5-0 out of 5 stars Specs Schmecs
There seems to be plenty of hyperbole over the specs of this camera vs. the nikon d70. very few of the specifications are so far apart that it makes a huge difference. I guarantee that a professional photographer could figure out how to get the most out both cameras.
Most people i've spoken with that have this camera are upgrading from point and shoots or SLR style cameras from sony, nikon, olympus, canon, etc. This is not a point 'n' shoot inspite of the novice settings on the dial.
Just because you pay $1400 for a camera doesn't mean it will convert your snapshots into artwork. If you're into taking candid shots of your kids goofing off or your wife snoring with her mouth open, or granny's dentures falling out, Stick with a point 'n' shoot. But if you want to develop the art and craft of photography, that takes patient work and time.
Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Pentax, etc. It doesn't matter. Camera's don't make pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel XT?Nikon D70?20D?
I spent a lot of time deciding on my first digital camera so here's a review that imparts some of what I learned.First off, Canon is a small notch up from Nikon. They're chess players; Nikon releases first, Canon responds with something slightly better. If you've always used Nikon, just stick with the Nikon. My friend uses the D70 professionally; she loves it.Real solid camera.I went with Canon because it's what I'm used to 35mm-wise.The Digital Rebel was highly appealing to me given it's price, so I went into a store to hold it.This was the turning point for me.The Digital Rebel and Digital Rebel XT are way too small and light. They're basically oversized point-and-shoots.This is great for some people, but for someone looking for a professional-grade digital SLR, you're going to want something more substantial than plastic. After rejecting the Rebel, I tried out the 20D.It was perfect. The 20D is made from a magnesium alloy, making it slightly heavier than the Rebel, but much sturdier.Pixel-wise, 6.3 or 8.2 doesn't make a difference unless your trying to make posters.Features do matter, though, and the 20D is packed with them. It's easy to use right out of the box, but if you're into advanced features, you can play with new stuff on the 20D for months. The Digital Rebel XT has got less than half the features of the 20D.Basically, the 20D is just much more versatile for a photographer interested in developing their craft. If you go with the Rebel, please purchase black. The silver plastic makes me cringe. Also, purchase a battery grip for whatever camera you get.Battery grip=clutch, no pun intended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best affordable digital SLR camera
I upgraded from a digital rebel to the 20D. I am an aviation photographer and need the speed that this camera provides with a 5fps shutter and 26 image buffer (large jpg). I was very satisfied with the battery life of my digital rebel, but the 20D does even better with up to 700 images per charge with the BP-511A battery. For a backup, I can still use the BP-511s from my rebel.

I have not experienced any lockups or Err99 messages, just outstsanding photographs using Canon L lenses. The camera also works well with my Canon 550EX flash. I'm the type of guy who only reads a manual as a last resort. I haven't needed it with the 20D. Eveything is intuitive and easy to find.

If you are looking for a professional grade camera that will produce photographs that you can be proud of, buy the 20D. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An essential for me
I use this with my EOS-20D all the time, it's also a prerequisite if you want to use the hand strap which makes the whole thing hang together better for me. I'm using a Sigma 80-400EX OS too, which is a heavy lens, and I haven't got any fit problems. Down side? It's an expensive way of getting two batteries, a couple of switches and a better grip. It's great that the grip includes a little pocket for the removed battery compartment door, otherwise I'd have lost it by now. If it wasn't for the cost I'd give this four stars, Canon certainly know how to sock it to you on the inexpensive add-ons.

4-0 out of 5 stars It does what it should.
Some of the top-listed reviews for this accessory had me concerned I might be getting a lemon with this purchase, but I've been regularly using my battery grip now for about a month and a half and have not encountered any problems with it whatsoever. The attachment is tight, properly aligned, and for all practical purposes fits so well that it's essentially one with the camera body.No power interruptions here.

A note about buying this however: the 20D camera comes with a charger that can only charge one battery at a time.Since this grip uses two batteries you won't be able to charge both batteries overnight unless you get a second charger or the model that allows you to plug two batteries at once.

Excellent, excellent product and a VERY useful addition to the 20D package. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This was my first L lens and I am very pleased; zero buyer's regret for me.

When I first started to seriously consider buying one of the 70-200mm lenses I wasn't sure which to buy.I first thought about buying the f/4 version because it was cheaper but then found out the f/2.8 comes with a case (~ $40), tripod ring (~ $120), and a hood (~ $35) in addition to the extra stop in aperture. For the $600 difference it reduces down by about $200 by including additional stuff that you, frankly, should have.

Most notably is the tripod ring which takes the lens weight off the camera body but also balances the camera at the tripod mount. With the f/2.8 attached to my 300D it balances just fine on the tripod foot (even with a EX550 flash). In shooting with a tripod it's very easy to rotate the lens within the ring to go from landscape to portrait without off-balancing the weight.

