5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable Machine
I have the 1GHz model from early 2003, but it is very similar. This is a machine that has not let me down. Although OS X took some getting used to after using the old OS since 1989 and was a bit frustrating to learn, I came to appreciate its Unix core. The latest model should come with iMovie 4, which is a great movie making program (sure beats Vegas and iMovie 3, which was a bad joke). I do recommend Office X and Virtual PC for compatibility reasons when you buy an iMac--plus Office X beats AppleWorks for word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation (although not for object-oriented drawing). This is also a good system for developing programs, using a scanner (iPhoto is a nice complement), working with audio (the 2003 model had SoundStudio but I don't think the new ones do), and burning CDs and DVDs. It's a big investment but it will be able to run new software for quite some time. This model is gone now but the G5 should be just as good plus faster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.
This is the most innovative computer in it's class. Macintosh computers are very user friendly: easy to set up and use and (unlike most PCs) seldom crash or malfunction. It has an adjustable flat-panel displays with exceptionally bright, sharp images. The processor speed is really great. This new iMac is a terrific computer at a quite reasonable price. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for seniors
I'm retired and I while I wanted to get email I did not want to learn about computers.I bought an i-Mac because I heard they were good for novices and they were right! My grandson hates it because he can't play his games... one more reason I love it!:^)

So I think this is perfect for retired people who don't need all the latest gizmos but just want to write letters and send email.Of courrse all the ladies in my golf circle think it's darling and I think it's just really cute.In fact I am trying to get my husband to paint it pink!

I did subtract one star because the first one I took home broke down in the first week. But I took it back and got another one and it's working just fine. ... Read more

HP Pavilion 735n Desktop PC (2.133-GHz Athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD+RW/CD-RW Drive, CD-ROM Drive)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars

    Editorial Review

The Pavilion 735n Desktop PC may be an ideal fit for those who crave speed, but can't afford a big budget computer, and are willing to give up some of the perks of other, higher-priced HP Pavilions,.

For the Pavilion 735n, HP moves away from the more expensive Intel Pentium 4 processors found in many of its 700 series of Pavilions. That does not, however, mean substantially less power. Equipped with an AMD Athlon XP processor 2600+ running at a healthy 2.13 GHz, a generous 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory, and an Nvidia GeForce4 MX graphics card with 64 MB of dedicated video memory, the system is ready to run virtually any application currently on the market, though ardent gamers and 3-D artisans may wish to add a faster graphics card at a later date.

HP has clearly constructed the Pavilion 735n to meet the growing demands of those who need alternative methods of data storage and movement. Apart from its massive 80 GB Ultra DMA hard disk, the system sports a 3.5-inch diskette drive, a 48X CD-ROM drive and a DVD+RW drive-- the latter of which allows you to burn home movies to disc, create mixed music CDs and backup copious quantities of information. HP has also installed a full half-dozen ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and two IEEE 1394 ports for high-speed links with external devices such as digital camcorders, scanners and drives.

The Pavilion 735n features a broad range of useful amenities, including a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse, an HP Internet Command Center one-touch keyboard, a 10/100 Base-T networking interface for high-speed LAN and e-communication access and an internal 56K modem for low-speed connectivity. Pre-installed software includes the exceptionally versatile WordPerfect Productivity Pack and a variety of valuable multimedia utilities. It should be noted that the system does not include a monitor, thus allowing users to choose a custom model from the many brands and styles available today. ... Read more

Sony VAIO PCV-W30 Desktop (2.0-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive)

Along with its slightly less powerful siblings, the VAIO PCV-W10 and PCV-W20, Sony's inventive VAIO PCV-W30 represents a bright new look for desktop PCs. In contrast to the bulky multi-component setup of traditional PCs, the VAIO PCV-W30 sports a sleek all-in-one fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable, futuristic and very easy to setup and use, Sony's latest PC will appeal to those with limited space and an eye for style.

It won't, however, set any speed records. Driven by a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB), the VAIO PCV-W30 offers solid but unspectacular performance. The unit's graphics chipset, a 32 MB SiS 651, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics or dabbles in 3-D games.

Included inside the VAIO PCV-W30 is a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which users can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the integrated 15.3-inch LCD display, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store MP3s on the large 80 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W30 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, three lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, dual IEEE 1394 FireWire interfaces for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Age of Empire 2, and an impressive array of music, video and image editing utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Right out of the box
This Sony PC worked right out of the box.I just plugged it in and started using it.The ports are easy to find and use, although it does not support older legacy (non-USB) peripherals. It is a very elegant looking machine, and the screen resolution is superb. My only complaints are a smallish keyboard and weak sounding speakers. You can connect aftermarket speakers and keyboard, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for college
Well, I was debating whether to get a laptop or a desktop for college, and then I came across this computer. It's sort of a hybrid between the two and came with many nice features at a decent price. This computer has given me no problems and has been very convient and easy to use.I recommend it for people with little space or who just want a computer that looks cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Computer, Great Value
I just picked my Vaio W30 up a few days ago and it is great.I think it is being marketed as a PC for people who don't know much about computers but as someone who is familiar with computers and technology, I really loved the size, the look, the functionality and the price. At 1600 dollars this is a gerat deal.Only drawback is that it does not come packaged with Office or anything which kind of sucks if you don't own Office already and have to pay another 400 bucks for it (like I do).Basically I use my personal computer for music, movies, iPod, digital camera, internet, Word and Excel. This is ample computer for that.512 MB of RAM...as an average computer user you can't possibly need more than that.2GHz processor, there are faster computers out there but really ask yourself if you need it.You probably don't unless you're doing graphic design or lots of intense digital movie editing. The screen is gorgeous and I am very pleasantly surprised by the speaker quality.Although I am hooking mine up to different speakers, these speakers are more than sufficient for a casual user. This is, as advertised, easy to set up.Plug in the mouse, plug in the computer and you're all set.My favorite aspect is the fact that on the side you have 2 USB 2.0 ports (there is a separate mouse port), 2 FireWire connections, a digital memory stick...this computer is made for the person with lots of gadgets.
I'd say the pros are all listed above (price, small size, functionality) and the cons are: inability to upgrade this (although for a casual user or a college student, etc. this will last for several years) and the lack of quality bundled software.
I truly recommend this for different types of people. It is great for young people who want a hip looking multi-media capable computer. It is great for first-time PC users b/c of it's simple design and streamlined approach.Sony is a good company (I'd buy from them directly though rather than here and get the 2 year warranty) and they've made a great computer.Buy it knowing you are getting a wonderful computer for a tremendous price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superior desktop machine at a reasonable price
It's true that you can get a decent desktop pc...these days. But that usually means (at best) 256 mb ram, 40 gb hard drive, a modest pentium 4 processor and a big ol' crt-monitor that takes up a lot of space on your desk. However, if you invest a little more you can end up with the Gateway 500x with 512 mb ram, a 120 gb hard drive (I axed the printer and upgraded the hard drive instead), P4 2.53 ghz processor and a sweet 17" flat panel monitor. I've had my 500x for a few months now and absoultely love it. If my buddy Renato were here he'd give you all the overly in-depth technical details, but he's not so here's the deal in laymen's terms: Unless you're a heavy (and I stress heavy) duty gamer or do tons of video editing, the 500x has more than enough muscle to meet your everyday computing needs (and then some), including web surfing and downloading all your favorite images, movie and sound clips. Both the cd and dvd drives have worked flawlessly for me. I work with multiple applications open at all times (including those that are known to be resource hogs) and have had zero reliablity problems with virtually no notice of speed degradation. Everything about this machine has been rock solid and it performs tasks at a blindingly fast speed. The sound system and video graphics are great. For the price and quality, you could do a heck of a lot worse than the Gateway 500x (and not that much better). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another piece of Epson Junk
This is the third Epson printer I've owned and it will be my last.

