5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Seattle Area Mt Biking.
Good driving directions, good riding directions, good guide to what is actually at the trail. All around a great addition for anyone just getting going in Mt. Biking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even in the dark, this book got me out of the woods!
As a visitor to Seattle, I used this book to find some good local mtn.bike trails. The author of the book has detailed every aspect of thesetrails to the mile.If you use the information and follow your bikecomputer, you will find your way around some awesome trails.I wouldsuggest photocopying the pages and carrying them with you as the book istoo bulky unless you have a big backpack.Luckily, when we rode theMiddlefork trail at Snoqualmie we were smart enough to tear the pages outof the book.We misjudged our timing especially due to some of theobstacles we faced on the trail i.e. water crossings, fallen trees, etc. With one light (one burned out in 2 hours) and three people, we followedthe book to the "t" and hiked approx. 6 miles of this trail inthe dark.Without those torn out pages, we'd have spent the night inSnoqualmie!Great book.Buy it if you want to ride the trails in Seattle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Seattle Area Mountain Bike Trail Resource
If you're new to mountain biking or new to the area this book is a "must have."The book is filled with rides within 90 minutes drive of Seattle.Directions to trailheads are excellent, routes provide agood overview of each area, and route maps provide adequate diection.Thisis THE guide for Seattle-area mountain biking. ... Leatherman 68010103H Crunch with Leather Sheath

Editorial Review

When Leatherman says "crunch" they really, really mean it. We could not believe the grip on these locking pliers, especially when you consider what the small package in which they come. As with all Leatherman goodies, the tool is easy to open, maneuver, and close and comes with an array of screwdrivers built in, along with a bottle opener, wire strippers, file, knife and, next to the locking pliers, our second-favorite feature: a hex bit driver. If you know Leatherman, you know we're talking quality and convenience. But this new twist with the locking pliers puts Crunch at the top of the Leatherman list for us. We can hardly think of anyone who couldn't use one of these.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice tool--clever design but somewhat limited
I have a Leatherman Wave, a PST and an assortment of Micras (they tend to get lost). This company makes good stuff. The Crunch has a clever design. Who knew you could fit fully functional vise grips in a small belt pouch? The only downside is that the mechanics required to pull off this feat limit the space available for other tools. This tool will get lots of use, but the lack of a plain blade and scissors dimishes its jack-of-all-trades function a bit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool! Junky sheath!
This is the best multi-tool I've seen, but the sheath is a piece of junk which is a shame since the tool is too large and bulky to carry in your pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion
When I bought my Crunch, I already owned a Leatherman SuperTool and Wave, so I was already familiar with Leatherman quality and versatility. My intention when I purchased the Crunch was to have a great companion tool for my others, and I haven't been dissappointed.Whenever I need an extra hand to hold down what I'm working on, or two screwdrivers, or a wriench and screwdriver at the same time, the Crunch comes through.9 times out of 10, it's the vise-grip that I'm using, so this is the most important thing to me.Being in the Army, it's important that the equipment I work with works, because the alternative is unacceptable.Whether it's here in the states, or walking the streets of Baghdad, the Crunch works for me every time and I keep it with me everywhere I go. ... Mountain Bike! Northwest Washington: A Guide to Trails & Adventure
by John Zilly

Paperback (01 May, 1998)

Editorial Review

For an exceptional fat-tire roundup of the Evergreen State, follow the highly informative tread of John Zilly. The author of Kissing the Trail: Greater Seattle Mountain Bike Adventures widens his scope with two volumes detailing some of the best trails in Western Washington. Mountain Bike! Northwest Washington, and its companion, Mountain Bike! Southwest Washington are the definitions of good guidebooks: they boast serious research, sensible organization, and a battery of useful trail maps and directions. What's more, Zilly possesses a flair for the written word not often found in such practical guides; he steers the hungry cyclist through a variety of trail conditions and skill levels in style, highlighting particularly gnarly terrain and displaying an infectious enthusiasm for the thrill of a widowmaker descent. Serious knobby-heads will also thank the author (and, later on the trail, curse him) for the inclusion of 30-mile "epics," all-day single-track journeys that combine awesome views, technical riding, and all-out endurance tests. Every mountain-biking hotspot should be so lucky to have a Zilly as tour guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great NW Washington State Guide Book
I wish all guide books were as well researched as this one. Each hand drawn map has GPS waypoints on it plus all the major features and a reference to the USGS/Green Trails Map. Locations of nearby campgrounds and supplies. Plus a very nice rating system so you don't get in over your head. There are 2 maybe 3 overlapping trails with the "Kissing the Trail" book but that's ok. Wish I had thought of having a career of riding my bike and writing a book about it. Way to go John.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
These two books are the bomb(S).The directions and the descriptions of the rides are spot on and most importantly the selection of the rides (if you like truly remote, tough, and stunningly beautiful adventures)is tremendous. My copies of these books are dog eared with love and mud.Trust me you cannot go wrong with these books - and I've biked all over the country - or biking in the Pacific Northwest July - Sept - Amazing! Too good!Be prepared for some long drives from Seattle (2hrs each way) but the memories will last much longer. Enjoy! I hope Zilly goes on to write books for the rest of the country... ... Read more

