5-0 out of 5 stars To all expectant fathers, and boys out there as well
I fully recommend this book to anyone who wants to have the most detailed look ever into the womb during pregnancy.I have seen this book before when i was much younger, and i must say this edition is the best ever! The pictures have mostly been updated,no more cheesy 70's/80's look, and the delivery pictures are still excellent but most importantly they are less graphical as they used to be.The text explained more now in a easier to understand context and seeing the joy between newborns and the parents, especially the moms, truly brings tears to me eyes.AA++ and salutes to Mr Nilsson

I can't think of a book I would more sincerely recommend to everyone in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing eye-opener for the unitiated
My wife and I are expecting our first and this book was given to us as a gift. I look at it every single day. It's amazing. I take it to family functions to show relatives. I take it to work.

The photography in this book is out of this world. Wide-angle shots inside the womb showing an entire baby at 7 months. Incredible!

The explanations of how it all works are good too. All in layman's terms and very easy to wrap your head around.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who's expecting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, biased book.
I found this book spectacularly unhelpful, and ridiculous in the sense that it actually encourages the reader to think that they know more than their experienced, educated medical providers AFTER ONLY READING THIS BOOK!What a crock. It also shows a clear bias against any medical professional and implies that their motives are simply to make your birth as convenient for them as possible.I am considering throwing this book away, which is something I have NEVER done.Waste of money and paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing book
As a Doula (professional labor assistant) and future childbirth educator, I recommend this book to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all pregnant women and their partners!!!
Truely opened my husband's and my eyes to how much we did NOT know about childbirth. This is far too important an event to put blind faith in doctors and a medical system that don't always have your best interests at heart.Education is your most valuable weapon against unnecessary intervention.Read everything you can get your hands on about labor and birth, but if you can only read one book, read this one!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Need to buy another one
I bought this book before the birth of my first child and found it so full of good information that I lent it to a friend... Now that I am expecting my second child, I am ordering another copy for myself.
It was by far the most informative book I read about child birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Childbirth Resource
This is a great book. My son was born overseas in a small town and this book was the only natural childbirth resource I used. It provided me with all the necessary information about the Lamaze method which proved to be a HUGE help for me during the birth process. The pre-delivery exercise plan included is simple yet effective. I highly recommend this book to any woman, but especially those who - for whatever reason - may not be taking any specific childbirthing classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to find a better reference on Lamaze
My wife and I are extreme information hounds (much to the suprise and occasionaly annoyance of doctors and hospital staff who are used to the usual uninformed masses). We have researched many childbirthing books including those somewhat opposed to the Lamaze method. But this book set the record strait and proved itself in its comprehensiveness and generally satisfied our demanding desire for knowledge.I can't say that the book contains the absolute answer for every imaginable question, but it does provide a comprehensive and reasonable foundation for what Lamaze really stands for in all its nuances.

I'm somehow suprised that more soon-to-be mothers out there don't want to read more about what is going to take place to them.Information is key to understanding, security and a sense of control. This pook provides alot of that.

We looked at a lot of good books on childbirthing. This is probably the only one we would actually recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pregnant or not, read this book !
A single 30 year-old male, I saw a small notice that Dr. LeBoyer was to give a talk about "birthing" to our comunity. Not at all interested in the subject,(geez I didn't even have a girlfriend!) I only went to see this guy because he had presided over 10,000 births! If he had done that many anythings(like knitted sweaters) I would probably also would have gone!
When he entered the room, I was surprised how short he was, and how handsome. I was moved by what he had to say. A year later I read the book and tears were streaming down my cheeks. Such was its profound truth and beauty. Never before or since has reading had this effect on me.
1979 I was the mid-wife for my daughter's birth, and followed the book's advice exactly. At thirty minutes old she was immersed in the water, her clenched fingers relaxed, the vernix disappeared, the wrinkled skin filled out, her whole body relaxed, she looked straight into my eyes and smiled!
Now this same daughter is pregnant with her first child and I am buying a copy of Leboyer's book for her.
I recommend this book to everyone, everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author, Leboyer, Has Delivered More Than 10,000 Babies
This book will give parents-to-be techniques for easing the birth trauma and helping the new human being to start life without pain, confusion, and fear. This book is revolutionizing the way we bring our children into the world. The book is affordable and available on the Amazon Marketplace for as low as one cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
This book is exactly what the title describes. It is about giving birth naturally and "actively."
What I like about this book is that it did not lean towards birthing in a hospital as oppossed to home birthing, or prefer a doctor over a mid-wife. Instead, it gave neutral and clear facts about medications and birthing procedures.
I was frightened about childbirth before reading this book. Now I am looking forward to the experience! I feel very prepared mentally and emotionally, because I know exactly what to expect. This book took me through the birthing process step by step, eliminating my fears!
This book has a section of helpful excersises as well, which are yoga based, and great for stretching those muscles that will be used during labor!
Although the book touches on breast-feeding, it does not cover it extensively.
The book also touches on water birthing, with an entire chapter dedicated to it. I found that chapter a bit outdated, but the information was still very useful and helpful.
This is an excellent book for those wanting to take control of their birthing process/experience, and learn more about how a woman's body is designed to open up to give birth.
There are some pictures of women giving birth, that are not pretty but helpful to get a better idea of positions. There are also many diagrams that do the same thing.
I would recommend this book to anyone experiencing a first-time pregnancy or anyone planning on giving natural birth. It was extremely helpful, interesting, informative and mind-easing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring-- couldn't finish the book
There's a lot of yoga type poses that the book recommends for exercise and birth, but without photos, I couldn't figure out the poses.I'm not that familiar with yoga poses, so that may have been a hinderance.

