. It is loaded with excellent features specifically designed for this industry. I paid over $80 for my calculator when it first came out, and I felt I got every penny's worth. At the current price of less than forty bucks, it's absolutely a bargain!

Another reviewer on this page complains about the responsiveness of the keys. I simply don't have any problem like that at all. He or she must have had a defective one. I always tap the keys very fast, and the numbers come out all right.

In short, if you're heavily involved with real estate and mortgages, I highly recommend you to give this calculator a try! ... Read more

With the HP 17BII financial calculator, you can perform more than 250 business and statistical functions from wherever you happen to be. You can calculate loan payments, amortization, interest rates and conversion, internal rate of return, net present value, bond price and yield, depreciation, and percentages, to name only a few.

The bottom line on the two-line display shows the menu labels for the five major menus in the calculator: Financial, Business Percentages, Statistics, Time Manager, and Equation Solver. The menu keys allow you to shift between functions. The top line shows the numbers or letters you enter and the resulting calculation. Each menu has subfunctions and built-in variables for greater complexity. A beeper sounds when you press the wrong key, when an error occurs, or when you are late for an appointment.

The HP 17BII has 8,000 total bytes in RAM (6,750 bytes plus 1,250 for your built-in variables). You can monitor the available memory (both in bytes and percentages) by pressing shift-MEM. The calculator retains current functions until you press "clear data." If you accidentally shut the machine off, just turn it back on and your calculation will reappear. After 10 minutes of nonuse the calculator turns itself off, but your most recent information will still be there.

The HP financial calculator interfaces with an HP infrared printer (sold separately), allowing you to print tables, lists, and payment schedules whether you are--in a meeting or on an airplane.

Great calculator, and HP's excellent manual does the job. HOWEVER, it should last. The early HP25 could be dropped off the table, and I still have one - unfortunately the battery died, or it would be active still. The operator keys stopped working on my 17BII. Power came on, self-test wouldn't test, and the operator(+ - x, etc. ) had no effect. People should buy HP calculators because they work well, they are well documented and they LAST. No matter how marvelous a calculator is, if the keys don't work, it is less than a paperweight.Charles Elliott

Ideal for students at every level, from junior high school algebra to college calculus, the Texas Instruments TI36 packs a lot of punch in a small, inexpensive unit. This solar-powered calculator combines features for statistical analysis, Boolean logic operations, and unit conversions in one sleek package.

Math students will appreciate TI36X's ability to perform fractional equations and calculate angle units (radians, grads, degrees) when performing trigonometric functions. Everyone will find the calculator's English/metric conversions helpful.

The TI36Xs single-line LCD is a little difficult to read when the unit is lying on a desk, and users in need of graphing functions will have to look elsewhere. Overall, however, for a calculator in this price range, the TI36X provides enough power for most high-level math and science needs. ... Read more

There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever.

The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn't enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn't festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we've tested in this price range, it's still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. 4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2Durable and Inexpensive!
    Main Points:
I used this calculator for over 10 years before it finally stopped working, and I treated it fairly roughly (e.g.,coffe spills).I think others here have attested to the functionality of the TI-30, so I just want to emphasize that it's a tough little gadget as well. Yes, the buttons are on the small side and there is a bit of play, but this was never a major problem (although at times it slows down data entry). You can go to http://education.ti.com/downloads for a good overview of TI calculators, and you can scope out one of TI's major competitors at http://www.casio.com.

    A Little History:
This was also one of the first commercially available low-priced calculators that had two-line display and backspace to correct or edit data entry. The dual-power and scrolling display features were also once unusual. The top line (for data entry) shows up to 11 characters; you can scroll backwards or forwards up to 88! The bottom line (shows results) displays up to a 10-digit answer along with a 2-digit exponent.

    Individual Needs Differ:
From the reviews here, it appears that high school math is now more difficult than it once was.If you know that you're going to need graphing capability, then obviously this is not the choice for you.Similarly, the prevalence of laptop computers and math/stats software may obviate the need for some of the more advanced features.