All three printers died about 13 months after purchase. My guess is Epson puts a chip in these things that's activated when you first plug the thing in. It keeps track of the days elapsed. When the printer gets past the warranty period, it activates another chip that clogs the print heads. This requires you to use up three or four cartridges of GENUINE EPSON ink at $25 a crack so they get you for another $100 bucks before you give up in frustration and ditch the piece of Chinese made junk in the American landfill.

I'm sick of being ripped off like this. I'll outsource all my printing and have it done on real photo paper.

    Don't buy this rip-off machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible printer
It was OK for about 13 months, but has given me lots of problems since then. Basically it won't print, and a piece of plastic has broken off it so it's really had it now.

I'm going to buy a new printer, and it won't be an Epson!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Quality
I have had this printer for about 6 months now and have been very happy with it.I used it while on a job search and printed out at least 100 resumes and cover letters, all with excellent quality.

Photographs look fantastic on Epson's glossy paper (only slightly less fantastic on other brands).I honestly think the pictures I print look better than the same pictures from the photo shop.

CDs too look excellent.I haven't been able to get the labels *perfectly* centered, but they are pretty close.

Minus one star for speed. While the quality is great, it takes a very long time to print a photo or a CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy another printer, it will be larger & more costly
You can read all the reviews for all the other printers & compare the features or you can make the decision easy by getting this super value printer/copy/scanner & enjoy its printing quality within 12 minutes of opening the box.

I have a 2004 Compaq, Windows Home XP system.Set up was accomplished seemlessly the first time with the CD-ROM.This is the way it's supposed to happen.I opened the box, plugged the system into the computer with the USB, place the CD-ROM and followed the prompts and then set the printer as my default from the start menu and wow beautiful fast prints emerge from my command. The process took less than 12 minutes. It was so easy I did not have time to finish reading the instructions.I don't know where the other people writing these threads got their problems. The speed may not be the fastest on the market by specs, but the prints come out almost as fast as you can deal with them & as fast as the printers at work costing 10 times as much. The copy quality & ease are great and will not
    disappoint you.

The initial cost & long-term cost are low.Over the next 5 years, my high quality prints will be less than $0.02 each including the cost of the printer.

Who needs a fax anymore. All you get from faxing is poor quality resolution. With email and the built in scanner all the functions that you would ever need for faxing is accomplished right here & you have the documents stored in your emials & not in a drawer. Also you don't need 2 phone lines or have the fax continually mess up your primary line.If I had a fax feature, I would not even hook it up, so why pay for a feature you don't want & could compicate the picture.

All the other machines of this quality are more exspensive to purchase and operate, are larger in size & are more complicated to run.I don't know how a home or small business could go wrong with this printer.A value priced home run.
Amazon got it to my house with standard shipping in 2 days.I am a happy customer with a product that fulfills its claims & purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars What would I have done without it?
I've had mine for two full years, and I used it on most days. As a teacher, the convenience of sticking a book on the flatbed, pressing 25, and then hitting the green button, and having it print out 25 copies very quickly while I shave is... invaluable. I, for one, have never experienced any problems with the unit. I've replaced the toner twice -- a very simple procedure, and it's some of the cheapest toner around, giving me some of the lowest per page costs of laser printers. (Compare Brother toner to, say, Samsung toner.)

I don't experience paper jams, as I have with every other printer I, or my family members, have owned. The scanner integrates seemlessly with WinXP. Just a few minutes ago, I stuck on a cookbook, clicked "My Computer" in WinXP, then double clicked on the Brother icon, and it started the scanner wizard. I chose "greyscale image," it scanned it in maybe fifteen seconds, and then I clicked on "send to email" and I sent off the recipe to a friend of mine. The entire process took me about two minutes. It's not a scanner I'd use for archiving my photo collection, but it is good enough for most uses, and can copy a photo to my photo printer for a decent job.

I've been extremely happy with it. Cheap to operate for copying and printing, inexpensive toner with easy replacement, no printer jams. Two years service, and no decrease in quality. The "toner low" light does come on too early, but I just keep printing, usually a couple of hundred more pages, until I see fading, before I actually replace the toner. While this at first annoyed me, now I use the light as the "go order some toner so you have it around" light.

1-0 out of 5 stars Choose Another Printer!
I thought I would be quite happy with this printer when I found it at a reasonable price. But with its splotchy printing, low drum capacity, and expensive drums, I found it cheaper to buy a HP 1012 than to keep this one running.Even the starter drum on the HP 1012 last longer than the DCP 1000 drums. ... Samsung SyncMaster 191T 19" LCD Monitor (Silver)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $799.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Samsung designed the SyncMaster 191T's base with a surprisingly short depth, trimming it to leave more desk space than just about any other 19-inch monitor. It is ideal for multiple-monitor use in professional applications, when two or more monitors are placed side-by-side. Plus, the TFT screen optimizes graphics with intense color, contrast, and brightness.

