    Editorial Review

Award-winning travel writers Shirley Slater and Harry Basch had tried just about every mode of transportation known to humans in their travels through 186 countries, but it wasn't until they drove an RV in 1991 that they found their passion. In the decade that followed they racked up 120,000 miles, avoided freeways whenever possible, and focused on discovering the offbeat and the best of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Exploring America by RV is aimed particularly at novices--with detailed advice on buying and renting RVs as well as RV'ing tips and hints on such things as what to look for in campsites, the miracle of bubble wrap, and "how to give backing-up directions without destroying your marriage"--it also outlines 10 excursions through the U.S., Canada, and Baja with enough unusual stops along the way that the book is a veritable gold mine. To get an idea of the sort of travel Slater and Basch prefer, here are some of the highlights of the California Desert & Las Vegas excursion: the Hullabaloo World Tobacco Spitting Championships, endangered desert pupfishes in Anza-Borrego State Park, and sand sailing in a dry lake at 70 mph with no brakes. Off-the-wall attractions in Alaska include the world's largest chopstick manufacturing plant, a collection of 3,600 billed caps, and the town of North Pole (where Santa gets his mail). Slater and Basch are fond of lists with names like: Ten Terrific Spots Where History Comes Alive (in the Blue Ridge Mountains); Ten Terribly Texas Things To Do; and Seven Swell Side Roads to Explore (in Baja). For each trip you'll find tips for keeping costs down, as well as suggestions for splurging (say, a helicopter ride around Mt. Rushmore or a stay on little Palm Island), a list of campground oases, and where to find some incredible-sounding treats (like bumbleberry pie at Zion National Park and the best lobster in Maine). Slater and Basch have had a good time demolishing the myth of RV'ers as national park lemmings who never leave their rigs: these guys know where the fun is. --Lesley Reed ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars If you want detailed trips in the U.S., this is a good book.
The book opens with a couple of good chapters on the basics of RB'ing and gives an excellent diary of their first trip which made me feel better. However, chapters 4 through 13 are detailed examples of trips in the U.S. which i will not be takin any time soon.Chp 14-16 review RV types and manufacturers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Home on Wheels
My husband and I came across this book by accident, and as brand new RV'ers it has become our bible!Out of all the "helpful" books and magazines, and personal experiences, this book has covered all we needed to know and then some; right up to the decision to sell our home, what type of RV to buy, which pickup to purchase and what to take along, as well as where to go, how to set up and how to break camp.We have found every piece of advice to be accurate, and would recommend that every RV'er have a copy of this, whether they are just beginning or are long time travelers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and not useful - save your money
As a new RV owner, I was very eager to purchase this book and two others so I could become familiar with the terminology and learn about how to use and take care of my RV.After reading The RVer's Bible (by Kim & Sunny Baker) and RVing Basics (by Bill & Jan Moeller) first, I was thoroughly disappointed with this booklet. The other two books are very detailed, well written and I give them high marks. However, this booklet is very basic, skims over most topics and is sprinkled with so many grammatical errors I had to toss it in the waste paper basket.Fortunately, a co-worker told me about the awesome Amazon.com return policy, so all was not lost. Save your money and buy the other two books!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Newbies"
Upon receiving this book by Carol Ray, my husband and I immediately opened it with much enthusiasm. We couldn't put it down knowing full well we were onto the next adventure in our lives. It was so plainly written that even "we" could understand it.Being in the airline business, my husband a pilot and me a flight attendant, we are so looking forward to seeing the US by driving instead of at 35,000 ft.

We feel that we are fairly educated and whoever didn't like this book, must not really be interested in RVing. When we went to do negotiations at the dealership, I had highlighted quite a few things. As I told the salesperson, "I've been doing my homework," of which they all replied, "Oh, not another one."I took that as a compliment to myself as well as to Carol.

To make a long story a little shorter, we walked out of the dealership with a bare bones price of 60,000, getting everything and every option available but a w/d, that we will install later, for 45,500.

WE THANK YOU CAROL.Don and Ann Fogal aka FOGAL"S FIVER ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Is There an Editor in the House?
Overwritten, confusing, and sloppily edited. Full of misspellings, omitted or duplicated words. RV owners are often confronted with an incomplete, generic owner's manual, which contradicts the separate component manuals to which it refers the owner. I was hoping this book would serve as a quick-start introduction to understanding and maintaining my diesel pusher motorhome, and make it easier to wade through these manuals. No such luck. Yes, the information is there, but the presentation is so amateurish that the book loses credibility. If you don't believe me, read the first sentence of the chapter on RV electrical systems. It's rare that an author can be redundant and contradictory at the same time, but Mr. Bunzer achieved it. I received this book as a gift, and it's still annoying.

