4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad...
Bought this as a christmas gift for my wife.I got to try it out a few times and was never disappointed with the results.Wish I read up on the reviews before I got it, might have got something else instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving on, but this was a great camera
Regardless of the negative reviews, the C5060 is one great advanced digital camera. Keep in mind that this is a point and shoot or creative shooting camera, but with little flexibility in lense add ons. The wide angle and macro capabilities are superb. The low light performance so commonly complained about can easily be overcome when neeeded by increasing the exposure by a third of a stop or two. I've taken over 8000 photos withthis camera in 16 months and never had one problem with it. Be careful where you buy yours. There are refurbs and non-US versions out there now.
I've moved on to a digital LR but the C5060 was a great camera for me and expect it to remain so for it's new owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera
I have had the c-5060 for almost a year and am very happy with the camera. The wide-angle lens is great for landscape photos. I find that the amount of post-processing I need to do with photos from this camera is minimal. Sharpness is always good right off the camera. It also handles contrasty scenes very well and doesn't overexpose as much as other cameras I have owned. ... Read more

Olympus Camedia C-5050 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
by Olympus
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics (18 November, 2002)
list price: $759.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Olympus Camedia C-5050 is a monster in terms of performance, compatibility, and unfortunately, price. This 5.0 megapixel camera captures images at some of the highest detail possible in a digital device. It also supports a variety of storage media including CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Microdrive, and XD (it ships with a 32 MB XD card).

The 3x optical zoom lens slides into the black body of the camera when it's turned off. Although this doesn't cut down much on the heft of the 13-ounce Magnesium device, its design still allows it to be easily held in one hand while shooting. Since its powered by four AA batteries, you'll want to pick up some rechargeable ones to save on battery swapping.

Its bright, large 1.8-inch LCD can be viewed easily even in high light environments. It also conveniently detaches from the camera body and swivels out into multiple positions to aid in atypically angled shots (although not through as wide a range as other cameras offering this feature).

All of the controls within this camera are adjustable, including aperture and shutter priority, Panorama, special effects, etc., as well as programmable into a My Mode, letting you customize your most oft-used settings. Captured images were incredibly detailed at the highest resolution of 2560 by 1960 (large enough for printing out at 13 by 17 inches). You can also capture video clips complete with sound with lengths limited only by your storage capacity.

The myriad buttons and dials on the top and back of the camera might prove a bit daunting to the novice digital photographer, although the power and price of this camera will most likely be attracting intermediate or advanced users.

This isn't a camera to get for your kid's sweet sixteen present, but if you're looking for a digital cam with the performance and range of features to compete with a high-end film camera, the C-5050 holds its own. --J. Curtis

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Camera That's Seen Better Times
The C5050 is a remarkable camera in so many ways that only the passage of time can take away from it. Just a year after the 5050 made its debut, the market saw a veritable flood of 6- and 7-megapixal cameras, most considerably smaller with new features and capabilities. For those who have external flash units, this camera offers a flash shoe; however, those who want to travel light, I'd recommend a smaller 6-megapixal with a non-glare LCD and AA batteries. Skip the proprietary batteries. They won't be around in a few years.

The Olympus D-40's a great camera if you can still find one. It's a 4-megapixal, but it's a beauty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sudden unexpected problems
I have been using my Camedia C-5050 for 13 months. I was always VERY pleased with good picture quality. One of the big pluses this camera has is the lens. While on a trip in Brazil I was able to take pictures of wildlife at dawn when a friend of mine with a similar 5MP cmaera of another brand could not get his to focus because of lack of light.

Unfortunatelly, just after 1 year of use I had to send it in for repairs since all the pictures started turning out purple! All resetting and formatting of storage cards was to no avail. Sending a great camera for repairs when you've always treated it with great care, is discouraging, but I guess that can happen with any camera or brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Camera
So as not to be too redundant, read 4 star review by Charles from 12/03, "Sees in the dark like a cat".

