4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Entry Level Scope
Solid feeling unit. Battery compartment could be designed better. Buttons for power and IR are mounted in a silly spot, so using them takes two hands. Use of double AAs makes a lot of sense and they seem to last.
These units work well in most conditions. Getting proper focus takes a bit of time, but I found that I could focus closer than specs indicated, from about 4 feet to infinity. On the water on a dark night in Long Island I was able to see boats and moorings. There is some image distortion at the edges and a bit of "dirt" in the view, but overall the Night Owl will impress, especially at the price. Note the IR illuminator is not invisible to others. Red dot is visible! These things are great for sailing.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I bought this for my husband. We waited until dark and then tried it out. He stood outside about 10 feet from me and I looked at him through the scope. I could make out a bright figure in his shape but could not see any features. Peripheral objects had slightly better clarity. I'll wait until the technology gets better for the home consumer and buy again. This one is going back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Night Vision
Compact size and quality! Like the other users on this page, I was surprised by the power of this unit. Totally worth the the price , which was very reasonable ....Night vision feature, plus
built in IR feature present an excellent value. And it's powered
    by 2 AA batteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars my one beef with pioneer...
the "gray bars" that appear on the sides of a standard (square) TV image. Like when a movie is in widescreen, there are BLACK bars on the top and bottom, making the picture ever more viewable. Well, for a widescreen TV, a standard image has those sides to fill, so pioneer decided to have LIGHT GRAY bars which, in theory, make your TV last longer because the projector burns evenly. But this is lame because no matter what projector you buy, your going to have to replace the bulb in 5-7 yrs anyway. I would've gone with a plasma, but if you've ever seen an in-store display with plasma TV's (running all day for a few months), it becomes obvious that plasmas burn out even faster than projectors. Still, there is nothing like watching a movie on my pioneer. It is one of the best ones that you can buy, the image proves that. So, I do love it and opted for the pioneer above a 40" Sony Wega. But, if your going to watch TAPES or play GAMES, get a picture tube that will last 15 yrs. I've owned my pioneer for a year now, and already had to turn up the brightness by 4 notches, which does make black colors suffer. I estimate this TV will last me 5 yrs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitsubishi, Sony? Don't make that mistake!
I have owned this TV for almost a year now and just recently added the RCA DTC100 (HDTV Reciever) to my system, WoW! You can't do better then Pioneer tv's. Recently I had a visitor to my home and he said "Why is your picture so awsome?". This person spent...more then I did on a Mitsubishi HDTV needless to say he was VERY upset. If you have the chance, BUY ONE! You will not be disapointed...I have had great success with my game console (sony) To bad Pioneer does not make one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useless for video games
I dont know why would someone buy this television. I wanted a big screen television for a new X-Box console, but you cant use video game systems on ANY projection screen tv because it will ruin it for good, and then you money will go down the tube. This is just a warning for all of you wanting to buy a projection screen tv for a video game system. DONT BUY ONE FOR THAT PURPOSE, otherwise its an ok tv. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing exciting, but a solid product nonetheless
No, this is not a sexy product. It's not a flat-screen , it doesn't have component inputs, it doesn't have front AV inputs, it only has one S-video input, it doesn't have a 3D comb-filter or an invar shadow mask. But why dwell on what it doesn't have, when it delivers such a great picture and suberb sound for under $1000?

If picture for price is your bottom line, this JVC model is the best in this price category.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great picture, but........
The picture is great (and that's my first criterion for a television) andthe 2-tuner PIP is easy to use.My only complaint about this model is theA/V inputs. There are only two and they are both on the back of the set. With a DVD, VCR and a camcorder, I come up short! It seems like once aweek I'm having to push the entertainment center away from the wall to messwith the cables! ... Read more

Philips Magnavox 9P6031C 60" Projection TV
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $1,799.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Enjoy a large, crystalline image from just about any video source with the Philips Magnavox 9P6031C. The 60-inch projection TV sports rear-panel component-video, S-video, and composite-video inputs and an onboard 181-channel NTSC tuner for off-air TV reception right out of the box. The set's picture-in-picture capability includes SmartWindow with Action Freeze, positioning, and image swap, so you can view any input as the main image and any TV station as an inset image, or vice-versa.

