    Editorial Review

Delivering top-notch performance and high resolution at an affordable price, the Nikon D70 digital SLR offers easy-to-use yet powerful features to a wide range of users--from novices to serious and experienced photo enthusiasts. Its DX format 6.1-effective megapixel CCD sensor is optimized to deliver images with excellent sharpness and clarity, and it's compatible with Nikon's DX Nikkor lenses.

    Optics and Resolution
The D70 incorporates a next-generation 6.1-effective megapixel DX format CCD image sensor that produces 3008 x 2000-pixel images, and is optimized to deliver a wide dynamic range and superbly sharp details. It also has 2240 x 1488 and 1504 x 1000 resolution modes.

Nikon programmed the D70's advanced system LSI processor for improved performance to produce vivid colors and clarity, optimized auto white balance, auto tone and color control, and to run real-time processes that diminish digital noise in long exposure shots for cleaner overall results.

    More Features
The Nikon D70 has been designed to offer faster operation at nearly every level of performance, with the camera ready to shoot the instant it's turned on. Compressed NEF (RAW) files are processed and stored exponentially faster, making shooting in compressed NEF mode easier and more convenient than ever. It can shoot a rapid 3 frames per second for a continuous burst of 144 pictures (using the JPEG Normal/Large setting and a 256 MB CompactFlash card) due to improved buffer memory handling, faster image processing, increased memory card access speed, and greater system bus bandwidth.

    Other features include:

    • Built-in Speedlight flash with auto pop-up
    • 1/8000 second shutter speed and a synch speed of 1/500 second for flash
    • Auto modes include Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sports, Night Portrait, and Night Landscape
    • 25 Custom Settings allow you to personalize the operation of your D70 to match your shooting style or the demands of different shooting conditions
    • Shoot in any lighting environment with the D70's built-in creative lighting system and 3D Color Matrix meter with 1,005-pixel RGB Sensor
    • The D70 displays menus with simple or detailed information on a 1.8-inch LCD viewing screen
    • Choose from a variety of file formats, including Nikon's RAW mode (NEF), TIFF, JPEG formats or Nikon's exclusive compressed JPEG + NEF combination
    • ISO standard hot-shoe with safety lock
    • Optical viewfinder features high magnification, diopter correction, complete info display, and On-Demand grid lines to aid in composition
    • High-speed, high precision 5-area AF system with predictive focus tracking and Lock-on ensures quick response and sharp focus
    Storage and Transfer
Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I/II), and the camera is compatible with MicroDrives (no memory card is included with this package). Files can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1 connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

    Power and Size
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-Ion battery pack (EN-EL3, included) or three CR2 lithium batteries (with supplied MS-D70 battery holder). It measures 5.5 x 4.4 x 3.1 inches and weighs 21 ounces (camera body only without batteries).

    What's in the Box
This package includes the Nikon D70 camera body, strap, body cap, eyepiece cap, LCD monitor cover, USB and A/V cables, rechargeable lithium-ion battery (EN-EL3), battery charger (MH-18), CR2 battery holder (MS-D70), and Picture Project CD-ROM. Optional accessories include: Rechargeable Li-ion Battery (EN-EL3), Multi Charger (MH-19), Quick Charger (MH-18), AC Adapter (EH-5), Speedlight SB-800/600, Nikon Capture 4 (ver.4.1) Software, Semi-Soft Case (CF-D7)0, Remote Controller (ML-L3). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Nikon 'nuff said.
I've been a Nikon owner for 15 years now and finally made the change to digital.I love everything about the camera...except for the limited use of the older flashes.I have a SB24 flash that was a wonderful flash for the film cameras, but it is of limited use now with the D70.But I guess that's to be expected to keep moving forward.I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a DSLR whether they have Nikon lenses or not.

1-0 out of 5 stars when it works it's great
My camera is at Nikon for second repair, First time the Flash would not retract, They fixed that problem, Now it is back as the camera does not recognise that a memory card is present. I m now in my second week of waiting for this repair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, Watch out for scammers even here on Amazon
This is a good camera. The only real complaint is the lack of raw jpeg or tiff storage (you can store raw or compressed jpeg only)

That means a lot of dark room work, or a lot a reduction in printable size. ISO Range is also limited to 200 in the lower end.

A word of caution. When you see this camera selling for new at a price that is significantly below what the Amazon vendor Adorama offers (A reputable lower prices kind of firm) be very cautious.

There are a lot of scams where they offer you a ridiculously low price ($500) for new camera but only if you contact them first. Then they try and upsell you and if you dont buy a bunch of over priced very expensive garbage they cancel your order, but then they have you credit info.

[...]look at Genius Cameras to get a good idea of how this works.

Good luck, great camera. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the D70
A close friend made the unfortunate mistake of plunking down 2 grand for this camera.Honestly Olympus produces cameras that can do the same thing for $400.I've used hers and the image quality is horrible and the colours are wrong 9 times out of 10.If you're going to spend that much on a camera, get the D70 instead and buy a nice extra lens or some other gadgets to go with. The pictures are better and it offers more MP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gear
I have been working for a major daily newspaper in Baltimore for 2 decades. Perhaps that will qualify me as an expert in photography. I have been shooting digital imagery since the late 1990s. Maybe that qualifies me as an expert in digital photography. This may be long- winded, but it's extensive and can be useful.