Having owned the C-2000, C-3000, & C-4040, obviously I'm a big fan of Olympus. But the C-5050 is more than a simple upgrade, its been significantly re-tooled.Key improvements are:

-Dual media slots: one takes either a SM or xd, and the other a CF.You can toggle between the two of them easily. This is the only Olympus model to offer this feature, and its nice that I don't have to toss my SM cards.

-Pivoting LCD screen (180).If you compose on the LCD screen as I do, this is a great feature for shooting overhead or down low.

-Macro & SuperMacro modes: takes crystal clear photos from 1.2".

-Additional Program Modes: Beyond P Mode, the are presets for Sports, Portrait, Landscape, and Portrait + Landscape (foreground in focus), and Night. But I tend to get less noise in low light photos w/o flash in P mode vs. Night mode

-Separate on/off toggle wheel that also functions as a "quick select" of certain options, including flash type, freeing you from the menus.

-Five "My Mode" settings where you can save your own custom settings

-Option to shoot in 3:2 SHQ mode to enable 4X6 prints w/o cropping.

The P mode is so good, I rarely use the full manual settings.Easy to modify P mode with buttons that can change exposure +/- in 1/3 stops.

I shoot almost exclusively without flash, and it's truly amazing how much brighter the image will appear than actual.Autofocusing can be slow if the subject is not well-defined, but that's to be expected. There's an option to turn on a red autofocus beam.

This is Olympus' only 5+ MP model to have the f1.8 lens, and is worth the trade-off of lower zoom than the C-5060 or C-8080, which have f2.8 lenses.Having traded down once to f2.8 with the C-3000, I think the f1.8 is of more value. At 5MP, its not a problem to severely crop on the PC & still have a top quality image.

Re: the comment about settings not being saved, there is a menu item "All reset".Default is "yes", simply change to "No", and settings will remain intact.

As for weaknesses, the Manual is next to worthless, and the Camedia software could be better, but I have Photoshop 5.5 and MS Image Pro, so not really a drawback for me.Also, when the batteries are changed or die, the date needs to be reset.

Even if you've had an Olympus C-series before, enough has changed that you'll need to sit down and go through all the menus initially. There are alot of good online references (Steve's Digicams is one). The Olympus website also has support and tutorials.

I hightly recommend this camera.I plan to keep this for many years to come, as 5MP is enough for me. ... Read more

Canon PowerShot G5 5MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom
by Canon
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $799.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

With a stunning combination of resolution, speed and control, all housed in a rugged, elegant new black enclosure, the PowerShot G5 takes the lead as Canon's flagship PowerShot. With a host of improvements and professional features, the PowerShot G5 will exceed the expectations of even the most discerning photographer.

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot G5 uses a 5.0 Megapixel CCD sensor, providing a file with 2,592 x 1,944 pixels for stunning clarity and color in even your biggest enlargements of up to 20x30 inches in size. Primary color filters reduce noise while enhancing the natural colors of the scene photographed. At the heart of the PowerShot G5 is Canon's powerful 4x optical, 4x digital zoom lens. With a 35mm equivalent range of 35 – 140mm, a large maximum aperture of f/2.0 – 3.0, and macro focusing down to 2 inches, there's virtually nothing this lens can't do. A 4x digital zoom feature extends the telephoto capabilities even further, effectively making it a 16x zoom.

The PowerShot G5 achieves sharp focus with both single and continuous focusing systems, perfect for any photography from sports to still life. With two types of AF, including FlexiZone, where the user defines the focus point anywhere in the composition, and a unique focus-bracketing feature, the PowerShot G5 can achieve perfect focus anywhere.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash Type I or Type II cards in uncompressed RAW format or one of three compressed JPEG formats. The camera uses a USB 1.1 interface and also outputs NTSC or PAL video with monaural sound. It can connect directly to Canon Card Photo Printer and select BJ Printers.

Movie Mode
It is possible to record video with mono sound in either 320x240 or 160x120 resolution. Total recording time varies depending on the size of the installed storage media, but individual clips may not exceed three minutes in length regardless of the available storage space.

