The Extraterrestrial Encyclopedia: An Alphabetical Reference to All Life in the Universe Paperback (06 June, 2000) list price: $21.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If there's anyone not interested in the possibility of life on other planets, they must keep to themselves. Along with "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?" "Am I alone?" ranks as one of the classic Big Questions asked by all curious minds. Now comes the first detailed reference book covering the search for an answer: The Extraterrestrial Encyclopedia by astrobiologist David Darling. More than 2,000 entries define and explain conceptual, fictional, theoretical, and technical thinking about exobiology, copiously referenced and cross-indexed for easy searching and browsing. Start with SETI (why not?) and after poring over the eight-page entry, you'll find yourself trying to decide whether to check out SERENDIP, Iosef Shklovskii, or the Arecibo radio telescope next. Darling's choice of entries is telling--far from just a dry assortment of biographies and dates, you'll find 2001: A Space Odyssey, the ancient Greek philosopher Xenophanes, and hydrothermal vents explored as they relate to the Big Question. Though the book has all the facts you'd need for a hundred term papers, it also acknowledges the strong cross-currents running between scientific and pop cultures, which makes for entertaining and sometimes surprising reading. (Who knew that so many serious astrophysicists wrote science fiction?) The truth may or may not be out there, but The Extraterrestrial Encyclopedia will keep us current on the search. --Rob Lightner ... Read more Isbn: 081293248X |

Sony eMarker Electronics list price: $29.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review While driving or jogging and listening to the radio, you'll never againhave to ask, "What's that song?" or "Who's that artist?" Thanks to the SonyeMarker--which is small enough to hang on your key chain--you can bookmark thesong and look it up at your leisure on your PC. To set up the eMarker, we inserted the included CR2025 battery into the unit, connected its USB cradle to our PC, and visited the eMarker.com Web site todownload and install the driver software. Then we inserted the eMarker into itscradle and followed the onscreen instructions to register the unit for the freeeMarker service (a process that included checking local coverage and listing ourfavorite radio stations). The entire setup process took only a couple ofminutes. This sounds rather complicated, until you remind yourself that the eMarker islittle more than a digital clock. When you press the eMarker's button--the onlycontrol on the unit--you aren't actually saving information from the radio, justrecording a timestamp. To determine the song information, you'll need to insertthe eMarker into its cradle and connect to the eMarker Web site (a process verymuch analogous to PDA synchronization). The eMarker site then displays playlistinformation from the available radio stations in your area. (Playlistinformation is provided by Broadcast Data Systems, which covers about 1,100radio stations across the country. To check whether stations in your area arecovered, visit www.emarker.com/coverage/index.jhtml.) In our tests of the eMarker, we listened to a variety of pop, rock, and countrystations (classical, jazz, college radio, and AM stations are not yet included)and pressed the bookmark button upon hearing songs of interest. (Unfortunately, you can only bookmark up to 10 songs at a time.) Later, we connected to our PCand the eMarker Web site, and our PC displayed various choices on screen thatintelligently corresponded to songs we might have bookmarked. Thanks toeMarker's well-designed Web site, with a few mouse clicks we were able to listento audio clips, view information about the songs' artists, and even visit onlineretailers where we could purchase the CD. Note that the eMarker now works with both Windows-based PCs and Macs with USB connectivity. If you enjoy pop music and would like some help in recognizing the songs andartists that rock your world, the small, easy-to-use Sony eMarker is aninexpensive and fun gadget to connect you to your music. Bushnell Yardage Pro 600 Laser Rangefinder Electronics list price: $299.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Perfect for use on the golf range, out in the field, or on a lake, theBushnell Yardage Pro 600 Laser Rangefinder is a lightweight andcompact 4x monocular that accurately measures distances from 21 to 600yards away. The rangefinder is made of durable black plastic with arubberized gripping area, making it easy to hold. To measure adistance, simply put one eye up to the monocular, aim at a target, press and release the fire button on top of the instrument, and waitfor the reading to be displayed inside on the LCD. Your target must beat least 21 yards away or you will get no reading. There are five different targeting modes easily set by pressing a modebutton also located on top of the rangefinder. The five modes are: 1)standard, for normal conditions; 2) scan, for moving targets; 3)reflective, for highly reflective targets; 4) rain, for readingsduring inclement weather; and 5) zip thru, exclusively for targetsmore than 115 yards away. Most of the time you will probably just wantto use the standard setting. Infrared energy pulses are emitted from the Yardage Pro 600 when thefire button is pressed. A high-speed clock measures the time it takesthe energy pulses to travel from the rangefinder to the target andback. Using this information, sophisticated circuitry inside the unitinstantaneously calculates the distance to the target. The infraredenergy pulses are eye safe. The color, surface finish, size and shapeof the target all effect reflectivity and range. Brighter colors likered or shinier surfaces on targets allow for a greater range. Lightingconditions and angle to the target can also effect the range. The Yardage Pro 600 can be set to measure distances in yards ormeters. The internal display gives you the distance measurement, indicates when the battery is low, and even rates the quality orreflective level of the target, which helps you decide whetherto switch targeting modes. It uses a 9-volt alkaline battery (notincluded). A sporty, form-fitting neoprene case with a shoulder strapis included in the box. ... Read more Features Asin: B00004ZCMD |

Porter-Cable 881XXX19.2-Volt Flashlight Tools & Hardware list price: $40.31 -- our price: $34.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The best reason to include this Porter-Cable 19.2-volt flashlight in your toolbox is simply the convenience of being able to run it off your other Porter-Cable 19.2-volt batteries. It's easy to switch in the battery just when you need it, and without the battery, the unit is very lightweight and takes up little space. But it does provide plenty of illumination when and where you need it most, and it's heavy enough to sit upright on its battery so you can aim it and use it hands free. It has a 110-degree swiveling head and heavy-duty xenon bulb and comes with an extra bulb. Please note that a battery is not included with this model. --Jonathon Tudor ... Contact Audio CD (18 April, 2000) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $16.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review German trance-techno maven Sven Vath's follow-up to 1998's Fusion continues his abandonment of the impenetrable, quasiclassical themes that have marred other elements of his long career, instead putting to use his diverse talents in the genre. A blend of minimalist, Kraftwerkesque electro-cabaret and more straight-ahead techno, the record makes frequent use of Vath's voice, filtering it through all manner of bizarre effects and electronic manipulations. It can be unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally?) humorous at times, like in "Apricot," which threatens to become a toothless version of a forgotten Einstürzende Neubauten song before flowering into a melodious second half. Other times, like in the spare, "robot-pop" keyboard rhythms of "Pathfinder," it's effective as an eerie counterpoint to the song's sneaky, slowly building momentum. Meanwhile, the driving, seedy disco beats of songs like "Dein Schweiss (Your Sweat)" and "Once More..." would sound at home in the dirtiest of Berlin's underground nightclubs, circa 1978. As long as Vath keeps us off balance, the record displays a unique sense of imagination that more techno artists could stand to have in their arsenal. --Matthew Cooke ... Read more Asin: B00004SSEQ |