I received the Nikon D2H camera -- 2 bodies total -- over one year ago. I think I got them shortly after the D2H system was released in 2003. Since then, I have used them to shoot images of all types -- documentary, sports, daytime, available light, flash, and dead- of- night -- for the paper I work for. This is the only camera I work with.

First, please read the manual. There is a ton of information there, and the information is terrific to begin with. The D2H is highly- configurable, with screen after screen that you can set for your own specific use (resist lending the camera to anyone for a long period of time, for your camera may be returned with many of your settings changed so much that it acts like a thoroughly different camera).

I'll just punch right in to the way it feels. The camera is a rather heavy beast, and for some, there can be an amount of shoulder or neck fatigue when using it for hours per day, like I do. But the camera feels well in hand and the controls are easy to move through. I've long since given up using any camera bag. All I have are a fanny pack for a 14mm, 55mm, teleconverters and 2 extra camera batteries and flashes clipped to its belt. And the D2H's hold the 17-35mm Nikon and the 80-200mm Nikon one- touch or the Sigma 120-300mm 2- touch.

Shooting is a breeze. The batteries let you shoot long before the need to recharge. I have my D2H set on ISO 200 or 400 most of the time and sacrifice shutter speed for lower ISO as often as I can, because the higher ISOs bring digital noise and a loss in color saturation. Just today, I purchased digital noise plug ins for Photoshop to limit this, and that's a wonderful thing to invest in with this camera when you must shoot action photography with no flash at ISO 800 and above.

I now have little problems with capturing images in even barely- limited lighting. I recently shot stars and a plane wing from my seat of an Airbus at 36,000 feet over the Pacific at 30 seconds wide open @ f/ 2.8, and it looks tons better than night shots via the D1H, which lacked the internal digital noise filter. That filter kicks in at around 1/2 second and longer exposures, and can make you wait as long as your image you've shot to strip your long exposure of much of the digital noise. When you shoot this way (and in general), don't simply react by cranking up ISO because you will not be happy with your results.

The camera can be loud. At over 7 frames per second, it can make you obvious in a quiet room. Shooting sensitive situations can be testy, so limit your shooting to single frames. I wish this camera had an option to silence this camera, but since the mirror has to raise and lower, there's no chance to do this.

Am I happy with the D2H? Definitely, yes. Are there improvements that can be made? Yes. But the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. People have been bailing out of using the Nikon system and going Canon, which has some incredible gear, I won't deny that. But instead of simply giving up on your system of equipment, learn how to use the D2H well and you'll be much happier than ever. And that means you should push its qualities to the max while respecting its limitations.

For instance, white balance. This can be the best thing for you, or the worst thing you've ever dealt with, depending upon how you approach it. Daylight, grey skies, dusk and dawn are easy, because you can set the camera to daylight, flash, shadow (for dusk and dawn times) and even the fluorescent and incandescent tend to be right in the ballpark. But the horrible mixed light or the street lamps that glow blue/green or orange- red from mercury vapor can be the death of an image if you don't properly use white balance. Preset white balance is king, here. I can get grey, black and white when I preset in mercury vapor light. And I used the preset for any light that the auto white balance setting can't figure. There is also a setting to dial in kelvin temps as well! If you do this (and I can go on for miles here), you're on your way. So, with trying this D2H, or considering it, read through some of the digital D2H forums and ignore the posts that slam the camera without giving instances. Generally, those who pan the camera have not tried to understand it. I can bang off images to disprove where they suggest this camera will fail. When you have decent light, you'll have a decent image. But when you try to use it without learning how you can maximize the system, you will come about shooting images that are terrible and unprintable.

In closing, I have not been paid by anyone, I have no Nikon stock and have no outside interest in writing this except that I'm giving the D2H credit where it's long overdue.

4-0 out of 5 stars ASolid Camera at a great price
I've had my D2H for 9 months now. I've heard of the magenta skin tones issue but have never seen it..skin tones on my unit are great. It seems this issue plagued a minority of users.

Camera is very fast, exposes well and delivers results. It's primarily designed to be a sports and Photojournalism camera -- for situations where speed counts. It's a 4 megapixel wonder -- it's true it only has 4 megapixels, but they are 4 GREAT megapixels. Images upsize wonderfully.

I love my unit, and am debating whether to buy a second one as a backup, or wait for the D2X. The price of the D2x is making that decision a bit easier and I'm leaning toward another D2H. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Improves your grip, but isn't perfect
If you have large hands and don't like the lack of support on the bottom of the camera, this grip will enhance your hold on the camera and give you a secure vertical grip with a second shutter release. Both control wheels are present and in the same relative position as the main body when used in vertical mode. A lock switch will prevent you from accidentally taking a shot by hitting the release with the palm of your hand, which happens to me frequently. The grip also adds a 10-pin terminal, which the D100 body doesn't have, so you can use your old remote release accessories.