More Features
The G5's DIGIC Imaging Processor revolutionizes how you shoot digital by allowing the camera to process images faster and improving the accuracy of the autofocus. DIGIC also reduces the effects on noise in your images. The camera also incorporates Canon's iSAPS scene-recognition technology. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC Imaging Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Other features include:

  • Intelligent Orientation Sensor can tell whether you shot your photo vertically or horizontally
  • 12 EOS-based Shooting Modes, including two user-defined custom modes
  • The user controls every aspect of the shot, including aperture and shutter speed
  • Compatible with Canon Direct Printing technology
  • 1.8-inch TFT LCD

Power and Size
The G5 uses an included rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that allows for up to 360 minutes of playback time or enough time to take approximately 450 pictures with the LCD turned on. The camera measures 4.76 x 2.91 x 2.75 inches and weighs 14.5 ounces without batteries or storage media installed.

What's in the Box
The camera comes with a lens cap, neck strap, AV cable, remote control, and 32 MB CompactFlash card that can store approximately 32 compressed images. It also includes a BP-511 Li-ion rechargeable battery pack, an AC adapter, a USB interface cable, and two software CD-ROMs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you have active children
This camera does a little of everything, video with sound as well as images. The pictures it takes can be fantastic. Unfortunately the subject has to be pretty still or in very good lighting to get a good shot. I took this camera to a soccer practice of a bunch of 10-year-olds in the daytime with heavy cloud cover and not a single photograph turned out. That included the few I used the built-in flash on (it couldn't focus). I also tried shooting some pictures at an indoor game that were disastrous because of the quick subjects (10-year-olds again) and low lighting.

Even during several outdoor games in bright sunlight it just couldn't hack it. I took several hundred photographs to get 30 or 40 worth keeping. Most of the time I was struggling with the camera trying to get it to focus and snap before the children ran away and out of focus.

I also took this camera to Hawaii for a vacation. It did much better when the subject stood still and smiled, but none of the evening sunset-shots turned out.

The camera also has a flaw in that the lens blocks out part of the viewfinder. This isn't much of an issue once you get used to using the LED to line up your shots.

On the plus side, this camera has a very long battery life and can use the Ultra II compact flash cards. The software was also very easy to use (be sure to read the instructions BEFORE loading it onto your computer, not during).

Overall, my recommendation is to spend a little extra for an SLR camera and leave this one alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Full Feature Camera, Some Issues
I have been really happy with the overall performance of this camera. I love being able to change how many pixels I want for my photos. I frequently will use the 5 pixel function so that I can later crop photos as necessary. Sometimes I wish that the camera were smaller. Also, we had to send the camera back to the manufacturer because the battery closure warped and the camera kept losing power. They fixed it quickly and for free.I was happy with the service.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great camera for daily needs
I bought this camera after reviewing several other camera in the same price range. This is a great camera with most of the features I was looking for including a handy remote to take picture of the whole family. I love it... ... Read more

The stylish Dimage S414 offers a 4-megapixel resolution for prints beyond 11 by 14 inches, a 4x optical zoom, built-in flash, video recording capability, and Compact Flash card compatibility.

Three exposure modes are available: program, aperture priority, and manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Camera..Too Bulky.
I bought this camera just a month ago and I didn't have any major problems with it apart from it's huge size and weight. But in this little time, it's LCD has stopped working!!The camera would start but the LCD wont. Just imagine you buy a new camera and in just a month's time,it stops working. Now I need to ship it to Minolta's Service Center and will have to bear a lot of Shipping charges. And I have a lot of precious occasions upcoming and will be missing them without my camera. Also it drains the batteries like hell. With 4 batteries, actually the camera should be able to work for longer duration but it's the other way. Moreover it's too slow in focusing. After such a bad experience, I would not recommend anybody to buy this camera.

4-0 out of 5 stars A professional's review, in a nutshell.
I won't repeat what dozens of other reviewers have said. I'm a professional photographer of fifteen years, and I look at things as they are..not as what people thought they should be.

1. This is a point and shoot. You will not get professional results from a point and shoot, whether it's 1 megapixel or 10 megapixels. The CCD sensor does not make the photo, the LENS makes the photo.