For office applications requiring advanced imaging and high-speed interactivity, the 191T features a 0.294mm dot pixel pitch with a 1,280 x 1,024 native resolution. It delivers clarity and crispness with a high 250 cd/m brightness, and 500:1 ultrahigh contrast. An extra-wide viewing angle of 170 degrees permits easy placement and increases productivity, allowing several people to view the screen comfortably throughout your office. The dual interface offers both analog input for standard graphics cards and digital video input for the most accurate color and sharpest detail.

The 191T's dimensions are a very compact 16.4 by 17.7 by 8.2 inches, including the media stand, for a design that lets the monitor fit comfortably into most office plans. It supports Windows, Macintosh, and Sun Microsystems (with VGS Connector) operating systems. Samsung packages the 191T with an AC power cord, VGA cable, DVI-D cable, and tabletop stand. An optional USB hub is available separately. The monitor parts, labor, and backlight are all supported by a limited three-year warranty. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super looking monitor, part II
I am returning with my second review for this monitor, and my rating hasn't changed. But from what I have to say, maybe some of you out there may lower my rating.First, in my first review, I said that the monitor had two dead pixels. I've since found about 3 more. They don't all show up at once though. It depends on the background color of whatever you-re looking at e.g. games, web-surfing.One is always blue when it should be black. On a white background, as I type this, there's one pixel that's stuck in red.It would have been nice if the monitor was perfect with out any defects like these pixels, but I'm an easy going guy and never felt a need to return the monitor because of this.

On my old CRT monitor, I was used to having the resolution at 1024X768. Switiching to the Samsung's native 1280X1024 made things like pictures in webpages look smaller at first, but I quickly adjusted and it's no big deal. You can see more of the web page without scrolling at this resolution anyway.Other reviewers mention rotating the monitor, and yes, it comes with special software to adjust your screen when you rotate it.Unfrotunately, I haven't taken the time to learn how to rotate my monitor. The instructions come on a d CD, not a printed booklet I i wasn't able to find out how to rotate the monitor from this CD.I'm sure the insructions are in there somewhere, but i need to look harder.

Gaming: With the native resolution at 1280X1024, I prefer to leave my monitor at this setting at all times.I don't like the fuzziness of graphics/letters when shifting to other resolutions (I.e. UI'm spoiled by the sharpness of the native resolution). So, if you want to play your computer games at the native resolutioin, you need to make sure that you have a fast computer.I notice ghosting during the cutscenes of GTA3. and if I go to www.gamespot.com and scroll down a web[age, you can notice the refresh rate isn't as fast as a CRT (the screen "blinks" as you scroll). This only happenes from gamespot's website, and it's really not a big deal to me. Overall, I think the colors/graphics of games still look very nice on this monitor.Yes, CRT is sharper, but the Sam,sung comes pretty close.Plus, you save all that desk space.SO, I don't feel like going back to my old CRT (Sony 21" GDM-F500 from ~1998).

I'm happy with my purchase of this samsung.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treat for the eyes
Nice monitor, with two interfaces (analog & dvi), easy to setup and use; no dead pixels.Brightness is perfect and contrast is nice.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome monitor
I compared this new monitor to my old LCD 19" from NEC side by side in a dual monitor setup and I could tell the brightnes and clarity that this monitor gave over it INSTANTLY! For a 19" it looks incredibly large, out of the box and on my desk it was ready to use and play games perfectly, no ghosting at all. I highly suggest this monitor! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Enjoy the benefits of an LCD monitor--slim profile, light weight, no flicker, low emissions, and cool styling--without the high price. This Kogi 14.1-inch TFT desktop model is an ideal and inexpensive alternative to 15-inch and larger units, providing you with big savings while preserving enough screen real estate for your most common tasks.

The viewing angles are relatively narrow, and the 50 ms response time makes the monitor better suited for Web surfing than playing fast-moving video games or watching DVDs. Still, the L4AX offers 1,024 x 768 XGA resolution and supports over 16 million colors, so you'll see fine-looking images in everyday applications.

The handsome chassis accents any PC, resulting in a stylish desktop. The small footprint and lightweight design conserve space and permit easy positioning. In fact, at less than 5 pounds, it's one of the lightest LCDs you'll find. Complete with everything you need for quick and easy setup, including plug-and-play support, the L4AX is also backed by a full one-year warranty on parts and labor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Short Life Span LCD Monitor
The L4AX 14 inch LCD monitor from KOGI ran for just over a year then quit. The new GVision repair facility in Lake Forest, CA (949) 586-3338 wanted $45.00 just to look at it, then would add the cost of any parts needed. From the other reviews, these monitors suffer from short life spans and probable non-existent quality control checks at the factory.Suggest readers buy a well-known brand of LCD monitor, one that has been around for several years like Princeton, for example.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Cheap Generic Chinese product
Granted that everything electronic is made in China these days, but there are products that go through quality checks and those that are cheapos w/ no quality check.

my kogi 14" just died after 13 months. it was cheap cheap cheap. no contrast to speak of, difficult to get it to display a crisp image, i ran into almost all of the problems listed in Kogi's Tech FAQs (except for dead pixels).

This is a clearly a product of a third rate factory in China that have no product quality standards and just crank them out to make a buck to sell to cheap customers (like me) or ones that don't know better, in the developed nations.

Do not buy from Kogi or GVision (their manufacturer). I have learned my lesson as a cheap skate, I would rather get a CRT monitor than a cheap LCD!

5-0 out of 5 stars product overview
I recieved this product in great condition tightly package you wpould think it was small because it is a 14 inch but it is really viewable anyone who gets headaches from looking at a computer screen too long should buy this prduct because of the crisp picture ... Read more

    Apple PowerBook Notebook 15.2" M8981LL/A (1.25-GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD-R/CD-RW Drive)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Personal Computers

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Though Apple's new 17-inch PowerBook G4 rates as its finest notebook ever and one of the most sophisticated portable computers in history, this model, the considerably more affordable 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A, is not far off the pace of its big brother. While it sports a smaller display, a slightly slower processor, and a more compact profile, this 15-inch PowerBook nevertheless incorporates all the other amenities that make its 17-inch sibling so desirable.