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Micra's ultracompact design harbors 10 tools and weighs only 1-3/4 ounces, so it really is small and light enough to be carried comfortably in a pocket or on a key chain. The scissors on the Micra are extremely effective, and the tweezers don't detach (and get lost), as do those on traditional pocketknives. The Micra features stainless-steel components, including the scissors, a clip-point knife, tweezers, a nail file/cleaner, screwdrivers, a bottle opener, a ruler, and a lanyard attachment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Compact and very cool
The Leatherman Micra is a very nice little tool. It has an ingenious compact design that holds a lot of tools inside. The main tool you see after opening it up is the scissors, which are very strong. You can cut staples and cardboard with these scissors, along with the other stuff you cut with scissors (papers, string, etc.). There are 3 types of screw drivers which you can use for a variety of screws, ranging from small to regular sized. There's the tweezers, which are better than the ones in the Swiss Army Knives and are attached to the tool so you can't lose them. There is a knife which is pretty sharp. There's a can opener, which you might not use much here but when you go to various countries outside the U.S. they have more bottled soft drinks so you can try them out. There's also a nail file (comes with a cleaner) and a ruler.

The whole knife closes nicely, and it's all stainless steel. Overall, this knife would make a great addition to your keychain so that you can have it with you at all times, and you'll be happy you brought it when it comes in handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I was given this product used as a gift by a customer at a store. My initial response was that it would be useless, but I now carry it in my pocket quite frequently.A scissors is one of the most useful portable tools to have.Unlike other pocket knifes (e.g. swiss), the scissors on the Leatherman Micra is useable, even for cutting annoying plastic packaging on electronics.I will note that the tweezer side sometimes allows pocket lint onto some of the tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice!
Very useful and well made tool. It's not industrial strength but it's small enough to carry easily in a front pants pocket. ... Read more

Editorial Review

What do you do if you're 25 miles into the backcountry and a member of your hiking party develops appendicitis? Or if you're nearing the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and your climbing partner suffers a ruptured cornea from the altitude? If you thought ahead, you'd pull out your copy of Medicine for Mountaineering. This is probably the top book to carry for serious backcountry injuries. There are other titles that cover basic first aid, but not with this book's depth and specificity.

Ten M.D.s with a fondness for wilderness outings contributed to the chapters, and it shows: medical jargon abounds. But don't be intimidated by words like thrombophlebitis or pneumothorax--you might need to know how to treat blood clots in the legs or a ruptured lung. Most of the injuries covered have their origin in high-altitude mishaps, whether it be kidney infections from dehydration or blunt head trauma from falling rocks. Other ailments like appendicitis and heart disorders are less common, but if they strike in the backcountry, it's vital to know what to do. The range of medical advice stretches all the way to administering intravenous drips and performing tube thoracostomies (inserting a drain valve into a patient's fluid-filled lungs). Though the authors warn that such procedures should be performed by a trained physician, if it's a life-and-death situation miles from any hospital, these instructions could make all the difference. Other topics covered include: soft-tissue injuries, fractures, burns, gastrointestinal disorders, neural disorders, infections, allergies, heat and solar injuries, animal bites and stings, and cold injuries. A list of useful prescription drugs for mountaineering is also valuable.

Who could benefit from this book? Anyone venturing into the outdoors, but particularly those bound for remote locations who've already mastered basic first aid. Emergency medical technicians will find some of the topics familiar, but even they won't be expert in all the injuries outlined here.At 20 ounces, Medicine for Mountaineering is worth the extra weight in your pack. --Demian McLean ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine for Mountaineering
Excellent source of information for those having to deal with injuries in the wilderness. As a survival instructor I recommend it to all my classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is mine!
Here I am, ordering a replacement. Of all the books on health and first aid, this is the one I look to the most often. I live on a remote island and have used this book to judge the severity of injuries and the need for evacuation, or just the need for time. I am not a mountaineer, but my family does manage to get into scrapes....concussions, chainsaw injuries, broken glass and a recent allergic reaction. This last incident is what made me realize that my ancient copy was gone. This book has been better than any otherbook as far a raising my kids in a proactive way, especially when it comes to emergency room conversations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - Very Comprensive!
To quote part of the book, this book is not of the attitude "don't do any harm until the docter comes, because in many wilderness setting the docter is not comming."This is not the book for general first aidand first time learners, rather the more advanced outdoor person who wouldbe in situations where medical help is more than a day away. It explanismore advanced treatments, the backgroud anatomy, and how to address theentire patient not just cookbook first aid. ... Read more

