4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
Not bad, you can use it as hunting gadget, or if you are on a searching crew this will come in handy. Slip it into your eyes and your sight will increase greatly. Not bad for the price although it could be better. If you are an expert in hunting, or your out looking for something this is not the best option, but one of the bests. If you just like to go around able to see on dark this is more than enough. Hope you found this helpfull.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit older model, not latest generation, but still ok.
This is an older, Russian-Made version of the US Military version. It is higher quality first generation night vision, but lacks the clarity of the new 2nd and 3rd generation units, but for it's price, is NOT a bad deal at all. For 3rd generation, be prepared to fork out 10 times this price.
I also suggest placing a piece of black electrical tape or something similar over the ir source since it is red and can be seen for some distance, and get the ramsey kit IR-1 which can be found here on Amazon. It requires a small 12 volt source, but be creative, I use one of those fanypack 12 volt kits that will power the IR-1 for a long time, and used 2-way adhesive squares to attach it to the IR Goggles frame. It is like having a huge invisible (to the naked eye), spotlight, and increases the range and visibility over 100 times than the internal visible light source.

Hope this helps.

If only they had the cool green glow of the three dots. These look a lot like the goggle that Sam Fischer uses in the Xbox game "Splinter Cell", which is also very good btw.

They work very well and will last you a long time. While a bit pricey, they're worth it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Never get lost again when you use the versatile and powerful GPS V Deluxe from Garmin. This compact global positioning system (GPS) receiver can be mounted in your vehicle and used as a handheld navigator. The GPS V Deluxe coordinates signals from 12 satellites to pinpoint your position anywhere on the globe, and has WAAS capability. The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is a system of satellites and ground stations that provides GPS signal corrections, giving you up to five times better position accuracy than just the GPS signal. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time.

The Garmin GPS V can be dash mounted...
With 19 MB of built-in memory, the GPS V Deluxe can store dozens of maps and routes in memory. Download data from your PC with the included serial cable. The GPS V Deluxe stores 50 routes with 254 waypoints each, and 3,000 tracklog points.

The included MapSource City Select CD-ROM--designed specifically for the GPS V--has been enhanced to provide street-level views of millions of new streets for nearly every town in the United States. City Select includes highways, interstates, business and residential streets with attributes such as turn restrictions and speed categories, and other navigation features. The software automatically creates point-to-point routes in MapSource and on the GPS V. It also displays restaurants, hotels, attractions, entertainment, shopping, and location of emergency services along your route. City Select also contains detailed maps of major metropolitan areas in seven defined regions in the U.S. and Canada.

Or, carry it in the palm of your hand!
This Deluxe version of the Garmin GPS V offers full unlock capability of all maps for the United States and Canada. (The regular Garmin GPS V comes with unlock capability for just one region.) Simply install the City Select CD-ROM on your PC, then enter a custom code that is included with the product box.

The GPS V Deluxe comes with auto-routing for the shortest and fastest way to your destination, plus turn-by-turn directions throughout North America and major cities. The GPS V Deluxe will show you how to get there and give you an estimated time of arrival, then alert you to upcoming turns with an audible beep.

You view data on the 2.2-by-1.5-inch four-level grayscale LCD, with its resolution of 256 x 160 pixels. A multilevel backlight allows you to see the screen clearly in a variety of lighting conditions.

The GPS V comes with detachable antenna, PC interface cable, dashboard mount, 12-volt adapter cable, wrist strap, and owner's manual. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Get upcoming services information as you travel along your route.
As you approach a turn, the map page automatically changes to show a focused view of the upcoming turn.
As you're navigating a route, you can view a list of upcoming turns along with the remaining distance and time.
A built-in calendar shows you the best times to hunt and fish based on location and time of year.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong with Garmin...
My husband and I have several versions of this product, as it has evolved through the years. It is a very good GPS unit.At work, we often have to use a fancy $5000 professional Trimble model. Many times I have not been able to get a good enough signal and have had to use my personal Garmin instead.I don't know why a product that costs less than 1/10th of the price works better, but it often does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simple tech problem, no customer service=expensive trash
I have what is probably a simple tech issue getting my software to talk to my device.Reinstall doesn't work, and the vague suggestions on the websight don't help. They are impossible to get a hold of for help, and I am about 1 day from giving up and attempting a return.