This book didn't help me much with prepping for birth, except to encourage deep breathing.I highly recommend THE BIRTHING PARTNER.The book is for the birthing partner, but I learned every little thing there is to know about the birthing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend for all pregnant women!
I recommend this book for all pregnant women- whether you are determined to have a natural childbirth, know for sure you will use drugs, or somewhere in between. After reading this book, I am less scared of the childbirth process.
The book is wonderful. It explains some positions that can help in childbirth, and that will make contractions more effective (and offers good explanations as to why) and has a section of pregnancy yoga so you are prepared to use those positions. There also is a section on how to cope with pain.
As far as the pictures in the book go- if you are offended by the childbirth process and pictures depicting it, then you may not want to get this book. These are natural pictures of women having babies.Yes some are naked, but I don't find them offensive at all.
I *know* I will use some kind of painkiller during childbirth, but I am determined to go as long as I can without them. This book makes a very stong and logical case for being active during labor and delivery.I didn't feel that the author put down anyone who preferred a hospital birth - there's a chapter on how to have an active birth in a hospital. She did make strong points against using drugs in labor, but again, I didn't feel she was totally against using them- she said that there are some cases where the benefits of painkillers may be worth the risks.I definitely didn't get a sense of "hospitals and painkillers are evil" like I have with other birthing books.Another birthing book you may want to look into that doesn't have that attitude is "Birthing Partner."
Again, I cannot recommend this book enough. It offers a lot of knowledge and reassurance for pregnant women. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly realistic description of the 1st year
I haven't read a lot of books about the postpartum period that realistically describe the physical and emotional effects of becoming a mother. This book was a refreshing change of pace. After the birth of my child, I felt guilty about not being overjoyed. Sheila Kitzinger validated my feelings, which made it easier for me to accept my new role as a mother.I disagree with the previous review, describing the book as "depressing and morbid".Unfortunately, hormonal upheavals and dramatic lifestlye changes can feel that way.But I think that anyone that has had a baby should read this book.It describes what many women are thinking, but often don't talk about for fear of being judged as "abnormal". I believe that the author's discussion of these thoughts and feelings can be empowering for a new mother. It's a good read for what can sometimes be a challenging period in a woman's life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Depressing and morbid.
Don't buy this book. Each chapter seems to focus on the negative aspects of birth and having a baby. It's depressing, morbid, and has little practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
Giving birth and becoming a mother was chaotic, overwhelming, wonderful and scary at the same time, and of the many books I bought to help me through it, only this book really helped. Where so much that is written about the experience of new parents is advice driven and vaguely judgmental, this book has the perfect empathetic air. So many times while reading this book I would think "oh yes, that is exactly what I have been feeling!"My only advice to expectant mothers would be, buy this book, wrap it up, and give it to yourself as a gift for that moment when you are back home with your new child!!! ... Editorial Review

