The problem is, I bought the remote control unit from the Sony store in Gaffney, SC. The remote control unit is REQUIRED if you want to use the console as a DVD player. It just will not work any other way. Several weeks after Christmas, the whole thing just quits working. I called Sony and they told me that the remote control unit (that I bought from the Sony store) caused the console to break and they would not cover the cost of fixing it. They said my warranty was VOID! The reason? Because I used an unsupported device to control the DVD player. First of all, I bought the remote control unit from Sony. Second of all, the package had a BIG PS2 logo on it. Third, the Sony sales person told me that I had to buy that unit in order to use the DVD player. And last, there was no other remote unit offered in any store, anywhere! To make matters worse... When I called Sony, the first thing question they asked was if I used a remote control device with the system. They knew that this was a problem and they sold me the unit anyway. So, if you want to invest (dollar amount) in a game system this Christmas, don't buy Sony or you might wide up with a broken pile of (stuff) that you can't even sell on Ebay. The games were not even that great anyway. Go to Media Play and try the new X-Box. The games are much better. And for (less), you get the complete package. Two game pads, three games, a carrying case, everything. And Microsoft backs it. When have you ever had a problem with Microsoft supporting their products? Never! Or if you have a problem with Microsoft, get the new Nintendo system. Just don't buy Sony. Never buy Sony!
I'm sorry to say, being a PSX fan, that PS2's poptential as one of the greatest and most versitle programable consoles will never be seen.Nintendo has been in the game too long and will always come out a winner or at least making it to the playoffs every season, and with all my hope the Xbox won't see a second season.Though i'm afraid gates could still pop money into it out of his own pocket to keep it going for the next few decades. Bottom line: the only reason i got the PS2 is for the Final Fantasy games. That's the only reason. But what i don't understand is why all of a sudden people are hating the PS2.It's still a great machine and it will still have some killer games coming out for it.Half-life for starters (the best PC game action ever made with the greatest mods).Bien sur, FFx's Metal Gear Solid 2.So really, if you want a powerful gaming system then you'll go buy Area 51 by Alienware and grab Return to Wolf, Counter Strike, Medal o'Honor2, Jedi Outcast. ... Glacier Game Boy Advance Mario Xtreme Game Pack Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review To help you start your Game Boy Advance collection, we've created this special bundle, which includes the games Super Mario Advance and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, along with selected accessories. Players will perform hundreds of complicated tricks for points while incorporating environmental obstacles into their acts in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. In Super Mario Advance, players take the swashbuckling plumber and his compatriots Luigi, Peach, and Toad on a nostalgic side-scrolling adventure through a richly colored fantasyland. We've also included a PowerPak to help you save on batteries, a Worm Light Advance to help you play through low-light situations, and a Game Boy holster so you can keep your machine at the ready. The Game Boy platform (which includes the original unit, the Game Boy Pocket, and the Game Boy Color) came to market when most video game consoles had a life expectancy of just a few years. More than a decade later, the system is still going strong. How did the Game Boy successfully compete--and in some cases bury--an onslaught of faster, more powerful handheld and home console systems? Let us count the ways: affordability; a huge library of games that consistently made the most of the hardware's limitations; smart power management that extended battery life; and uncluttered controls. But perhaps it was the system's ultra-portable design that allowed devotees to play video games around their schedules, thus making it a must-have system for kids and adults alike. Now the Game Boy Advance (or GBA, as it's already being called) comes to us with power that would have been unthinkable back in the day. The portable's 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen, and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying beeps and boops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitized stereo sound. The extra processing muscle also means you can even network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun off of one shared cartridge. Only two Game Boy Color units could link together, and each unit required a copy of the game. What's not being replaced, however, is the wide selection of Game Boy games. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play its own line of colorful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Army Men Advance, High Heat Major League Baseball 2002, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2--as well as all of the monochrome and color games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems (nearly 500 in total). Players can view the older games in their smaller, originally square dimensions, or, with the touch of the shoulder button, expand the game to fit the GBA's larger screen. We tried enlarging the screen on a Game Boy Color edition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and found that Mr. Hawk was much easier to see. When you first pick up the system, you'll be amazed how lightweight it is. At fewer than 5 ounces and a little larger than a deck of playing cards, the system easily fits into a shirt pocket without any sag. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands. The former design too often pushed the left and right thumb knuckles together during gameplay. The new layout should be comfortable for all ages, and the center screen orientation makes it easy to see. Game Boy Color owners will find the GBA's larger screen somewhat darker than they're used to, but that's because the screen is outfitted with antiglare technology. Like the old Game Boy Color, the color LCD is not backlit, so you need pretty good light to play by. Unlike that system, though, you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the hot-spot reflection of the light bulb in your screen. But you'll also notice the graphics. Sporting what's basically a redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to throwing a touchdown pass to crawling through a dungeon. Some might argue that Nintendo could have tried to put even more power into this Game Boy Advance. After all, the 32-bit video game had its heyday more than five years ago. Perhaps, but after handling this new handheld, we're inclined to think that Nintendo wisely struck a balance between size, price, and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, we think the Game Boy Advance is here to stay, and we're glad. --Porter B. Hall Unit Specifications