The set offers a 160-degree wide-angle screen and 550 foot Lamberts peak brightness. It's loaded with 7" liquid-cooled, liquid-coupled tubes, MagnaBrite lenses with Digital convergence, and a wideband video amplifier. Using a Delta 77/78 lens (an industry standard in optics), the MagnaBrite lens system achieves more consistent edge-to-edge brightness and contrast with a dramatically reduced focal length, resulting in crisp, well-defined large-screen images from a slim cabinet design (under 30 inches, front to back).

A notch filter gives you greater resolution and sharper, clearer, more detail-perfect color images. And, by extending the video bandwidth to 10 MHz, the set's wideband video amplifier gives you up to 800 lines of horizontal resolution for striking picture detail and an impressive increase in frequency response through the audio/video inputs (the lines per picture width are 650 based on EIA measurement procedures).

The stereo sound system built into this TV uses an MTS/SAP decoder, bass boost, and individual bass, treble, and balance controls for personal listening preference. There's also dbx noise reduction, which eliminates hiss and high-frequency interference. The large, 4 x 6-inch elliptical speakers are powered by 5 watts RMS per channel x 2 (into 8 ohms, from 50 to 20,000 Hz, with no more than 0.5 percent total harmonic distortion). Incredible Stereo heightens the overall entertainment experience by engulfing you in a "wall of sound" using psychoacoustic audio techniques.

The supplied universal TV/VCR/DVD/DBS/cable remote operates all features and functions of the set, granting direct menu access even activating SmartWindow PIP. The remote also controls all important features and functions of virtually all infrared-capable VCRs, DVD players, digital broadcast systems (satellite receivers), as well as toggling on/off and channel up/down on most cable converter/decoders.

When activated, SmartSound keeps volume levels constant between programs and commercials, and from one channel to another. Other convenient features include a 120-minute sleep timer, random channel access, 1-button picture reset, and status recall. SmartLock (Parental Control) lets you protect young children from harmful programming with V-chip technology based on the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the network television rating systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Projection TV for the Money
I Recently purchased the Philips Magnavox 9P6031C 60 inch TVand so far
I am very pleased with it. I purchased [this set] and saved $300-500
over comparable sets by other manufacturers. The picture is very good
and has settings for movies, sports, or for weak reception which I use
since my cable reception is not very good. I purchased a Toshiba DVD
player and using the component video output into the component video
in on the TV gives me the kind of picture I had dreamed I would
achieve. This combined with a new home theater system has turned my
new rec room into a virtual movie theater. The setup is relatively
easy and the SMART features on the menu offer several easy to access
    options....I would
recommend this set to anyone who wants a high quality set offered at a
reasonable price, and has the room to enjoy it.

    Sega Dreamcast Console
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    CD-ROM
    list price: $149.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Dreamcast system is, in a word, awesome. Fire up Soul Calibur, and instantly you'll appreciate that the graphics and gameplay are even better than in the arcade version. And Sonic Adventure, with its light-speed gameplay, is sure to wow even the most jaded gamer.

It's amazing that such a small machine (it's about the size of your mouse pad) can deliver such incredible performance. Chalk it up to superior engineering. Dreamcast's only downside is that it comes with only one controller and a demo disc. In order to truly take advantage of Dreamcast's capabilities, we recommend outfitting the controller with a Jump Pack and a Visual Memory Unit. Getting one or more extra controllers is also a good idea, because some of the best Dreamcast games support up to four players at once.