2. Autofucus on a point and shoot digital will always be substandard to an SLR. Smaller lens, less light, more "hunt and peck" for focusing. You can always cheat and use "landscape" mode.

3. Battery life is great; just get a set of 2500mAh rechargeables, and you are good for days!

4. 8x10's from this camera are decent; good enough to please your grandma, anyway. If you want fabulous 8x10's, you need to either stick with film, or get a digital SLR.

5. Of course there are deviations in color cast and noise at higher resolutions. If you want to see even MORE of this, get a 6or 8 megapixel point and shoot camera!

6. Finally, if you are a consumer who wants a great little digital camera to take family photos on vacations, picnics, and visits to relatives, you can't go wrong with this camera. If you want professional results, why are you looking at a point and shoot, anyway?

Think about it. ;)

3-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want to use it for
I had this camera for about a year before I decided to sell it. It's fairly simple to use but even after figuring it out there just seems to be too many submenus to go through just to change one setting. So if you need to change the setting to capture the picture you want at the right moment, you better have fast hands/fingers. Battery life is pretty typical.. not very good. For me, the camera is pretty large for being considered a point-and-shoot (I believe it is, but not sure) and not an SLR, but it really depends on what you consider small/large. It comes with a neck strap that connects to both ends of the camera, so that may say something about the size. It's not very portable and it can feel quite heavy after it's been hanging from your neck for awhile. Also, having a pop-off/-on lens cover can cause you to become a bit clumsy when you're in a rush to take a picture or to re-cover it. Again, it depends on what you plan to use the camera for. In my case, it wasn't quite what I wanted in the end. However, I can't say that I had any complaints about the quality of the pictures. ... Read more

Olympus C-740 3MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Zoom
by Olympus
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $459.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Point and shoot ease and full manual controls, the Olympus Camedia C-740 delivers sharp, crisp 3.2-megapixel images for print enlargements up to 11 x 14 inches. With its powerful 10x optical zoom digital camera (30x total zoom when combined with the 3x digital zoom), you'll capture image detail you didn't know existed. The Camedia C-740 also features a more compact body than its predecessor (the C-730), a new extra-low dispersion (ED) lens, movie mode, a built-in flash, and compatibility with XD memory cards.

Optics and Resolution
The 3.2-megapixel Olympus C-740 digital camera can capture images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels; it can also produce 3200 x 2400 pixel images through interpolation for extra-large prints. It boasts an outstanding Olympus aspherical glass 10x zoom lens with 11 lenses in 7 groups. When combined with the 3x digital zoom, you get a total zoom of 30x. The F2.8-F3.7 lens has a focal range of 6.3-63mm, or 38–380mm equivalent in 35mm photography. The ED coating on the lens helps reduce the purple fringing normally seen on larger zoom cameras.

The C-740 also features Olympus TruePic technology, which optimizes the image information captured on the CCD before the data is saved by using the brightness and color information of the neighboring pixels when processing the pixel data. This leads to digital pictures that set standards for picture sharpness, contrast, true colors, and gradation.

Storage and Transfer
With the C-740, you can store images on XD memory cards. With the included 16 MB XD card, you can store 20 images at HQ mode (2048 x 1536 pixels). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
In moviemode, the C-740 captures continuous video (without sound) at 15 frames per second in two formats: 320 x 240 (up to 33 seconds) or 160 x 120 pixels (up to 148 seconds). The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

More Features

  • 1.5-inch low-temperature poly-silicon LCD screen and electronic viewfinder.
  • Built-in flash with auto, red-eye reduction, slow synch, and fill in modes.
  • Stitch up to 10 frames to create a panorama effect with Camedia Master software when using Olympus brand XD memory cards.
  • Six scene program modes; Four customizable My Modes let you choose and save preferred settings
  • Image adjustment modes include sharpness, contrast, and saturation (adjustable +/- 5 steps).
  • Super macro mode gets as close as 1.2 inches away from your subject.

Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by two CR-V3 lithium battery packs (LB-01, included); rechargeable AA-size NiMH batteries are recommended (four are needed to power the C-740). It measures 4.2 x 3.0 x 3.1inches and weighs 10.4 ounces. This package includes the Camedia C-740 digital camera, 16 MB XD memory card, batteries, USB and A/V cables, wrist strap, and CD-ROM with Camedia Master imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pricing
On the Olympus site this model lists a retal price of $349 so the savings are $50

5-0 out of 5 stars Great on my Germany Vacation
I purchased this camera about 3 weeks ago before a 10 day trip to Germany.I was looking for something with a lot of optical zoom, and 10x was plenty.Shooting a lot of sites like castles and such, the zoom really came through. However, a 10x zoom is pretty powerful and no matter the camera you will need a lot of light and a very steady hand to take advantage of the full zoom.I usually shot around 5x - 8x to avoid blurry, shakey pictures. The zoom was awesome on a couple of occasions when a smaller zoom would have made worthless pictures.

On one day I was trying to shoot the Neuschwanstein Castle (Disney's model castle in Bavaria) and it was very foggy. My 2x Canon just could not get close enough to get any detail through the fog.The Olympus took some spectacular pictures. Some were very cool with the fog, and I was excited at how well they turned out when I got them up on my computer monitor.

This camera is easy to use with the "Auto" mode, but you can also customize a lot of stuff if you are a really photo pro.3.2 megapixels is plenty enough for me.In fact, I would rather have this camera with the huge zoom than another camera with more pixels.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've not taken a bad picture yet
I've not taken a bad picture with this camera yet that wasn't a user error.I love the crisp, clear pictures I get with both macro settings and in shooting long distances.I've uploaded a couple of macro shots to show what an amateur can do with this camera. For the price, you can't go wrong.(I actually traded *down* from a 6 MP Sony to this and like this one MUCH better.) ... In addition to taking still photos, the SD100 can also record up to 3 minutes of video with sound. It has three resolution settings: 640 x 480 (VGA), 320 x 240, and 160 x 120. You can record for up to 30 seconds per clip at 640 x 480, or 3 minutes at the lower resolutions. Note that you cannot use the optical zoom when in movie mode. The included 16 MB memory card can hold 13 seconds of video at the highest setting.

Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with its lineup of digital cameras. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. Of course, photos from your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjet printer, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computer screen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous little camera!
I have many cameras, and use a Nikon DSLR.But for Point and Shoot, CANON RULES!

This is now an older model, and I just got one new, they are still around if you look.

I just love it.I wish it used CF cards like my other cameras but it uses the SD card.I would get a minimum of 256mb.And get a spare battery.

I have 5 digital cameras now, all for different reasons. This little jewel is now my carry around camera. And I just love it.

Canon software for it's point and shoots is the best on the market (of software tha comes with camera).

If you need "better software", get Photoshop ELements for about $100.This is also best of breed.

This thing is sooooo small and cute. And it's easy to use.Pictures are GREAT.The in camera EXIF processing of image is great, and for snapshots, all I have to do is crop them sometimes...no other tweaking of image is needed.

Love it!Highly recommeded!

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid little workhorse!
But to say that does not do it justice! This takes great shots, clear and well lit. It has a simple set up and is a compact and sexy little number. Very easy to get used to in all respects and a tough little cookie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Snapshots, Simple.
This camera is extremely stylish and compact.Great for snapshots and other pictures of friends and things like that, but if you plan on taking lots of pictures of sporting events or nature, go with a camera with better optical zoom.Other than the zoom, the feature-set is simple and straightforward, perfect for someone who just wants pictures without the fuss. ... Nikon Coolpix 3100 3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
by Nikon
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Nikon Coolpix 3100 is a great choice for digital photography beginners, offering a compact size, 3.2-megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, and a bevy of automated scene controls that are customizeable.

One of the most impressive features of the Nikon 3100 is its size. From the online pictures we originally viewed, we imagined it to be large and a bit clunky. And while it’s a bit chunkier than other sleeker cameras, the 3100 is surprisingly small. Plus, the rounded ergonomic hand grip rested comfortably and securely in our hand.

