1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Palm PDAs
Although this device will work on a Palm, it will perform
very, very slowly compared to other brands, e.g. SimpleTech.

Search the internet for "write performance" and SanDisk and you
will find objective evidence of this. Buy one of each brand and
you will experience it for yourself.

Example: Kinoma movies with sound in highest quality will not
play properly on SanDisk but will on SimpleTech. A collection
of 20 files totalling 15MBytes will at times take over one
    hour to load on SanDisk.

If you're putting this in a Palm PDA, don't, buy a competing
    brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Want to expand your PDA?This should do the trick...
It was inevitable...just like home PC's when they started to become so popular, we figured that 64MB was more than we could POSSIBLY need...but little did we know just how convenient technology would make the storage of memory...and now it's not unusual to find computers that can hold TERA-Bytes of memory, and PDA users are discovering that the standard 8MB's of memory just isn't enough anymore.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that I chose to spend a little more to get a Palm device that could upgrade with the expansion slot.At first I didn't think I was EVER going to fill up all
7.7MB's of available memory my Palm m125 came standard with... but I took the gamble on the off chance that one day in the distant future I just MIGHT reach the end to the memory on my trusted, and well-used PDA.Well, I reached the end...rather quickly as a matter of fact.So now we have several choices to make to fix the situation...you can choose from quite a few different expansion cards available on the market today, but in my opinion, going with the SanDisk 32MB Multi Media Card (MMC) is THE way to go.Sure, you can buy the 16MB card distributed by the Palm Company...but the SanDisk cards are MUCH cheaper... make that WAY big time less expensive. For example, I got a SanDisk 32MB card for LESS than what the Palm 16MB card costs.
Now I originally wanted the smaller 16MB card, but I figured since I went through the original memory much faster than I had anticipated, why not get an ADDITIONAL 16MB's for LESS money?

A couple of important things to think about when making this purchase:be FOREWARNED...it will take your Palm a few extra seconds to access programs on your expansion card than it would if the program was directly in the existing internal memory... but in all honesty, this is NOT the HUGE inconvenience that some reviewers would have you believe -- unless of course waiting an extra 1.5 seconds IS a big deal to you.One more thing, and what ultimately made me give this 4 stars instead of 5, is that I planned on moving practically everything on my Palm that I don't use multiple times a day over to my card...but all of the copyright protected programs will NOT allow you to copy over to the expansion card.Programs like your Address files, Date Book, Memo Pad, my QuickWord, the To Do List...which means that you can only free up just SO MUCH space on your Palm.I understand copyright situations and how many people take advantage of this, so ultimately I am not upset about it, but I must admit it frustrated me for a day or so.Other than that, this was money well spent for a great product that has given me the chance to do so much more with my PDA than I expected it to when I first bought it.How many products do you pay good money for end up doing a LOT more for you than you expected? Not many that I'm aware of.All in all, a VERY worthwhile expense -- especially if you plan on getting the most out of your hand held.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does the job well!
Does the job exactly as advertised.Note:get one of the free eBookMan add-on programs (either "Awake" or "Batgraph") so that the eBookMan will draw power from the adapter, rather than the AAA batteries, when turned off.The cord between the adapter and the USB connector for the eBookMan is generously long.

5-0 out of 5 stars This product is a must for Ebookman users.
I've had my adapter for a few days now and have no complaints to make. If you are planning to use the backlight or speaker on your Ebookman for any extended periods of time you need to get this adapter or you'll find yourself spending a fortune in batterys. The adapter is compact, light weight, and has a wonderfully long cord. : ) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Meets Needs, but False advertisement
I ordered this cable hoping that it would help with getting away from the limited use of the USB cradle due to the fact that I have a PDA case that requires velcro on the back. With the velcro, the once natural fit of the eBookman on the cradle becomes too snug and I am afraid I am going to damage the unit everytime I attach the device on. In turn, I purchased the USB cable, but the picture that Amazon shows is a long "version" of the cord. Looking closer, it looks like they just chopped off the USB cable from a cradle and showed that, being that cable is longer. In reality, the cable is a very short limited one. No wonder they offer it for 51% off. But oh, do they make up for the cost in shipping and handling. When I got the product and saw how short it was, I was naturally disappointed. I was looking for a long USB cable as advertised, long and convienent, and instead I got a limited short reachability. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Case/Wallet
After buying the EBookman, I needed a case that could handle my everyday life. Before I got this case, I had a junkie old wallet and it was falling apart. So when I got the EBookman case, everything fit. Directly into my pocket, the EBookman goes where I go, and in style. No more need for that old "fake-leather" wallet, go in style with the EBookman Case by Franklin ... Read more

    Franklin EBM-901 eBookman (Metallic Black)

    Editorial Review

One of the main complaints about the first few generations of electronicbook readers is their cost--who wants to pay several hundred dollars for theequivalent of a few $3 paperbacks? Enter Franklin's new line of eBookMandevices, available in three different models. We got an early peek at themidlevel eBookMan, which features 8 MB of memory, a sharp 200 x 240 16-levelgray scale display, and excellent versatility.

In addition to being an e-book reader, the eBookMan also plays audio files (bothaudiobooks and MP3s), records voice messages, and functions as a respectablePDA. A flip-up cover and hard rubber outer coating afford protection for thedevice. With a USB-connected cradle, transfers between desktop and the eBookManproceed quickly.

While the eBookMan offers a date book, address book, memo application (usingnatural handwriting recognition), and voice memo recorder, its main angle isstill as a book reader. The large screen and powerful backlight makes readingliterature in the Franklin Reader format clear, though the backlight did seem todrain the batteries rather quickly in our demo unit.

Ironically, the eBookMan's versatility also draws attention to its limitations. While the unit will play MP3 files, it can only store two or three songs at oncewith its 8 MB of memory (the top-of-the-line model, the EBM-911, comes with 16MB). However, if you pick up an optional MultiMediaCard with up to 64 MB ofmemory, it is possible to adapt the eBookMan into a more respectable MP3 player.

While you'll need to spend a little extra to money to get your eBookMan to reachits full potential, the unit's low original cost and variety of applicationsmake it an excellent gateway into the world of electronic literature. --J.Curtis

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value and Impressive Features
I bought the Ebookman 901 without knowing anything about it, and I have been very pleasantly surprised at how versatile it is. Just add a 128 MB MMC card (which are now pretty reasonable on E-bay) and you can have 2 hours of music to go! I have another 64 MB MMC card in it on which I have all the books I have downloaded. A 64 MB card will hold almost 100 regular books! The MobiPocket Reader is great for casual reading, and the Franklin Reader has all the navigation features to make it great for references. I can read any book in HTML or TXT format, and there are thousands for free on the web. The Ebookman also has some nice accessories like a car stereo adaptor and an AC adaptor for home use. The PDA functions like Address Book and Memo Book and Date Book are very handy. There are some really fun games. I take this unit when I am traveling, and am never bored. I think if you read the manual and learn how to use it properly, you will love this device. And now you can find them on E-bay and Heartland America for less than 50 bucks. WOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal for the money!
I've read other reviews for this product that have people complaining about losing their data when the batteries are changed. THIS IS NOT TRUE if you're carefull.First of all, my ebookman came with a bright blue warning flier stating that your ebookman needs to be turned OFF when you change the batteries.Pretty simple, huh? Also, don't wait for your battery to completely die before you change it. The main menu screen has a battery meter in the bottom right hand corner, and I just switch out the batteries when the meter reaches 10%.I primarily use my ebookman to read ebooks and I love it!