    Why it's so cool:

    • Ultramodern components: Custom-made video, audio, and processor technology blows away the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and puts Dreamcast in the same league as PS2 and XBox.
    • Integrated modem: In another video-game first, Dreamcast comes with a 56K modem. Use your regular Internet service provider and the separately sold keyboard to access e-mail, shopping, and the World Wide Web. Not only can you upload high scores, participate in chat discussions, and download updates and enhancements for your games, but, through a membership to the SegaNet Internet service provider, you can play Quake III Arena, NFL 2K1, and other games against Dreamcast owners over the Internet.
    • The Visual Memory Unit (VMU): More than just a memory card, the VMU is a miniature portable game system that fits inside a controller--so its LCD screen is easily seen by you but hidden from your opponent.
    • All-in-one entertainment: It plays games. It plays audio CDs. It connects to the Internet and lets you browse the Web or e-mail friends. Our note to the cost-conscious: If you have a Dreamcast system, you just don't need a separate CD player or a separate computer. Dreamcast does it all, and does it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sega Dreamcast is better than a Gamecube.
I love the Sega Dreamcast so much. The Dreamcast has online and a Gamecube dose not. A Dreamcast is easyer. A Gamecube is more harder. Dreamcast has more better games than Gamecube. Gamecube is just a copy of a Dreamcast. I give a Gamecube a 7.5 . I give a Sega Dreamcast a 9.5 . I wish they haven't stop making games for the Dreamcast.

The release of NHL 2K2 marks the end of the Sega Dreamcast's remarkable run. While production of the Dreamcast may be over, the legacy lives on. In the dreamcasts short lived life time 248 Dreamcast titles were released. The first console to venture into online gameplay, Dreamcast has a built-in 56K modem. With 128-bit processing, 3D audio capabilities and stellar 3D graphics, your gameplay experience just got better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performer for Many Years
When the APS system began, we purchased the Canon 370Zand it still works after several repairs. My wife is a principal and needed a small camera to fit in her purse and I needed a camera to fit in my pocket on trips. The Canon LT260 was purchased for $100 and has lasted in very heavy use for over four years without repairs. The quality of picture, strength of the flash, the 2X zoom and the ruggedness would be hard to match for the price. However, this great camera which has traveled the world and taken an average of 24-48 pictures a week finally died.Although my wife has an excellent digital camera, she wants another LT260!

3-0 out of 5 stars LOVED it! -- while it lasted...
I received my Elph as a gift in 1999.Shortly afterward I took it on vacation. It was so easy to use; I could switch film while riding a bike!I got just about to the end of the third roll of film when the "dreaded H" reared its ugly head.Following the manual's advice, I took out the battery, replaced it, and... it rewound/exposed the whole roll.Since it was under warranty, we took it to the camera shop to have it repaired. The owner told us he got this problem with Elphs a lot, and if we had this problem again, we'd be better off purchasing a new, different camera than paying to have it fixed.

While it worked, I took the best photos of my life... crisp, clear, gorgeous!
I used that camera without a problem until early this year when the "H" returned. For a while I was able to reset it.Then it started eating brand-new rolls of film.

Part of me really wants to buy another one because it took such great pictures and was so fun to use.But the practical side of me thinks it's an awful lot of money to spend on a disposable camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera - It Has Changed My Life!!
I received this camera as a gift and it is just fantastic!I have experienced the dreaded 'H' problem twice, but only during the first couple of times I changed a roll of film. I did not lose any pictures, and it has not happenend since.

I took this camera on vacation, and the pictures came out fantastic - I have also used this camera to take pictures at the beach and they come out just like postcards.

It is so small and light that I now bring it everywhere and have taken more pictures in the last year than in my entire life. The only thing that I would change is to have a bit more powerful zoom lens. I have since given this model to two friends and they enjoy it as much as I have. ... Read more

Polaroid i-zone Translucent Pocket Instant Camera, Phat Blue
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $23.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Polaroid's i-zone pocket cameras produce tiny, high-quality Polaroidpictures about the size of a frame of 35mm film (or your average postage stamp). The i-zones use either sticky or nonsticky instant film, so you can put yourpictures in a frame or stick them onto your notebook or CD player. While thecameras all have the same funky oblong plastic design, they are available in avariety of interesting color schemes. The silver edition is a solid silvery graycolor, while Phat Blue and Fireball Red are neon-like translucent monotones, andmost others are two-tone, like the Jade version, which has an aqua green frontand bluish back.