I would also like to point out that the screen is a bit darker and it does not glare much. In other words yes you can see what your doing. AH yes i bet that all of you are wondering about the battery life and of course the sound. First let me start off talking a bit about the battery. Two AA batteries are required to play GBA but the good thing is that the play time is extended by 5 more hours. That makes 15 hours of non-stop fun. Now lets talk about the sound! The sound is greatly improved but, for example in super mario advance the characters voices get extremely annoying Now lets talk about the games. Tony Hawk 2 has the best graphics out of all the games released so far but i would like to add that it is a little bit hard to control.E3 has done a grat job with this game Supa Mario Advace- you know i actually expected this game to be something new but instead Nintendo really dissapointed me.The game has two original games, Super Mario and Super Mario bros. 2 which are two good games.Well thats about it.Isnt this review pretty good for a 13 year older who only sits around playing gba and computer games!PS sergey berig

Nascar Racing 4 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (12 February, 2001) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review At last, the prayers of NASCAR Racing 3 fans have beenanswered. Its sequel, NASCAR Racing 4, comes with theoutstanding physics model hard-core NASCAR fans have been clamoringfor, along with all 21 tracks from the 2000 Winston Cup season and carsfrom all four NASCAR manufacturers. It's the most complete NASCARsimulation to date, and the realistic physics add a new dimension tothe gameplay. Proper weight transfer is now imperative, and adjustmentsmade to spoilers, shocks, and other components of the car becomeimmediately evident on the track as the car reacts accordingly. With the right processor and video card, NASCAR Racing 4 cangenerate visuals that are difficult to distinguish from TV broadcasts.Smoke from burnouts and collisions can hang in the air for minutes, andthe new physics model means cars hunker down on their shocks whilebraking and turning. The tracks are all cracked and pitted, with tiremarks and oil trails slowly building up on the standard racing lines. The cars feature immaculate paint jobs that are fully customizableusing the included painting tools. Those shiny cars can quickly lose their luster thanks to the new damagemodel. Minor bumps and scrapes can take the paint off, while majoraltercations can leave you with bent wheels, a crumpled hood thatobscures your vision, or any of a million other problems. The car'shandling changes based on the damage it has suffered, sometimes pullingso violently to the right or left that racing becomes impossible. Anadded effect of the new physics model is that cars can finally getairborne, making wrecks more realistic than any seen in a NASCARsimulation. The single-player mode offers computer-controlled opponents that driverealistically, although they can be too aggressive if you're on a linethey want. It's much more fun to build some skill in the single-playergame and then migrate to online play, where drivers from around theworld perpetually challenge one another. NASCAR Racing 4 isn'tperfect at this point, but a few patches should correct what minorflaws it has, and it still stands as the best NASCAR simulation evercreated. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

I took the wheel out and mounted it to the lip of my computer desk using the two screw down plastic clamps provided underneath the wheel. I thought the clamps looked flimsy, and would probably break easily! However, I have been playing for days now and the wheel is completely stable and does not move nor suffer from "plastic flex"! Just make sure you do _not_ overtighten them when you screw them down! Just get them secure, they WILL hold if you do it properly. I find the wheel to be the perfect size for my desk, I can keep it attached and use my keyboard and mouse without any problems at all. Next, I positioned the foot pedals on the floor. My desk has a bottom board, and I put the foot pedals up against it so they won't slide. They have a jack similar to a telephone, and it plugs directly into the righthand side of the wheel. The A/C adapter plugs in next to the phone-jack type port for the pedals, and is very lightweight! Then, I started up my computer and installed the software. You put the disk in, and it comes up with a menu that lets you install it. If you already have another Logitech device, such as a Wingman joystick, then you don't need to install the software! It uses the same stuff! Once the software is installed, you simply plug the USB connector into your computer, and POOF! The system will immediately make any changes it has to, and you can start using your wheel! I would strongly suggest a calibration before use. The wheel and pedals are very durable, and work flawlessly. The paddle shifters are easy to reach and use! I find the best game to use this wheel with is Need for Speed: Underground. They make a great combo. It takes a slight breaking in period to get used to using a wheel. While it makes the game very realistic, remember that it is still up to the game programmers to provide good game physics for using it! I've also played with a Microsoft Force Feedback wheel at a friend's house, and I like this Logitech a lot better!