The Nikon 3100 offersa whopping 14 scene modes that automatically set the camera’s white balance, exposure, and focusing point for different situations. The easy-to-learn software system features large icons and text to guide you through your choices. And some of the modes even provide an "assist" feature, with outlines of figures or landscapes to help line up the shot.

We had fun playing around with the scene modes and snapping pictures that made the most out of the shooting environment. However, we felt we lost some spontaneity if we relied too much on switching through the modes.

The 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor captures bright images that can be printed up to 11 x 14 inches. The movie mode captures smooth video up to 640 x 480 pixels for 20 seconds (or a more jaggy 40-second, 320 x 240-pixel videos), but it doesn’t offer any sound.

The Nikon 3100 is an affordable choice for a point-and-shoot camera that offers sharp, bright images and brings a lot of flexibility to the party. It comes with a starter 16 MB memory card and alkaline batteries, and we recommend a higher-capacity Compactflash card and rechargeable AA-size NiMH batteries.--Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Compact size, comfortable in the hand
  • Customizeable scene modes
  • 3.2-megapixel resolution for prints up to 11 x 14 inches

Cons:

  • Scene modes can be a bit too customizeable, and distract you from the shot

2-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't hold up
I've had this camera a year and a half.I got it right after it came on the market and at that time the reviews were all good. I was really pleased with it except for the way it eats batteries. In cold weather I can only get two photos on recharged batteries, and where I live it is cold much of the year. I liked the small size and The picture quality was really great. Everyone admired the photos I took with this camera. But the on-off control has broken and fallen off.And no wonder; the fault was with a very cheesy thin plastic part that broke because it couldn't take the wear and tear of being turned on and off.For what it cost, I should have had much more use from it.The other downsides to this camera were that I had to buy as extras all the cords, transformer, case, memory cardsand other accessories needed to make it functional.Nothing came with it except a small 8mb memory card. Now I'm stuck with a couple hundred dollars worth of accessories that are all useless with another camera. If I had it to do over again, I would not buy this camera.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great quality images.. not so sure about other things though
I've had this camera for a few months, and I bought it online as a refurbished item. I don't know if this is because it was a refurbished item, or if it's an actual issue with the cameras itself but this camera recently just died. I've tried a couple different batteries, and still no luck. It did this before, but it started working again after I left it alone for about a week.

But as others have said, this camera does have GREAT image quality. However, it does take a while to save the image and the autozoom is dreadfully slow. It might be worth the money, I can't really say.. but from my experience, no. The battery life is horrible.

I'd say the size of the camera, quality images, and numerous features are the only good things about this camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars jealous user
arrrgh!!! i'm so jealous of you people who get to buy this great little camera for this price. i bought this for about $100 more when it 1st came out (maybe 2 or 2 1/2 years ago). but i think it's still worth it. i only know how to work 2 of the knob settings, yet i still love it.
the life of a "stored recharged battery is short and unpredictable, but after reading "mermaid 2663's" reveiw, i'll take her advise and charge them the day before use.
the pictures come out great. i've taken pictures of pictures and the outcome is pretty good.
i got the perfect little nikon case on e-bay for $7.
sometimes i wonder if it's now obsolete, but
i still get compliments on my camera and pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great in W2Ksp4 and WXPsp2, but not in Linux
This reader has installed automatically and worked faultlessly for months in my computers running Win 2K and Win XP (both have PC-Cillin AV and AdAware, avoiding the previously reported and typically idiotic Norton AV-induced messes), but it will not work AT ALL in Linux, nor apparently will any other USB multi-card reader without modifying the Linux kernel. It would be easier for most Linux newbies to buy Sandisk's single USB reader for Compact Flash, if that's what they use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional value; top notch in the market for card readers
This card reader is unlike any other. It is extremely versatile, and while it accepts 8 different types of cards, it manages to do so with a well-designed 4 slots that each accept multiple types of cards. This is a versatile piece of equipment in a very small and very elegant package.I don't like extra pieces of bulky equipment sitting on my desk, but this is a great design that looks fine beside by monitor.