Each i-zone set comes complete with camera, instant pocket film (six shots), andtwo AA alkaline batteries--everything you need to start making pictures. Werecommend buying extra film right away, especially if the camera is a gift, because those first six shots tend to go pretty fast. Loading the camera is aseasy as dropping the film cartridge into the back of the camera and closing itback up. The trickiest part is remembering to pull the film tab out in one fluidmotion, without stopping--exactly like most other Polaroids. When you expose ashot and pull out the film, you get something that looks like a Band-Aid, withan image in the middle and extra paper on both ends. Just clip the extra paperoff with a pair of scissors and you have your final product. Be careful not tocut into the actual photo, as you don't want to give the caustic paste inside achance to seep out and get on your fingers.

There are three exposure settings on the i-zone--indoors (with flash),outdoor/sunny, and outdoor/cloudy. Overall, the camera is probably best forsubjects within 2 to 8 feet, although we took pictures of downtown buildingsthat turned out pretty well. The outdoor/sunny setting requires bright sundirectly on the subject for a good exposure. Even if it isn't cloudy, try usingthe outdoor/cloudy setting if the subject is in shadow or if it is early or latein the day when the sunlight isn't at full strength. The flash seems to workbest from about 4 to 5 feet away.

The best part is figuring out what to do with the mini photos once you'vecreated them. The options seem to be limitless, from decorating cell phones tousing them as key chains, putting them in mini frames, or making refrigeratormagnets. These cameras are affordable, simple to use, and a lot of fun.--Walt Opie ... Read more

This small camera is ideal for young children to adults. It provides the user with instant pictures.Film for the camera can be purchased with a sticky or nonsticky backing and is easily intalled into the camera. The mediocre flash adds some functionality to the fun camera. The flashy colors and design add a blast of "ah-ha" to the cameras overall appearence.Althought the film is moderately expensive in relation to regular film, the addition of the "neat effect" balance the two. With a relatively low retail price, you will be investing in a camera and a great time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun camera!
I've had my i-zone camera since they first came out, and I constantly use it (when I can afford the film, that is!). I've bought a few more for friends as gifts, and everyone seems to enjoy them. The i-zone camera is a fun thing to take small pictures with, and the sticky film is awesome!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk.
Picture quality is consistently extremely poor. Very small image. Film is over priced. Camera breaks extremely easily. Images do not scan well even on a high quality scanner. I think the product is mostly just a gimick and a fad which I hope disappears quickly. I recieved one for free as a prize in a contest at a web site. Tried it out, and I think it's completely useless. I would not even purchase as a gift for someone. Reguardless as to how much they want it except to satisfy curiosity. It will most likely end up either collecting dust or being sold at garage sales for a penny. However, if it goes out of production quickly enough maybe they'll become collectables. ... Read more

    Pioneer DV-F727 301-Disc DVD Changer
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $1,099.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Pioneer DV-F727 is not the average, run-of-the-mill multidiscchanger. Even if your audio CD and DVD collections are quite sizeable, you canstash the goods neatly inside this 301-disc capacity "media server," then callselections up with the same ease and excitement as you would by keying an entryon a jukebox. An onscreen cataloging system helps manage your inventory, with anauto update feature that scans for new disc additions.

Should your collectionreally bulk out, it's even possible to double the system's capacity by linkingtwo DV-F727s. All the while, you'll still maintain easy control over the wholekit 'n caboodle via a single, fully-featured and user-friendly remote control(supplied), or using an optional, plug-in PS/2 style computer keyboard ormouse.

One of the most elaborately featured DVD players we've everencountered, the DV-F727 also takes care of the basics quite well--deliveringpristine pictures and sound with component-video (interlace), S-Video, andcomposite-video outputs. Sound-wise, its optical and coaxial digital-audiooutputs definitely deliver the Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM stereo (up to 96 kHz,24-bit) soundtracks. The player's Burr-Brown audio digital-to-analog converterand conventional analog jacks also proved quite fine.

Handy jog-shuttle dialson both the front panel and the remote make it a pleasure to manipulate themultispeed forward and reverse trick-play options.

Customizable settings letyou vary picture parameters to taste or adjust the audio dynamic range for latenight listening--so that soft sounds such as dialogue can be heard more clearlywithout making loud sounds even louder.

Given its immense disc storagecapacity, this changer is remarkably compact--measuring about 16.5 inches wide,17 inches deep, and 7.75 high.

The holding slots are accessible, one at atime, behind a motorized opening/closing Plexiglas "hood." Of course, there'salso the option to quickly install and then remove a single disc--via thededicated 301st slot--with its operation complemented by special "single loader"access and play keys.

Entering menu text and numerical data about stockpiledtitles is reasonably easy. Information can be added using the onscreen softkeyboard in tandem with the cursor control joystick on the remote, or with theselection dial on the front panel. To speed up the process, there's also theoption of plugging in and entering text on a conventional PS/2 computerkeyboard.

Making life easier still, some music CDs now contain andautomatically stream their own album and song title info (CD Text), which thischanger will conveniently read, display, and automatically integrate into itsprogram menu memory. If implemented, DVD text information is also downloadable.(A front-panel display lights up to indicate the presence of such text on adisc.)

A couple of bummers: you must abbreviate text entries when a title orartist's name exceeds 12 characters, the max this changer's memory will storeand display. CD Text titles longer than 12 characters, while not memorized, willscroll across the LCD screen. Also take note: when a disc is playing, you can'tenter data, or add or remove other discs.

Once program data is entered intothe megachanger's memory, titles can be sorted and accessed by format (DVD orCD), disc title (alphabetically), or disc number.

Another option: you cancreate and name 20 custom files (10 DVD/Video CD and 10 CD) for automaticplayback. However, there's still no avoiding the mandatory setup menus andunskippable FBI Warning before DVD play commences.

All in all, the DV-F727represents a remarkable piece of engineering and entertainment prowess from thefolks at Pioneer.

    Pros:

    • Immense storage capacity neatly organizes your disc library
    • Easy entry of data via remote control, keyboard, or mouse
    • Fine video and audio performance
    • A host of customizable programming and performance parameters
    Cons:
    • Discs can't be exchanged or text entered while a disc is playing
    • Text entries can't exceed 12 characters
    • Menu system doesn't accommodate filing by genre or theme

4-0 out of 5 stars reliable but with a few glitches
I bought this unit to hold my entire library, which it does, but won't in a very short while! The machine has never had any malfunctions such as jammed discs and it gets a very good workout.sound and picture quality are excellent. My number one complaint is that the settings spontaneously change, indicating that the machine is plugged into a widescreen TV.I have a 4:3 TV, but all my movies are widescreen. For some aggravating reason, the player will spontaneously start showing the widescreen movie in FULL screen because it thinks the TV is a WIDE screen unit, even though i have set it numerous times to 4:3!!then i have to stop the movie and change the setting back (for the 30th time) so it will play properly.also, they could have allowed more characters for title input, but that is a minor gripe.the user interface can also be a little clumsy, but i can't complain too much about that either.I would recommend this machine even with its comparitively high price tag.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with one small problem
I have had a Pioneer carousel FV727 in a master and slave configuration for about 3-4 years now.About once a year the slave looses all of it's programming.I have to go back and enter all my DVD titles again in the second unit. They stay in there for about a year or so, and then dissapear. Please help.

3-0 out of 5 stars I love it, when it works.
I have a huge DVD collection. So I decided to buy this
DVD changer. And for about a year or so I was in heaven.
Not having to search for A DVD around the house was great.

The only problem with this changer, and most people
will not have this problem, but alot of people have.
Is it just randomly stops reading your DVD's.

So I would keep that in mind before purchasing this dvd
    changer. ... Read more

Garmin StreetPilot ColorMap Vehicle GPS Receiver (12 Channel, Map Compatible)

    Editorial Review

Garmin's StreetPilot GPS ColorMap features a large, bright color displaybut lacks a surprising number of features that are included with some of theless expensive global positioning systems that we've tested. Designed for use ina vehicle, this GPS comes with a dash mount, cigarette lighter adapter, and aserial cable for interfacing with a PC.

At 1.3 pounds and almost 7 inches wide, the GPS ColorMap isn't tiny. The reasonfor the unit's bulk is the relatively large 16-color backlit display, 1.8 incheshigh by 3.3 inches wide, that dominates the front of the device. The colorscreen serves up clear images that are much easier to interpret than thoseproduced by a grayscale display. It's much like looking at a standard roadatlas, with red interstates, gray secondary roads, and light blue riverscrisscrossing a bright yellow background. A night mode switches the yellowbackground to black, and there are several levels of brightness that make theunit legible regardless of the lighting we tested it in. Also, in our tests, the12-channel GPS receiver took a surprisingly long time to acquire satellitesignals, but once they were locked in the unit accurately tracked our movementsand never broke its lock when we passed through tunnels or heavily forestedareas.

The map database included with the device contains most of the major highwaysand all of the interstates for the entire United States as well as the moreimportant city streets in large metropolitan areas. This limits the device outof the box for use primarily for cross-country travel. However, the map databasecan be expanded via a cartridge slot in the battery compartment that acceptsseparately available 8 MB or 16 MB cartridges. Garmin sells cartridges preloadedwith detailed map information, or you can buy a blank cartridge and a MapSourceMetroGuide CD-ROM to download data from your PC to the GPS. The built-indatabase comes with information on interstate exits and labels major bodies ofwater, but MetroGuide upgrades add many more features like street-level maps forentire cities, restaurant data, and the ability to pinpoint a specific address.

Although the StreetPilot GPS ColorMap is easy to use and highly accurate, it hasseveral shortcomings that detract from its overall value. An automatic routingfeature that lets users enter a departure point and destination to getdirections would have been nice. As it is, users are forced to enter routesmanually or download them from computer software that is compatible with thisdevice. The GPS ColorMap comes with a PC interface cable but no software todownload. Most GPS devices in this price range offer pages and pages of dataderived from complex internal calculations, but this product offers only themoving-map page and a Dashboard page that serves as a basic trip computer. Forthis price, we expected more. Also of note is the unit's underwhelming 2.5-hourbattery life, which forced us to enter complex routes while the device was beingpowered by the cigarette lighter adapter. --T. Byrl Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars Great GPSR for driving anywhere!
I've had my SPIII for about two years now, during which the pricing has come down some and the package offerings have increased, so this review may not match the exact contents Amazon offers here. My unit came with a 32MB memory cartidge, the serial port connection cord, the USB programmer cord, the 12V power cord for the cigarette lighter, the "sticky" dash mount, and a MapSource CD with codes to unlock one region (the US and Canada consisted of 5-6 regions, IIRC). I have since bought the beanbag dash mount and a 128MB card and purchased the "unlock all regions" option for City Navigator--probably already included items for a new purchase in today's package. Additionally, I downloaded the "British" voice package from Garmin's website to replace the default "American" voice--the British lady's voice seems less harsh and less like a drill sergeant when giving directions!

I love this unit because it makes navigation so easy--isn't that the idea behind a GPSR? With the CityNav map information loaded into the memory card (and with 128MB it fits all of PA, DE, MD, and D.C. and good chunks of WV, OH, NY, and NJ) I am able to get turn-by-turn directions to nearly any street address. If you ask it to route you to a given destination, the unit actually tells you when a turn is coming up, e.g. "In point two miles exit right," or "In 500 feet turn left." If you are driving without a destination selected, the unit will display the cross streets by name as you approach. You can zoom the map in for street detail or zoom out to see more of the countryside. If you have a destination selected, the unit will zoom in automatically as you approach and zoom in even more for a detailed overview of approaching intersections as you near a turn.