The phone (business hours only) is almost always busy. The two times I got an answer there was a wait of 40 minutes.THe first time I had to go back to work before they got to me.I am still waiting on my second connection. The other 40 tries got busy signals (I have memorize their number though).

Meanwhile the email off the websight won't take my product's serial number. It has no failsafe device, and I don't think they are actually getting my email. If they are, they simply haven't answered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best of First Generation GPS Units
The Garmin V's strong feature set and ease of use make this my first choice of first generation GPS units.Although the single four-way directional pad is way more frustrating to use than would be four separate buttons, it is very compact while sporting a large 320 x 240 screen.Color would be nice, but it truly is not necessary.

It is very good for using on streets as well as the back country.Finding your destination is easy with its comprehensive searchable database of addresses and points of interest, and with its fine turn-by-turn navigation assistance. But park your vehicle at a trail head and the unit becomes a terrific tool for exploring and enjoying the great outdoors.

However, first generation GPS's such as the Garmin V have their serious drawbacks.Managing and downloading detailed map sets is cumbersome due to its limited 19MB of writable memory. In metro areas, such as So. Cal., the map and address data is so cumbersome that you can only fit a very small geographic region into memory at any one time. Also, loading map data via the serial port is painfully slow and further reduces its usefulness for the regular traveler.

Current generation GPS units have two advances that greatly improve their usefulness. First, many now feature removable storage cards which allows you to hold address and map data for much, much larger geographic areas. For example, for our Garmin iQue I can fit the entire MapSource North America map set on two SD cards so I always have quick and easy access to all maps and addresses.

The second benefit of many new generation GPS units is the USB interface rather than serial.Maps sets can now be loaded into GPS units far more quickly then before making it much more convenient to keep your unit loaded with relevant map and address data.

Using MapSource detail maps is important as the default base map contained within the Garmin V is not only sparse but also woefully inaccurate. For example, Elizabeth Lake Road in Leona Valley is mislabeled the California Aqueduct, and many common rural highways are simply not there. This isn't so bad in metro areas, but in rural areas the base map is virtually useless.

Although the Garmin V is the best of the fixed memory/serial interface GPS units out there today, I recommend to those looking to purchase a GPS look to the new generation of devices that address the issues of limited memory and slow data transfer rates with expansion card slots and USB capability. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Monster Charger continues excellent reputation
I have a digital camera that I use constantly. I used to use another brand of rechargeable batteries but they needed at least 12-14 hours and I never knew if they were done recharging. What's even worse, I made a habit of carrying an extra set in my pocket because I knew that if I used the flash, it would drain them clean!

Then someone recommended Monster. I used Monster products before, specifically their phone cable for my modem (by the way, it is also an awesome product) and their video cables for my DVD player and TV (again, awesome). My initial thought was "Monster brand has already proven itself with me, could they continue batting 1.000 with their batteries?" The answer was a resounding YES!

First of all, recharging only takes about 30-40 minutes and there is even a light indicator that glows from amber to green to let you know that it's finished. Out of habit, I carried an extra pair of Monster AAs thinking that the flash will get the best of them. WRONG! I took pictures at a wedding and evening reception and was still going strong. I even shot small video without worry. Yes, I still carry an extra pair of Monster batteries in my pocket, but it is usually to show a fellow digital camera user how great they are.

The Monster brand continues to roll out awesome products. You will not regret getting anything from them, much less, their battery chargers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What it is (a good radio) and what it is not (a magic wand).
This product works very well if used in the manner in which it was designed.

Boaters, this is not a marine radio, and don't expect the Coast Guard, Sea Tow, or even other boats to be monitoring these channels. Today's marine VHF radios are small enough for even a Jet-Ski or the smallest dinghy and have appropriate waterproofing.

If you want to cover a farm, country club or large industrial or office park, spend the extra money on a proper business radio. Also, wherever possible, a vehicle-mount (truck, tractor, golf cart) radio with the right antenna will reach much farther and sound much better than anything hand-held.

Who should buy this radio? Skiers and snowboarders, bicyclists, hikers, campers, hunters, any groups of people who may tend to get separated beyond shouting range. Video production, stage and ligthting crews who can find this a low-cost, easy-to-use substitute for Clear-Com systems. Obviously they will need to use headsets to keep the sound from getting into the audience or audio track, and those who need to keep their hands free, like video camera operators will prefer the VOX headset. It would have been nice if they sold these as a package, which would be cheaper than buying them separately.