It lights up when a card is accepted, and I've never had any problems with it not reading a card on the first try.It assigns drive letters to each slot on my computer, and it's a breezey 5 second operation to read a card and copy the contents to my hard drive.

The was completely plug and play.I don't think I read any of the enclosed instructions or manual at all.

Exceptional value, elegant design, and above all, a functional product.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Discontinued Model
Don't bother buying it since it is discontinued from the manufacturer.Plus, this doesn't work out of the box.Junk. ... Read more

Canon i470D Photo Printer
by Canon Office Products
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Canon i470D Photo Printer delivers high-quality photos from your computer or directly from removable memory, as well as detailed printing from the Web and crisp text. It achieves print speeds of up to 18 pages per minute in black and up to 12 ppm in color, along with resolution of up to 4,800 x 1,200 color dpi.

The i470D comes with a built-in print-operation panel, Canon Photo Viewer software, and slots for CompactFlash card, Memory Stick, Microdrive, SmartMedia, SD Card, and MultimediaCard. You can print with or without your computer--just connect a compatible Canon digital camera or camcorder to your i470D printer and print (see specifications for a list of compatible cameras).

The unit's LCD simplifies printing without your computer, offering access to features like image selection, size, paper selection, date stamp, and number of prints. Canon Photo Viewer software is automatically installed with the printer driver and lets you view images on your monitor while you print using the printer's operation panel.

The i470D produces edge-to-edge borderless printing (4 x 6-inch, 5 x 7-inch, or 8.5 x 11-inch prints) with the look and feel of a traditional photograph. The printer generates 4 x 6-inch prints in approximately 93 seconds. Canon advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology uses a nozzle system that ejects consistent, prescribed-volume droplets in microscopic sizes for fine detail.

The i470D supports the worldwide standard Exif 2.2 (Exchangeable Image Format File), so when an Exif-compliant camera captures a photo, important camera settings and shooting conditions are saved in the JPEG image file. Easy-PhotoPrint software analyzes the recorded data and automatically adjusts printer driver settings for optimum image processing. To simplify Web-page printing, Canon also includes Easy-WebPrint software (Windows only), so pages print just as they're seen onscreen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome printer
I bought this printer to make photo pictures with my Kodak digital camera.I liked the idea that you could print pictures with it and not have to have it hooked up to a computer.

The photos that print off of this thing are awesome. You can't tell if it came from the photo shop or from my printer.

The cost to use this printer is 2 to 3 times cheaper than my Lexmark or Compaq printer.I finally got rid of those and just use my Canon printer.

It is quieter than my other two printers, too.Cheaper to run, quieter and great print quality. What more could you ask for??!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best printer I've ever owned!
I've been through a lot of crappy printers and this one was the best I've ever had. It's held up through 4 moves, a lot of printing through grad school, and the best part is that the ink cartridges are cheap and last a long time!I also recently discovered that it prints great pics! All around, you couldn't ask for more for $99.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performer on 4X6 photos
The Canon i470D has turned out to be a very good investment.I am in electronics sales and we are constantly told to that "features tell & benefits sell!"

Well, this printer has provided me with a lot of benefits.I've had it for a year and I love it.

Benefits are: solid printer for Word documents, spreadsheets and especially WEB pages. It has not smeared or clogged the heads or printer as my old HP 660CES.

But the biggest benefit is that I can print crystal clear 4X6 prints of my new gradnson. I give them to relatives and not a one guessed that I printed them on a PC printer.I use Canon glossy photo paper but just found that FUJIFILM glossy works just as well.

Bottom line is that this printer provides me with all the benefits I was looking for. I hightly recommend it for someone like me who dowsn't want to be too technical but get a printer that works well over the long haul.

PS, I also have a Canon CanoScan D1250U2F Color Image Scanner and also got it a year ago.It also has provided me with a lot of benefits.

I am getting a new digital camera for the holidays and most likely will get a Canon Powershot A95 when the price reaches around $300.I think the 3 should really work well together. Since I am not a real techie I think this combo will suit me just fine. ... Read more
