    Editorial Review

Garmin's eTrex Venture GPS receiver offers a host of track- and path-related programs and is surprisingly easy to use. Its size and design make it comfortable to use one-handed, and its automatic tracking feature and ability to download maps from optional CD-ROMs make it an excellent navigation tool.

Roughly the size and shape of a cell phone, the Venture has six buttons that are easily accessible by thumb and forefinger. The Power, Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Find buttons are along the side, with the big-daddy navigation button (a directional click-button akin to a thumb-operated joystick) on the front above the screen. The side buttons are stiff enough that it's nearly impossible to accidentally push one. However, we found the navigation button to be a bit too stiff, which caused us several errors in entering waypoints.

Text was very easy to read--highlights are discernible and menu bars and clickable objects are well-defined. The unit also has an excellent backlight, which illuminates the whole screen with a white light, giving excellent contrast and viewing capability at night.

The Venture's interface is split into five different pages, each providing different functions. The main menu page gives you access to your saved routes and tracks, as well as setup for using WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception, unit measurement, time, and display. These are all quickly rotated through with the click of the Page button on the right-hand side of the unit.

The map page displays the basemap included with the Venture, and for outdoor excursions it provides all the basics you'll need. It automatically tracks your movements and you can save individual tracks for later viewing. The map is zoomable from 500 miles to 20 feet depending on your preferences. You can place waypoints and places of interest on the map and name and change the icons of each to create your own personalized maps. If you decide you want to go somewhere, press the Find button and you'll get quick access to waypoints, your favorites list, and nearby cities.

The Venture features 1 MB of memory for downloading points-of-interest data--including lodging, business services, banks, and more--from optional CD-ROMs via the included PC cable. Unfortunately, for more detailed mapping you'll need to look to the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista, both of which have larger memory capacities and the ability to download detailed maps.

Reception was, of course, best outside on a clear day, but the Venture retained most of its functionality under limited cover like small buildings or thick trees.

All in all, the Garmin eTrex Venture is a nifty little GPS tool and is ready to roll for your outdoor adventure. However, if you're looking to use more detailed map data with your GPS, the Garmin eTrex Vista or Legend would be a better choice. --Matt Deffer

4-0 out of 5 stars Great GPS receiver for basic hiking and backpacking.
I returned a Cobra GPS 100 and upgraded to the eTrex Venture for the extra money. What a difference only a few dollars more can make! this is my first GPS unit ever, and I had no problems picking everything up within a day.

For starters, it only took about two minutes to locate a satellite for the first time (supposed to take up to five) and averages about 30 seconds to locate one in general. The screen resolution is easy to read and the options for customizing the map make it even easier if you have trouble reading small text. The waypoint markers are easy to define and edit. The compass seems to be very quick in picking up your movements. Almost everything is customizable giving you endless options for your specific use for the GPS unit. The unit is comfortable in the hand, although some of the buttons are a little stiff at first.

My satellite reception is excellent. I took it hiking in 40°F rain and hail (obviously very overcast) and only lost reception once while walking under heavy tree cover. On the way home I placed it on the dashboard and it tracked me 33 miles home without losing reception once. This was in 500 ft visibility fog on a one lane curvy mountain road. This unit definitely gets the job done.

My only gripes are there's no beep or sound when it loses reception and you have to press enter to acknowledge you have lost reception, thus it begins tracking you again. So if you hike by turning the unit on and placing it in your backpack, or even on your belt, you could have lost reception and not known it, and because you haven't acknowledged the unit, it's not tracking you anymore (as far as I can tell).

Other than that, this unit works perfect for getting you in and out of areas where there's no trails and finding that perfect spot to spend the night or fish and hunt.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK, or maybe a bit less than that.
This was a mild disappointment. It is the second Garmin product that fails me, I also owned a Pilot II, whose firmware at some point lost its marbles, and now it displays only some pages and refuses to get a GPS fix.

The Venture had, almost from the beginning, a problem with the display, which flickered and became alternatively all black or white, or lost some horizontal lines, creating a nice "blinds" effect.

The problem normally went away by moderate slapping. But it is not a nice start.

Second point: the battery contacts are sub-quality, you just need to shake the unit a little and the electrodes lose contact with the battery, causing the unit to switch off.

