Segway Human Transporter (HT) i Series

    Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: November 2002. World's first dynamically stabilized Human Transporter; forward and backward maneuvering guided by rider's natural motions.

The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a truly 21st-century idea. A two-wheeled electric vehicle that's practical, efficient, slightly miraculous, and an undeniably fun way of getting around, it's as different from a bicycle or motorcycle as the original personal computers were from their lumbering, mainframe predecessors.

    Control
In our tests, we rode the Segway HT in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Zipping along on the little platform was so steady and comfortable, we quickly forgot how much technology was at work to keep us balanced. The Segway HT moves forward with cues from your body language--the subtle leaning you use to balance yourself while walking or running. When you lean forward, the Segway HT goes forward. A walking lean produces a walking rate, a steeper running lean can bring the machine to its top speed of 12.5 mph. The Segway HT stops when you right yourself again.

Steering is controlled separately with a small twist-grip on the left handlebar. The Segway HT's two-wheeled design makes it quite agile--it can do sharp turns and turn completely in place. Sharper turns require slight leaning into the turns, as you'd expect, but the Segway HT helps by actively regulating turn responsiveness based on your speed. One small complaint: using a throttle-like control for turns instead of acceleration did take some getting used to, but the inconvenience was minor and went away over time.

Overall, we were surprised how quickly we were able to get comfortable on the Segway HT. A novice can be underway in seconds (with supervision) and ascending ramps and turning figure eights in minutes. After training and a few hours of use, a rider should feel comfortable with a wide range of activities.

    Riding
The Segway HT moves briskly along on both paved and rough terrain, taking ruts and potholes bumpily but with no loss of control, even for the beginner. Modest hills were ascended with ease and without much discernable effort. All things told, the Segway HT seemed rugged enough to provide reliable transportation in pedestrian environments ranging from rural trails to the sidewalks of a congested city. And utility aside, it's worth stating that the element of machine-assisted balance was a continuous delight. We simply had more control over our movements than we previously could have imagined possible. This was particularly true on downhill rides, where our body language had a degree of command over gravity so unusual that it produced a dreamy, floating feeling.

The Segway HT is not a medical device; if you can't easily stand upright or endure some jostling on varied terrain, it will not solve these problems for you. But while the Segway HT cannot provide balance that the rider doesn't already have, its responsiveness brings a subtle beauty to the rider's movements. We watched more experienced riders start, stop, swoop, and turn as gracefully as figure skaters. In fact, the machine's ease of use could create some overconfidence. The Segway HT has not suspended the laws of physics--its wheels need traction. While the machine will keep itself level under almost any situation we could imagine, a careless rider who drops a wheel over a curb, or tries to turn too quickly on a slippery surface, certainly could take a tumble. Segway advises that riders wear a safety helmet (like a bicycle helmet) and start out in the Beginner mode before moving on to the faster settings.

    User-Friendly Design
The Segway HT's controls are simple. A single round display on the handlebars shows either a smiley face (meaning "get on") or a frown face ("get off"). A graphic surrounding the face indicates the battery level. The Segway has no brakes--slowing down involves the same process as acceleration--and its gentle rate precludes any need for a speedometer. We timed its startup speed from the off position to ready to ride: pressing an encrypted "key" to the key port (the key looks like a large watch battery on a plastic fob), hitting the start button, and waiting for the smiley face to come up took a little more than one second.

This machine is clearly designed for close interaction with pedestrians. Its footprint is only a bit wider than a large man, so we were able to do things like ride comfortably in an elevator with another Segway HT rider and a pedestrian, with an almost disappointing lack of bustle or incident. The machine can haul 75 pounds of cargo and still support a 250-pound person, though you'll need touse the HT's soon-to-come mounted accessory bags for any serious buying trip.

    Usability
Having ridden a Segway HT, we think almost anyone would be delighted to try this machine. Inevitably, however, one must ask about how usable it is. Clearly, it isn't a car: it won't carry multiple passengers or much luggage, go long distances, or protect you from the elements. Still, we thought of many circumstances where the Segway HT could be a fun and practical alternative to other modes of transportation. We can see potential users as regular folks traveling to and from work each day, students and professors in college towns, city dwellers who take many short trips, retirees in Sunbelt resort communities, vacationers traveling with RVs, and people with easy access to nature trails and walkways.

    Well-Built Construction
We had the opportunity to look into the guts of the Segway HT in its pre-assembled state. Inside it was clean and simple, and the few moving parts, such as the gears, struck us as rugged and well made. There are no cooling fans; the circuits and engine are cooled through their contact with the platform's heat-drawing aluminum casing. Each finished HT is tested both at the software level and for quality riding on an obstacle course in the assembly plant. See the technical specifications for more information.

    Conclusion
We're convinced that anyone who tries a Segway HT will be smiling in minutes. The other advantage is that early purchasers will certainly be the first on their blocks to have one. But for how long? We think we'll all be seeing much more of the Segway HT in the future. --Erik Hammen

    Pros:

    • Very high build quality
    • Environmentally friendly, extremely energy efficient
    • Requires little storage space
    • Newness factor--you've never ridden anything like this before
    • Fun to ride, and looks cool

    Cons:

    • Purchase price may be prohibitive for many potential users, though the cost is partially offset long term by nominal upkeep
    • Laws regarding legal riding areas (sidewalk versus street) vary from state to state
    • Minor inconvenience: rubber plug-in protectors on the machines seemed a bit loose, flopping around a bit on the more rigorously used machines, inconsistent with generally excellent build standards
    • Accessories, like carrying bags and lights, will not be available until spring 2003

    From the Manufacturer
The Segway Human Transporter is the first transportation product to stand, balance, and move in the same way we do. It harnesses a unique technology called "dynamic stabilization"--the result of more than a decade of research, development and testing, and tens of thousands of hours in field trials--to constantly monitor and balance the Segway HT and rider.

The Segway HT allows riders to travel short distances in dense environments that would be prohibitive to other transportation devices. An amazingly elegant design makes the Segway HT a part of you, sensing subtle changes in your balance and responding immediately. The Segway HT has a level of maneuverability never before seen on wheels--it can balance in place, move forwards and backwards, and turn in place.

Purchase of a Segway HT includes a training session on its operation and features, in order to properly prepare a new rider for safe and enjoyable operation of this new technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review by an Actual Owner,
I own a Segway, unlike many of the silly people who have posted thus far. I have been delighted with my purchase from day one. Segway, LLC has the BEST customer support around and are always friendly and helpful. If ever there is a problem with your HT (and I've yet to encounter anything major) they dutifully- and quickly- respond!

Riding your HT requires a little training, it takes a few days to learn to let go and allow the computer to balance you! What a sensation, though! It's put a smile on everyone's face who's tried it. Older persons seem quite taken with these, it allows for more personal freedom when walking is too difficult and driving is not practical. Younger persons, such as myself, find them economical and environmentally friendly. They don't ruin lawns, emit anything, and make no noise.

Yeah, the price is steep, but then so is the new 2004 Porshe line. This, though, doesn't give off emmisions and costs as little as 14 cents a day to charge and use. Be wary, jealous people try to pass laws to ban them.

They are small, easier to manuver than a car or bike, slower than most marathon runners, and are perfect on sunny days in a big city. Just remember to give pedestrians the right of way!