The built-in audio recorder is handy for keeping track of subject names when you don't have time to take notes and the audio is stored as a MP3 file on the card. If you use iPhoto you'll need to keep track of the audio files manually, but if you keep your photos organized in Nikon's Nikon View the audio is attached to the picture and ready to play for you at the touch of a button.

The grip lacks a separate focus area selector; it's incorporated into the AE-L/AF-L button which can be clumsy and hard to use under pressure. I would have also liked to see a sensor in the grip that automatically rotates vertical images so you don't have to do it in software, but that feature is not available.

The ability to use two EN-EL3 is very nice and gives you great shooting capacity, but you can also use it with a single battery just fine. I've tried using rechargeable AAs, but even freshly charged ones show up as half dead on the camera's meter. All the rechargeable AAs I've come across are 1.2V instead of the standard 1.5, so they aren't really suitable for this power-hungry camera.

I was worried it wouldn't properly fit my AH-4 handstrap, but the fit is perfect. It actually seems more comfortable than it did with my old N90/grip. The camera is very tall when mounted on a tripod and there is more flex than I would like to see. If you're using a heavy lens without a tripod collar, you might want to remove the vertical grip to reduce camera shake. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BLOWS AWAY MICRODRIVES IN SPEED DEPARTMENT
These lexar 40x & 80x CF cards are great storage cards for devices that need high speed read/write capability.

Note: Microdrives are nice for MP3's players or low end pocket PCs but they are terrible options for cameras because the read and write speeds are too slow for quick shooting.

So when you need to take quick pictures or get information off the drive fast (streaming video . . .etc.)These Lexars and the SanDisk ULTRA II (my personal favorite) are the only ones I would recommend, and I do so highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go for the Microdrive instead
For 20% less you can get twice as much memory with a 2GB Microdrive or for only 30% more you could get 4 times as much memeory with a 4Gb model.Dollar per byte, Lexar memory cards are a bad deal compared to the hard drive and the HD meets all the same compatability standards.Forget this card and get more for your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about.Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexar Media 512MB 40X CompactFlash Pro, like most 512MB cards, will store on average 568 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 426 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,256 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 204 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 160 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this 512MB card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CF Card For Mid-High End Cameras
I've been using my 512 meg 40X Lexar card in my Canon Digital Rebel for some time now.I have found the speed of this card is much faster in both saving and downloading images compared to a standard SanDisk card. Speed is comparable to the SanDisk UltraII card which is very similar to the Lexar 40X.The included USB cable is only for Lexar cards, but it's a really nice, compact unit.Be careful to download the Image Rescue software from the card before you erase the card (the software is on the flash card).
When taking burst mode shots (2.5 fps) the save time is easily twice as fast as a standard card.As with anything, what you are taking a picture of and the settings on the camera will affect how much data is being written, and thus how fast it is perceived by the user.
Not all cameras can take full advantage of the speed, so check with Lexar or your camera maker to make sure the camera itself can write data this fast.Even if your camera can't take full advantage of the speed, it is really nice to be able to copy images to your computer so much faster than regular flash using the jump cable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great card, but USB reader is overhyped
I bought this for my Canon Digital Rebel and Powershot S400 cameras, and it works great. If you're using an old slow card, and not a high-speed Lexar or Sandisk Ultra card, you can notice the difference in upgrading to a faster card!If you take photos in rapid succession, the write time is much faster, and maybe even battery life is longer since the camera spends less time writing.(Of course, the quality of your photos will remain exactly the same.)

However, the USB card reader that comes with this Lexar card is NOT compatible with other brands of flash cards! It works fine with the Lexar card, but DOES NOT WORK with other brands such as my Sandisk or Canon cards.Keep in mind that if you have a USB 2.0 port, and a USB 2.0 device, your photos will transmit from your camera to your computer MUCH faster.(And most digital cameras are still the older USB 1.1, so a card reader makes a huge difference in transfer time.) ... Lexar Media FireWire CompactFlash Digital Film Reader (RW011001)
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $119.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Lexar Media's FireWire CompactFlash digital film reader makes moving files from your camera to your computer easy--just pop in a CompactFlash card and go. The FireWire connection makes connecting and disconnecting simple, as FireWire allows insertion and removal of the reader without rebooting. Its small size lets you throw the cable in your bag with your camera and connect to your PC wherever you need to.

The reader easily connects to your computer through your IEEE 1394 port and requires no external AC power. You can use your batteries for taking more pictures with your camera instead of transferring images to your computer.

The FireWire digital media reader is up to four times faster than using a USB film reader, achieving high-speed transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps. This is especially important when you are trying to download many digital-image files to your computer.

The reader supports Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards. System requirements for Windows PCs include a Pentium-compatible processor; Microsoft Windows 98 SE, 2000, or Me; and one available IEEE 1394 port (6-pin connector). Requirements for Macintosh computers are Mac OS 9.0 or later, a built-in FireWire port, Apple FireWire 2.4 or later, and a CD-ROM drive or equivalent. Lexar covers this product with a one-year limited warranty and offers free technical support. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good at first but then died
This product worked fine for about a year and then died.It seems as this is a common problem.Be careful.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 never worked properly
I went through two before I gave up, the first one never worked proeprly. It transferred very slowly at first and then not at all.I RMA'd the first one and the one that replaced it worked for two uses before dying.I've since picked up a $8 usb reader that is much slower but much more reliable.I've done lots of video editing with the firewire card so I don't know what kept killing the drives. It'll take some real convincing to get me to buy another lexar product.I hate being negative, but this experience really soured me.It sounds like many have had better success than I, but be ware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it is supposed to do
1.Works when you plug it in (Im using a mac G4).No need to configure anything, just plug it in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adobe makes a great product
This is a very nice, relatively smooth upgrade, I haven't had any major issues. The new filters pallette is very nice to work with - it saves a good amount of time allowing you to apply mulitple transformations within one window.

The isues that I have had:

-it does crash in XP when using the right mouse click to "open file with"...it works much better if the program is opened first and then the file is opened ...I haven't upgraded my Mac yet, so I'm not sure if the situation with be the same on the OSX platform.

    - this is very minor but the pixel aspect ratio is set for video when I open a Bitmap-TIFF...it's a file type that the computer somehow sees as a preview for video, but it's a simple fix - just change the pixel aspect ration view back to square...I must admit the first time it happened and my image loaded looking all squished, I got that curious dog look on my face, cocked my head to the side wondering "what the heck is this?"

    - Some of my files which are 250MB working in 7.0 seem to be exploding to 400MB in CS... this is something which I haven't been able to trace or figure out just yet, but it does cause significant problems for working speed...I only have 1.3GB of RAM which is fine for a 250MB drawing but not sufficient for a 400MB drawing.I'll have to delve deeper into the software to see if I can figure this one out.

Overall, it seems like a fine upgrade, but as with most upgrades there are some issues/surprises when you make the switch.

Adobe's newest release of Photoshop, is great news for digital photographers amongst others. This version now brings 16-bit suport to Photoshop. That means that we can now work with RAW camera files with full support of most Photoshop tools. The changes are more behind the scenes than they are cosmetic. Being able to customize your own keyboard shortcuts is a big timesafer. You can't go wrong with this upgrade! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Though Apple's new 17-inch PowerBook G4 rates as its finest notebook ever and one of the most sophisticated portable computers in history, this model, the considerably more affordable 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A, is not far off the pace of its big brother. While it sports a smaller display, a slightly slower processor, and a more compact profile, this 15-inch PowerBook nevertheless incorporates all the other amenities that make its 17-inch sibling so desirable.

Driving the 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A is a fast PowerPC G4 processor running at 1.33 GHz and featuring 512 KB Level 2 cache for rapid retrieval of recently accessed data. Apple has added 512 MB of ultra-fast PC2700 (333 MHz) DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics processor with 64 MB dedicated video memory, thus ensuring smooth operation during high-demand tasks such as 3-D games, 3-D drawing and multitasking.

This high-speed architecture continues throughout the unit, where you’ll find connectivity options such a standard FireWire interface, an ultra-fast Apple-designed FireWire 800 port, two 480 Mbps USB 2.0 ports, integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet, 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless, and built-in Bluetooth for the new breed of cordless digital peripherals. Storage facilities include a spacious ATA/100 80 GB hard disk and a versatile DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive through which you can burn audio CDs, backup critical and write DVD-R discs at 2X speed.

Visually, the aluminum alloy-clad 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A is as dramatic as it is functional. Sporting a 15.2-inch (diagonal) display capable of 1280 by 854 resolution, the unit is nevertheless surprisingly thin and lightweight at 13.7 by 9.5 by 1 inch and just 5.6 pounds. Other unique perks include a tap/double tap/drag trackpad, a convenient backlit keyboard for low-light situations, and a DVI output for efficient digital interfacing with LCD monitors. Battery life is estimated at an admirable 4.5 hours under ideal conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like driving BMW
Like it or not, I've used Windows/PC for the past 12 years. Macintosh occasionally appealed to me, but I didn't get it partly because it's expensive, partly because of compatibility. At work and at home, I owned: Dell Inspiron, Thinkpad, Dell/HP Desktops, running Windows 98/2000/XP. Also I tinkered with Sun workstations running UNIX (I'm an EE guy and have a respect for UNIX).
After 12 years of Microsoft (and blue screens), I made a bold switch to Apple Powerbook 15" with 1.5GHz/512RAM/80Gb, and I'm so happy with this system that even 5 stars are not high enough.

    - The sleek aluminum chassis and the wide screen generate Wow! effect.
    - This 15" machine is lighter than my old Dell laptop.
    - It's very quiet during operation, but the bottom side may occasionally become hot.
    - The keyboard has a good depth and touch, and the backlit keyboard is simply cool.
    - Using the built-in microphone, you can play the bundled 3-D chess game via OS X's voice-recognition. Isn't that futuristic?