Garmin eTrex Vista 24 MB GPS with Compass, Altimeter, and PC Cable
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $319.99 -- our price: Too Low To Display
(price subject to change: see help)

Editorial Review

Garmin's eTrex Vista GPS receiver is smaller than its popular eMaps, but far more powerful. The Vista offers more memory, more features, and more convenience than any other GPS hardware in this price range.

Don't be fooled by the product's small screen. Although smaller than the display used in products like the eMap, it has a higher resolution, letting it show more information more crisply. Small text can be difficult to read from a distance, but there are "big number" options available to make important data like your speed easy to read.

It's this configurability that makes the eTrex Vista so special.

Map page (shown with optional MapSource topo detail).
You can easily set it up to suit your needs, regardless of the situation. Menu choices are highlighted and confirmed with a small joystick near the top of the unit, providing an elegant interface for navigating a formidable amount of options. Our only complaint is that the joystick used to access all the product's features is offset to the left, making it nearly impossible to control using only your right hand. When the joystick is held in your left hand, however, every control is within easy reach of your left thumb, freeing your right hand to hold a flashlight, walking stick, lantern, or anything else.

This GPS unit's diminutive size and weight, not to mention its rugged design, make it an ideal hiking companion. It's waterproof in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes and is generously coated with shock-absorbing rubber. The barometric altimeter keeps a historical record of your ascents and descents, graphing elevation changes so you can easily track your progress.

Elevation page
The ability to store waypoints, points of interest, routes, and other information means you can blaze your own trail and always find your way back to camp.

Best of all, 24 MB of internal memory makes it possible to store an enormous amount of data from Garmin's optional MapSource CDs, turning the eTrex Vista into an interactive road atlas. The memory isn't expandable, but 24 MB is enough to store street-level data for entire states in some cases.

A serial cable is included for transferring the maps from your PC to the GPS unit, but it's terribly slow. A USB connector, sold separately, transfers data in a fraction of the time.

The eTrex Vista was very accurate in testing, especially in a car on the open road. Accuracy diminished somewhat when the device was used in heavy tree cover or a dense urban area, but not enough that you're ever going to get lost or miss an exit. Used side-by-side with an eMap, the eTrex Vista kept up in update speed while displaying even more information on the moving map than the eMap did, cementing its position as perhaps the best all-around handheld GPS unit money can buy. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Small and light without sacrificing features
  • 24 MB of integrated memory stores reams of detailed maps
  • High-resolution screen displays sharp text legible even at extremely small sizes

Cons:

  • Can't be used one-handed when held in the right hand
  • Smaller display is hard to read from a distance, as when the device is placed on a dashboard

1-0 out of 5 stars Reception
I am in the mlitary and the use of this GPS was solely in a field environment.I orginally purchased this product when I went to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, CA.As a tank commander, I used it only when I was dismounted. There is no external antenna attachment so it was obviously useless inside the tank, even with the hatch open.A buddy of mine had a magellan in a Bradley and his worked and my Garmin did not.The next test was in Iraq.I deployed with 2/2 ACR out of Fort Polk, LA.All we had was HMMWVs so I thought the Garmin would work great. To much disappointment, the etrex would not get a signal in the HMMWV unless I had it propped up in the window.Fortunately, I had a plugger and FBCB2 so it really wasn't that big of a deal. The most usefulness was for marking UXO cluster bombs that had not exploded in civilian areas.I would mark the spot with a 10 digit coordinate and pass it on to the engineers. After about 6 months in the Iraq heat and extreme weather conditions, my screen started messing up.It had all these lines and I had to squeeze the sides so the screen would come into viewagain. It was very frustrating.I would not recommend this version for military personnel traveling in vehicles or needing something that is rugged.

3-0 out of 5 stars Everything is good except the compass
I have used my eTrex Vista for over 200 miles of geocaching now.I really like everything about this product except the compass. In order for the compass and direction finder to be accurate, you must hold the eTrex perfectly level. This can be very annoying, especially when walking or on a slope. And folks, the direction finder is a very important feature of any GPSr--you might say it is the reason you get a GPSr.If I get another GPS unit, it will be a Magellan brand with a 3-axis compass. You can hold those at an angle and the compass is still accurate. If you bike a lot, get the Garmin handlebar adapter--turns your eTrex into the world's greatest bike computer!