Third: when the memory is fairly full, the operating system goes in overload mode, sometimes it does not manage to acquire the user input, and you find yourself trying to use the buttons without actually managing to do nothing. Erase the memory and the problem disappears.

Four: a few leaves overhead and you lose the fix, the sensitivity and selectivity is not great.

Maybe I had a bad firmware, who knows, but I don't want to change my firmware every month, I expect the original firmware to be OK for a while.

I just bought a Magellan, I'm curious to see if it's better or worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Used for both kayaking and geocaching
I purchased the Garmin Venture a year ago.I have used it on several 20 mile kayaking trips down a river and this past April used it for a 135 mile river trip.It was extremely accurate and we not only knew where we were, but how far it was to the next landing or landmark.

It did take some time to learn how to operate the unit. The instructions were not as clear as I would have liked but trial and error is a great teacher.I had a friend who got me interested in geocaching and that really helped me learn how to use all of the Venture's features. It is easy to upgrade from the Garmin website and to also download maps from the Mapsource CD-ROM's.It is kind of like learning to use a computer.Don't be afraid to try something. You won't hurt it.

I usually average 18+ hours on a pair of batteries.I also purchased a power cord so that I could use it in my vehicle.I just plug it in and wedge the GPS between the windshield and dashboard and follow the arrow to the next geocache.

I have been impressed with the toughness of this unit.I have dunked it in the river, dropped it, and generally given it a rough time.I would recommend this to someone who is interested in a GPS but does not want to invest a lot of money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor 2-way-radio choice
I bought a pair after losing an older T5200 (also from Motorola) which is not manufactured anymore. I figured that the new & more expensive model (which also has 1 Watt compared to 1/2 watt of the T5200) should work as good or better.

I was very disapoointed. Very poor sound quality. Audio is not clear and in many cases has breaks. I still have one T5200 left (I lost 1 out of 2) - eveyone in my family wants to use the older unit as the new T5820 does not perform. Plus, I paid for the T5200 half of what I paid for thr T5820...

I recommend not to buy this product. Go for the new cheaper & better T5720 (1 Watt as well, compact, great sound quality. The only limitation - no vibration alert. See my review on it).

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor speaker performance
The quality of voice coming from the speakers is very poor. You can hardly understand the person talking to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solution for 'muffled' reception
To those who have problems with getting clear reception:

If you normally set you volume control to max, try turning it down a little (or more) if your reception sounds muffled.

I've tried this several times within city transmission and it helps alot with removing the muffled reception some users have reported (especially those who have purchased sets with rechargeable nicad batteries).

I think the volume control and speaker interface has not been designed well for max vol transmissions.(Note that new T5620, T5720 and T5920 have sound enhacing improvements for clearer voice transmissions, check motorola site for specs and launch dates)

    Reason I like this set:
The 1.0 watt transmitter helps increase talking distance in built up areas as opposed to 0.5 watt frs radio sets. Price was a good deal with rebate. ... ... Read more

The economical Bushnell 10x25 black compact PowerView FRP binoculars deliver 10x magnification and offer a field of view of 300 feet at 1,000 yards. They fit easily in your jacket pocket and weigh only 8.5 ounces. These binoculars are solid and well made--typical Bushnell quality--with black rubber armoring over metal construction. They feature a center focus system, so focusing is simple and fast. The focus knob moves smoothly with a certain amount of tension and didn't slip when we used it. For those who wear eyeglasses, the eyepieces are fitted with rubber roll-down eyecups, helping to bring your eyes closer to the lens. These compact binoculars are able performers in a number of indoor/outdoor settings--essentially anywhere compact size is advantageous. 4-0 out of 5 stars NICE SIZE FOR LADIES
These are just the right size for ladies, specially for distance viewing. My husband cant get on with them because with the small eyepieces he cant rest them against his brow to steady them - they float- and go out of focus. For us with smaller eyesockets they sit very nicely and the lenses are very clear. The clarity and detail being just as good as my bigger much more expensive pair. Very light and handy you can just keep them in your pocket .

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Difficult to focus even when brand new. Jostle it too much and you'll have to start squinting even more when you use them. In all honesty, however, I didn't expect much from a $17 pair of binoculars.