About software compatibility (from EE guy's viewpoint):
    - MS Office 2004 for Mac became my favorite patch of programs. Even better than the XP version - a very important factor in my decision to switch.
    - Math tools, especially Mathematica 5 and Matlab, run well on Mac.
    - Favorite design tools, Adobe Photoshop and Carrara 3, work well. After all, Mac was built for them.

    - There are tons of open source programs you can use: GIMP, A/G BLAST, ...
    - Some layout and CAD tools are not compatible. I have to use old PC. For those number-crunching jobs, however, I don't use laptop anyhow.

As much as I enjoy steering this elegant silver machine, I love to navigate through the Mac OS X. As Sun's Bill Joy said during an interview, "Mac OS X is rock solid". I like the idea of using UNIX commands on my Mac, although I can do everything with the user-friendly Mac interface.

Yes, Powerbook is more expensive compared with Dell and other PCs, but you get what you pay for: top-quality components, futuristic functionality, eye-catching design, and the enormous joy of owning a rock-solid elegant machine (like BMW!). You'll definitely like this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough laptop!
My PowerBook has been accidentally dropped twice. The first time it fell from a table as my kids were watching a DVD movie from the laptop. The second time my carrying fell from a reception counter. The PowerBook is still running as if nothing had happened.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice looks, but don't look at the price
I switched from Apple to Centrino because it cost half as much and the battery lasted twice as long. Now I really like Apple just fine, but I can't see spending more money to get a slower computer. In fact almost all notebooks are made buy the same few companies, so why does Apple charge more?I guess if people will pay it, Apple will charge it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Discus 3.0.4 upgrade Label/Jewel Case Software is Tops
I own Toast 6 with two upgrades. (6.0.5) Using OS X 3.4 I needed a software update for my LaCie Burner.
The Technical Help is quick and fast at Toast/Roxio. They told me to download it and gave me the link.
Last night I Toasted some CD-ROM's for training Case Managers. I burned Six CD and Printed Labels and Jewel Case Inserts and Tray liner in a half hour.

The extra $20 to upgrade to Discus 3.0.4 is well worth the Time and Money. (Newer Software and Full artwork) Real Pro looking Artwork and Label from a great Library. You can use any brand of Paper (Avery, Neato, Memorex etc.) and even nudge 0.5 mm adjustment if necessary. Memorex tray liners got an adjustment and it work for all futures use of that paper. This software lets you import for iTunes and Toast what you are Toasting for a list of software or Song Lists etc. Software so easy, I did NOT read the directions. Just do what you want to do the MAC way. I Like the Neato Jewel case booklets for Training instructions (Music Album Notes) and Memorex tray liners. I have one software and Four brand of paper
You can even print business cards on which I ton of good comments. "What a Beautiful Card."
Spin Doctor takes out the starches on old LP's for converting to CD's.
I was so happy with the Toast 6 package I did not take the rebate offer. I also used Toast 5 Lite that came with my LaCie.
A New feature lets you Toast to a burner over the internet which are great for Training DVD's to people 15 miles away.

Give the Package Bundle five stars

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Mac owner!
When I bought my eMac, this was the first software I HAD to buy.I make a lot of CDs, so I decided that this was a must, and I've owned Easy CD Creator for the PC, so I knew that it would be easy to use and feature most of the functions I would need.

It's true that it meets most of my needs and with a simple, clean interface.I can make a music CD and store files in no time and it can even create Video CDs and DVDs with menus.

Of course, to many, Toast may seem redundant, as Mac OS X can handle most of your burning needs natively, but I prefer to use 3rd party software for those things, as it was created specifically for that purpose. However, the two things that Toast can do that Panther cannot are create Video CDs and burn DVDs directly from MPEG and Quicktime files without the need to demux audio.

I get some Japanese TV shows from friends in Japan in MPEG format and I like to watch them on my TV, so it's nice to be able to burn them into VCD or DVD format for viewing and backup. If you do a lot of video downloading, this really can come in handy. Also, it works GREAT with EyeTV (sold separately) for the Mac, so you can record your favorite TV shows and put them on CD!

My only complaint is that the DVD/VCD menu option stinks. There is only one menu interface and you cannot choose layout, music, background photo or anything. It's just a plain blue screen with a thumbnail of the video and text titles. And the thing is, it's not very nice--it's borderline gaudy and not what I'd choose for a standard menu layout.

But, with that aside, this is a product I can wholeheartedly recommend for any Mac user with above-average burning needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burn Baby Burn!
Macs come with quite a robust burner in the Finder and the new iLife '04 goes even further than before in giving users more options to customize their discs. So what exactly does Toast do that the Mac OS can't do on it's own?

    - Multi Session Burning
    - Encrypt data discs with a password
    - Burn exact copies of a disc
    - Choose which OS the disc will be compatible with
    - You can save a burn project so you can burn it again at a later date

These features alone make Toast a very tempting purchase.Thankfully though, it can do much more and it pulls it all off with ease.Drag and drop is about as complicated as the interface gets, but the results are that you have discs burned the way you want that work the way you want.Toast is a powerful, well-rounded, fully featured burning software that just about every user will find useful.