The extra weight is an issue depending on your muscular build.I can shoot for a couple hours without the weight being bothersome but my fiancee (very petite) has some difficulties. In actual shooting I find the tripod ring comes in handy to put the weight on my palm thus leaving my fingers free to adjust zoom and focus without a hassle while providing a firmer base for stability.

I cannot comment on the f/2.8 IS version since I've never used it but I have seen people selling their f/2.8 IS because it was too heavy.

All-in-all this is an extremely good lens and you get exactly what you pay for: quality. Some day I intend on complementing this lens with the 24-70 f/2.8L for wider angle shots.Of course, if you have the chance to test all three versions of the 70-200mm lens at a store then you certainly should test them for yourself. And, by all means, buy a UV/protector lens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for serious and active photographers
I bought this lens in January of 2003 after much recommendation. For what I had been shooting (college basketball) the 70-200mm f/2.8L was the most commonly seen lens aside from the 300mm f/2.8L.The fstop of 2.8 along with the zoom were the initial factors that drew me to buying it.

I first shot with it on January 11, 2003 at the Louisville vs. Saint Louis game and I was very impressed with the results I got, much of the unsharpness I thought originally to be attributed to grain was almost completely absent with this lens using the same film I had been using. This lens has spoiled me, it will be very hard on my next lens purchase to buy anything but L glass.

Another thing I should note, this lens is built like a tank, like all L-Series lenses and 1-series bodies, it can take a beating, this is not to say you should actively knock it into things or throw it around on purpose but mine has been sandwiched between me and a basketball player falling out of bounds before. It's also not a light lens, but focusing is fast and smooth. If you plan on shooting a LOT or have professional aspirations, the lens may not make the photographer, but it can help. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Product swap by RitzCamera
Like Tushar I too ordered this battery from RitzCamera, at $69 without shipping charges, only to be shipped the BP511a which can be bought online in a number of places for $49. Appears to be a pattern of deceptive practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy BP-511 From RitzCamera
I bought these batteries from RitzCamera.com, via Amazon, or at least I thought I did. Ritz actually sent me the BP-511A batteries. For these, I ended up paying $69+$6.95=$75.95. But, amazon sells the same for $49 with free shipping.

RitzCamera is indulging in deceptive marketing and cannibalizing amazon's sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Sold out so quick and sold out everywhere, wait for a month to get mine. I like the build in diffuser and everything else just great. Very good quality too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck. Save $ off canon flashes
Over the past 15 years, i've had the whole gamut of inexpensive vivitar/sunpak thristor flashes to pro level quantum qflash 400w/s packs and this flash is the best bang for the buck. I love my new canon 580ex, but it's twice the cost of this flash. I found myself using this flash the most (after I converted the door by drilling a small hole) for the quantum cable and quantum 1+1 battery pack.

I did have a problem of the flash plastic lens turning black and having to replace it. But I was using it as a primary flash for weddings on the digital rebel. It did say not to repeatedly flash the unit...ahahha...my fault. seriously though, the flash is a good flash. bounce and diffuser panel work well.

Slower in recycling than the 550 or 580 EX. So if you need faster recycling, get the canon brands (for twice the cost) or if you're a name brand junky. get the canon brand.

oh..one last somewhat important thing. i DID notice the sigma had more problems getting my digital SLR's to focus with it's infra-red focusing beam than the canon flashes...so if you're doing a lot of indoor and very low light photography, i would say the canon flashes are a better bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great flash unit for all of my EOS cameras
One of the major attractions of this flash was that I can use it not only with my Digital Rebel, but also with my Rebel 2000 35mm camera. The performance (especially with 2500 mAH NiMH batteries) is awesome. Cycle times with freshly charged batteries are about 2 seconds. Lots more features than the Canon 420EX. The only negative is the instruction manual; the translation (from Japanese) to English is poor, and the descriptions of some of the modes are rather vague. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb for the money
This lens is superb for the money - nothing cheaper - not even 3rd party.Nevertheless there are some problems - focus isn't always great/fast, and manual focus ring is ackward.Build quality isnt that great and it is a little "loose" but it doesn't bother me much.Great back up lens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very sharp, very cheap
Pros: very sharp, very cheap, excellent picture quality outdoors, light. The sharpest and best value for money among Canon prime lenses. If you are looking for softly pleasing pictures, this is not the one.