    1-0 out of 5 stars i couldn't believe it

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Digital Cameras And High-Drain Electronics
With a digital camera, rechargeable batteries are a must for those who take a lot of picture. These batteries didn't take as long to charge or recharge as other brands I have tested, and lasted almost twice as long on one charge as the expensive "Max-Powered" throw-away alkaline batteries I've bought as back ups.I am very happy with this Kodak product and recommend these rechargeable batteries to anyone with a digital camera or other high-drain electronics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Perform Well For Me
    Not impressed.
I used these for my digital camera (Casio QV-R40).With flash and LCD on I got an average of 24 pics before the battery ran out (once it was 27 - but that was only once).
With the Sanyo batteries that came with the camera I was getting over 50 per charge (sometimes more)(also with the flash and lcd on)

They are cheap though - and if you don't mind the inconvenience of re-charging they are a good "deal".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent rechargeables
Remember that most batteries in this class share the same characteristics, that of a nice even performance followed by a sudden drop off.Having said that these are powerful batteries that power my Fuji digital camera through at least 200 shots a charge, including review of pictures, and plenty of messing around "in camera" to get the perfect shots.

I have 2 sets and am buying another 2 because I know that I have already saved a bundle on these batteries.Lets see.Go through an average 8 batteries a week...thats $6 for Duracell or Energizer. These rechargeables pay for themselves really quickly.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Timer controlled Charger
These type of charger seems to control the charging time by a timer that starts when you plug into power outlet. If you do not unplug it first before next use it will not restart charging. Very low tech if that is the case, and Kodak (or Energizer) may not want you to know it. I have one of these.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good little inexpensive charger
I have used the K200 charger for about a year with good results. However, it comes with an inadequate user's guide, and I haven't found any additional information on Kodak's site. The "auto-off" timer would seem to indicate that batteries are protected from overcharging. However, the unit does heat up when plugged in, and the user's guide states that it should be unplugged after 8 hours. If that's the case, it should include a built-in beeper! Several times, I've left it plugged in for a couple days, with no apparent harm to batteries or charger.

3-0 out of 5 stars More info!
I have the K200 charger but can find little tech. info. on it. Do the green lights indicate a charged, or a discharged condition? Some of the reviews/descriptions of this charger make it sound as if it will charge regular or alkaline AA and AAA batteries. I don't know much about batteries, but I'm pretty sure they have to be Ni-MH or Ni-CD batteries (size AA or AAA) to be rechargable. Attempting to recharge regular or alkaline batteries might be hazardous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Regardless of other reviews, this is a winner
I received the case yesterday and took it on a hike in pretty heavy woods today.I got fine reception. And you can manipulate the controls OK.Screen covered by plastic to protect but that was not a problem.
FYI-I ordered from Amazon and used their free shipping option. They bluffed and said 7 to 9 days. I said OK.I actually recieved the order by UPS in 23, yes 23 hours, after placing order!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost a star because I don't use it exactly as intended.
I got this holder mainly because I wanted to be able to keep my GPSr handy wile hiking, but out or the way and still recieveing. Here is the deal, I geocache, and I do it quite often. When I used to go out on longer hikes I would loop the leash on my GPSr around the strap on my pack, and then tuck my GPSr under the strap on my sholder where I couldn't see it, but it could see the sky, all that got me was a sore sholder and a GPSr dangeling by my waste not recieveing. Now with the holster I leash the holster to my pack, and clip the holster to my pack strar at about mid chest. I can see what I need to through the window of the holster, and if I need more detail I just pull the reciever out so I can see the screen better. This set up keeps my reciever close at hand, out of the way and recieveing when I don't need to see it, and protected from scratches (if you are a cacher, you know your GPSr has lots of scratches). As for the window that everyone complains about, I see it this way, I would rather have to take out my GPSr to read it better than have to replace my GPS because the window on it has gouges in it. Look at this holster as insurance with the benifit of keeping the GPS out of the way and it is a great bargain. Untill someone offers tore up GPS insurance this is the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Garmin Case!!
For the price that you pay on this case, it's great. A little glare isn't going to get you lost in the mountains. The material feels good and durable. If you have a eTrex this is a great case to have. ... Read more

Compaq iPAQ 3835 Color Pocket PC
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

For many, Compaq's iPAQs were the pick of the first round of Pocket PC releases. Now that Microsoft has released a new version of its Pocket PC operating system (Pocket PC 2002), the company's previous hardware partners have all updated their products and some new players have joined in. The net result is greater competition--so how does Compaq fare?