    Recommendation:
The layout is very good and, for such a low price, it packs a lot of calculating might. However, high school (or college)students may want to narrow their choices and then ask their teacher which one has the most relevant functions for the next few years of math. Compared to twenty-five or so years ago, one can now get a lot more calculator for the money. Depending on your budget, therefore, you might determine that a calculator like this is sufficient for your short-term needs, but that you'll need a new one if you go on to more advanced stats and math.In any event, this is a durable calculator that works very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked great
I didn't take math my senior year of high school and didn't know where my calculator was when I started college.I bought this one because it was cheap, compared to the TI 83 that I wanted.I used it for 2 years before it was damaged (my fault, not a product defect).

I bought a cheap calculator to replace it and have been very disappointed. I plan on getting another calculator like these before my statistics class next semester.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Middle School
This is a rather basic calculator that is great for middle schoolers in pre-algebra and algebra courses for parts of the year. This works well for middle school purposes, but will probably need to be replaced with a graphing calculator midway through algebra and definitely for geometry. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

For math and science students at all levels, and for any home or office that needs algebraic computations from time to time, Casio has created the FX-115W Plus two-line display scientific calculator. An indispensable tool for students from high school onward, in lab classes, and for exams, the FX-115W Plus features a two-line display, complex number calculations, and an algebraic mode that displays the example precisely as written. It's useful in the household or office for calculating finances, converting cooking measurements, and anything else you think of when you wish you had a calculator at hand.

The clear, readable, two-line display exhibits 10 digits in large numerals, showing the problem and answer together and permitting better tracking of your equation-solving process. You can also call upon 279 built-in mathematical functions, many complete with engineering symbols, for a variety of tasks, including calculations in base conversions, logical operations, and standard deviation and regression analysis. Plus, you can key in and program formulas to save for future use.

The FX-115W Plus provides one independent and six constant memory keys. It has a pragmatic key layout, making this an easy-to-use basic scientific calculator offering the functions you'll need in a solidly constructed unit. --Barbara Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great calculator - needs better user guide
The Fx 115 MS is the most powerful non-graphing calculator I have used. It is ideal for non Math students who are required to take an intermediate college algebra class. Unfortunately the single sheet of instructions are insufficient for the type of student that would benefit the most from it. I have put up a web site for my intermediate algebra students that tries to explain to them how to take advantage of its many features: http://faculty.ccc.edu/jnadas/graduate/CASIO.fx115ms.HTM

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent calculator for general use and high school
I bought my Casio fs-115MS Plus-SR scientific calculator for $15 at Staples and have been completely satisfied with it.This calculator, in addition to basic calculations, has keys for functions in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, pre-calculus, etc.It weighs under 4 ounces with battery and cover, and the keys are big and reponsive. Most of the basic functions are intuitive, while you'll need to study the user's guide for the more advanced functions and modes.

Specifically I like the following features:

    - Lots of calculator functions as I mentioned earlier.

    - It has a solar cell and also a button battery, so during the day it uses solar power, while at night it uses battery power. There is no backlighting, though, as this is an inexpensive model. Also, replacing the button battery (LR44) requires unscrewing the back off.Luckily, the battery should last at least 2-3 years under moderate night-time use.

    - It has a two-line LCD display. The B&W LCD is very sharp and clear. The first line displays the formula you entered, and the second line shows the result.

    - Intuitive interface. The buttons are clearly marked and it doesn't take any time to get started on the basic functions.Things like square root and logarithm are also easy to figure out.Casio calculators have always had consistent user interface over the different models.

The one thing I wish were better is the cover, which is the detachable type.It takes a bit of effort to detach it.To Casio's credit, the cover can be attached to both the front (for protection) and back (for storage) of the calculator.

In short, the fs-115MS Plus-SR is a terrific scientific calculator for its excellent price. Its dual power source ensures usability in most situations.

This Casio is "permitted for use on SAT and PSA/NMSQT."

    Editorial Review

Once you get to a certain level of math classes, a regular oldcalculator just isn't good enough anymore--you need a high-functioningcalculator that can perform algebraic, trigonometric, and statistical problemsin addition to general mathematical tasks. The Texas Instruments TI-30XAscientific calculator can do this for you. It is extremely handy when it comesto figuring tricky fractions. It can add, subtract, multiply, and dividefractions when entered in a traditional numerator/denominator format. Thiscalculator can also do a variety of conversions, from fractions to decimals, degrees to radians to grads, DMS to decimal to degrees, and polar torectangular. The display screen holds up to 10 digits.