Cons: not ideal on a DSLR in cramped spaces, plastic (strong enough for careful users, but not to be used by clumsy people)

Best Use: Photojournalism, environmental portraits. Landscape if you have space.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have...
I bought this lens for my EOS 20D. The image quality is just excellent, on par with lenses way more expensive. With my 20D, the 1.6 crop factor makes it an 80mm f/1.8 lens, which is perfect for portraits. Very recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the fastest, but definitely the most reliable...
I bought this card about 6 months ago, and so far I've been overjoyed with its reliability and performance... I've taken it on vacation overseas, and it's taken a good pounding as well as having been exposed to excessive heat (Arizona summer), and excessive moisture (Scandinavian summer).

I have a couple of other regular Sandisk cards, which I'm also very pleased with, although they're very slow. This card was a very pleasant improvement over the regular SanDisk cards with regards to speed. There's even a kinda chic look to it in my mind. The card is reasonably fast, although not impressively fast. It should do well for most users though.

I've so far taken several thousand pictures with it, with my Canon Powershot S200 and my Canon PowerShot G5 camera. Not even once have I had an image corruption or any other type of problem. It always comes through for me. I also have several friends that have used this card, there among one professional photographer. None of them have ever had any problems either, and they all swear by Sandisk cards for one simple reason - they are the most reliable CF cards around.

Pros:
* Durable and EXTREMELY reliable
* Good capacity

Cons:
* Not all that fast - I'd say middle of the road. It seems to be about 2-3 times faster than a regular Sandisk card though.

I mean - what good is it if you've got the fastest card in the world, but you keep losing pictures? That won't happen with this card.

Based on that, I would highly recommend this product (and any other Sandisk CF card for that matter).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Performance, Fantastic Price
I recently purchased this card to complement a new Canon Digital Rebel dSLR camera.I have never had the opportunity to use CF cards in the past, so this review may not relate to seasoned users.Still, my impression is that this card is quite fast and is a bargain this speed/capacity.

The new Ultra IIs have just been released and might be worth the upgrade, but my camera buffers just fine and I can shoot in single-shot mode with *very* little lag between shots.I've purchased SanDisk's CF I/II card reader to complement and this is an amatuer photographer's dream setup.By the way, my camera says it can take 157 shots with this card at the Fine JPEG/largest size.Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars slow, slow, slow
These are the slowest cards I have.On my Dimage 7Hi, to write 8 rapid shots to file, it takes:

On my Lexar 32x card:27 seconds

On my Viking 256 card: 34 seconds

On my Sandisk 512 card: 45 seconds

Thats quite a difference if you want to take rapid photos. On a single shot basis, my camera has a big enough buffer that I do not notice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good camera bag . . .
Tamrac's 5606 camera bag is well constructed, sturdy and versatile, and is suitable for use with either film or digital SLR cameras. It is a mid-sized bag, designed to carry up to two camera bodies. The crucial issue with this type of bag, is whether it has adequate space to carry exactly what you need, including lenses and larger accessories like flash units and battery packs.Check Tamrac's website, and look at the diagrams showing the interior compartments of the bag, and how components may be stored, and judge if there's enough space for the particular gear you have.

The interior of the bag can be divided into up to six smaller compartments. The layout is designed to accept a body with a zoom lens up to around 8 inches in length attached. While a camera with a long lens will fit in the bag, you'll have arrange things carefully if you want to carry too much else. Also this setup does not work well if you have a battery grip attached. One solution is to store the camera and grip with no lens attached.Doing this, there is more than adequate space for the body, and three or four lens, and a flash unit.Stored vertically, a long lens can be accommodated with no problem.Carrying your gear this way, you're not immediately prepared to shoot, as you must take a few moments to assemble the camera.

Though the bag is really better suited to accommodating the gear to fully outfit one camera. In a pinch, the 5606 can accommodate two camera bodies, even with battery packs, but that will leave just about a third of the available space for lenses and a flash.

There is a zippered fold down compartment with pockets in the front. It would be nice if the pockets had some kind of fasteners.Pouches with velco fasteners are on the side of the bag.Velcro is an extremely poor design choice. One should not risk putting valuable or heavy items into these pouches. They could easily be lost, or fall out and be broken, should the fasteners fail to hold. This wasted storage space is the bag's major flaw. Some type of modification would be required to make them truly useful.

The 5606 has an excellent heavy duty carrying strap, and also has straps at the base for carrying a tripod.A semi useful feature is a wallet for carrying digital media and other small accessories. The wallet is attached to the bag with an elastic strip, and sides into a compartment on the side of the bag.The padding in bottom and sides could stand to be a bit thicker, but that can be said of most bags.

