    PalmOne Vx Handheld
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $199.99

    Editorial Review

At only 4.7 by 3.2 inches square and 0.4 inches thick, the Palm Vxhandheld is truly pocket sized; however, this model sports a hefty 8 MB of RAM.The Palm Vx handheld also sports a sleek exterior that looks supercool--anintangible value to be sure, but one that's hard to argue with.

The Palm Vx handheld offers the same improvements to its screen that were madeto the Palm IIIx. These updates since the Palm III handheld include a farsharper screen and contrast-variable backlighting, which makes the Palm Vxhandheld much easier to use in low-light conditions. Rechargeable lithium-ionbatteries, which charge while the unit sits in its HotSync cradle, make batterylife a nonissue.

You can synchronize Palm handhelds with your computer so that you can carry allyour appointments, notes, contacts, and e-mail with you. The simple one-touchinterface makes sense to new and seasoned computer users alike. For owners thatprefer Microsoft Outlook to keep tabs on folks for business and pleasure, resteasy. With the simple installation procedure, and Outlook support out of thebox, you can transfer the data you have in Outlook, or start fresh with the PalmDesktop software. In addition, there are thousands of applications for the Palmoperating system available on the Internet that make your Palm handheld work aseverything from a universal remote to a digital book and restaurant guide.

We had no trouble setting up the device, synching with our PC-based Netscape e-mail,using the Graffiti character-recognition software, or working with theaddress book, date book, memo writer, to-do list, and all the other applicationsthat put the Palm OS on the map. All in all, this is a great upgrade to analready strong product. If this is your first Palm, it's a great way to start.

    Pros:

    • Palm OS interface is simple to use
    • Easy to install and set up
    • Uses rechargeable batteries
    • Sleek, solid design can take some punishment
    Cons:
    • Not expandable (has a closed case)
    • Case cover opens too easily

2-0 out of 5 stars Crashed three times
I don't see why this item is getting good reviews. It's crashed three times, losing everything. Now the battery won't completely charge.I never could get it connected to the computer.Makes me wonder about Palm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still worth it
In 2005, there are a lot of PDA called Pocket PC, but when you look at palm Vx, you will love it. You are able to put it in your suit or handbag and its glass screen provides you a crystal clear writing. I only need a PDA that take care my telephone list, my personal finance and bible reading. I don't need to listen MP3 or watching DVD on the road, and this palm just meet my need. You will love to carry it with you everywhere you go.

I agree that if you have a portable keyboard, you can even type your homework or paper in the library or anywhere in your home.

Personally, I like Palm OS rather than Pocket PC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great unit
I upgraded from a Palm Pilot Pro about 5 years back to a Palm Vx and then again this year to a Tungsten C. The Vx was a very reliable and robust unit (I got the hard case for it which makes it fairly indestructible) and did everything I needed for a long time. The reasons I upgraded were:
    - colour screen so I could carry pictures and movies of my family with me, and watch DVD and MPEG movies (Tungsten C quality is fantastic for these). The colour also enhances all the applications, especially DateBk5
    - WiFi just in case I needed to get email whilst away - though so far I've not been anywhere without an internet cafe in range !
    - expansion slots so I could store and listen to audio MP3s and which alows me to make a complete compressed backup onto the expansion card (so I don't need a laptop with me nowadays as well)
    - enogh memory to store DocsToGo, Ultralingua (French dictionary), Handbase and a few other apps which I use heavily

Unless you need/want any of this, the Vx will do the basics very well indeed. However, the Tc is pretty good too so far (and I can sync via WiFi anywhere in my house so the cradle I only need for recharging now) and you will certainly find useful things to do with the extra features and memory. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly as advertised
These fit my Palm V well but they are not the same model as the stylus that came with the Palm. They're made of plastic instead of metal and they don't have the built-in reset pin. I guess this is all we can get as a simple replacement though. If you know where find a metal one with the reset pin, I'm all ears.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works, but not as advertised.
The styli are of sufficient quality for me to be satisfied with them (= they work), but I have two complaints about this product :

    - The product is said to be "same as stylus provided with product" and a "genuine Palm quality product". It is neither. These styli do not fit the silo perfectly and the screws at the top and bottom are badly made, in contrast to the perfect screws and silo fitting of those that were provided with the product.