Single moms haven't had many books to turn to in times of distress. Most parenting guides either moralize to her or ignore her altogether. Patrice Karst has righted that wrong with The Single Mother's Survival Guide. The book is obviously designed to console--and fast--the poor mom who has once again dragged the baby into the bathroom with her because she literally cannot get a moment alone. Flip open to any page and you'll find earthy bits of inspiration, with a consistently (but not sickeningly) positive slant on childcare, dating, and other facts of single-mom life. Karst never loses her tenacious hold on the realities of parenting: on her list of"Reasons to Be Happy About Being a Single Mom," the first one is "because it's happening." It's a treat to read a book so completely on the side of the mom. Karst rants against busybodies and smug marrieds: "The next person who says to you, 'Well, when you learn to be perfectly content and happy with yourself and aren't looking for a relationship--then you'll find one,' slap them for me, will ya?" So the advice isn't exactly revolutionary: love the kids, take a bath, ask for help. Still, this volume makes a fine companion piece (just ignore the workbook at the back) to the bible of single-parenting, Anne Lamott's Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year. --Claire Dederer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I picked up this book thinking, lets take a look.(Since I am recently divorced.)I could not put it down in the book store. So I had to buy it.It made me laugh and cry, and right away I had to write Patrice. It made me realize that I am not alone and that it is okay to cry and take time for your self. After all like Patrice said in the book, you are doing a super human job.To me, this is a must have book, and I think that every single parent should at least pick it up just to read.It has also helped me with my 5 year old daughter. It has taught me that her life is precious, and that it is not going to kill her to have take out 5 nights a week.Shoot, by the time I get home from work and college classes, I don't feel like cooking. And many single parents can agree on that.Every time I feel down and that I cannot do this any more I pick up this book.It has also helped me set gaols for my life.So I suggest picking this book up as soon as possible.

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it 0 stars, I would
This book was a total waste of money. I bought this for myself, and despised it. I read it once, in disbelief that anything so bad could be published, put it on the shelf and never looked at it again until it was time for a garage sale.
Don't make the same I did and actually purchase this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!!
Ok, i bought the book because i wanted some inspiration and some ideas on how to cope with being a 28 year old single mother of 2 boys. And what i am getting (i am not even done yet) is alot of humor. She makes some really good points so far and this book offers some useful tips on spotting losers and avoiding them as potential Mr. Right's, the need to keep your house clean and the decision to make this enjoyable instead of a God awful experience. She is very real and very funny. The humor alone is worth it.

The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World Is Still the Least Valued

Editorial Review

Many mothers have long suspected that they're getting the short end of the deal--and finally, a highly respected economics journalist proves they're not just griping. Despite all the lip service given to the importance of motherhood, American mothers are not only not paid for all the work they do, but also penalized for it. "The gift of care can be both selfless and exploited," writes Ann Crittenden in this intrepid and groundbreaking work. Motherhood is dangerously undervalued--it's now the single biggest risk factor for poverty in old age. Mothers lose out in forgone income if they stay at home, an inflexible job market makes part-time work scarce or inadequately paid, and in the case of divorce, they're refused family assets by divorce laws that don't count their unpaid work.

Crittenden is fond of pointing out the hypocrisies plaguing America, and one is the belief in a welfare state enabling single mothers. The true welfare state, she says, protects paid workers from unforeseen risks through social security, unemployment insurance, and workman's compensation. Mothers who work part-time or not at all have no such safety net and typically take a nosedive into poverty, along with their children, after divorce or the death of their spouse. Married working moms are also punished--they pay the highest taxes on earned income in America. Crittenden's impassioned argument is based on research in a variety of fields, from economics to child development to demography. She shows how mothers were demoted from an economic asset to dependents, why welfare for only a certain group of mothers bred bitterness among the rest, and why there is currently an exodus of highly trained women from the work force.

Crittenden also travels far and wide for solutions. She finds them not only in such European nations as Sweden--which has abolished child poverty by giving mothers a year's paid leave, cash subsidies, and flexible work schedules--but in the U.S. military, which runs the best subsidized child-care program in the country and knows the value of providing special benefits to those who selflessly serve their country. Ultimately, Crittenden insists, the equality women have been fighting for will only be achieved when mothers are recognized as productive citizens creating a much-needed public good--human capital, or in layman's terms, well-raised children who grow into productive, law abiding citizens (and who pay into social security). This is an admirable--and charged--defense of motherhood, reminding us that unpaid female labor is "the priceless, invisible heart of the economy," and those who engage in this labor deserve the same rights, and the same respect, as other workers. --Lesley Reed ... 3-0 out of 5 stars More Important are the Rewards of Motherhood
As a stay at home mother of 5 the title of this book intrigued me. I was interested in learning the history of how motherhood came to be valued so little by modern America. And I hoped for affirmation of my life's hardest and most important work: mothering. The beginning of the book seemed to offer both. I could relate to the instant loss of success and credibility when, despite economic and social pressures, I left my professional career to stay home with my first baby. One of my husband's married male cousins actually asked me a chapter question, "So....exactly what DO you do all day at home?"