As a bonus you get Discus (for making labels for all those discs you've burnt) and Spin Doctor 2 (for taking out pops and hiss from imported music from records and tapes). ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Designed with the serious graphics user in mind, Epson's Stylus Photo 2200 is stylish and fast and comes packed with user-friendly features. With Epson's new seven-color UltraChrome inks and three times as many nozzles as the popular Stylus 2000P, the 2200 is able to print 8-by-10-inch color photos in under two minutes (in fine mode). The UltraChrome inks are formulated to resist water and light damage and to ensure longevity, all while providing more colors than any other pigment ink on the market.

The versatile 2200 makes it easy to print on envelopes, roll paper, and many types and sizes of single-sheet paper.
A maximum resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 dpi (both color and black and white) results in amazingly accurate prints. The 4-picoliter droplets are the equivalent of 2-picoliter droplets in ordinary dye-base systems, resulting in ultrafine detail and clarity. Interchangeable standard and matte black ink cartridges help you get the best quality from black-and-white prints, while the included Film Factory(TM) with PRINT Image Matching Support software ensures that prints from compatible digital cameras are true to the original image.

The 2200 supports a wide variety of paper types, including glossy, semi-glossy, luster, matte, and Epson's velvet fine art paper, as well as large-format sizes up to 13 by 44 inches. With the included roll paper holder and built-in automatic cutter, you can print borderless images easily, while a photo catcher neatly stacks multiple prints as they are cut.

Compatible with both Mac and PC systems, the 2200 comes backed with a one-year Epson exchange warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photographic printer
I am currently in college studying photography and this printer is our most common printer.

Remember, you're not going to get accurate color with ANY printer. Every printer has it's own specific range of colors it can reproduce. The key to a good printer is getting predictable results.

Hints for good results with less stress:
--> Get profiles for the specific papers you use. (If you don't have the time or equipment to do it yourself, you can find them online.)
--> Turn the printer off when not in use. (This saves the nozzles from getting clogged so much.)
--> The little red lights correspond to the inks. If the 3rd light is on, the 3rd ink is out.
--> If one of the red ink lights is blinking, go ahead and print, it's still got a bit of life in it... if the light is burning steady, change the ink.
--> This is not a document printer. Get a cheap HP for that.
--> You don't need any more than 360ppi in your image. Any more, and you're just making it slower. (Do some tests printing the same photo at different image resolutions. Try 360, 240, 180, 100, 72. See where the resolution falls off, and then you'll know what you really need for a decent print.)
--> Turn off high speed. Sometimes when printers lay ink down in both directions, it can get out of alignment. (I have never seen this, but my professor has, which is why nobody at my school even tries to print at high speed.)
--> Don't print full bleed. Well, you can, it's just better if you don't. Trust me on this.
--> To switch between photo black and matte black ink is a real hassle. You'll use an entire cartridge just to flush out the old ink. So, if you can help it, don't. I wish you could have both and just tell it which black to use, but alas, it's not perfect.
--> Use an image editing program (Adobe Photoshop is best) to make your pictures look the way you want before printing. Target your file for printing. (Meaning: make a duplicate flattened, sized, and sharpened file. Then print.)

My favorite paper is Ilford Smooth Pearl. I use it for just about everything.

For decent black and white prints, use matte black ink on Epson Velvet Fine Art, Watercolor, or Enhanced Matte papers.

    The verdict:
This printer is great! When I set up my own lab, this will be my printer.

I hope this helps you with your purchase!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Epson 2200
As most of the previous reviews have stated this is a great printer and I wholeheartedly agree. I use Adobe Photoshop CS for my photos and the biggest problem I ran into was that the image on my monitor didn't quite match the printed image. This may be OK for some but being a perfectionist I had to adjust the image in Photoshop which is a hit or miss proposition (ie make the image lighter in photoshop to get a darker printed image which was satisfactory). The solution I decided on was to get color management software called MonacoEZcolor (I also got the colorimeter option) so that a color profile can be generated of the monitor and the printer. With the profiles generated you can then set the Photoshop image on your monitor to look like what the printed image will be. Unfortunately to do this I also had to purchase a scanner to profile the printer. $500 later (scanner and color management software with colorimeter) I'm getting better prints but it is costly, however if your a professional or just trying to get the best prints possible you may want to factor in color management software.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the center of my home photo-lab

I have used this printer for over a year now to support my hobby of ultra high resolution semi-digital photography.Using a different Epson product I scan 4x5 film negatives, creating 100 megapixel images, and then print them on my Stylus Photo 2200.I use 13x19 semi-gloss paper, and typically print at maximum quality. The results are vastly better than any photo lab I can imagine.Really -- I can't think of any way to suggest print quality improvement.

I do black-and-white maybe three quarters of the time, and when I do color it's lurid.Detail is astonishing, and I have been very satisfied with the borderless printing. The printer always warns me that it might not do as well at borderless printing, but I tell it not to worry and it always does fine.

I have used only the standard 7 inks.I've been very impressed with how easy ink cartridge replacement has been.I am glad that I have left behind the bad old days of throwing out *all* the ink because *one* of the colors ran out.The 2200 allows me to only replace the ink cartridge that actually ran out, which is even more important for the cityscape photography that I do -- in color, the sky uses a lot of cyan.