As with any camera bag, it's ultimate usefulness depends on the user, and the particular gear to be carried. The 5606 isn't quite perfect in all situations, but it is adaptable enough to be useful most of the time.Available in several colors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bag for a pro and the daily amateur
When I went camera bag shopping, I was looking for a bag that would not only hold all my SLR gear, but also my backup camera and accessories. This bag does all that and beyond.I can carry 2 bodies and 3 lenses with this bag, 28-200, 70-300 and a macro lens, my flash with wireless transmitter, a thin minolta 150 point and shoot camera, my swiss tool, and filters with plenty of room left over. The easy access front pouch is great for film if you are shooting the kids and don't want to miss a shot by having to dig through the bag to find the film. Why look? The film can be placed in the convenient front flap pouch.I use the side pouches to store my cleaning cloths, extra batteries and a photo pen that I carry around.

With the system 6, 2 things come to mind that are key in all camera bags: 1.) lots of space and 2.) secured travel and protection. With the spacious storage capacity of such a versatile bag, a novice to a pro cannot go wrong with this bag.A must for photographers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bag and great price
I did a lot of shopping before I purchased this camera bag. I went to the manufactures web sites and found Tamracs to be the easiest to negotiate and also the most helpful. That told me a little something about the product. When I received my bag I was very impressed with the quality of material and workmanship. There is ample space for my camera, at least five lenses including a telephoto zoom and a flash in the main compartment. There are plenty of side pockets for film, filters and extra goodies. If I have any complaints it would be with the dividers in the main compartment. The Velco system is a little awkward to adjust but I think this is typical for most camera bags. Overall I am very happy with the Tamrac system 6 camera bag and I would't hesitate to purchase other products from Tamrac. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent product at a great price
Many people have said that they had trouble with the drivers on this device and my experience was a little more troubled than I had hoped, but since I haven't seen anyone tell people actually how to do the install, I thought I would. This is my experience with what works in Windows XP SP2

1. Install the device and insert a CF card.
2. Windows will say that the drivers aren't compatible with this operating system.
3. Go to the device manager and find the device, it should have an exclamation point over its icon.
4. Double click on the device and click reinstall driver.
5. I clicked 'Yes, this time only' for connecting to Windows Update, although I don't think this step matters.
6. Click 'Install the software automatically' and click Next.
7. Windows will look and eventually find the correct drivers.

This method worked for me, but I'm not sure how it will work for anyone else. I don't know why Windows didn't find the drivers when you attach the device, but it didn't for me.

The only other problem with this device is that when you insert a CF card the card is flush with the device and with your laptop and this makes it difficult to remove the CF card without ejecting the entire device. However, the up side of this is that there is nothing to stick out and get caught when traveling with your laptop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plug and Play on the Mac
I just plugged it in and it simply worked -- both on my PowerBook 1400 running OS 8.6 (which exploits it as an extended memory hack) and on my Titanium PowerBook running OS 9 and OS X. I have iPhoto set NOT to launch when the card is inserted on the TiBook.

I gave 4 stars because it arrived quickly and did the job as advertised with no hassles. (To merit 5 stars, it should have had better documentation and a more detailed troubleshooting guide).

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems
I use this product to move pictures from my camera to my computer. My primary purpose was to save my battery since it requires my camera to be on when downloading shots and I have a 256MB Compact Flash card.

Not only does it save my battery power by allowing me to put the CF card into my computer, but it downloads very quickly.I have had no problems with the unit and received the adapter from Viking earlier than I expected. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Epson products need work
I have almost always bought Epson printers for use with my Mac because I felt that the quality of the prints were great when the printer worked properly. The problems are unfortunately, numerous.First and formost with the 960 is the fact that local stores do not carry ink cartridges for it and when the printer runs out of ink, it won't print. In this regard, Epson forces you to keep a big stock of cartridges so you don't get stuck. This is problematic when all you want to print is a fax that uses only black ink but because your Light Cyan cartridge is out you can't print anything. The cartridges are insanely expensive as well and they don't last long.I might add that printing on CDs and DVDs is a hit and miss affair.Registration is haphazard. And try printing on the silver printable discs.Impossible.The ink just bleeds. And the ink sometimes "wrinkles up" on the white printable discs when it dries.Epson just doesn't have the bugs worked out on this one. Also, the printer drivers don't get updated soon enough to keep up with Macintosh OS upgrades.Epson software also often conflicts with just about everything from scanners to Photoshop to MS Word. After reading other people's comments on Epson products, I'm considering moving to another brand of printer.Epson printers are just too high maintenence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome photo printer
I bought this printer when I started doing digital photography artwork. The quality is EXCELLENT, absolutely stunning.I am ecstatic with the quality!I've had this printer for over a year and have had no problems at all.The replacement ink is not available at my local stores, so you'll have to order online. That's the only downside I can think of with this great printer.Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Epson printer
This is a printer that I would avoid. I was very disappointed in the print quality of this printer. There were vertical lines in the printout and overall print quality was poor..I triedall of the maintenance techniques recommended, but the printout was still very poor. This seems to be a problem with many Epson printers.I returned the Epson, bought a Canon and am very pleased with the results. ...