4-0 out of 5 stars You're not an idiot, but you're no RV Mastermind, get this.
I was surprised.Great illustrations, in-depth enough to satisfy my curiosity, but not to the engineering level. If you have an I.Q. over 100, skip the Idiots guide and just buy this book for it covers the basics in one chapter and the real "guts" in the other chapter.Everything is covered from solar power to rubber roofs to checklists and notes areas. It's a book you work with and in as well as from.Wiring diagrams, suggested manufacturers, and even mathmatical formulas will help the novice gain a solid understanding of the RV as a whole.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general info
The book offer great review of basic and generic RV systems. Now I have a much better understanding of propane, electrical, and water system, etc. It offers all the basic information to do your repairs. Provided a minimal general mechanic knowledge the book does the job. The only shadow is the number of sketch and plans is a bit low and information is not specific to any RV model. It is a general book, so I do not think we should expect such detail for each vehicule model. It does not offer step by step description of repairs, so you have to know a bit. On the other hand I will keep the book in my RV for all repair. This is a recommended book for every RV owner book. It could be quite useful to fully understand what the RV repairman had done/is doing/will do to your vehicule. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Makes some assumptions on facilities
This cookbook had some limited use for me. It was a short introduction on tips for RV cooking. Overall some good general tips, but nothing that probably isn't in a good trade magazine. As an experienced camping and backpacking cook I was hoping for information on RV cooking now that I have a refrigerator. It does give some good recipes that utilize the better facilities of an RV. However about half the recipes assume you have an oven as well. My small Class B RV doesn't have an oven. Therefore, half the book is useless for me. Overall a slightly disappointing book that I wish I had looked over before purchasing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all about RV's and not all about laughs
If you are looking at this one thinking it's some sort of RV Joke Book or hilarious compendium of RV adventures, it's not.

Some of the content has nothing to do with RV'ing and though interesting is most definitely not amusing. I love the writer's style though and read the whole book cover to cover in about an hour and a half, with a few laughs to myself on the way, one or two out loud and on the whole I enjoyed the book, it was worth the $10 shipping to here in the UK.

I would say go ahead and buy it for another viewpoint on RV'ing, which is what I bought it for, but there is no substitute for your own RV adventures and you can't beat the laughs you have between you and yours on tour.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
I read this book straight through in one sitting. The parts about the authors two dogs are particularly funny. (I don't blame the Doberman for hiding under the table).I hope he writes another book with furtheradventures.I would definitely buy it!

Mr. Parker has a delightful sense of humor--something that as a fellow rver I know can be of immense value on the road.I can identify with most if not all of the situations he described and found the book bothentertaining and accurate in describing some of the"difficulties" that an rver may encounter along the way.I lookforward to hearing more of Mr. Parker's travels in the future--whereeverhis rv may take him. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" for RVers on the Open Road
A friend recently loaned us a copy of "Spirit of the Open Road".This book is an absolute "Must Read" for anyone who has any kind of recreational vehicle or anyone who thinks he may want one.We are reasonably seasoned RVers (we have graduated over a period of 20 years from a pup tent on the back of a motorcycle all the way up to a Class A motorhome), and we don't know how we ever survived without this book.Peggy McDonald has done a masterful and entertaining job of really telling it like it is."Spirit" is chock full of timely tips and suggestions that have been gleaned from on-the-road experience and is presented in a style that anyone can enjoy. It is particularly appropriate for Canadians who want to be winter snowbirds.I agree with another reviewer who wrote that every RVer should have two copies - one to keep and one to loan out to your friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit of the Open Road, by Peggi M
Whether you are new to RVing or have been RVing for years, Spirit of the Open Road is in fact Essential and the only Reference Guide RVers will need. When we started RVing a friend recommended this book and I am sure glad we purchased it. Spirit of the Open Road is always at my finger tips and is full of helpful Facts and tips; everything from saftey to what you should look for when purchasing a new or new to you Rig; budgeting for Full-Time RVers; important information to know when travelling across the border; and, the list goes on. The selling feature for me is the fact that the author, Peggi McDonald, writes about her and her husband John's personal RVing experiences. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work, Peggi & John!

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Book!
My wife and I are new Rvers & were looking for a good book or two to help us learn and avoid beginner mistakes. If you are in the same boat, this is the book for you! While the book is subtitled "The Essential Reference for Canadian RVers",it is almost completely irrelevant whether you live in Canada or the USA (as we do). This book is about the RV experience - period. Jam-packed with tips, it teaches you the basics and much, much more. This book, written from years of experience & suggestions from other RVers, is very complete and informative. If you're not a novice, you still just might find some great ideas that you had not occurred to you before.

The book is easily read, fun, and well laid out. You'll find information on maximizing your space, towing/driving, dealing with pets, budgeting for your RV lifestyle, finding a good campground, buying or selling your RV, and much more.

I bought 5 different RV related books, but "Spirit of the Open Road" was far and away the best of the bunch. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Woodalls North American Directory
Woodalls North American Campground Directory is a valuable asset for any camper. It is a huge book, but the size is necessary to cover the campgrounds of North America. It is divided into east and west reagions and then alphabetically by state in each region. You an purchase the east orwest region directories separately, but if you plan to camp in bothregions, it it less expensive to purshase the North American directory. Thesection for each state begins with information of interest about differentareas of the state. There is a map of the state showing the cities wherecampgrounds are located. The campgrounds are then listed by city and manyof them are rated for camparisons. Last year's prices are listed to givethe reader some idea of this year's costs. Phone numbers and directions tothe campgrounds are provided as well. This directory is a valuable resourcefor the camper. It is a guide one can use for a couple of years beforereplacing it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great design, easy to clean . . .
. . . and attractive! This little roaster has it all.Big enough to handle a 12-pound whole boneless turkey, this is a fabulous item for singles or a couple.

I've had an 18-quart Nesco roaster for the past 10 years, and I still say it makes the best roast turkey of any other cooking method. This smaller 6-quart unit follows the same design principles as its larger counterpart: the heat source surrounds the cooking well, so it acts as a "slow cooker" as well as a roaster. You can cook everything from savory stews to roast vegetables to muffins.

The roaster comes with a small recipe book, but you'll find yourself looking for more recipes.Be sure to check out the many slow cooker recipe sources, and don't be afraid to use your own imagination. After all, clean up is a snap.

I have two Nesco Roasters, a 6 QT and an 18 QT. I don't know how I survived without them.Better than a crock pot. Unlike most crock pots Nesco's have metal inserts not glass. They clean in a breeze and the temp setting allows for not only slow cooking but roasting, steaming and baking.I have yet to make a bad meal and the slow cook feature is great for working people. Weber's Go-Anywhere charcoal grill makes a great companion for camping and tailgate parties. This compact unit has a surprisingly generous grilling area--large enough to fit four medium steaks. You can lock the lid into place with the pivoting legs and carry this lightweight grill around in one hand. Built-in lid hangers allow you to rest the lid on the side of the grill to create an effective barrier against the wind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Takes a lot of abuse
First of all, despite some comments here that would lead you to believe otherwise, this is NOT a gas grill. The dead giveaway is the word "charcoal" in the product title.

Even though this is designed to be a travel grill (with folding legs that secure the cover in place), I use it as my primary grill.I like to grill at all times of the year so I leave it on the patio all year round and sometimes have to dig through a snowdrift to find it.I'm surprised it hasn't rusted out yet since it has been sitting outside for more than five years. The wood parts are weathered, but still no sign of metal corrosion. When this one eventually goes I'll probably get small round Weber since I really don't need the travel feature.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not outstanding either
It does the job, but as one reviewer said, it doesn't get very, very hot.Hot enough to cook meat well - yes, but the hamburgers don't have a terrific taste, just an average + ordinary taste. This would all be fine if I only paid $24.99 for it, but I paid $49.99.It is well made of good materials, but honestly, I don't see where it's much different from what they're selling at Wal-Mart for thirtysomething dollars or less.

5-0 out of 5 stars BBQ Toolbox!
I had a similarly designed Sunbeam charcoal tabletop that rusted out after 15 years. I had given up on finding a replacement until I saw this gem on amazon. It has the same compact design as the Sunbeam, a stable base, wind resistant grilling, AND THE QUALITY OF A WEBER!!!! The best feature is the folding legs that lock the contents inside the grill and allow easy portability. I know this one will last longer than the pressed metal of the old one. Thank you. ... Garmin eMap GPS Receiver (Map Compatible)
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $242.84
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Save yourself the humiliation of having to stop and ask directions on your next lengthy road trip: invest in Garmin's eMap. The eMap GPS receiver will give you fairly accurate mapping information, directions, and even help you manage and track your journeys.

For those unfamiliar with the term, GPS (global positioning system) involves 24 satellites that circle the planet. At any given time, the eMap makes contact with at least three of them to determine everything from speed to location. So, as long as you're motoring around the great outdoors, you'll be in the know.