Driving the 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A is a fast PowerPC G4 processor running at 1.33 GHz and featuring 512 KB Level 2 cache for rapid retrieval of recently accessed data. Apple has added 512 MB of ultra-fast PC2700 (333 MHz) DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics processor with 64 MB dedicated video memory, thus ensuring smooth operation during high-demand tasks such as 3-D games, 3-D drawing and multitasking.

This high-speed architecture continues throughout the unit, where you’ll find connectivity options such a standard FireWire interface, an ultra-fast Apple-designed FireWire 800 port, two 480 Mbps USB 2.0 ports, integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet, 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless, and built-in Bluetooth for the new breed of cordless digital peripherals. Storage facilities include a spacious ATA/100 80 GB hard disk and a versatile DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive through which you can burn audio CDs, backup critical and write DVD-R discs at 2X speed.

Visually, the aluminum alloy-clad 15-inch PowerBook G4 M8981LL/A is as dramatic as it is functional. Sporting a 15.2-inch (diagonal) display capable of 1280 by 854 resolution, the unit is nevertheless surprisingly thin and lightweight at 13.7 by 9.5 by 1 inch and just 5.6 pounds. Other unique perks include a tap/double tap/drag trackpad, a convenient backlit keyboard for low-light situations, and a DVI output for efficient digital interfacing with LCD monitors. Battery life is estimated at an admirable 4.5 hours under ideal conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like driving BMW
Like it or not, I've used Windows/PC for the past 12 years. Macintosh occasionally appealed to me, but I didn't get it partly because it's expensive, partly because of compatibility. At work and at home, I owned: Dell Inspiron, Thinkpad, Dell/HP Desktops, running Windows 98/2000/XP. Also I tinkered with Sun workstations running UNIX (I'm an EE guy and have a respect for UNIX).
After 12 years of Microsoft (and blue screens), I made a bold switch to Apple Powerbook 15" with 1.5GHz/512RAM/80Gb, and I'm so happy with this system that even 5 stars are not high enough.

    - The sleek aluminum chassis and the wide screen generate Wow! effect.
    - This 15" machine is lighter than my old Dell laptop.
    - It's very quiet during operation, but the bottom side may occasionally become hot.
    - The keyboard has a good depth and touch, and the backlit keyboard is simply cool.
    - Using the built-in microphone, you can play the bundled 3-D chess game via OS X's voice-recognition. Isn't that futuristic?

About software compatibility (from EE guy's viewpoint):
    - MS Office 2004 for Mac became my favorite patch of programs. Even better than the XP version - a very important factor in my decision to switch.
    - Math tools, especially Mathematica 5 and Matlab, run well on Mac.
    - Favorite design tools, Adobe Photoshop and Carrara 3, work well. After all, Mac was built for them.

    - There are tons of open source programs you can use: GIMP, A/G BLAST, ...
    - Some layout and CAD tools are not compatible. I have to use old PC. For those number-crunching jobs, however, I don't use laptop anyhow.

As much as I enjoy steering this elegant silver machine, I love to navigate through the Mac OS X. As Sun's Bill Joy said during an interview, "Mac OS X is rock solid". I like the idea of using UNIX commands on my Mac, although I can do everything with the user-friendly Mac interface.

Yes, Powerbook is more expensive compared with Dell and other PCs, but you get what you pay for: top-quality components, futuristic functionality, eye-catching design, and the enormous joy of owning a rock-solid elegant machine (like BMW!). You'll definitely like this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough laptop!
My PowerBook has been accidentally dropped twice. The first time it fell from a table as my kids were watching a DVD movie from the laptop. The second time my carrying fell from a reception counter. The PowerBook is still running as if nothing had happened.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice looks, but don't look at the price
I switched from Apple to Centrino because it cost half as much and the battery lasted twice as long. Now I really like Apple just fine, but I can't see spending more money to get a slower computer. In fact almost all notebooks are made buy the same few companies, so why does Apple charge more?I guess if people will pay it, Apple will charge it. ... For those who settle for nothing but state-of-the-art performance, Sony offers the fully loaded Vaio GRV680 notebook. Measuring 1.8 by 14 by 11.8 inches and tipping the scales at 8.1 pounds (with one battery) or 8.7 pounds (with battery and optical drive), the Vaio GRV680 isn’t the smallest notebook on the market. But it is one of the fastest and certainly one of the most versatile.

Sporting a commanding 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, a 400 MHz bus, and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory, the Vaio GRV680 is built to blast through any computing situation. Sony has complemented the system’s powerful engine with an impressive 64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video acceleration chipset to make quick work of graphics-intensive 3-D applications and all but the most demanding 3-D games. The unit’s integrated 60 GB hard disk offers plenty of room to store important files and programs, and its detachable DVD+/DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive allows you to turn home videos into DVDs, watch the latest Hollywood releases, burn and play audio CDs, and back up data.

Multimedia enthusiasts in particular will appreciate the system’s massive 16-inch SXGA TFT viewing screen (1,280 x 1,024 resolution) and integrated stereo speakers. Other desirable amenities include a Memory Stick media slot, three USB ports, and a fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders. The unit delivers 1.5 to 3.5 hours of battery life with one battery attached and 3 to 7 hours with an optional second battery installed in its multipurpose bay.

The Vaio GRV680 is preloaded with a wide variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003, Adobe Premiere LE, and a broad array of audio, video, and photo utilities. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER BUY A SONY LAPTOP
I own this laptop and after 13 months, it now is a $2,400 paperweight! One month after my warrenty expired, this model kept over-heating and crashing.I called Sony and received the worst customer service ever. They wanted me to pay $800 for a new motherboard!I refused.Since then, I've researched this model and other Sony models on the net and found that lots of people have the same issue and Sony expects them to pay $800 for new motherboards.Someone needs to get a group lawsuit against them.I'll never buy another Sony laptop again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very provincial product for a "supposedly" global brand
I wish I had bought a Toshiba instead of the Vaio. That's what I was planning to do.But at the last minute I was lured by Sony's DVD burner. As it turns out, I bought the Vaio in the USA, but many features are rendered useless in Europe, where I live most of the year.Plug and play drivers don't work for simple accesories like a USB mouse !?!The Vaio can't find the drivers even for a SONY digital camcorder. So I'm not using the DVD burner.Nor can it find the drivers for my HP printer. The Sony technical support tried to help, but couldn't resolve my problems. They told me that the machine was designed to work in the USA, but not in Europe. How bogus an excuse is that? Also, the warranty is only good in the USA.Pretty lame for a supposedly global brand.