The new range of iPAQ is available in two versions. The iPAQ 3765 is much like the popular 3635 model, but has the new OS on board. The iPAQ 3835, our review unit, is similar in body, but adds a few extra features.

The 3835 is driven by Intel's fast StrongARM processor, which runs at 206 MHz, and is outfitted with a healthy 64 MB RAM. The Pocket PC 2002 OS itself is stored on the 32 MB flash ROM, so you should be able to easily install OS updates as they come along. The screen quality is superb and can show over 65,000 colors--a greater color depth than the 3765.

Most hardware expansion is provided via an optional CompactFlash expansion jacket, with CF cards and modules from previous iPAQs largely compatible with the iPAQ 3835. Note, however, that this does not carry through to hardware add-ons that use the docking port (such as keyboards), as the connector on the 3835 is different than on the 3635 or 3765.

Additionally, there is now a built-in expansion slot onboard that enables you to add both software and hardware to the iPAQ without the need for the CF expansion jacket. This slot is compatible with both Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory cards.

The iPAQ's design and build quality are superb; this is still the best-looking Pocket PC around. The docking station is both USB and serial--this "one size fits all" approach is intelligent and user friendly. Data input has also been improved, including the ability to register more than one button press at a time, making speedy gaming possible as some light relief from all the serious work you can set the device to.

Overall, Compaq's new iPAQ 3835 beats the rest for looks and performance. The built-in SD/MMC expansion card slot is a plus, and the iPAQ becomes an even more powerful productivity machine with the addition of the optional CompactFlash jacket. --Sandra Vogel

    Pros:

    • Expansion card slot for SD and MMC cards
    • Fast processor and good amount of onboard memory

    • Latest Microsoft operating system--Pocket PC 2002

5-0 out of 5 stars I've Had This For Over A Year And I Still Love It!!!
I looked online for hours to find an affordable PDA that would allow me to do everything I wanted.I'm a full time college student and I find I can take notes, set up appointments and have my schedule on demand.I have my tasks organized and get more accomplished.I can also pull up phone numbers and email addresses of friends, teachers, and even restaurants when my friends and I order out.Plus I can play games while waiting for my next class to start. It also synchronizes perfectly with my desktop computer's version of Microsoft Outlook.I can download maps to my PDA for trips with step-by-step driving directions. The PDA is light and I can carry it in my purse all the time without it weighing me down. The unit has held up great for the year and few months I've had it.I know that newer systems have come out since I bought this back in November of 2002, but if you find a new or used version of this PDA I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.I also bought, and would recommend, a zippered holder that is waterproof (I spill things on my nightstand a lot.)It also helps protect the unit if you drop it.The only other thing you might want is to buy the memory expansion card. It's only about $35 and it triples your memory. You'll find that you can fill up your memory a lot faster than you think. (I buy too many e-books from Amazon!) I really think this is a good PDA for a student or anyone else and I take mine with me everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business PDA Tool I have used
I have owned Several Palm Based PDs and one Palm Smart Phone. This is by far the best of the bunch.I never thought I could use a PDA as a palm comuter, but this product does it hands down.I am an oustside sales person and really need to have access to my Act Database and need to be able to access several XL files. Not only does this product provide me the access and editing tools it also allows me to print via IR to a protable printer in my car.Now my lap top stays in the trunk and my PDA travels with me.BIG Thumbs up.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm going back to a Palm!!
When I originally bought this PDA it had such great reviews and I though it would be a good replacement/upgrade for my old Palm (that never gave me any trouble by the way). I have had it for over 6 months now and I have been so unhappy with its performance. The battery life is horrible!! I travel a lot and need something that I don't need to charge twice a day. I don't play games or read books on it, so I don't use up the battery life that way. The worst thing is that unlike Palms you lose everything if your battery runs out!!!! Who ever heard of that. If you keep backing up to your computer you can restore it, but you really have to be on the ball with that, because if you don't too bad it's gone! I will admit it is a nice looking machine that has some nice features, but I just bought a new Palm because I need something I can rely on. ... Read more

The Viking 128MB Secure Digital Card, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera,64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slower than molasses--until I formatted it.
NOTE TO EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS CARD--I reformatted it in my camera and it works fine now!!
    Initially I wrote:
I was very disappointed in the shot-to-shot speed with this card (using a Minolta Xg).The Panasonic card that came with the camera, which I thought would be cheap, is THREE TIMES FASTER than this "upgrade".This card is useless to me as it cripples the camera I bought it to work in.It takes FOURTEEN SECONDS from one shot to the next with this card. With the original card, it's less than four seconds. The claim that this is a "high speed" card is dishonest. This is the slowest card I've ever used.I will throw this card away rather than curse someone else with it.