It features a detailed 120 x 160 pixel display, backlighting for nighttime navigating, and easily navigable controls. With the eMap's simple cursor control, you should be up and running with almost no effort. Considering this unit only weighs 6.7 ounces, it could easily be the best roadside companion on long drives--or local trips if you're that directionally challenged.

If you're going to do some serious pioneering, you're also in for a good deal of choices. You can catalog 500 waypoints, 2,000 log points, and 10 saved tracks. But there is a downside to all this power in the palm of your hand: Garmin supplies you with only basic mappings of major roadways and intersections. If you're looking for city-street maps or more detailed coverage, get the checready. Garmin sells optional MapSource CD-ROMs that will provide enormous amounts of map data, showing streets, alleys, and even restaurants. A series of different Map CD-ROMs are available and cost, on average, about $170. When all is said and done, with hidden costs, you can expect to spend upwards of $350 to get everything you'd need out of the eMap. --Dave Thomas

    Pros:

    • Easy to use
    • Lightweight
    • Large, crisp display
    • Room for extra memory cartridges
    • Map data fed by satellite good for North America and parts of Europe

    Cons:

    • Detailed maps are expensive

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic System with tons of available accessories
I've owned this unit for a couple of months now.I didn't want to write a review without having used it.It works GREAT.There are some issues, but they are readilly worked around.

First issue is price. For the base unit, the price is quite reasonable. However, as another reviewer mentioned, in order to really make it work right, you really do need some accessories.Garmin accessories surely seem over priced. In order to use this on the road, I purchased a Dash-Mount, and a power cable/pc serial cable.I picked up both of these for less than 40.00 through aftermarket suppliers.

It didn't take me long to realize that I needed some extra software to download more detailed maps to the GPS base unit.MetroGuide from Mapsource is available through aftermarket distributors for under 75.00.It's somewhat tedious to download the individual regions, but well worth the effort.Additionally, with the PC cable, it interacts seamlessly with my laptop running either Metro Guide or Microsoft Streets and Trips (under 40.00).Of course streets and trips does not download to the GPS, but the GPS will plot its position in S&T, so if you can use the laptop, it works fine.

Off road/camping is a different issue.I already own most of the paper maps for where I plan on going, and the GPS grids make it impossible to get lost. This doesn't even take into account the way it interacts with USAPHOTOMAPS (usaphotomaps.com).This receiver will plot my position using aerial photography available free and online.

This is a great unit, with a readilly accessible manual from GARMIN, scads of available accessories through after-market dealers (gilsson.com), integration with software from Mapsource, Microsoft, USA photmaps, etc.A great unit that does everything I could ask for.

3-0 out of 5 stars The GPS money pit
I've been using this unit for a few weeks now and it never fails to amaze me with it's capabilities even if the learning curve for it is a bit steep (an instructional video is available for an additional charge).I'm sure there are features I'll never use due to its complexity.

The problem I have is that it comes with nothing. If you want to actually be able to use the unit, you've got to go back to Garmin and buy additional accessories and guess what, ... their all proprietary so they can and do charge whatever they feel like.Things like the computer/power adapter and a memory card should have been included for the price they're asking for the unit. The memory sticks... and the USB adapterare outrageously priced.Yeah, that's right, the computer/power adapter isn't even USB, you have to buy both or your stuck with the glacial speed of serial. To further illustrate, to replace the little piece of plastic that covers the batteries, it'll cost you nearly $7!

Basically, they put a pretty good little GPS on the market as bait to lock you into their brand and sell, at ridiculous prices, accessories that should have come with it anyways.I would give the unit by itself 4 stars but for Garmin's complete lack of integrity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Off the beaten track--with confidence!
Late this summer, I was driving a rented minivan from Mendocino, CA, south to the Bay area. It's about 180 miles. I was with three other adults and three children. Instead of taking the recommended RT 128 southeast to RT 101 and south to the Bay area, we decided to take a "shorter" route, due east on Lake Road to RT 20 to RT 101, then south. Well, the road we chose went through deep redwood forests. More often then not, we could not see the sky. There were times when the road was no longer paved, at times rutted. It was so narrow that for most of the way it would have been impossible for two vehicles to pass (fortunately, no vehicles came our way). The road often snaked around tree trunks as large as 10 feet in diameter.

This road was on both our AAA map and GPS (I had preloaded the corresponding map onto my 64mb data card from the MetroGuide CD). The going was very slow, and our "shorter" route soon became the "longer" route. We were too far along to turn around. My wife, seated in the back held the portable phone ready to call for assistance. I asked all to wait, to put her trust in the GPS. After another half hour, we came to a three-road junction--all narrow and un-maintained. One of the roads was not on the AAA map. Intuitively, it looked like the least likely road. But the GPS indicated this road would take us to the RT 20. We took it, and before you knew it, arrived at the conventional RT 20. The GPS saved the day.