5-0 out of 5 stars GARMIN HAS GOOD RECEPTION
I own 3 GPS receivers and I will say Garmin did an excellent job. The receiver is much more sensitive to satellite signals than my other GPSs. Just don't expect too much from this small unit with tiny screen and very slow CPU for screen refresh. It will drive you nuts to use it for street navigation. It is suitable for back trailing in the mountains. For street navigate, I strongly suggest that you hook this unit up with a laptop but make sure that GPS is set to NMEA and the software GPS setting is also correct. Conclusion, don't street navigate with this unit alone and don't buy a no brand GPS under $90 because you will not be happy with the reception.

I don't work for the company (although I think I'd make a good sales rep, considering how I give these away as gifts / stocking stuffers). This is simply the best pair of sunglasses I've ever bought. I wear them everyday, not just for working outside.

They're totally adjustable, which includes the angle they rest on your nose as well as the length of the sides.I've actually talked to the manufacturer to tell them what a great job they do, and why in blazes they're not in all Home Depot stores, just one, so far, in Tucson.

They do just as well as those $100 glasses you see, AND they protect your eyes against physical impact.I won't leave home without them.Oh yeah, their ear plugs are fantastic, too. Yes, I know, how can someone get excited over sunglasses and earplugs, but if you're interested in protecting your eyes and ears, they're simply the best products around. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shine on!
Sunday is "Fort Building Day" in my home.My son and I remove all of the cushions and pillows from our chairs and couches, and build the most incredible forts you've ever seen.We even draw diagrams and take photos of each fort, in case we want to go back and revisit some of the "classic forts" one day.

Since most of our forts are built in my basement, it gets dark in those forts.Really dark.Panic has set in more than a few times when my son has gone missing for a day or longer. But thanks to the focusable flood/spot beam on Petzl Duo LED Headlamp, I am able to navigate my way through the constructed maze of twists and turns, and find my son, safe and sound.

With the ability to choose one of three low-beam LED lights, or a high-beam halogen light, the Petzl Duo LED Headlamp is sure to exceed your lighting needs.

I'v been on 2 marathons so far since buying this headlamp, and it is the first to, not only stand up to, but excell at the harsh conditions anything that goes along on one of my night time uphill endurance WC marathons has to. Just that would make it worth it.But it also has an on/off switch lock for not accidentally switching on in your pack and draining your batterys. I'v tried countless headlamps and this is by far the undisputed best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never left me in a dark cave!
I just LOVE this lamp!

It is powerful, very bright, can be used as a flood or spot light and takes the harsh conditions of being clunked, bumped, rattled and jarred in a cave. Most I have used seem a little tempermental when injured.

I hit it pretty good one time when I stood up about an inch to soon and smacked the helmet on the roof of the cave, me so bad!!My cohort that day looked at the light, it got scratched too when it was also whacked on the roof, since it is attached to my helmet. The lense and case each had pretty decent war wounds, but this baby is like a Timex, it kept on ticking.

It is also waterproof, unlike the other 2 I had prior to this one.Washed it off in the creek, and it stayed lit!It was with me when I was walking through a little waterfall one time and this lamp was unfazed.

After wearing it one time, I removed it so I could clean the lense well.I put it in a duffle bag, that since has disappeared, I guess it got mistaken for someone elses stuff.Had my best lights and caving gear in that bag. ;(

I need to purchase another, though this one is pricey, it is worth the investment. It never left me in the dark. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great little wrench
Compared to other adjustable wrenches near this price. This is one is hard to beat. The handle is a major point it's round and fits in the hand without the feel of the standard flat wrench, plus the rubber grip helps really apply torque. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nobody's Bike Book
This book is not so hot. The cartoonish illustrations do not help one bit. If you really want to fix your bike get How To Rock And Roll by Sam Tracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Tom!
This book helped a kid for whom things mechanical were mysterious and a bit scary. That kid took a department store bike that always rode "kind of funny" and made it a faithful steed.27 years and many thousands of cycling miles later I just want to say THANKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Bike Book!
I bought my first copy of this book back in 1974 at the age of 14, and proceeded to tear every part of my bike apart, and more importantly, successfully put it back together! I recently began riding again, and the first thing I did was to buy the newest edition, and proceeded to tear apart my bike again! This book makes it fun to work on bikes! In fact, once I had finished completely overhauling it, I was a little bummed because all that is left to do now is to ride it...

The bood is well written, funny, informative, and covers almost everything. I highly recommend it to anyone who owns a bike and is interested in learning to maintain it! ... Read more