I don't know about text quality, since I've never printed any of that, but the thought makes me nervous.Like it would if someone suggested using a thoroughbred horse to pull a plow.Don't do that, it's silly.

Use this printer to make great big beautiful photographic prints of flawless quality on lovely paper. For this purpose, I really can't imagine how it could be better.

If it ever dies, I'll get another just like it.If I ever get rich, I'll get another just like it except even bigger.

    Thanks, Epson.Please keep doing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I have been using the 4000 ED to capture/scan all of my old 35mm negatives (going all the way back the early 1970's).The pictures I am able to print from these scanned negatives are better that the prints made from the negatives!
My only complaint is that the unit only supports 35mm, and doesn't support medium format film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality at an affordable price
I use this to scan 35mm slides for digital prints up to 13x19" so I use the full 4000 ppi capability.I've found it to be easy to use and the final scanned quality to be excellent.Compared to the HP PhotoSmart scanner I was previously using, it's outstanding. The dust removal feature is awesome. The automatic color adjustment works well for some of my older, faded slides, but I wouldn't recommend it for general use.I use 2X averaging to improve noise, although it's probably not necessary. The scanner has other advanced image correction capability but I prefer to do this in PhotoShop where I have better control.Scanning speed at 4000 ppi is less than 1 minute. The final scans are definitely of publishable quality. This scanner has actually allowed me to delay my conversion to a digital SLR, although I'm sure I will eventually succumb.

You just have to know what you're doing :-) I just got this scanner secondhand, and I have XP.

Canon Australia support pages contain information on updating ASPI for Windows XP. http://www.canon.com.au/support/customer/default.asp?DXI=KnowledgeBase/Customer/KBArticleForm&File=KB00191

Canon Europe has an updated CanoScan software download that apparently support XP. http://www.canon-europa.com/cgi-bin/CEDD/list-languages.cgi?catid=4&productid=142&systemid=47

It's not that hard. I love it, and I've only had it for a week or so.

Good product (3 stars) but no driver available for use with Windows XP. I found this out when I moved from a Windows '98 system to an XP system. Planned obsolescence from our friends at Canon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint at heart
I have had this scanner for a year adn a half and have put nearly 5000 slides through it. I am happy with the overall quality of the scans for what I paid for this. I use this as a proofing tool-- I only get my negatives developed (when I shoot prints) and then scan them to proof them. Or if I shoot slides and want to put them on the internet or retouch them. The scanner will make up to an 8x12 at 400dpi. which is okay. Again you must look at what you are paying. The neat scratch removing features that the upper models have would be nice but again repeating for the price this is a great little scanner. I have been happy. I even got it to work in XP but it did take some research. Info for installing in XP or 2000 can be found [online.] ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction book
I bought this book since I want to become a photojournalist.
I am a photographer who has graduated a photo school few months ago. this book isn't for beginners, The little technical data may be misleading if read by a novice. Instead, it deals with content and the thinking and working process of photographers in this field. I find it as a nice introduction to the world of photojournalism, though a little "too good to be true" kind of book. The book definitely doesn't deal with the problems, the deadlines, the failures and the risks. This is like a postcard, where everything is perfect. There is a good side though, it is easily read, and very interesting. You want a more serious book, look some place else...
If you have the spare bucks though, don't hasitate and buy it!!!

Being an avid reader of all things photography, most of the books that actully get published seem to have at least some merit. This book actually achieves the dubious distinction of being utterly useless.

It is nothing more than a scrapbook or stream of consciousness diary of sorts with no substance, no direction and no worthwhile information regarding the picture taking process. This literally could not have taken any effort to "write".The only people who put any effort into this one were the people who chopped down the poor trees to make this thing and the printers and bookbinders who assembled it.Don't waste your time or money on this one.Other than the foregoing, I enjoyed it immensely.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to think, but not how to see
This book is an excellent primer on the basics of photojournalism, and a good how-to guide on becoming a journeyman photojournalist. With chapters on each of the "bread-and-butter" categories of newspaper photography - sports, features, news, etc. - each section has interviews with veteran AP photographers on how they approach these sorts of assignments, and tips to help ensure that one will come back with a serviceable picture. In short, it's a good book for someone who's just getting their feet wet in the business of newspaper photography, and I'm glad it was one of the first books in my photojournalism library.

But much like AP photojournalism itself, the focus of this book is on how to create simple, clean images that tell the immediate story of the day. Except for some talk of basic "picture packages" in the features chapter, there's no suggestions on how to brainstorm and develop an in-depth photos essay, nor is there much type given on taking risks visually with photography, and creating new and innovative images while documenting the world.

In short, this book is a primer, and a fairly decent one at that. But I would urge anyone who picks this up to also get a book or three of photo essays and see how they can take their work to the next level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I recently bought this hardrive for my Sony laptop. Although setup was a little tricky at first (took me a while to figure out that the partition size must be less than 30GB for FAT32 file type), everything else worked out as, if not better, than expected. The drive is very quiet and well designed. As long as the drive doesn't crash in the future, I would have to say I'm very pleased with it so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition for my Macintosh
The Lacie external hard drive works great with my Macintosh iBook right out of the box, with no installation or set-up necessary.