    - The price is excessive. Why should a simple piece of mass produced plastic cost over three U.S.$s, especially considering the mediocre quality of the product ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
High-quality stylus, 3 of them even! They even seem better than the one that was actually included with my Palm Pilot. A stylus is an easy thing to misplace, lose, just like a pen, so its great to have a few in your briefcase or purse! ... Read more

PalmOne Portable Keyboard for Palm V Series Handhelds
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $99.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Tired of using the stylus for tedious "typing" and handwriting on your Palm V organizer? The Palm portable keyboard not only gives you a full-size QWERTY keyboard for touch-typing on your Palm organizer, but also folds up for portable convenience.

The keyboard folds into a 3.5-by-5-inch case that is only slightly larger than the Palm organizer itself. At 0.875 inches thick, the portable keyboard is a little too large to fit into most shirt pockets, but it will fit into a jacket pocket and takes up very little room in a briefcase or purse.

To set up the keyboard driver, we did not need to consult the instruction manual. We inserted the accompanying software disk into our PC and double-clicked the PRC icon on our desktop. We inserted the Palm organizer into its HotSync cradle and pressed the HotSync button. To open the portable keyboard, we slid its side-mounted thumb-switch down, unfolded its panels, and slid the left and right sides of the keyboard together until they locked into place. With only a little experimentation, we found a sliding support behind the portable keyboard's dock connector, into which we slid our Palm organizer. Then, we started the Memo application on the Palm and began typing. In fact, we wrote a portion of this review using the Memo application while typing on the portable keyboard.

Typing on the portable keyboard is much like typing on a notebook PC. The response of the keys is quite comfortable, and the tactile feedback is satisfying. The keys are also positioned well for fast touch-typing. Note that you can only use the portable keyboard on a firm flat surface; you cannot use it on your lap because the keyboard's center hinge does not lock. We also advise that you handle the portable keyboard gently, as it is made from thin and lightweight materials.

For people who need to use their Palm for memos, e-mail, writing reports, or any activity that requires entering more than just a few words, the Palm portable keyboard offers a tremendous convenience, especially given its small size and portability.

    Pros:

    • True touch-typing for your Palm organizer
    • Ultracompact, folding design for portability
    • Doesn't require batteries or an external power source
    • Attractive styling matches the Palm V

    Cons:

    • Cannot rest keyboard on your lap
    • Lightweight construction

5-0 out of 5 stars Palm Key board
I never really used my palm until I bought this key board. It is great I use it all the time now.The keyboard was like new and works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!
I really like this item.I like it for school a lot. When I do my reports it is a very cool tool to have. The shortcuts are cool too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this!
I have had my Palm for about 2 years and bought a keyboard when it was only a couple of months old. I took that one back because it was sold without software. I decided not to buy another one because I didn't want to have to run up to the computer store again.

I'm a journalist, so I'm using my Palm daily now and am always having to pull up the keyboard on the screen. This get's a be a pain when I'm writing a list of interview questions or writing down who I talked to or emailed in a contact log.

The keyboard took less than 5 minutes to install, pop in the CD and add the keyboard will be installed next time you sync your Palm with the PC.I was shocked that it really was that simple.

When I finally have to replace my Palm, I'm definitely going to get another keyboard. This one saves me so much time. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Protect your valuable Palm V or Palm Vx handhelds investment from life's hard knocks. This case is made of tough aluminum to guard against damage. The Palm V handheld slips inside, using the case's center rail. A spring-loaded mechanism keeps the case securely closed while you're walking or biking. When you open the case, its two-stop hinge opening holds both the case and your Palm V handheld in place for convenient viewing without using your hands. With its brushed aluminum and black accents, this sporty case adds another touch of style to the Palm V handheld. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Had my PalmVx for five years...
...but rarely took it out of the house because I didn't have a protective case for it (I had the leather folding screen cover). So my beloved buys me one for Christmas, and I am overjoyed! Finally I can take it out!

It was a happy two weeks. Note the date I write this review, for yesterday I removed my "hard case" from my jacket pocket to jot a note and opened it to discover my Palm Vx screen was cracked. My Palm Vx now forever dwells in an eternal purgatory of digitizer targeting, asking me over and over to please confim where the X is on the screen.