Lack of Wi-Fi is a major drawback, and Sony recognized that and apparently tried to remedy this by offering free PCMCIA Wi-Fi cards for a limited time.Unfortunately, I bought my Vaio ONE DAY after this offer expired.I sent Sony a note asking them to send me the card even though I missed the date by one day.Did they? No.Hard to understand why you would recognize that you have a major design flaw... but recognize it for only a limited time...

The Vaio is fast and works very well for other basic applications. Also, I did get a Bluetooth USB adapter to work (after having to return a PCMCIA Bluetooth adapter which did NOT work) almost to my surprise. However, the people at Sony really blew it with this customer.Don't expect me to buy another Vaio. I think I'll go with Toshiba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely one of the best laptops i've used
Awesome machine. It has a huge, clear, bright display, good resolution, a comfortable keyboard, decent sound output, a powerful processor, plenty of RAM and HD space, one of the best ethernet cards around. Definitely recommend it.

I have yet to try to install Linux on it. Seems like there's not much information about it's compatibility, and some devices are unlikely to work, like the modem and power management, but driver support for Sony is coming along nicely.

Weight and battery life are issues to consider: if you're looking for a laptop you can use comfortably on a long flight, forget it unless you buy a power port adapter - on mine, batteries last for around an hour and a half with normal use. ... Read more

Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 Notebook (2.20-GHz Celeron, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive)
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Personal Computers
    list price: $1,099.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Featuring a cost-effective Intel Celeron processor and middle-of-the-road accouterments, the Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 Notebook is a wise choice for budget-conscious individuals, students, and anyone who needs a computer that'll handle the basics. Distinct from Toshiba's entry-level Satellite A15-S127 Notebook in several areas -- including wireless communication and twice the memory -- the Satellite A15-S157 represents solid value.

The key word here is economy, and to that end Toshiba has equipped the Satellite A15-S157 with one of today's best "bang for the buck" processors, the 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron. Accompanying the Celeron is an impressive 512 MB of PC2100 DDR memory and an Intel 852GM graphics chipset with 32 MB of shared video memory. With this level of power, the system can't be called upon for complex 3-D rendering or high-end games. It is, however, perfectly satisfactory for standard word processing, database and spreadsheet activities, e-mail communication, and Internet surfing.

Measuring 13 by 11.5 by 1.5 inches and tipping the scales at just 6.1 pounds, the Satellite A15-S157 is relatively compact and comfortably lightweight. Inside, you'll find such amenities as a 15-inch display screen (1024 by 768 maximum resolution), stereo speakers, a full-size 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys and a TouchPad pointing device, a satisfactory 40 GB hard disk and a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In its stock form, the Satellite unit does not permit DVD burning.

Connectivity options are plentiful but not quite as upscale as those of its pricier competitors. Though the system does feature two USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, integrated 802.11b LAN, a 56K modem and an RJ-45 LAN network port, it does not include a high-speed FireWire interface (often used to link devices such as digital camcorders). Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works, and Intuit Quicken Basic 2001. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.13 hours. ... Read more

This laptop is a steal for the price.I have had it a month now and I love it.I did a lot of checking around before I bought a laptop because I didnt know a lot about laptops at the time.If you were to buy a Dell with the same scymatics as this laptop, you would easily pay double.Compaq's are about $500 more for the same thing.Right now I am in Mosul, Iraq and I use this laptop for about 8 hours straight everyday and I havent had a single problem. The wireless internet is definently a plus.I can sit in my tent and get signal off a wireless router 50yds away no problem. The ease of use of this computer is great.Compared to the pentium 4, the Celerion is still a great operating system. If your looking for something cheap yet reliable, this is the laptop for you.Look on epinions.com or pricegrabber.com and read other peoples reviews and you will see how great of a computer this is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba S157 AND S127 owner.
As an owner of a Toshiba S127 and this S157, I can tell you that this thing is pure quality.Dell's laptops have gotten almost pitiful in quality, while IBM are insanely priced.Where's the quality, inexpensive laptops?Toshiba is your answer.

Trust me guys.Get this model.I bought the S127 and ended up giving it to my mom. This model comes with the built in wireless Internet (which is awesome), 40GB of storage, 512MB DDR (XP uses MUCH more than 256MB even doing the simplest tasks), and 2.2Ghz Celeron (you can't tell the difference between 2Ghz & 2.2 Ghz,trust me).

I scored my S157 in brand new condition for $825 off some really nice guy off eBay I struck a deal with.(I picked it up locally)

I'm going to review every single thing about this laptop, sequentally. Please note that this is an unbiased review:

1.) Keyboard: Probably the best keyboard i've ever used in over 18 years of computers.I loved these soft key laptop keyboard.Doesn't have that annoying cursor thing in the middle of the keyboard that some people like to use. (Most despise it, though)

2.) TouchPaD: Works great. Two basic buttons, silver color, and work perfectly.

3.) 15" XGA screen. The screen is nice, bright, and vivid, but I definately could use SXGA (1280x....) XGA is only 1024x768 and is just enough for basic tasks

4.) Speakers: Silver titinium stereo speakers. They work adequately for basic needs. What can I say? They're laptop speakers.Go pickup some Logitech Z-340s for $30 at Best Buy.They will compliment these nicely.

5.) Design: Design is superb. The laptop is suprisingly thin (1 inch) and the colors are perfect.Really great job.

6.) Weight: 6.15 lbs, according to my measurements.

7.) LEDs: The LEDs are great.5 basic small LEDs that tell you what's going on.Nothing fancy.

8.) 802.11b Wireless (S157 only). This is great. You can save your PCCard slot; you can also disable/enable the device whenever you want.Someone mentioned somewhere that the built-in wireless card means it uses the notebook as an antenna. I don't believe that though.

9.) CD-RW/DVD ROM: Works perfectly.I would've perferred a trayless drive (like the Pioneer 16x DVD drives) but hell, this is great. They both work great.