Twisted Metal: Black Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (22 June, 2001) list price: $49.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review While the Twisted Metal line of vehicular combat games has had unevenepisodes, the developers at Incog have thankfully brought the series back inblack, and it has never been better. Twisted Metal: Black pushes theenvelope in terms of graphics, gameplay, and content. It's a tremendous game, but parents should keep in mind that it carries a Mature rating from ESRB andits content may be unsuitable for younger players. Gamers old enough to handleit will be treated to a must-have game for the PlayStation2. Twisted Metal: Black is one of the best-looking games on the market. Thecharacter design, animations, particle effects, and lighting effects are alltopnotch, yet the game still runs at a speedy frame rate--even in multiplayermodes. The game isn't all about looks though, as gameplay is very deep andcontains several modes. You'll want to play single-player story mode severaltimes just to see how the game ends for its numerous compelling characters. Eachcharacter has a story line that's simple yet captivating. More importantly, eachof the characters' vehicles has meaningful differences, so players are bound tofind a rig that fits their playing styles. With its slick gameplay, interesting characters, wide variety of modes, andbreathtaking graphics, Twisted Metal: Black is the best vehicular combatgame yet, and, so far, the best PlayStation2 game of the year. --Raymond M.Padilla Pros:

Gran Turismo 3: A Spec Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (13 July, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.88 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The PlayStation2 takes the Gran Turismo franchise to new heights in thethird edition of the venerable racing series. The graphics are sure to grabyou--the cars and tracks are awe inspiring, and there are some incredible lightingeffects. This game is much more than eye candy, though. The gameplay in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is the same as its predecessors;fans of the previous games will feel right at home, while newcomers will be ableto pick things up easily. There are more than 150 cars from which to choose, andplenty of tracks upon which to race them. Arcade mode works well for a quickfix, while simulation mode provides outstanding replay value. The sound effectsare impressive--each engine has a unique sound, and tire screeches fromdifferent cars sound noticeably different. The soundtrack is a good mix oforiginal compositions and a wide variety of recording artists, including MotleyCrue, Raekwon, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg. One minor flaw with the game is its relatively predictable artificialintelligence. Computer-controlled cars follow distinct lines, and you'll be ableto pick up the patterns after a few races. Considering how far the graphics havecome since the original Gran Turismo, it's disappointing that the AIhasn't progressed similarly. Despite this, GT3 remains an outstandinggame. Few games offer its combination of high quality and immense variety.--Raymond M. Padilla Pros:

ATV Off Road Fury Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (09 February, 2001) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $19.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Imagine insane jumps, wild off-road courses, and crazy stuntsthat could only be performed in the make-believe world of video games.Add to that the power of the PlayStation2 system, and you have all theingredients of an arcade classic racing title on the PS2. The physics in ATV Offroad Fury are absolutely incredible.Drivers and ATVs react accordingly as they hit the ground, and otherriders need to be wary when someone takes a wipeout--one fall on thesetight courses can send a shockwave of collisions through the pack. The game provides arcade-style controls, which fit perfectly with thebest aspects of the game. ATV Offroad Fury is one game that isbest played with friends, as the artificial intelligence isunrealistically consistent. If you mess up, computer-controlled ridersslow down to offer you a chance to get back into things. It does notseem to matter how poorly a player does for the first three laps of afive-lap race. If no mistakes are made in the final two laps, thecomputer opponents are easily overtaken. The tracks are separated into three distinct groups: indoors, outdoors, and freestyle. The indoor tracks are fairly similar, as they are thesame type of supercross tracks that you would see in a motocross game. The outdoor tracks, however, show much more variety in their terrainsand backgrounds. From lush forests to harsh deserts all the way tosnow-covered tundra, every track provides a different experience. Thegame's sound is merely decent; hearing those high-pitched engines atfull throttle for too long begins to sound like you are being chased bya pack of killer bees. Overall, ATV is a solid game that most everyone will want totry. The multiplayer mode really makes for a great party game, not onlyfor its earnest competitiveness, but also for the entertainment valueof the crashes and lunatic jumps and stunts. --Todd Mowatt Pros:
