    Editorial Review

If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.

The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.

In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars Venerable, Compact, Elegant
I first began using this 'calc' in 1986. A commercial realtor friend told me this was what "everyone" (everyone to be taken seriously) used. I carried it on vacation, to church, to the supermarket, and everywhere, determined to learn in any spare moment its secrets and work its magic. The 12C's flat profile and compact size slips easily into a sportcoat pocket and you can rotate it continually in one hand just for fun! The User's Manual was not especially user friendly, but it was (is still?) a key to the treasure. It also can be easily slipped into a pocket, but I found the glossy pages annoyingly difficult to pencil-in notes.HP also makes the cheaper 10B II calc that the College for Financial Planning (CFP) recommends for their coursework. I often use it at work, and when teaching at a local college I am not inclined to require students buy the more expensive HP 12C. The more expensive HP 17B II leaves me cold. There is an elegance to the 12C that has not been surpassed. I own two 12C's just in case one is damaged! The Polish notation ('throw mother from the train a kiss' viz. 6, ENTER, 2, + {answer} 8 )is an eccentricity (like Uncle Fred's table manners) that is quickly embraced...a price for membership to the club. HP actually makes a version of the 12C that allows you to change this feature, but my guess is that it has never gained popularity.

5-0 out of 5 stars You really don't need it
I have had an HP 12C for 20 years.Yes it is wonderful calculator but you really shouldn't spend the extra money for it.

It is expensive because it was designed for programming and elaborate cashflow analysis.Yes indeed in the early 80s people used to program 100+ step programs in to these dinky but powerful machines.Nobody would do it today. We have spreadsheets for that.

The machine uses RPN (reverse Polish notation) so you have to get used to that, it has over 30 memories (I doubt you will ever use more than 3), the anachronistic programming capability and lots of funny symbols that I don't even know what they mean.My advice is to buy the HP B10.You can get it for half the price.Yeah its not quite the status symbol the 12C is but its all that you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had mine 20 years
I've had my hp 20C for 20 years.Still works great.Still does everything I want it to.

I'm stunned they still sell these things.Same design, same functionality, almost the same price (there were about $300 in 1985).What other piece of calculating electronics can claim the same thing? When these came out the Internet was called Arpa net, Personal computers came with 32k memory, floppies had 360k capacity, modems were 300 baud and nobody had "email". ... Editorial Review

We're definitely taking this along with us the next time we shop for a house. Though it takes a little effort to master the collection of financial worksheets available on the Texas Instruments BA II Plus, you'll be glad you invested the time and money in this fine financial calculator.

The BA II Plus operates in standard calculator and worksheet modes. The standard mode lets you perform common math as well as operations involving the time value of money--that is, applications such as mortgages or annuities in which payments are equal and evenly spaced. You can also perform trigonometric functions in standard mode.

The more hard-core worksheet mode includes tables for amortization, bond, depreciation, and compound interest. If you're not familiar with such calculations, the very helpful user's manual will guide you through the process. All previous worksheet values are stored in memory, so you don't have to retype all the bond maturity or cash flow analysis figures.

The average user who wants to calculate a basic loan payment will be more comfortable working in the standard calculator mode. We were using the BA II Plus tools for calculating basic interest and payment periods within minutes. Still, it's good to know that the more advanced features are available for those who require heavy-duty financial computing.

Finance students and average users alike will find much to like in the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. --John Frederick Moore ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A first look at the New Look TIBA2+
    VALUE PERFORMER GETS NEW LOOK
BA2+ users may like to know that Texas Instruments has released a "new look" TI BA2+ (allow me to call it it BA2+N), which may come with just more than cosmetic improvements over the popular BA2+.

    IMPROVED LCD DISPLAY
I was able to observed from a short distant away that the LCD display of the BA2+N,is clearer and more contrasty than the orginal BA2+ which I own. TI gets a thumbs up for doing this improvement quietly plus giving a facelift to this already highly regarded value for money business-financial electronic calculator.

DID TEXAS INSTRUMENT KILLED SOME BUGS IN THE BA2+?
Although I have not yet been able to test the BA2+N, TI may have also incorporated some improvements and killed some bugs on the popular BA2+. It is also probable that some improvements or new functions incorporated on the September 2004 released BA2+ Professional (BA2+PRO) may also have been also incorporated into the specs of BA2+N.

I would like to believe that some small but extremely annoying bugs of the "original" BA2+ has been quietly fixed on the BA2+N. In particular, I wish to see the "Reset" button nuisance which clears all user input formatting on the BA2+ has been done alway with. Most users of BA2+ would know that an accident user soft reset would return to the default Number of Periods per year P/Y to 12, this would upset the results of many TVM calculations when user has set the P/Y to "1" to use the calculator in "number of periods" instead.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT WOES ON THE BA2+
I was not able to exam a unit of the BA2+N to see if end users would still need a screw driver to unscrew and pry open the BA2+ casing just to replace the CR2032 battery. It would be nice if TI would incorporate a user accessible slide open battery compartment for the BA2+N or future upgrades of the BA2+.

    MY RECOMMENDATION
Would be buyers should get hold of the BA2+N or buy the BA2+PRO if you have a bigger budget. Budget conscious users could see that for the price of a BA2+ PRO, a screw driver and spare batteries, new users could afford to purchase for themselves two sets of BA2+N.

An advantage of having a spare BA2+N set on hand is that users could free themselves from the trouble of carrying a philips screwdriver and replacement lithium batteries to important assignments or to the examination centre.

HOW DIFFERENT DOES THE BA2+N LOOKS? I have downloaded the BA2+N JPEG picture from TI's calculator site and posted it to the Amazon's picture gallery.

IMPORTANT NOTE:I have commented on the BA2+N as an end user and I don't work for TI, HP or any of the manufacturers for the products which I have used, reviewed and posted my comments on the pages of Amazon.com. It is my pleasure to be able to share my first look at the BA2+N with you, thanks for reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars CFA users Choose TI BAII Plus
This review is directed toward those taking the CFA exams. The TI BA II plus calculator is more straight forward than the HP 12C for the range of questions asked on the CFA.The BA II Plus calculates faster than the HP, and is less expensive.

If you need the button quality and durablity of the HP 12C unit, upgrade and buy the TI BA II Plus "professional" - this unit has a brushed aluminum case and buttons similar to a HP 12C and costs around $50 - similar to a HP 12C.

When doing uneven cash flow problems the registers to the TI are all labeled so you can quickly enter data giving greater confidence with improved speed to your answers for NPV and IRR calculations.

I still have two or three HP 12C's around, but they aren't as intuitive as the TI for the CFA Exam.If you are taking the exam - the TI is the way to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars man, this thing's annoying
If not for the fact that this calculator is required for the CFA i don't know why anyone would buy it.
It takes many, many keystrokes to get simple things done, and let's face it, in the real world i'd much rather work out a complex NPV calculation in excel where i can see what i'm doing step by step rather than some arcane series of keystrokes where one mispressed key will screw everything up.
Also, my unit suffered from poor battery life, which i assume is a manufacturing defect.
A word of advice for students who can use a more advanced calculator: get a ti-83 or similar, learn to use it, and you'll be much happier. I find myself using the ti-83 i got in college rather than my financial calculator all the time. ... Read more

With the HP 17BII financial calculator, you can perform more than 250 business and statistical functions from wherever you happen to be. You can calculate loan payments, amortization, interest rates and conversion, internal rate of return, net present value, bond price and yield, depreciation, and percentages, to name only a few.

The bottom line on the two-line display shows the menu labels for the five major menus in the calculator: Financial, Business Percentages, Statistics, Time Manager, and Equation Solver. The menu keys allow you to shift between functions. The top line shows the numbers or letters you enter and the resulting calculation. Each menu has subfunctions and built-in variables for greater complexity. A beeper sounds when you press the wrong key, when an error occurs, or when you are late for an appointment.

The HP 17BII has 8,000 total bytes in RAM (6,750 bytes plus 1,250 for your built-in variables). You can monitor the available memory (both in bytes and percentages) by pressing shift-MEM. The calculator retains current functions until you press "clear data." If you accidentally shut the machine off, just turn it back on and your calculation will reappear. After 10 minutes of nonuse the calculator turns itself off, but your most recent information will still be there.

The HP financial calculator interfaces with an HP infrared printer (sold separately), allowing you to print tables, lists, and payment schedules whether you are--in a meeting or on an airplane.

A protective cover is included to keep your calculator dust-free. Batteries are already loaded, and the calculator is backed by a limited one-year warranty. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

Super durable and reliable: I've had this calculator since 1992, I used it for my BA and my MSc.It has outlasted 4 laptops.
    Batteries last a long time, but keep more handy.It uses LR44 (Maxell) equivalent to LR44H, L1154, A76, V13GA, LR44, AG13, PX76A, 675A, 303, G13A. 11.6x5.4 mm Size equivalent to 357, 303, SR44, S1154.
PLEASE NOTE: If you need Trigonometric Functions, this calculator is NOT for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK until the keys quit
Great calculator, and HP's excellent manual does the job. HOWEVER, it should last. The early HP25 could be dropped off the table, and I still have one - unfortunately the battery died, or it would be active still. The operator keys stopped working on my 17BII. Power came on, self-test wouldn't test, and the operator(+ - x, etc. ) had no effect. People should buy HP calculators because they work well, they are well documented and they LAST. No matter how marvelous a calculator is, if the keys don't work, it is less than a paperweight.Charles Elliott

5-0 out of 5 stars The best financial calculator around
Nothing else even comes close.None of that annoying 5 minute wait like the 12c while you stare at a screen that says "running".Also, the 17b2+ has been visually cheapened (cheap plastic, rather than the metal-like cover). This is the banking gold standard.Easy to use and very intuitive. ... For every application there is a calculator, and for financial functions, this is it. The HP19BII features four display lines with 23 characters each, plus6,500 bytes of memory. Offering over 450 business, statistical, andscientific functions, the calculator is also easily programmable for customequations and functions. Personal information management applications, currency and measurement unit conversions, and functions that help youtrack loan payments, interest rates, amortization, and internal rate orreturn make this calculator a must for all business applications.