8.) Battery Life: Battery life is not as good as I would like it to be. I get 2 1/2 hours max out of this computer on a full battery charge, assuming light working conditions.Extra battery costs $150+tax at Best Buy or Circuit City.I'm using my mother's S127 batter. ;)

9.) Noise Level: Both computers are dead silent. There is a fan that turns on once in a while to cool the computers. The fan isn't loud at all.

10.) PC Card Slot: It only has 1 PC Card slot, but that's not an issue anymore now that I have built in wireless internet

    11.) Ports:
Serial: Great but I don't use it.
Parallel: Ok, I still don't use it.
2x USB 2.0: Now, this is beautiful.I have several USB devices, some even USB 2.0, that I use with this computer.
Neither models come with S-Video, DESPITE what some specifications say.The model also comes with external VGA for connecting to a projector or external monitor.
RJ45 (Ethernet) AND Modem already installed. What a great value.

    12.) Performance:
Hard drive: Works decently. Only 4200 RPM, so don't expect mind-blistering performance, but it's fast enough even for an end user.

Processor: 2.2Ghz Celeron is like a crippled P4; nevertheless, it performs almost all basic functions with ease. Gamers apply elsewhere.

    Sound: No comments.Sound works. :)

Video: This is my biggest complaint (besides the microphone) about this model.Comes with 32MB Intel Extreme Graphics (Shared).Because it's shared with system memory, people tend to think it's 64MB Intel graphics; believe me, it's NOT.It's 32MB Intel extreme graphics that will let you do only the basic video or gaming.Don't expect any kind of performance from this.I really wish Toshiba had put an ATi Radeon mobility in here, but for the price I'm not complaining. :-)

    * Software: I don't use the software that comes with this bundle, but make sure to check the personal cons below for additional details.

    * Toshiba Utilities: As with most utilities, I don't like running manufacturer's utility files, but Toshiba's aren't _that_ bad.(I still don't run them, though). They allow you to control most of the function buttons at the topic and assign them different functions.

Build Quality: This is where the laptop truly shines.Putting IBM's insanely high quality and price tag, this is the best laptop you can get for budget-price quality.Toshiba rules.

    Personal Cons:

    * No built in Microphone. The thing has a port for a microphone, but I really, really wish Toshiba had put one in.I know this isn't an issue for most people, but I use microphones on a daily basis. They're cheap, granted, but that's another thing to lug around.

    * Rebates: Ugh, I hate rebates.I got my S127 for $760 (after 8.5% tax) and after $250 rebates.I got my S157 for $825 cash from some guy on eBay.

    * One thing that annoys me is that Toshiba has loaded this comp with plenty of useless junk like AOL, Special offers, etc. This is an easy fix.I just wiped the drive and put XP Professional on there and boom, it's done. :)The S157, IIRC, comes with Microsoft Works, which I don't use.

If you want more detailed pictures of this laptop, search on www.newegg.com.They have both models and detailed pictures on it.
    I hope I haven't missed anything. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars super deal, surprisingly slim and light
Had this computer for 20 days. Its a great computer for the price. The built in wi-fi works like a charm.Screen, keyboard, and size is great. Processor and memory was sufficient for my purpose including a little use of paint and drawing programs.Only thing I didn't like is their touchpad. They have something called Draglock feature turned on which makes it hard for me to do what I normally do with my touchpad.I only found out after fiddling around with adjusting all sorts of touchpad settings that it was the Draglock being turned on that was bothering me.If you having trouble with making your touchpad act smoothly, I suggest you turn this feature off. However it is not easy to get to.It is under 5 layers of menu screens. The final menu you will find it is under "tapping settings". Overall, a super buy when you consider the rebates I got this with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for the money
Purchased this item to use as a "briefcase" as a claims adjuster. Found the identical item for twice the price at Best Buy but returned it to order online at Amazon. Many pockets provide exceptional storage. Computer case can be removed separately to lighten the load when it's not needed. Carrying handle, back-pack and wheels with handle make it quite versatile no matter the terrain. Highly recommend this to anyone who needs a sturdy product that needs to be mobile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable, Roomy, Stylish
This is by far the best notebook backpack I found. My laptop is a 15.5" and its hard to to find a backpack that wasnt HUGE.This doesnt look huge but it has so much room inside it and plenty of space for books, disc, power cords, a mouse, etc.I also think its well made andhas enough padding to protectyour laptop. The zippers are great!!! Really smooth and it never feels like its sticking. Its also a lot easier on your back than one of the messenger style notebook cases! It also comes with a lifetime warrenty if you fill out the card and mail it back (at least mine did...it was inside the bag).

5-0 out of 5 stars One helluva bag
I absolutely love this bag..I use it for my Wide Screen 15.4" Dell Inspiron 8600, which absolutely doesnt fit in any other backpack in the market. This one's a real stud. Though a bit heavy, its one solid unit, and protects the laptop well, with tons of room for your other stuff. I intend to use it mainly for Air travel, and bought it after a lot of research in Circuit city and other stores. ... Read more

Early Adopters Pick: January 2003. The first high-speed wireless networking router to use the 802.11g standard, which is four times faster than the current standard (802.11b) and backwards compatible.

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, andmultiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

    access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

    • 802.11b
    • 802.11a
    • 802.11g

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT...
I have an RCA cable modem with RCN as my ISP.A great service which I highly recommend. I recently bought the Linksys G-Router after getting my hp laptop needing to setup wireless at home.I got it to work with no problem but then I experienced bandwidth loss and constant connectivity issues.I wrongly thought that it was the router.Fool that I was! After countless attempts at recycling the modem and WPA keys etc., I finally figured out that the modem could not support the wireless router and it had a short, plus RCA no longer carried it and the thing was ugly, taking up space.I've since gotten the Linksys Modem (BEFCMU10) and stacked it with the WRT54G router and it works fantastic!!!Be sure to call your ISP with the modem's MAC address to get online.YOU WON'T get connected otherwise. My ISP had me up and running within 5 minutes. Also some ISP's give you a discount if you supply your own modem.Check it out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't
It sounds like some customers have had really good Linksys router experiences.I haven't.So I have come to conclude that sometimes these routers work great, sometimes they completely fail.I've spent hours dealing with Linksys' customer support and my ISP trying to get my router to work.My iBook AirPort and Windows 2000 /USB wireless adapter both found the router easily. But the router was not able to hook up with my ISP.Both computers get a good wired static IP connection to the internet.I tried using Linkksys' customer support by phone, email, web and chat and kept getting advice that did not work and www.linksys.com pages that didn't work.A software engineer, I'm reasonably tech-savvy so I usually have success with half-decent tech support. They never once suggested that their router might be malfunctioning. One of my ISP's support representatives said that he's had a run of some 40 calls from Linksys customers with this kind of problem.Apparently I got one of these duds.