As I read through the first half of the book I became angry at maternal social injustices and was inspired by the baby-passion that encourages mothers to raise their own children anyway. But in the second half of the book I felt profound disappointment. Ms. Crittenden seems to come to the conclusion that any form of motherhood is worthy of financial remuneration, it matters not if a mother's child is in round-the-clock day care. The myths of feminism's working woman are (inadvertently?) reinforced over the unrecognized contributions and sacrifices of career mothering.

There are however seeds of a greater truth scattered within the pages of this book: a mother breastfeeding her baby, a mother caring for an aging family member, a mother who manages the household, volunteers her time, and homeschools her children should be acknowledged and valued (page 66). We know the price of motherhood, the rewards are less understood, and a deeper question remains. How can we, as a society, best support, protect and value motherhood?

"Labor is prior to, and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves a much higher consideration." Abraham Lincoln

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read
This book offers a searing criticism of the ways that mothers pay a price in our society. I read this book for my own edification and loved her honesty. It's written in easy to read style.

I also used excerpts of this book in one of my women's studies classes and the students enjoyed it. Many of the re-entry students actually told me that they either checked it out at the library or purchased the book.

I perused the reviews and was amused at how some reviewers felt that this book was whiny. Why is it that when we disagree we have to say that she (usually a woman under attack!) is whining. Motherhood isn't all bread and roses and this book explains why.

1-0 out of 5 stars Destroying our country in the name of motherhood?
I was disturbed by this book, to put it mildly.I am a stay-at-home mom myself, and I was curious about the tenets of a book that appeared to be defending mothers.Instead, in the name of motherhood, the author attacks our wonderful Constitutional government by blatantly extolling and calling for greater Socialism in our country.Has our freedom become so cheap in the last 200 years that we would lose it, not to an outside enemy, but from within by our own countrymen?I recommend that anyone thinking of reading this anti-American propaganda think again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't lend it to a friend (or my sister)
This book ended up in my "keep" pile. I found it to be an excellent resource. Tamaro has a relaxed approach, using comedic illustrations, humorous statements and simple language to impart a wealth of knowledge. This book was read straight through and then revisited section by section, as needed. Any woman who wishes to be successful with breastfeeding will find that this hits all of the big issues, covers all the small helpful hints that a veteran would share with a close friend, and provides important resource information. Rather than lending this book, I am quick to buy this book as a gift for expecting friends and relatives. No doubt, 5 stars for this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
Unless you want to read an account of how wonderful the author is at breastfeeding you should leave this one alone.

I bought this book in hopes of finding basic information and resources.I did find some basic information but also found myself frustrated by the author's lack of discussion of some topics. For example, nipple confusion.... the author simply says don't let your baby get it, never addressing what to do if it is too late etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to suceed at breastfeeding
This is a GREAT resource that thoroughly prepares you for the experience of breastfeeding and shows you how to handle inevidable problems. Breastfeeding is a LEARNED skill. It may be natural - but it does not come naturally to baby or mother. Cracked nipples, "not enough milk/milk not coming in" etc. are problems that you need to understand the route cause of so you can fix them properly.

I have inverted nipples and had a hell of a time getting Ava to latch in the hospital. They wanted to give her formula in the first 24 hours before I had even seen a LC. Luckily I was well informed about the process and knew that my baby did not NEED formula that soon and demanded a visit from a lactation consultant who got us going. I knew ahead of time that after the first 3-6 weeks things would start to get easier - which helped me to not quit during the first two when things are the hardest (a common mistake). Though we had our share of challenges (sore nipples, nursing strikes, supply issues), now we are old pros. This book was my bible in the beginning and I still consult it 4 months later. I know my success in nursing my daughter is largely due to the things I learned in this book.

The Mother Trip: Hip Mama's Guide to Staying Sane in the Chaos of Motherhood

Editorial Review

In The Mother Trip, her follow-up to the cult classic, The Hip Mama Survival Guide, Ariel Gore offers the kind of down-to-earth, truthful mothering conversations that you'd expect to have with a best girlfriend. In this collection of essays--some lasting one page, some stretching to five--Gore deftly spotlights the messy corners of motherhood: sleeplessness, depression, weird pregnancy dreams, the restless hunger for creativity, and the passionate love of children. This is comforting turf, especially for mothers who have felt patronized and bored by the numerous advice-laden mothering manuals on the market. Gore mixes straight talk with dreamier musings, using sensual details and thoughtful subtext to illuminate the spirituality of motherhood. (Her essay about being 19, pregnant, and living with a transient boyfriend in Italy is a masterfully crafted gem.) A sexy, political, and highly conscious mother who refuses to diminish herself, Gore is one of the best mothering role models to show up on the written page. In the essay "Children Need Interesting Mothers," she writes,