Advanced users may find the calculator's functions a little dated. Itincludes the ACRS table for calculating depreciation applied to limitedpartnership assets, which was replaced by Modified ACRS (MACRS) in 1986.But many users will find that the extensive functions and programmabilitycompensate for this shortcoming. We especially appreciated the time anddata management functions like the alarm clock, calendar, appointments, anddate arithmetic, number lists, editing, sorting, and storing.

    Great device!
The best that I've had. Unfortunately, the battery cover is too fragile and broken.
The worst thing is that now this model from HP is discontinued

5-0 out of 5 stars Irreplaceable for finance professionals
Just have to log my support for this great calculator, similar to others I bought an HP 19B in the beginning of my college years (1984) along with all the related add'l manuals available at the time (marketing, banking, real estate,?) and have loved and used it ever since - despite religious use of Palm devices since their inception.Yes my battery cover broke also, but high tensile clear tape quickly remedied that. Unfortunately a mishap damaged the keypad functionality requiring a replacement.I'm estatic to be able to replace it so easily! May buy two to make sure there's always a backup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This calculator is probobly the best one that i have owned. You can create graphs with it, you can do equations, you can even do complex algebra/trigonometry/calculus on this calculator. Also, for the kids, there are games that you can download quite simply of the internet for you to play in case by any chance you get bored during math class. (Don't get any bright ideas!) I know this product is very expensive, but it is well worth it once you realize how good this product actually is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this product!

I found this to be a useful calculator in high school. It definitely helped me see a lot of functions and perform experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for calculators
I purchased my TI-83 Plus in 1999 and still have it today. I have never had any problems with it and can only remember changing the batteries 3 or 4 times. I've even dropped it from my 2nd story balcony by accident (more like a friend knocked it off a table on the balcony) and it didn't break. When I turned it on after it fell, my calculations were still on the screen!

It is easy to use and fast enough for all high school and college mathematics.

Perhaps if we'd had this calculator in high school we would have done much better in trigonometry. The Texas Instruments TI-83 is an ideal unit for any math student, combining powerful features for graphing and statistical analysis.

The LCD screen displays 16 characters over 8 lines. Though the TI-83's keyboard layout might seem daunting to those who've never laid eyes on a graphic calculator before, the helpful, if intimidatingly thick, manual will get you up and running quickly.

The TI-83 includes function, parametric and polar, and sequence plot modes. You can store, graph, and analyze up to 10 functions, 6 parametric and polar functions, and 3 sequence functions. The TI-83's Draw operations allow you to annotate graphs. Along with the advanced math and science features, the TI-83 also includes such financial functions as cash flow, amortization, and time value of money.

    5-0 out of 5 stars I love my TI-83!
I bought this calculator when I started high school and I have not needed a new calculator since. It has served me well for 7 years and is still going strong.Perfect for everyday use and for any other use should you need its higher functions.I also find it very easy to use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like an old buddy...
I have been using my TI-83 for over 6 years. It is the most reliable item I have ever purchased in my entire life. It construction is of very high quality: encased in durable, thick plastic with a highly readable screen and equally-sturdy plastic buttons, it does so many things, and does them well: graphing functions, programming support(similar to Assembly--fun!), probability and statistics options, an tons more that I haven't even explored. The instruction book is several hundred pages long and explains in excruciating detail what this baby does. The TI-83 is perfect, and just plain "feels right". This great indoorsman gives it a "must-buy" rating.

I'm in College Alegbra this semester and only starting to learn all the wonderful things that the TI-83 can do for you. With the TI-83 I feel so much more confident and it really shows in that my grades do improve.(It helps when you know the equations to do the problems with. ;-))I would definitely recommend this graphing calculator to anyone who needs it in college or in high school. It's invaluable.
It's also good for those days when you simply can't study and need something to occupy your time with.Hint:Use the Program feature. In the past, I used it to go on trips with.Talk about a dual-purpose gameboy!

    Editorial Review

The BA-35 from Texas Instruments is an entry-level financial calculator with features that small-business users will likely find useful, but it may not have the power students need to easily solve complex classroom problems. The calculator is powered by a solar cell--there is no battery backup--and comes with a hard plastic cover that can fit on the back of the calculator when it is being used.