I'd say Linksys has big problems with quality control and customer support. With many good alternatives out there I don't think it's worth rolling the dice with Linksys.I gave it two stars, rather than one, because it sounds like the good ones work really great and I imagine the duds a in the minority. For what it's worth, the guy from my ISP said he's had good experiences with NetGear routers.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY easy to install, VERY easy to use!!!
Hi, I'm very happy with this Linksys Router. It took me only 10 seconds to surf in the web. Believe it or not!!!. I just plug in the Ethernet cable from my DSL Modem into the Router conection. I turn on my Gateway Laptop and....surprise!!! I was already conected to the web!!!.
No configuration needed, no CD running, no nothing!!!
Great product, great Plug and Play from Windows XP. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great drive - just dont use it to store data
This was my fourth and possibly last LaCie drive.
Loved the spec, size, footprint, speed and yes its fairly quiet.
Unfortunatley however, and mine is not the first story, the drive is rather inept at actually storing data.

The drive was partitioned into two drives and worked well untill it started not opening folders. Instead it returned error 'unformatted drive' messages. This then spread to the whole of one drive before the next.
From reading other reviews the problem is the power down which wrecks the drive. Nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best
I purchased the 160 GB version of this drive (Iomega mechanism), plugged it in and went to work. The drive spins down on sleep with my iMac, comes back up immediately on hitting any key or moving the mouse, and is quieter than the iMac itself. I read one review by someone who also took a stab at Mac users in general in which it was noted that the Lacie operated hot (it does - the aluminum shell dissipates heat, as intended), and overheated overnight because it wouldn't sleep with the computer. Obviously, this is a Windows problem, not a Lacie problem. Consider the source. Another review mentioned noise - no such problem here (with the Iomega mechanism, anyway). It's also wicked fast, much faster than the Que 80 gig it replaced.

All in all, couldn't be happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drive, great customer service
I have been using this drive for more than a year now. It's actually a replacement for the same model, since the first one died on me as a result of OS X's sleep mode feature. In fact, I have had other LaCie drives in the past that never failed. Although I'm aware of the fact that hard drives can fail at any given point in time, a LaCie drive has never failed on me as a result of the company's own manufacturing quality. Having said this, I recommend that while you have any firewire drive (any brand whatsoever) connected to your computer, don't put the CPU to sleep (just the drive and the screen, not the entire system). A short spike in current shoots through the FireWire connection on wakeup, which eventually will damage your external hard drive.

I am very pleased with LaCie. The drive works beautifully for backup and videoediting alike. Also, the company's customer service quickly sent me a replacement drive as the original was still under warranty. Since I don't put my CPU to sleep anymore, no problems with the drive whatsoever. A solid drive at a good price for anyone who needs to rely on their backup data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Device`
I have had my mouse and keyboard for about a year now, and so far, no problems.I still have the orginal batteries in my keyboard.
Here is a little list of things that I do not like about the keyboard and mouse:....... none.
Here is a list of what I like about this mouse and keyboard:............ Everything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always precise and Drivers are Great
I've been using Logitech mice for 8 years now without a hitch and the Elite Duo is still excellent. The problem with Tracking or Skipping is ALWAYS attributed to the Transmitter location and it's very sensitive so you must experiment with location.
Once you have it down you can use it from another room and Logitech always updates & perfects their drivers. I use an Elite Duo with my Older Mouseman PS2 Ball and a Keyboard Serial touchpad not to mention the extra PS2 keyboard and have 0 problems.
Battery life could be better in the mouse but when you use it for 12h/7d/365 I guess it can be a problem. I use NIMH rechargeables and get about 3 weeks.
PS: you can easily switch hands with this mouse if you're good too.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent !
I uses it for about 8 months and I only the battery once on my keyboard !! For the mouse, it uses about 2 batteries every 1.5 month. Not bad at all. I wish the LED on the mouse can be turn off sooner after idle time, it will save evern more energy. Response is great, I do not see delay at all.

One issue is on the keyboard, I wish the spring on the keys are same height as normal keyboard, so I can press deeper as I try. As I hit the key, I have to reduce my force so I do not hit the key too hard. The spring on the keys seem too light too, my fingers get tire easier on this keyboard than a normal keyboard. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Eh... Version 5 was fine.
I've been a fan (and user) of Acrobat for many years, and am continually amazed by the number of organizations that *don't* circulate their documents in PDF format. I don't even *read* Word attachments anymore, for fear of viruses and because I *know* they won't look like the author intended.

However, earlier versions have each added great new features, and the differences of v6 over v5 just don't seem substantial enough to warrant the price or effort of upgrading. For most users, I'd recommend saving dough by finding a copy of version 5, a vast improvement over versions 1 thru 4, and of course a conceptual and practical leap (or three) beyond sharing documents in native formats such as Word.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really a mess
It's obvious that Adobe feels safe and entrenched as THE maker of PDF creation software, because Acrobat installs like a herd of elephants moving in to your computer. It completely re-worked my MS Word toolbars and would not allow me to restore them the way I want them. (Even after un-installation, there is still something at work against my normal.dot template.) Other applications felt the impact, too. All I want is a way to make PDF files, not a new lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Acrobat 6 could not deliver the PDF files for me. On a P4, 1.8 Ghz system, I allowed it to process my Word document for 5 hours before I gave up and had to get some real work done. I went and found activePDF Composer, which handled the same Word file and delivered my PDF file in just 10 minutes.

      Get over yourself, Adobe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like 6.0 Professional BUT it's causing system problems.
I have only installed the 6.0 Professional and have the proper support structure and space.6.0 Professional works fine but I have a brand new batch of glitches in the rest of my system. ... Read more

      Editorial Review

The arguable king of CD burning is back, and it's got a bag of new tricks. Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 Platinum Edition takes you by the hand and leads you through all kinds of CD and DVD creation, from data backups and music compilations to photo slide shows and feature films. User friendly to the last, it comes with a massive manual weighing in at almost 400 pages. Unfortunately, however, beneath the shiny surface of this program hide a few snags.