If you are in an area for which you do not have the MapSource detail loaded, the unit still has an internal base map that contains cities, highways, interstates, and major bodies of water, so it can still route you from city to city using the major roads. This makes driving long distances cross-country feasible and you can load up the memory card with the areas you expect to spend most of your time in if you don't have enough memory for the entire route.

However, in those areas for which you do have the map detail loaded you can get turn-by-turn directions to an address or even select various destinations (restaurants, attractions, banks, shopping centers, etc.) listed by name and/or distance. The unit also displays address and phone information for those destinations, which is useful to call ahead and make reservations or check for vacancy if you're the spontaneous weekend tourist like I am.

The 16-color display is beautiful--major routes are in red, arterials in thick black, minor streets in thin black, rivers and lakes in blue, parks and golf courses in green, and the background will change at sunset or sunrise to yellow (daylight) or black (night) as appropriate (the black streets will also switch to white at night).

Please note that the map detail, which includes streets and popular destinations, is a feature of the map software, not the unit itself. Garmin seems to issue updated map software on an annual basis, but you must pay for those updates. I'm still using CityNav 4.1, although Garmin's website states that 6.0 is coming out this summer. The new 6.0 software will probably contain more business listings and reflect more recent road construction, but I'm doing fine with 4.1 and don't see a need yet to pay for the upgrade. One reviewer complained about the lack of Starbucks locations with his map, and I expect Garmin will be adding more and more types of businesses like that as time goes by.

Enough babbling--in summary, here are some pros of this unit:
o Cheaper than most in-dash GPS systems
o Portable, so you can share the unit with your "fleet" or take it along in a rental car (and you'd best hide it or take it with you when parking so it doesn't get stolen)
o Voice navigation, so you can anticipate an upcoming turn without having to take your eyes off the road
o Color display--so much better than a gray scale map!
o Accurate and helpful when driving somewhere unfamiliar
o Automatic route recalculation if you miss a turn or have to detour
o Address and phone info for listed businesses/sites so you can call ahead

    And the cons I've experienced:
o Voice navigation could be somewhat improved for confusing intersections--do I take a right or sharp right at this five-way?
o Eats batteries--but this unit is too bulky to walk around with, so there is no reason it should ever be used without being plugged into your cigarette lighter.
o Awkward interface--entering street names or address numbers is awkward with the rocker button
o Loses signal in built-up areas with tall buildings--usually when you are downtown and *really* need directions the most, unfortunately! However, this is a problem with all GPS receivers and due more to the nature of the GPS system than the unit itself.

All in all, I love my SPIII. It has all the features I really need. There are units out there that are newer, have more features, and may be easier to use, but they're also more expensive. As long as Garmin keeps releasing updated map software compatible with the SPIII, this unit should serve my needs for many more years.

4-0 out of 5 stars StreetPilot III Review
Pro's:Overall good unit.Great color, well built, very detailed.