This type of signal is by nature for line-of-sight transmission only, and not like CB, and will not go around large mountains or "skip" like lower-frequency radio signals.

This radio is built ruggedly with the kind of quality we got familiar with on the older, bulkier Talkabouts. As for the menus, I would suggest you keep the manual close at hand until you get the hang of navigating though the commands. I like the pushbutton-release belt clips.

I bought the NiCd version of these radios, which Amazon also sells, and it came with a handy charging stand and works well as long as you remember to charge it up before using.:-)Those of you who choose the AA-powered version would be well-advised to get a nice set of NiMH batteries and charger, even though Amazon has great prices on alkaline batteries.

Overall, this radio is very worthwhile and satisfactory.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as powerful as older FRS models!
Having been a fan of Motorola FRS walkie-Talkies for years, I was looking forward to the extra power of the GMRS models. The Motorola T5720 was a major disapointment!I made a few range tests and found that the T5720 was not nearly as effective as my old Motorola T289 FRS radio - much less range, more noise, poor audio quality.Don't buy this product!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Decent radio
This is my first radio, I bought it last week. Used it over the long weekend in Lake George, NY. It was really useful to talk to my friend to find parking or ordering food. As cell phone coverages was not good as you go 3 to 4 mile north from village, this radio helped us a lot. I bought a AA battery model because I have bunch of NiMH (not NiCd) rechargable batteries (used for my digital camera). NiMH is FAR Superior than NiCd batteries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These batteries really work!
Firstly, you should note that I have the earlier 250 watt version of this powerpack (very similar, but without the compressor).

I am buying a 2nd 300 watt version because my experience has been so good with my first one.Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had no charging problems and it has held the charge for the past several years without fail (comforting green light). The real test came during the big NYC blackout-- I was the only one with any lights on!Worked like a champ. As I said, I'm buying another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great item
I bought one of these last year in a store and it worked great. Now i bought one again on here at a cheaper price. I use it in the yard to replace a long and tangled power cord to weedwack, to trim my bushes, and light an area at night for 15 -20 mins with a 300 watt light. The little LED lights are great for keeping me informed of the battery status.I filled my bike and car tires with it. I use it alot to go camping and i recharge it ever time im in the car going place to place. And this winter i have jump started 2 cars and one pickup of my coworks so far on the cold nights i leave work. I keep one at home and the other in my SUV and i will say it has payed itself off with the number of times it has come in handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I use it all the time!
This product is great! I have used it now for over 6 months and have been very impressed. I've even given two of these away as gifts!

I've used this Xantrex 300 watt generator and it has helped me in numerous situations:

My car battery died. I used this to jumpstart my car.

My car's tire has a slow leak. I used the air compressor function to re-inflate it. It takes a long time to inflate tires, compared to those 50 cent air/water machines at the gas stations, but it gets the job done and I can take it with me. It works on my Acura's 15 inch tires, as well as my friend's Dodge Ram (30+) inch tires.(It also has a needle to inflate sports balls, which I haven't used yet.)

My Shed has no electricity. I use the attached double lamp florescent light and I can see. (Not super bright, but it helps.)

It's primary use, however is for my laptop. I constantly plug in my laptop (Dell inspiron 8600) while in my car. I get power for 2-3 hours. A better strategy to maximize laptop use is: I use my laptop with it's long lasting Centrino battery (last's 4-5 hours). I then shut it down and recharge for 1 to 1 1/2 hours with the Xantrex 300w unit, as it has a standard outlet that I can plug into. I can then use my laptop for another 4-5 hours. Shut it down and recharge it again, etc. etc... Doing this, I can recharge my laptop battery a total of 2-3 times before the Xantrex unit needs to be recharged, and thus I can use my laptop for a total of up to 20 hours!

In response to some other reviews: They do take about 48 hours to charge fully, but you can leave it plugged in and it will automatically maintain it's full charge. I've seen it fully charged, which turns the charging indicator light green. Then I noticed a few hours later that the light was amber again, indicating it was 'maintaining' the charge to keep it full. If I had not previously noticed that the charge indicator was green (full), I too would have drawn the conclusion that it 'took longer than it was supposed to' to charge. But that is not the case.

I've also seen these things sit out in the rain for days and days and still work properly. Although I do not recommend allowing them to get wet, I do think its an attribution to their quality of workmanship. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Works fine -- until it stops working
I bought two of these hoping to save some energy. After five months, one radio would work using only the ac adaptor.Nothing would happen if I cranked it or put it in the sun.Since it was still under warranty, I sent it back to Freeplay. They never answered. The second radio lasted fifteen months....

4-0 out of 5 stars Freeplay FPR2S-M Black Hand-Cranked Solar Radio
Freeplay FPR2S-M Black Hand-Cranked Solar Radio is a surprisingly good value. The sound quality and reception far exceeded my expectations. It is a little bulky so that makes it a little clumsy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Radio for camping and power outages
I like these radios a lot. I gave out a slightly different model, the 360s, as presents last Christmas. It was the hit present. The differenceis the 360s doesn't have a handle and the spring is slightly smaller so itlasts maybe 20 minutes instead of the 30/40 that this one does. This makesthe case slightly smaller. The speaker is also smaller but the soundquality is still good.

Radio reception is great. It uses the same basicradio components that are in all modern radios. The antenna is replaceableif you accidently bend it. It looks like a standard part which would beavailable from radio shack or similiar store. (It unscrews from theoutside, which is good, as you don't ever want to open one of these springwound gizmos.)

If you place it in direct sunlight, the solar panel seemsto generate enough electricty that you don't have to wind it. On a cloudyday it seems to need an occasional wind.

These radios have come a longway since they first started manufacturing them in '95. They are made inSouth Africa by people who are disabled in some way so you can feel goodthat you are supporting a worthy cause. Freeplay originally designed theseradios to be operated in the bush country where no one has power andbatteries are few and expensive. The U.N. disaster relief also is supposedto hand these radios out to people in areas where the power has beendistroyed.

The only reason I'm awarding 4 stars instead of 5, is that themechanism for the spring is under such tension that the plastic wheelholding the spring inside rubs against the wheel which stores the spring, when it is unwinding. After a number of windings this little bit of plastichas worn away and the sound of grating plastic is gone. I've got a clearone and can see that this extra bit of missing plastic in no way harms themechanism. It looks like they just need a slightly larger clearancebetween these two wheels, or a slightly stiffer bearing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I only wish it had more detail...
I find that reading Tom Brown books can be quite aggravating. He goes into a lot of spiritual mumbo jumbo and does not lay things out in a clear and sophisticated way. Also, the diagrams in his books are quite awful. His plant guides are a good start, but they have no good pictures and can be outdone by most other plant books. This is a good book to check out and read a bit to introduce yourself to concepts, but you should go to his school or find a teacher to really learn the stuff.I respect Tom Brown and I believe he is the leader of the "new" tracking society, but I just wish his guides weren't so pathetic.I really like John Young's instructions, he seems like a clearer speaker and educator.Tom Brown's books aren't quite that good, but he has built a fairly extensive base of books for the beginner to start the journey of tracking. The worst example of his instructions are on how to cook water; he seems to recommend killing a deer for its stomach.Just use a flippin' cookpot, man!And also ignore the part about making bows in this books, the Bowyers Bible series is the definitive source for that knowledge. If you just want a bunch of old man stories, by all means get this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Place to begin
This book can serve as a starting point to help learn about the essentials to survive with nature.
It is a realistic approach, with real skills.
Lots of ideas of ways to secure fire, shelter, water and food using your own wits and skills. I use it as reference.
Learning about the skills and knowledge is the first step before going out and doing it!

5-0 out of 5 stars World's greatest lantern
I bought the Coleman battery lantern before we went on a camping trip with my 6 year old daughter and her Y-Princess tribe. I liked the idea of a battery-powered lantern, as opposed to a propane or liquid fuel lantern, around little kids.

It turns out that the Coleman battery lantern is the best lantern I've ever used. Most importantly, it throws a ton of bright white light - this is "hang the lantern on a tree branch and have enough light to pitch the tent, build the fire, cook dinner, etc" kind of light. In addition, the Coleman battery lantern lasts a lot longer than I expected on a set of batteries, turns right on, is easy to find in the dark (when you leave the night light feature on), is easy to carry... I could go on and on.

Sure, 8 D cell batteries are expensive, but that's the only down side I can see. The benefits mentioned above, plus the huge benefit of safety around the kids, more than makes up for the additional expense, at least in my book. ... Read more