It comes with all the needed power and FireWire cables, so I just had to plug it in, and my computer immediately had another 200 gigabytes of space.

It runs quietly, its metal case does not get too warm, and saving files is as fast as on a built-in hard drive.

(Note: My drive died about 9 months after I got it, but LaCie sent a replacement quickly, and the new one has been working for over a month with no problems. Aside from the one mechanical failure, I have had no problems using the drive on a Macintosh.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition
After a month of hunting storage for my laptop, i narrowed my choice, Maxtor or Lacie. I chose d2 for several reasons,
    * Less Noisy (external drives, drives you mad!)
    * Speed
    * Vertical
    * Transparent connectivity
    * It looks cool too! :-)

I own an Inspiron 8100 and got this as external storage for my media files and back for large application, so far its going very stable and smooth. Five stars for Lacie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mobile Jukebox and more
It's great having my entire cd collection (over 550) in one tiny place. Now I'm listening to music I own some of which I hadn't listened to in years.

I was really excited when I got my iPod. From the packaging, to the device itself, the design is outstanding. Very easy to use. Sound quality is very good. Can be used as a back up hard drive too. Software is a no brainer to use.

I also faced the problem of tracks skipping but all I had to do was delete affected tracks/albums and recopy and they were fine.

Was able to get lots of useful advice from other people's reviews, e.g. how to ensure long battery life (try not to let the battery run out completely) and how to copy music files back to your pc which quite a number of people are unaware can be done (change your folder options to show hidden files). I do it all the time.

So why not 5 stars? It's not perfect. Battery life could be better, and it does scratch rather easily. Oh, did I mention the earphones? Not too good I'm afraid, and very painful on the ears, when worn for a bit. Thank God I had some good Sony headphones. Also, the fact that it does not support the much smaller WMA files which take up much less space than mp3s. I've got about 7300 tracks on my iPod, and only about 4gb space left.

Still a cool device that never fails to turn heads.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for long distance runners!!!
Talk about frustration!! What I thought was a really great break through, turned out to be a total nightmare. After 25 minutes the Ipod would either completely stop working all together or just skip repeatedly then stop. I found out that it was designed to "catch up" after 25 minutes but it wouldnt even start again most of the time, just freeze up and be completely worthless.Returning it was a even bigger nightmare because no one was able to test it out and see that it would malfunction....I guess if you work for Apple stores you dont run. I had to pay a restocking fee to get rid of this nightmare. NEVER will I purchase another item from Apple.I love my Nomad Muvo that I bought, and couldnt be happier.

1-0 out of 5 stars junk
Your better off with a Nomad. I tried 2 ipods and they will only synch with one PC. So if you want to transfer mp3 from pcto another forget this thing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as fast as they claim
Though the concept is great, and the controls are straight forward and easy to use, the Belkin Reader falls short of usability.
While out on a location, I was away from a power source and thought the Belkin reader would be a great alternative to lugging a laptop around for file transfers. Trying to transfer 1000 pics off a 1GB CF card was
impossible. The reader would drain a fully charged ipod and still not finish the transfer. Though it claims firewire transfer speeds, I did some tests from home and found otherwise:

100 compressed 2K pics transferred via:

USB1 card reader to computer 1 min 20 sec.
PCMCIA card reader in laptop 45 seconds.
Belkin Media reader 6 min. 45 sec

This was just a simple example. You can see how hundreds of files would take 30 minutes or more. For the price, I'd suggest buying a few more memory cards and not worry about the transfers until you get home, unless you're in no rush and can charge up the ipod regularly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow, and stick to JPEGS
Just returned from a two week trip to Europe and am very glad I didn't rely on Belkin Media Reader exclusively.Don't even think of trying this with anything larger than a 512mb card, and even then, it will drain your entire battery right in front of your eyes. The issue for me, however, was that I would occassionally get error messages stating "card read error, download aborted," or something to that effect. It would happen about 1/3 of the time, and in the middle of the upload (i.e., the first 30 pictures would go fine, then it would hang up at the same point each time). My guess is that I occassional used my Canon S500 to take small mpeg videos, and the Belkin reader couldn't handle those. If you have relatively small cards and stick to jpegs, you should be OK.Now, incidentally, the battery life of on my 4G ipod is only about 8 hours vs. the 12 hours advertised.Good idea, but not ready for prime time yet.Glad I was able to back up to CDs at Italian photo stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it Says and Says what it Does
    Quick Recap:
-This device is not as fast as a USB 2.0 reader to a computer.
-This device DOES let you transfer almost any file from number of media cards to your IPod.

An IPod is not a long term storage solution for digital photos or other files. It does, however, do a great job of providing a short-term storage solution for times when you don't want to lug around a computer or can't rely on access to one.Ideal for trips and other times when you might need quick access to more storage (taking photos at an event, etc).

Altogether a great idea.It isn't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. ... Read more