For high school orcollege students tackling advanced math, this is a great tool (and a thoughtfulback-to-school gift), and with more professors allowing the use of calculatorsduring classes and exams, it's a necessary one. Easy to use and easy to slipinto a backpack, the TI-30XA will soon become indispensable for both the seriousand the striving math student. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great simple calculator!
I have had this calc for roughly 7 years and i'm on my 3rd set of batteries.I mostly use my ti-83+ but whenever I need something quick or I can't use a graphing calc, I grab my trusty TI-30Xa!I love this calc!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Calculator, Great Price!
This is a great calculator for those who have problems with Trig or fractions. Allows advanced input such as: 5 3/5 + (20 32/33 X 105) - (34 + 3/8), and also converts fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. Will also reduce fractional asnwers to lowest terms. A perfect calculator. As for the reviewer that doesn't know what batteries to use, it says right on the back of the calculator next to the battery symbol.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the same product....(3 1/2 Stars)
This is the second TI-30XA I have owned. The one I owned before lasted 6 years and I was happy with the product; so happy that I bought the same exact product. This current one that I bought just about three months ago is not any good.It went dead on me after only 6 weeks!I was really hoping for the same great product, but I guess they have went downhill such as many of my favorite items. If my new one lasts half the time as my old one then my rating will go up-yet, we will have to wait and see. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product
Despite the over-zealous negative reviews, I ordered this calculator and couldn't be happier!!! (I wonder if they work for the competition?)

I am a business school student and originally started with the TI BA2 Plus, but was terribly disappointed, so I switched to a HP calculator based on the recommendation of two professors...I am so pleased that I did!

This is a solid device and has not failed me in doing complex financial calculations. This is simply the best calculator I have used and I encourage anyone looking for a workhorse capable of doing long, intense calculations to buy it immediately! You won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars One more gripe
Other reviewers have pointed out ways in which the 12cp falls short of the original 12c, so I won't repeat those. My gripe is that the case for the 12cp is complete crap. It's stiff and horrible. It takes considerable force to stuff the calculator into the case, whereas the old 12c case fits like a custom glove.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing....
At first glance, this thing looks great.Nice, updated design, amdthe color looks good. But then there is the Enter key "bounce."The orange function lettering is almost impossible to read. Some of the TVM calculations are slower.

It's great that they made the numbers on the display larger, but the display itself is DIMMER!Much harder to read in certain light conditions than the 12C.What were they thinking when they designed this thing???

For $19.95 this device would be a good buy.But not at the $80 that I paid before I returned it.

Do yourself a favor.Pass this one by and get the good, ol' 12C ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars replaced my TI-30 Stat
I used a scientic calulator for years. I bought the TI-85 my Senioryear of High School and even though I'm not yet in college (five years later) I'm still a nerd that likes to play on it. most of time I just use it for basic stuff I can still do with a new TI-30X I bought granted I can graph with it and I've been looking hard at TI-89 for no other reason than I can. (more than likely would be my next purchase if I did buy another one) the sad thing is resources for this calulator are limited seeing as it's been discontinued but you know it's still more powerful with it's computing power over my GF TI-83 plus. it just lacks the storage of memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Investment..
Its an excellent investment for engineers. The Calci helps a lot in mathematical calculations. It has a Huge number of engineering applications. Few applications which I found VERY Useful are

    (1) Inverse of a Matrix (2) Solving Quadratic and higher order Equations. (3) Plotting the graph of Algebric Equations which help in finding out the Maxima and Minina..

    regards,
    A Graduate Student

4-0 out of 5 stars TI - 85 Overall, a good graphing calculator.
With a large number of features and a huge range of functions, the TI-85 is a graphing tool that is well worth its cost.It is fully programmable, using a BASIC-like programming language.Texas Instruments discontinued this line of calculators however, and though they may have had their own reasons, I know of at least two flaws with this particular calculator. The first is that there are some bugs in its programming, such as its inability to convert negative temperatures. The second and much more serious problem is that the screen is not reliable.Roughly half of these calculators have one or more lines or columns of pixels fail after a few years of use.As long as you aren't paying retail price, however, the $$$it might cost for a used TI-85 is more than worth it.Enjoy. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars TI-81
If you need a graphing calculator for a calculas class this may do the trick but I recommend the TI-82r a higher model. This calculator did not have the features needed for my college class but it may be ok for a high school class. See what features you need and then buy it. The only good thing about it was you cant beat the price.