One of the greatest attributes of a GPS is that it allows you to explore, to go where you normally would not, and discover new vistas. Obviously, my eMap proved that.

Besides this general function, there are several specific features I like about the eMap. These include its portability and its ergonomic design. The eMap has a relatively large display (which can be backlit) and it is light, just over 6 oz. When walking with this unit in a town or on a trail, I appreciate being able to hold and control the unit with one hand while always having the display in view. This is a result of the control buttons being below the screen.

The eMap is compatible with Garmin's downloadable MapSource CDs. These include U.S. Roads and Recreation, WorldMap, U.S. Topo, and MetroGuide U.S.A. With the MapGuide U.S.A. CD, the eMap can look up addresses and telephone numbers for nearby services and points of interest. I like being able find a particular restaurant or street address by entering it under the find feature, then tracking it. An arrow will point in the right direction and distance will be displayed.

There are many available accessories, several which I recommend. I needed a larger data card. The unit comes with an 8mb card which will give you one region. This is okay if you will be using it in a limited radius. If you go elsewhere, you'll need to load new data using a serial cable (another accessory). It is time consuming, which may suggest your getting another accessory, the Garmin's USB data programmer. I have a 64mb card which captures from Massachusetts to Maryland (8 regions). Using the serial cable took over two hours to load the data. Using the programmer took about four minutes.

I definitely recommend this unit. Its portability, versatility, its adjustable detail, and its accuracy give you the confidence to venture places without getting lost. One suggestion though--don't give up the paper map. Use it to provide the fuller perspective a portable GPS lacks. ... Read more

Garmin's United States Roads & Recreation CD-ROM includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units. Roads & Recreation contains highways, interstates, and local, county, and residential roads for all 50 states. It also shows shoreline detail for lakes, reservoirs, and rivers, with icons indicating boat ramps, dams, marinas, public facilities, mile markers, and first aid stations. In addition, it points out U.S. nautical navigational aids such as days of your movie or taped program. The time stamp will display the station, program, and time with the push of a button. Audio-video outputs and inputs are conveniently located on the front panel and can be used to hook up a camcorder or video game.

1-0 out of 5 stars LOOK OUT
I have a Legend and wanted additional map details for my unit - so I purchased this software. Well, I got all the map details but no functionality. The documentation is bad and so is the online help. Worst of all you can not even look up a street address - even with a paper map I can look up the general area of a street. What's up with that? I would not recommend this product at all buy the Metroguide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but....
This really is a step up on the standard map that comes loaded in the eTrex Vista, and when driving around with the GPSr attached, I never have to ask for directions. However, in a large growing area like where I live, there are always new subdivisions popping up, and this can't keep up with them. The software is over 3 years old, and while it makes inter-city travel a breeze, and familiarizes you with new places, you'll always still need a map close by for reference, especially if you drive any amount for a living.

1-0 out of 5 stars Make sure this product is appropriate for your GPS
I purchased this product to plot and provide turn-by-turn directions for trips and to load maps to my Legend. This product does not provide turn-by-turn directions. When I called the Garmin software help line, the suggestion was made to purchase the Metroguide USA product since it had all functions of R&R and more. Seems the R&R was the first software product offered and is for low memory units (1mb). This is an obsolete product and since I opened the package--it cannot be returned. If you have a newer GPS unit with more than a mb of memory, don't bother with this software. It is not designed for your unit. Don't look for this info in the manual--it's not there. Call the help line and you may find your money was wasted. ... Read more

Black and Decker DB700 DustBuster PowerVac Powered by VersaPak

    Editorial Review

In the past, we've been underwhelmed by the performance of other brands' hand-held cordless vacuums. With this in mind, we weren't expecting much--unfairly, it turns out--from Black & Decker's new and improved DustBuster PowerVac. Powered by VersaPak, this little sucker delivers serious suction. We took the DustBuster out to the workshop and watched it inhale sawdust, and it didn't skip a beat when picking up larger wood chips. In the house, it made quick work of dirt, cat hair, cookie crumbs... you name it. In a word: impressive. The dirt cup holds 8 ounces. There are also two filters and a crevice tool to reach into crannies. Like the DustBuster of old, the PowerVac's recharging base mounts conveniently on the wall. The new two-battery system on this vacuum, however, is a vast improvement over the old model. Overall, the DustBuster is a very handy tool both in the workshop and around the house. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more