I haven't had one problem with this card at all. I'm super happy that I bought it & I had a bonus to get a rebate.. woo hoo! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Unless you've been hiding in the dark for the last few decades, you're sure to recognize this classic from Mag Instrument. The solid dependability of Mag flashlights is hard to top, which explains why the brand is so popular with police officers, security guards, and other people who can't afford to be left in the dark. This three-D-cell model is great for home use and an essential part of any home emergency kit. It shines as bright as most homeowners could ask for, and a simple twist of the head changes the beam from a spot to a luminous floodlight. Having a Mag flashlight on hand can keep an inconvenience, like a November blackout, from becoming a small disaster. It is also a great light for illuminating the woods and keeping the bears at bay on summer camping trips. The weighty feel of a Mag-Lite also offers a sense of security in the dark that other flashlights just don't have, enough to give you the confidence to confront any basement bogeyman or mountain monster. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST FLASHLIGHT OUT THERE!
In my opinion...this thing is the best.Is sturdy, heavy duty, can shine FOREVER down the dark forest path. It's rugged so you don't have to worry about it if it's bouncing around in a tool-box or dropping off the counter and hitting the kitchen floor.

I know people that have owned these for years. There is a reason why you get what you pay for, and a reason why you get your monies worth with these. They are good, solid, dependable, rugged flashlights that hold up to life's everyday uses. And as mentioned before, they shine very bright and far, not dim to a pinpoint like some big flashlights out there.I highly recommend it for yourself or for a gift for someone who could use it!Have one in your car, house, garage, shed, trailer, and travel kit. They come in handy, and for certain situations like being broke down, searching for something, or a power outage in your area, you want the best available!

I have one mounted on the wall at home just incase there is ever a blackout.

Just knowing that it`s there is great peace of mind next to the fire extinguisher.

It is a professionally modeled piece of kit with great light output and can switch from spot to flood. The flood option can illuminate a garden, great for spotting intruders.

Talking of intruders, load this baby with the 3 D cells and it makes a nifty club. Just dont tell the police I said that.

    3-0 out of 5 stars " CLUNK ! "
I've bought some Mini-Mag's before, but even though Streamlight and Pelican were coming out with these new terrific lights, I realized that dealers were hard to find, and although Maglite is the older kid on the block, they are easy to find, and it's still a great light. I bought my second 3-D size at my local "Wally Mart" and went to work the next night (I do mobile security). I've owned a 3-D size before and always found it better than anything I've ever used, aside from a super Coleman 9-V lantern. Sometimes I end up in alleys, corridors, and even my favourite, fields that are growing new but under construction houses. Still, nothing makes me feel safer (super boof on the head if under aggresion by a hoodlum) and well prepared with it's great power, both in spot and flood modes.

Here comes the bad news. I almost forgot that my other light died from the same reason this one did. I have dropped both of them a few times (clumsy me), yet was reminded that these are shock resistant. Well, on a fateful day in an office building, with new batteries too, I accidently dropped my Mag and as it hit the 'carpeted' floor, it went off. I tried to turn it back on, but after a few tries and even changing the bulb just in case it was burnt out, I realized that my Mag had expired. Terrific. The other downfall is that if you drop it and it switches off while you're in the dark, good luck finding it if you're in the woods. That happened to me once, but I ALWAYS carry a backup Mini-Mag, so I found it later (it's black, and trying to find it in the woods with dark branches around isn't easy, so it's hard to find).

Take this as good advice: buy it if you are in the woods or on softer ground-two of mine died falling onto carpets. The other thing is to at least get the "silver" or "light blue" coloured versions. At least they're easier to find in moonlight. I just got the black since the black looks best. Ah, still. Hats off to Mag. ... Read more