The BA-35 is extremely thin, and although the button layout looks cluttered at first glance we rarely mis-keyed entries. The buttons are also sensitive enough that little force is required to get them to register input, yet not so mushy that simply brushing them causes mistakes. Unlike many of the calculators in this price range we've tested, the BA-35 actually comes with some useful documentation. A quick reference card with examples of important calculations like converting annual percentage rates to annual effective rates and entering statistical values is placed inside the calculator cover so you can always keep it handy. A small but surprisingly thorough pamphlet lays out the rest of the calculator's features, covering topics like compound interest and annuity calculations, and providing many illustrated examples for common procedures like computing mortgage payments or determining loan eligibility.

It is possible to enable the calculator to display any number of fixed decimal places, and a percentage key can be used to easily add tax, subtract a discount, or determine a percentage ratio. There's also a Percentage Change key to easily find the percentage difference between two values, and Dedicated Cost, Selling Price, and Markup keys for quickly calculating profit margins. The BA-35 may not have the advanced statistical modes and other complicated features of a more expensive financial calculator, but its combination of portability, price, and practical functionality should appeal to small business users who don't need all the nice extras they used to solve hypothetical problems in business school. --T. Byrl BakerPros:

    • Good documentation with several helpful examples
    • Relatively small and inexpensive

    Cons:

    • Entry-level, so it doesn't have the extra muscle professionals likely need

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for money, great longevity
I bought this calculator for my first finance class 12 years ago. While it does have some limitations such as not being able to work with uneven cash flows, it is still the finance calculator I grab when I want to figure something out in a hurry (I also own an HP 19BII and TI BAII Plus). The BAII Plus does do much more for only a few more dollars, but it is not as quick for simple finance calculations.Further, the BA 35 is still in perfect shape after much use, while the BAII Plus' display has begun malfunctioning and some of the digits do not show up at all now.The BA 35 is a great calculator, but ultimately, I would suggest the HP 17BII (which I have also used extensively, but do not own) if money is not a consideration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Underrated but Outdated
The Texas Instraments BA-35 is a calculator who's time has passed. It does allow the practiced user to ammoritize loans or value annuities with amazing speed, but today there are better options out there.

Deficiencies: 1. Lack of algebraic logic, it just does the calculations in the order you enter them. 2. inconvenient memory- it takes several keystrokes to store or retreive from the memory (but you can use the 5 financial registers as memories). 3. wears out too easily- I have had the displays on 3-4 of these calculators go whacky on me. This is not a problem I have had with other TI models.

There are lots of cool tricks you can do with this calculator, but even the Society of Actuaries has moved on to allow more capable models.

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtually everyone should own a business calculator.
Everyone who borrows money to finance a car or a house should own a business calculator. It can quickly compute in advance how much your monthly payments will be once you insert the amount borrowed, the yearly interest rate, and the number of payments. Or,if you prefer, you can insert the amount of the monthly payment you can afford and calculate the amount you can afford to borrow or the number of payments over which you will need to spread out the loan. You will also be able to protect yourself against accidental or deliberate errors made by the lender. For the purposes outlined above, the Texas Instruments BA35 is a very good buy at a bargain price. If you need a more sophisticated business calculator I recommend the Texas Instruments BA II Plus. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars In search of a better guide
This book was too basic, and it hopped around too much.I am still looking for a good "how to" book on using these calculators.I guess I would have preferred a workbook of problems.Perhaps a workbook would help me harness the full power of a financial calculator.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tries to cover too many bases.
Every book is worth something, this one included. However, you need to get specific in a book as to the calculating device covered. In this book the author seems to be trying to expand her market by covering way too many devices, devices that are in conflict with each other as to keystrokes and the like. And, we dont need anyone to tell us how to make "Effective Use of a Financial Calculator": nobody has "the" answers on this point.
If you have the HP-12C--a very competent device--, consider Mr. Tirone's "Professional Real Estate Problem Solving Using the HP-12C" as well as Mr. Coffin's "Easy Course" on the HP-12C. If you use the HP-17BII (I have this calculator and love it) and if you work in real estate or just want to strut some things on the device, consider Mr. Tirone's "Professional Real Estate... HP-17BII" along with Mr. Coffin's "Easy Course" on the HP-17BII.
As far as trying to master or even learn one of the TI financial calculators, "get real": save your $$ and your time: get the HP-12C or the HP-17BII or possibly the HP-19BII. You will never go wrong with any of these devices.

2-0 out of 5 stars Word of Warning
I purchased this book with the intention of enhancing, believe it or not, my efficiency on a financial calculator.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU HAVE A HP 10B, HP 17BII OR A TI BAII PLUS.

I didn't so it was fairly ineffective, you can pick up little tips here and there but you are better of having a good read of the calculators owners manual. ... Read more