We need time to ourselves, moments of awareness, connections, meaningful work. We need cheap art, good sex, nights at the bowling alley and days at the beach. We need good coffee, hearty meals, lush gardens and time to relax and enjoy our lives without worrying so much that we are good enough mothers or skinny enough girlfriends or wives. Here's the 35th-anniversary edition of the big book on breastfeeding, written by the experts at La Leche League International. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a comprehensive resource guide providing just about everything you need to know about how--and why--to breastfeed your baby. Latch on to this book for step-by-step guides to early months, common concerns, problems, and weaning. Additional sections on general nutrition, sleep issues, going back to work, discipline, and fathering are useful for all breastfeeding mothers. Unfortunately the black-and-white photos are not always as clear as they should be, and the informative line-drawings are too scarce. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Attachment to and dependency on parents... is a normal, healthy aspect of childhood and not something that needs to be discouraged." This quote from Attachment Parenting: Instinctive Care for Your Baby and Young Child sums up the attitude behind the growing shift in many Western cultures toward a labor-intensive but arguably more rewarding, effective, and "natural" way to raise children. This philosophy, termed "Attachment Parenting" by its champion, pediatrician and father of eight Dr. William Sears (author of the popular child-care manual The Baby Book, among others), sees infants not as manipulative adversaries who must be "trained" to eat, sleep, and play when told, but as dependent yet autonomous human beings whose wants and needs are intelligible to the parent willing to listen, and who deserve to be responded to in a reasonable and sensitive manner. As with Sears's books, there are no plans or schedules here, no specific prescriptions for what to do with your child. Techniques to facilitate connection and communication are outlined, but mostly the book is an exhortation to listen and to trust yourself, and to trust your child's ability to convey to you what he or she needs.

Information is provided in a well-organized format that parents will find useful. Common questions regarding some of Attachment Parenting's less orthodox tenets are answered, and each section of the book provides lengthy reading and resource lists, Web sites, and e-mail addresses. This book also provides a fairly broad discussion of how working parents can incorporate such a "high-touch" style of care into their busy schedules. The authors are sometimes painfully straightforward about the cost-benefit analysis parents must go through when deciding to work outside the home, but they do not patronize working parents by glossing over this difficult decision. They show how Attachment Parenting can be especially beneficial to these families and give advice on choosing child care, breastfeeding after returning to work, and the techniques for creating a breastfeeding-friendly workplace.

Given the overwhelming cultural paradigms that parents must resist if they are going to adopt this compassionate methodology, the book's sometimes defensive tone can be at least partially excused. As a whole, parents will find this a good overview of some compelling arguments for Attachment Parenting and a wonderful resource for delving deeper into the issues it addresses. How much of it they choose to integrate into their lives is, as the book emphasizes, their decision to make, with their baby. --Katherine Ferguson ... Read more

Baby Sling

Editorial Review

Wear your baby?! Dr. William Sears, noted pediatrician andauthor (with his wife Martha, a registered nurse) of child-care books, including The Baby Book and Parenting the Fussy Baby, recommends it highly. His research reveals that parents who "wear" theirbabies experience a deep bonding with them; babies cry less when comfortedby the close movement, touch, smell, and sound of a loved one; and suchbabies spend more time in a state of "quiet alertness," which is the optimalstate for learning. Designed by Dr. Sears to foster the physical and emotionalcloseness of "attachment parenting," the Babysling Cradle lets you carry yourbaby (up to 20 pounds) in comfort and safety. The fabric sling with itsextra-padded elastic railing nestles baby in a natural position. Yourwarmth and touch do the rest. Four positions (cradle, snuggle, kangaroo, andhip straddle) accommodate baby and the situation--from nursing to shopping. The Babysling Cradle comes with an instruction booklet. --Ava Natov ... Editorial Review

Sony's DFS601 CD Walkman screams "excitement," from its snazzy S2 Sports design to its ergonomic joystick operation and great sound. Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology and a three-way control key on the grip together permit use while jogging or participating in other activities, while a supplied hand strap makes it easier to carry. Keep it moving in style with the DFS601
The DFS601 puts the best of the broadcast world at your fingertips, too, with its FM/AM/TV/weather-band digital tuner. You can even call up stations directly by their frequencies. Sony's Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks--up to 10 times faster than conventional systems.

The player delivers 40 hours of playback on two AA batteries (not included) bolstered by Sony's two-position automatic volume limiter system (AVLS), which conserves batteries and guards hearing by capping listening level. This player supports optional Sony Nickel Cadmium NC-WMAA rechargeable batteries or optional Nickel Metal Hydride NH-WM2AA rechargeable batteries, offering great savings and convenience over replaceable batteries.