Now, if you're like my parents your first question will be "How did you break it?". I did nothing except put it in a "hard" case and take it outside (in my inner coat pocket) in a Minnesota winter. I did not leave it out in subzero weather. I am not a fighter pilot, or a demo car driver, or a cage match fighter. I did not roll my car while I was driving. I am a nondescript little office drone who took my Palm Vx out to go furniture shopping.

I do not recommend this product. It's a cheap little slippery flimsy clamshell that offers no protection whatever and if you trust your Palm to it, both your Palm and your heart will wind up broken.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This case is no good.Won't stay closed.Beware of the cheap price, you get what you pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made my Palm truly accesible.
This hard case really enhanced the use of my Palm by allowing me to carry it everywhere in my back pocket. By having it accesible all the time my Palm has become a great enhancement to orginizing my appointments and address book. I love this. If I ever upgrade my Palm to a new model I will be sure to get the hardcase for that model as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did its job
I've seen friends carry around their palms, and I've considered obtaining one of these toys along with the battery charger. It seems more cost efficient to simply order one of these in preference to buying an endless supply of batteries.

    1-0 out of 5 stars ...
I was excited about this product when i first saw it because i needed another cradle and i wanted to take my palm on the road. I though the idea of using batteries to power the Palm Vx was great. I got the BattPac and started using it. At first it worked great. After two sets of batteries the batteries started falling out becuase the clips holding them in are made of very thin metal that bends beneath the weight of the battery. Then the clip on the battery cover cracked off. ...

I would hope that... the product would be of much higher quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic accessory!
This is going to make my life so much easier.I had been taking my recharger/cradle to and from the office every day to synch/charge at home, and this nifty accessory now solves that problem.

Furthermore, I do a lot of international travel and was worried about recharging/synching my Palm while on the road and also avoiding dangerous fluctuations in voltage that could fry the unit.Requiring only 2 AA batteries (available everywhere), I now never have to worry about running out of juice.

For those who travel, this is a must! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the cost
Although the visibility is hurt a little bit by the sheets the protection is well worth the minor loss in image.I really like the feel that the sheets add.I find myself looking down less when I am taking quick notes because of the better texture.I would like to see the price go down a bit but...[it's] a lot better than replacing a screen

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Tap Screen Users Like Me
As a heavy note taking and word processing user of my Palm (writing into both Palm's memo program and Data Viz's Documents To Go), I was starting to notice scratches appearing on my screen, particularly over the most used letters of the tap screen keyboard.(Since I don't use Graffiti, these scratches were beginning to obscure the live viewing area of the display when the keyboard was not in use.)

I immediately purchased a package of Fellowes WriteRight based upon a friend's recommendation.

The WriteRight plastic overlays immediately covered up the scratches on my screen (making it look new again) while providing me with the protection that I was seeking.

With the WriteRight sheets, the clarity and contrast of my screen are reduced somewhat, and glare reduction (as touted on the package) is negligible at best.My Palm screen, however, is still usable in either reflected light or when using the Palm V's backlight (the latter being very important to me since I work on my Palm at night either on a plane or at my kids' sports practice).

The life of each overlay sheet easily exceeds the one month suggested manufacturer's recommendation. And, when removed (which is easy to do), it leaves no adhesive residue.

The enclosed "squeegee" (a credit card-size piece of plastic) made application and air bubble evacuation more certain. And the non-glare finish of the sheets does prevent fingerprints from being seen as claimed.

Fellowes WriteRight is overall a very good product.Be sure to buy some either before or after you scratch your display.Either way, the WriteRight sheets, even though they may seem a bit pricey, are certainly a good value and much less expensive when compared to the alternative -- paying to have the screen replaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Protection for the Palm Vx
I noticed that the screen of my Palm Vx showed fingerprints and dirt very easily, and I was looking for something that would go on and come off very easily, without leaving any sort of residue or tack on the screen. This product is just that, it has a light texture that allows easier pickup from the stylus, which is an excellent feature. The textured surface also acts as a filter for the screen, it is hard to view it at longer distances, which could be a great feature for privacy reasons, but I found that using it as close as I have before, I have no problem reading the screen, if not easier on the eyes. Personally, I thought the product was a bit pricey at first, but it contains enough protectors for an entire year! Its well worth the cost to protect a valued investment. If you have purchased a Palm V(x) or you are purchasing one, be sure to pick up this product. ... Read more