Burning data and music compilation CDs is simple enough with a "drag to CD" function--you can literally drag files from Windows Explorer onto an icon that resizes in the lower right corner of the desktop. More complex burning and copying can be done through wizards or manually.

For DVD authoring, Roxio includes support for every DVD burning format out there. It allows you to create movies, photo slide shows and more. It interfaces directly with digital video recorders to capture footage to the PC's hard drive, from where you can then burn them to a DVD. You can rearrange parts of a movie, trim clips, add sound, and more. The interface is functional at best, though, and casual film directors will pine for a simpler, more graceful solution than this program can offer.

The PhotoSuite applet's interface is overly friendly and not nearly powerful enough. Adding photos from a networked PC was a painstakingly slow process. Worse, once we'd picked out a few dozen photos, we went to create a VCD slide show and were met with an error message that even baffled Roxio tech support.

Another caveat: Easy CD automatically checks for product updates, but it forces you to register the product in order to download them. This invasion of privacy aside, Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 does provide some easy and user friendly features at the cost of clunky interfaces and limited options for power users.--Joel Durham ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Want marginal customer support?Buy any Roxio product!
I purchased the Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 Platinum Edition in November 2004, after Microsoft's SP2 for Windows XP made my Basic 5 version unusable.I've been exchanging emails with Roxio Technical Support ever since.I can burn a data CD only to a CDR (for some reason ECDC 6 does not recognize my CDRWs).I cannot copy a CD using the Disc Copier function. For some reason the ECDC 6 recognizes my burner only through the Creator Classic function.

What is wrong with companies these days? They grab the money and run.Never mind whether the customer gets the functionality they are paying for.

I'll be looking into Nero or Sonic, which I've heard positive comments from live users.

Amazon.com, on the other hand, is one customer-oriented company!

1-0 out of 5 stars You buy this and loose customer support
Do you know if u ever need to get support, or to download a patch for your paid Roxio software, registration IS required from their website?! Yes everytime you need an software update/patch, you need to login with password. Registration needs an valid email address and your ROXIO software key. Thanks to this COMPULSORY registration I need to keep record for one more login/password combination. And Pray that you don't loose your cd key.

BTW if your cdburner came with a bundle Roxio Easy creator, forget any update / support from roxio since you dont get a cd key. Somehow this is one evil way ROXIO try to get your business. if one day you upgrade your operating system and need to update for the bundle roxio software, you have to BUY the retail version Easy Creator.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with Windows 2000/XP; at least partially(!)...
For DVD-Video editing/creating, I use Roxio's VideoWave 7 Professional. For everything else this is great! I've had great success with win2000; it's designed for XP/ME/98 as well. 2000/XP users w/NTFS partitions will be best off; ANY user w/FAT32 partitions will likely experience some craziness! I use Norton Ghost for backup/imaging: so even if my computer spontaneously combusts(!), I can rebuild it pretty quickly. My Fave's- attractive interface, excellent html help, Creator Classic with Disc Copier, AudioCentral, Label Creator, and Drag-to-Disc: these are amazing! With *just these* components & a DVD+/-RW drive, this software *should* actually be pretty stable- it works great on my system! (AthlonXP 3000+; 512MB memory.) Disc Copier copies CDs/DVDs that aren't copy protected, yet I've copied a few store-bought items: a music CD; a cheap PC game CD; an instructional DVD(!); a foreign NTSC DVD(wow!). Creator Classic makes all kinds of discs- Data, Music, MP3, Enhanced, Mixed-Mode, Bootable & more! AudioCentral effectively rips, burns, converts & manages MP3s, WMAs, WAVs & OGGs. It's even greater now with the new mp3PRO Plug-in encoder available at Roxio's website (highly recommended!). I've converted audio tapes, with my analog-in sound card, into high-quality MP3 CDs with professional looking labels! Drag-to-Disc is especially important to me because win2000 (my favorite OS) can't write to CDs/DVDs without extra software help. This is a tremendously versatile package! For most of my CD/DVD needs, this product is all I need! Official Caveat Time- *PLEASE BACKUP YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE INSTALLATION!* Glitches, bugs, hangs & crashes can be experienced all throughout this product. Make sure Windows is up-to-date with all recent service packs & patches. If you install the entire product to see what it can do, then decide you can do without a few features, it's best to uninstall the whole package, restart the computer, and then reinstall only the needed features with their corresponding updates. Check Roxio's support page for common issues/problems to evaluate risk! (Especially win98/ME users!) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great game but still room for improvement
I think Civilization III is a fantastic game and I especially love this expansion pack with all the new civilizations, new wonders, technologies and the two new forms of government.

One big improvement I find in Conquests over the original is that trade is better. the AI is more willing to trade their surplus fur/iron etc than in the original. that really bothered me about the original cause I remember one game when my neighouring AI civilization had a surplus of four fur and still wouldnt trade any with me. Another improvement I like is the option to make the AI civilizations more aggressive. This is good as I have played one game in the original civ3 on Monarch level which I completed without a single war occuring in the whole history of the game. That's just not realistic. thankfully now u can make all the AI more aggressive which is good. also conquests allows new civs to be created when one is destroyed which is good.

However I think there are still faults in the game that I'm sure will probably be rectified in Civ4. The latter part of the game is very slow and can get annoying especially when pollution keeps occuring on every go and u have to keep sending your workers to a new pollution spot to clean it up. Fortunately civ4 has promised to eradicate this. another major problem is the military side of the game. the "stack of doom" tactics that u use to defeat an enemy is simply not realistic. fortunately again civ4 has promised to correct this problem also. the final fault i can find with civ3 in general is the way every civ starts at the same year 4000BC. i think it would be nice if u had maybe only 3 or 4 civilizations starting the game and then a few more randomly start up over the next few thousand years. also it would be cool if factions of your civilization broke off or rebelled to become independent civilizations later in the game especially if they were located on a seperate island or continent from your mainland.

to sum up i say buy conquests if u already own civ3 (its only $14.99). if not i think ur probably better off not get addicted to the game at this stage and simply wait for civ4 to come. that promises to be a much better game to get addicted to.