Go get yours, or ask somebody (like me) for a demo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Small Miracles!
I LOVE my HT! I cannot express how much I love this thing. Finally, no more walking! I hate walking. Now all my troubles have disappeared. I don't even walk to the car anymore. I drive my segway right on out to the car, my driver sets me in my seat, stashes the HT someplace and off we go. I even ride it around my house. No more hurrying to the kitchen for a snack during a commercial, now I just hop on my HT and ZOOM, I'm there! I find shopping around town to be a breeze. I zip into a store, browse, buy and zip out. Just to warn you, though, most store owners frown upon bringing the HT inside, but I find that if you possess strong powers of persuasion you won't encounter many problems. My only concern is the lack of horn (or maybe I just can't find it). I find that having to raise my voice to shoo people off the sidewalk to be a real problem. If I had a horn I could pleasantly beep the bothersome peds out of the way. Riding the HT is such a thrill. I love the wind in my hair and the freedom from that infernal walking! I even took my HT on a hike! The trail was too steep to ride, so I just puttered around the parking lot until my companions returned. Now that I have my HT I find that I enjoy activities I once despised. Such as going along with my partner on her daily runs. I can now speed along side her shouting words of encouragment. I really do love my HT and highly recommend getting one for yourself, you WON'T regret it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a chance!
"A toy for rich people which does not improve human condition, November 16, 2003
Reviewer: An electronics fan from USA
I did not like the way this was first announced to the world on Good Morning America. They got lots of free advertising on the morning talk shows and I think that was wrong, there are many other good products in the world, first of their kind, inventions that help sick people, and they don't get free advertising. It's not fair. Sure it's unique but it's not something that helps to save lives, or help sick people, or anything like that. Why is the inventor of this so special that he should get free advertising? It's just an expensive toy for rich people.

I also did not like the way this was in the Fraser TV show. But I guess it belongs with that class of people, it belongs with a bunch of rich snobs. The thing with this device, since it is so expensive and portable, small compared to a bicycle, it would be easy to hijack so anyone who buys one should be willing to have it stolen, you'll be out 4 grand and bicycle thief's will be able to have a new career. "

To address the concerns of theft of this reviewer, each Segway HT comes with a set of three keys. Each one unlocks a greater ability of the Segway. But each set of keys is unique to the Segway! It has a 64 bit key code that works only for that Segway. So what's the theif gonna do? Oh wow! He's got a Segway but no way to work it!!! Well it's real useful to him now isn't it? What's he gonna do? Just roll it around??? Oh wow!!! I don't think any idiot would try to steal this... of course then again maybe you would.... ... Read more

The DCR-TRV33 is a spectacular option for those looking for great video and stills in a compact camcorder. Offering a 1.0 Megapixel CCD imager, this high quality camcorder delivers 10X Optical/120X Digital Zoom and Carl Zeiss optics for incredible picture clarity. Featuring1.0 Megapixel (Gross) Advanced HAD CCD Imager MiniDV Recording Ultra Compact Design Professional Quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar Lens 10X Optical/120X Precision Digital Zoom MPEG Movie EX Mode: Unlike earlier MPEG1 Movies, MPEG Movie EX will allow you to record uninterrupted to the full capacity of the Memory Stick media. USB Streaming: Stay connected with family and friends by broadcasting live video with audio, via the Internet with the USB interface.

You can even playback your favorite recorded scene stored on tape. It's like having your own web camera or video conferencing system. i.LINK(1) DV Interface (IEEE1394): A high-speed bi-directional digital video/audio communication between two compatible devices equipped with an IEEE1394 interface, including camcorders, digital VTRs, capture cards, and PCs. Progressive Shutter System: A mechanical shutter system that provides Progressive Scan performance while utilizing an interlaced scanning system, digital still images will be sharp and clear with excellent definition. InfoLithium Battery
When the action rolls, you need the power to capture it. Smarter batteries help you prepare.Sony InfoLithium Batteries communicate with your Handycam camcorder's AccuPower meter, telling you how much shooting time remains. And because they resist "memory effect," Sony InfoLithium Batteries do not prematurely reduce recording time. It's a smart way to be ready for action.

    Megapixel Performance
Of all the world's consumer camcorders, Sony was the first to break the megapixel barrier. Working with high-resolution recording and high-precision Carl Zeiss or Sony custom optics, the benefits are dramatic. You'll see amazing detail on everything you shoot. Every blade of grass. Every strand of hair. The names on the back of player uniforms. And megapixel resolution is also a great benefit in Sony's Digital still camera function (Memory Mode).

    Digital Still Memory Mode
Capture digital still images directly onto Memory Stick® media for easy transfer to e-mail, printing, or sharing with compatible Memory Stick devices. Digital still images can be captured while in Memory Mode, or images from the videotape can be captured onto Memory Stick media. This feature provides the Dual Function of having one camera for video and still images, and provides the user with a whole new world of imaging possibilities.

    MPEG Movie Mode
Originally found on step-up Sony Digital Still Cameras, Sony presents another camcorder first -- MPEG Movie Mode for select Handycam Camcorders. Capture MPEG digital video and store it directly to your Memory Stick Media. Movie length ranges from 5 seconds to the length allowed by the capacity of your memory stick with MPEG Movie EX. Take the "Best Of" scene recorded on video tape, for example -- the groom kissing the bride on the wedding day, convert it to an MPEG Movie and share it with family and friends via the internet.

    Super Nightshot 0 Lux System
Low light? No problem. Absolutely no light? No sweat! Now you can capture video even in total darkness (0 lux). Sony's NightShot system uses infrared light to capture images invisible to the human eye. You can shoot subjects like sleeping babies up to 10 feet away in total darkness.

    SteadyShot Picture Stabilization
There's a world of difference between experiences that are moving and the ones that are simply shaky. To encourage the first and prevent the second, Sony invented SteadyShot picture stabilization. It smoothes and steadies your images without degrading picture quality. Sony does it with motion sensors --- a more accurate system than many other camcorders on the market.

    The MiniDV Format
MiniDV, the most common type of digital camcorder, records video using the standard DV-format. It's the preferred format for broadcast-quality video, and it is also highly regarded for its high audio and still image quality. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. Tapes come in lengths of 60 and 80 minutes at standard speed (SP), with use of lower speed mode (SP) increasing time to 90 and 120 minutes while reducing resolution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent Sony digicam
I've owned a number of Sony digicams (most recently the PC110) and decided to upgrade for some new features like analog pass-through (hook a VCR up to the camcorder to capture directly to your computer). I first tried the TRV70, but returned it and got this one instead. The 70 is a very different camera...considerably larger and with much better stills, but more expensive. I decided to go with the 33 because I wanted something smaller. The digital stills from most camcorders aren't going to be anywhere as good as from a halfway decent digital camera, so not a reason to pay a lot more. I got the same size LCD touch screen (a nice new feature!) and one thing I like about this model over the 70 is that the zoom is not so fast! The 70 has the same kind of zoom control, but it's very touchy and it's very hard to do a gradual zoom. The 33 allows much better control. Well, unless you have a need to do really fast zooms. I prefer to have one that does not. I find this is particularly important if you want other people to use the camera...anytime I gave someone the 110 to use, they had problems with that touchy zoom! This is an issue on a lot of Sony camcorders, I really wish they would correct it across the board.

Image quality is good and I personally don't have problems with motor noise, it's pretty typical for camcorders this size. The 10x zoom is decent, I looked at the Canons that were 20X zooms, but their image quality was not as good. The touch screen is great for features like spot focus and metering. I find it a lot easier to use than the myriad of buttons all over the camera that most models use.

Another new feature is the ability to quickly check the battery life on the camera without powering it up. I've sometimes thought it was charged when it was not and missed being able to film as a result, so this will be a lifesaver! The Sonys are great about telling you how much time is left on the battery and the tape.

Overall, an excellent camera I would highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent camcorder in a power packed package
I would like to give my opinion and view on Sony TRV33 model. I know how important a review of a product

is. After a month of research on camcorders, I had two options Canon ZR70MC or a Sony TRV33. Both of these

models had their own good and bad points. But ultimately I bought the TRV33 because of the following

reasons which I think clearly surpassed Canon.

    Pros:
    1. Clear, crisp and detailed video.
    2. Best Image quality when compared to Canon.
    3. Excellent low-light performance when compared to Canon.
    4. Mind blowing Nightshot in total darkness, though in Greenish tint.
    5. Carl Zeiss Lens definitely has proved its name and quality.
    6. Image quality when downloaded on PC using a USB 2.0 was "excellent" both indoors and outdoors.
    7. The 1.0 MB still pictures are OK but not fair, best for sending an email.

    Cons:
    1. 10x Optical, but I did not get a chance to use beyond 10x. Technically anything beyond 15x Optical

would produce shaky video unless on a tripod.

... If price is a constraint, I would request my readers to also check the TRV22, but

purchase with a long term perspective and image quality and optics matter a lot when deciding on a

camcorder. Sony truly shines in that aspect.

    Good camcorder hunting !

3-0 out of 5 stars Forget about still image quality
Bought this camera thinking I would be replacing my digital still with a double-duty camera. 1 megapixel photos are sufficient for my purposes (1000-1500 photos per event ftp'd to a server), as long as lens and processor are quality. Don't think you're getting that here. I take close-up shots for auctions and the lack of a macro mode for these shots makes the images very grainy and dark. I can't comment on the video capabilities, but I'm taking this camera back to Circuit City and going back to a digital still :-( In my opinion, if the still image capability is going to be a feature on a digital video camera, the quality should at least be comparable to a digital still camera of the same megapixel rating. ... Microsoft Xbox Console with Controller S

    Video Game
    list price: $199.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Take the power and flexibility of a dedicated computer gaming system and combine it with the easy-to-use, instant-on format of a high-end console system and what do you get? Well, if you also add in DVD playback ability and broadband Internet connectivity, you get Xbox.

The advanced components inside Xbox make it the undisputed powerhouse among current game consoles. A 733 MHz Intel main processor and 233 MHz graphics processor from industry leader nVidia deliver photorealistic graphics in real time. A cavernous hard drive stores saved games and characters, making flimsy memory sticks obsolete. The built-in Ethernet port enables super-fast multiplayer online gaming over a broadband Internet connection. Four game controller ports allow you and three of your buddies to play at the same time, or you can use them for other peripherals such as gamepads, light guns, and who knows what else?

But Xbox has more going for it than fancy innards. The Xbox's Windows-based operating system is a breeze to program on, earning it grateful accolades from Electronic Arts, Infogrames, THQ, and other game producers. The less time developers spend struggling with the operating system means the more time they spend tweaking gameplay, which ultimately results in better games. And games are what it's all about.

Well, games and the fun of owning a green-glowing game console that looks like it came from Darth Vader's living room.--Mike Fehlauer

The Xbox Video Game System with Controller S includes the Xbox console, the popular "S" style Microsoft controller, and all necessary cables. A DVD kit (sold separately) is required to access DVD playback ability.

5-0 out of 5 stars xbox has more games than ps2
xbox has the best games ever. halo is not the only good game. people who say that are closeminded bastards that have never actaully looked at the selection. here are some good XBOX games. grand theft auto 111 grand theft auto vice city hitman 2 silent assain max payne metal gear solid substance star wars kotor panser dragon orta wwe raw 2 top spin jet set radio future midnight club 2 soul calibur 2 true crime project gotham racing mechassault halflife doom 3 half life 2 baldurs gate dark alliance beyond good and evil medal of honor james bond nightfire tom clancys splinter cell rainbow six 3 freedom fighters the prince of persia star wars jedi academy star wars the clone wars ssx 3 and more. thats more good games than i can list on ps2 ill tell you that. xbox has a nice layout nice black and green colors. it has the biggest controller. and it plays dvds and cds. gamecube cant play dvds or cds. but xbox plays both. it has 6 controller ports that means you and 5 freinds can play. ps2 has only a misreable 2 controller ports. and damm my playstation 2 always freezes up. my xbox never does and never gives me problems. my ps2 brakes down on me every week to month literally. its a peice of trash. and i just feel its to weak to satisfy anyones playing needs. and dont even think of gamecube all they have is kids games. whenever i ask what game for older people does gamecube have. everybody always says. RESIDENT EVIL RESIDENT EVIL. well i dont give a warthogs a-S ABOUT RESIDENT EVIL. AND THATS ALL GAMECUBE HAS ANYWAY SO WHO CARES. they got metroid prime which is good. but i rather play gta vice city. let me explain why i tell you to get xbox. DO YOU WANNA HAVE A SYSTEM THAT FREEES AND BRAKES NO. DO YOU WANNA HAVE A SYSTEM THAT PLAYS ONLY KIDS GAMES AND DOSENT PLAY DVDS OR CDS. NO. 0K THEN GET XBOX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best console of the top 3
The XBox dominates all other cideo consoles for the following reasons.

    1. Specs - This has the fastest processor, best graphics (If you think graphics don't matter then you probably don't see a difference between HDTV and standard TV), digital 5.1 audio (Great way to really get into the game), Built-in Hard drive (no expensive memory cards needed) 4 controller inputs (as opposed to PS2 with only 2) Built-in network adapter, heavy case and controllers with break-away cables (so you don't have to worry about pulling your system off the shelf, which is really easy to do with a GameCube)

    2. Value - All the stuff above for the same price as a PS2. Based on console specs alone the XBox is a much better value.

    3. Gaming Selection - Sure we've got Halo, but there's a lot more to Xbox. Mech Assault, Sega 2K3 games are all online, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is online, DOA3, DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball, Moto GP and Moto GP 2 are both Live games, Brute Force, Burnout 2 (It has an online leaderboard so you can see just how fast, or destructive you really are), Cel Damage, Serious Sam, etc.

    4. Upcoming Games - Halo 2, Perfert Dark Zero, Conkers Live and Uncut, XSN Sports, Project Gotham Racing 2, Star Wars: Kotor, and tons more, just check out the E3 reports.

5 Xbox Live - The leader in console online gaming. Sure, it's not perfect, and you need a fast connection to use it, but it's be best out there so far. The only game network where every game is voice enabled, and with Downloadable content to the hard drive it's an ever changing, ever growing online network.

    6. Controllers aren't as bulky as you think. The Original controllers, which many said were too bulky, have been replaced with the "s" controllers. These are much better for most people's hands.

    7. From what I've seen, it's more reliable than the PS2, not perfect, but much better than all other gaming systems. I'm very glad I bought this system

4-0 out of 5 stars The best console out there. Needs more games though!
I bought the Xbox on the day it was released which was luckily my birthday so technically I didn't buy it at all it was a present! Anyway before I owned the Xbox I normally changed consoles every six months. I've owned the Sega Megadrive, Nintendo 64, PS One and PS2. All I can say is since I've got the Xbox I haven't even thought about changing it!

A lot of people slate the Xbox for not having a legion of different games like the PS2. But to be honest the games Xbox does have are excellent and remember the console isn't even 2 years old yet. When the PS2 was first released the only games worth buying were Dead Or Alive 3 and Ridge Racer 4. But now look how many games are out. Things definitely get better with age and Xbox is still going through adolescence!!! In a couple of years the PS2 will be completely outdated and Xbox with have a complete range of different games to satisfy everyones needs.

The thing that makes Xbox stand out from the crowd is it's built in features. It has 4 built in controller ports which hasn't been done since the Nintendo 64 then copied by Nintendo GameCube. It has extreme online possibilities unlike the PS2 which virtually takes forever to connect to the web and Xbox by far has the best graphics next to the almighty PC!

I do agree Xbox needs a different range of games. At the moment it seems to only have racing games or fighting games! It needs it's own unique versions of historic games like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. Also it would be nice if Microsoft would quit sharing their games with the PS2 because they have to tone down their graphics to make the game able to play on the PS2. For instance look at the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer game released only for Xbox. The graphics were great then they released the sequel which was available on the GameCube and PS2. The graphics were awful!!!

If you've just bought an Xbox and are being put off by other people's negative reviews don't threat because the PS2's graphics are already fading so in a couple of years Sony will need to release the Playstation 3 to save their reputation.