Con's:I live in a new development and my home street is not on the map.Software updates to the unit must be done with a serial port (included in box). The problem is that my new laptop does not have a connector for the included cable.Had to spend an additional $13 on a USB to 9 pin serial cable and Garmin said its only a 80% success rate that it will transfer the neccessary data. The Mapsource CD's which contain detailed information on cities can only be used one time.In order to use the CD's initially, you have to go to the Garmin website and get an "unlock" code. Therefore, if you purchase a newer computer, you have already used your unlock code and would have to purchase an addition code and these can range from $80-$100.
Since installing the Mapsource data, my comp has crashed 3 times.I do not think it likes Win XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but a VERY worthwile investment!
Please allow me to preface this review with the fact that I have absolutely no sense of direction. For those with excellent sense of direction, this may seem like an extravagant purchase until they come down in cost.
I had to travel to California recently (I only lived there my whole life before 1999), but since I had never driven in California before, I was quite nervous about doing so.The rental car had a GPS very similar to the Street Pilot, and using that gave me a great sense of confidence in driving around.
Shortly after my return I realized how badly we needed a GPS in our car.The Street Pilot was the best option for us because it has all the features of a factory-installed auto GPS, but the added convenience of being portable- now when I head out of town I can take the Street Pilot rather than having to rent a car with a GPS.Not to mention the Street Pilot is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost of a factory-installed system.
Some of the other reviewers have complained about how long it takes the Street Pilot to recalculate a route once the vehicle has gone off-route.I have intentionally gone off-route several times just to see how it performs, and I have been very pleased. It does take a few seconds, but from my experience it did not take so long that I got any further off-course than I already was.
A feature that I found to be very helpful in the Street Pilot which was not in the rental car's GPS is a search by company name.If you're looking for a department store, but you can't remember its address, just search by the name, and the Street Pilot will navigate you to the closest one. If you're looking for that great Chinese restaurant a couple of miles away, but you can't remember the name, you can search for Chinese restaurants in your area and find the correct one based on its address.Want to order ahead, or put your name on the seating list?Once the Street Pilot finds the restaurant you're looking for, it displays their phone number on the monitor as well.
About the only two complaints I have about the Street Pilot are very trivial. On the rental car I used, the GPS would automatically lower the volume on the stereo when the GPS needed to announce an instruction.Being an external unit, the Street Pilot does not have this luxury.Since I tend to listen to music, well, at ear-splitting volume while driving, it does take a little getting used to lowering the volume when using the Street Pilot around town, but again, this is a very minor complaint given all of the positive features the Street Pilot has.
My other complaint is that occasionally it does give directions which are not the most direct route.I used this on a trial basis in areas I was familiar with just to see how it performs, and I did find myself thinking on occasion "why is it telling me to go this way, when that way is much more direct?"Especially since I live within a half an hour of Garmin's world headquarters, it would seem to me that they would at least know the most direct routes around here! But even at this, the Street Pilot DOES get you to the correct destination every time, even if it sometimes takes an indirect route.
I noticed that the package includes both a beanbag mount and a permanent dashboard mount for the Street Pilot.Since Street Pilots have a way of being swiped, my suggestion would be to always use the beanbag mount, since a permanent mount could cause thieves to break into the car to find the GPS that is no longer in the car.I drive a new Jetta, and I did not want to get sticky stuff all over my dashboard, so I chose to try out the beanbag. It does not slip, even when making sharp turns.I suppose if I were in a collision this would not be the case, but in normal driving, the beanbag is great.
Of course, as others have advised, do not leave your Street Pilot in the car unattended for any reason. But given the fact that you're going to be spending around $1G for this puppy you probably already knew that.
And one other safety feature that I think is great, but others might be annoyed by it: once you are driving, you cannot change the destination; it goes into a secure mode.To change the address, you need to stop the car. This may be a nuisance to some, but given how badly people drive while talking on cell phones, it's probably best that Garmin tries to curb people from pressing all sorts of buttons on their GPS while zipping down the road at 75 MPH. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Canon IS 12x36 binoculars
While I agree that the binoculars can be adjusted to fit different individuals the range of adjustment is too small and will NOT accomodate some women and alsmost all children.

5-0 out of 5 stars We haven't found anything better.....
I have about 20 sets of 10X30 IS and three sets of 15X50 IS Canon binoculars and have ordered two of these. My officers rely on these to enforce game and fish laws in Minnesota and use them in very demanding weather. We have had few failures, only a couple of repairs(due to dropping and running a set over with a boat trailer). They make the difference between being able to tell that a guy shot a duck or being able to tell what kind of duck he shot. For the money there is nothing better when detail if important.

1-0 out of 5 stars Design flaw...
This product has a fatal design flaw. The two eye pieces are a fixed distance apart. If the width of your eyes are not the same as the binoculars, then you can only see properly through either the left or right lense, but not both. If you try to view using both, and your eyes are not wide enough, the center of your view has a blocked-out portion which is annoying. My eyes are not wide enough apart, so I can't use both lenses. The magnification is not as impressive as the other views state. However, the stabilization feature does work well, although I don't see it as such a needed feature really. I'd much rather be able to see through both lenses clearly. I plan to return them, and purchase a pair that has adjustable lense width. ... Read more
