Picture Publisher 8.0 Average Customer Review: CD-ROM US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Affordable feature-rich software is a rare thing; even when it surfaces,it's perceived as something incapable of yielding professional results.Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.0 proves this perception wrong by providing acomplete tool set for image editing at a cost that's far below that of thecompetition. In addition to the usual assortment of filters, selection tools, and maskingtools that commonly are found in all bitmap editors, Picture Publisher 8.0features several integrated tools for the Web designer. A built-in GIF animationtool allows for easy painting or editing on each frame of a GIF, and a paletteoptimization tool helps reduce the size of a Web graphic without having to sacrificequality. A favorite tool--worth the cost of the entire program--is an interactive patternmaker. Making seamless tiles for Web graphics, 2-D graphics, or as a decal for3-D graphics is sometimes difficult, but this tool allows you to view the tiledpattern in a larger window, while a smaller window contains the source tile thatis being edited. Updates in the larger window occur automatically as changes aremade to the small tile. There are drawbacks to using Picture Publisher 8.0. For example, while it can domany of the things that Adobe Photoshop--the industry standard--can do, it isnot Photoshop. While this isn't a problem for someone who needs a good tool forimage editing and graphics, it might be a problem for someone who hopes to usethe tool in a large shop. Some shops don't like to spend time or money ontraining; and, if you don't use what they use, you're out of luck. However, Picture Publisher 8.0 is an economical alternative to higher-pricedgraphics software. It is a rich, full-featured package that meets the needs ofthe vast majority of Windows graphics designers. Built-in file-formatcompatibility with Adobe Photoshop means that compatibility is a minor issue, and its ability to use Photoshop plug-ins provides a means of expansion. PicturePublisher 8.0 is indeed a worthwhile, affordable, and alternative image-editingapplication. --Mike Caputo ... Read more Reviews (8)

You see, with the Flyer you would slap down some video, place an effect in between and voila!Instant playback--hundreds and hundreds of effects! I didn't really know what rendering was until I came over to the PC platform. Finally, just over a year ago, I discovered EditDV 2.0 (Now CineStream--which, can I just say, the new name stinks!). Edit DV comes the closest to real-time that I've ever seen.It has an amazing amount of filters and controls (ie. Color Correction, Film, etc.) and plenty of effects (more can be added with Pixelan Software).I create video only for hobby, work projects and the occassional contract job, now days, but even as a professional videographer, I would not be without at least one workstation set up for Edit DV. Cuts only editing is Completely REAL REAL REAL TIME!Add a few transitions and you'll be rendering for a few short seconds.Create some complex filters and you'd better go to lunch--but isn't that the way PC editing is? The thing I like most about EditDV is it's easy capture window. Most programs prompt you for a name after each captured clip completes.Edit DV can be set up to Automatically name your clips so you can keep capturing as fast as you can click "Start" and "Stop", "Start" and "Stop"... Edit DV takes advantage of your Dual Processor, so you get work done twice as fast! Not many programs in this low price break offered that a year ago.I'm not sure many do even today. Edit DV runs LOTS faster; processes and thinks much faster than Adobe Premiere 5.x.Again, I've only tested on my one machine (which is dual PentiumIII/500MHz with 512Mg RAM).Adobe is VERY slow compared to EditDV (on my system). Edit DV 2.0 has everything and more than Adobe Premiere 5.1 has--except one.If you do Wedding videos, or special occassion photo montages, listen up!I found myself turning to Premiere, even as slow as it was, to do photo montages.Premiere imports your photos at whatever resolution you scanned them. This lets you zoom and pan across your images like the pros.Edit DV 2.0 converts all imported photos to 640x480.If you zoom you'll see serious image loss. HAPPY DAY, THOUGH!!!Edit DV 3.0 (CineStream 1.0) allows you to do the same "large photo importing" as Premiere, so I can finally toss out Premiere altogether!! Only, who will join me in my crusade to change the new name, CineStream, back to EditDV 3.0?Anyone... Anyone...? PS - Both Adobe Premiere 6.0 and EditDV 3.0 (CineStream) are OHCI compliant.I have not tested Premiere 6.0.But you should be able to catch my EditDV 3.0 review right here on Amazon, in a few weeks. You simply won't find a better package (hardware and software) for the price!

PalmOne m100 Handheld Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $99.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you're new to the world of handheld organizers, the Palm m100 may just be the right fit for you. Under the hood, the Palm m100 features much of the same great software and options we've come to expect from Palm, such as scheduling and contact applications and an infrared port to beam information to other Palm users. But Palm has added some new features to both the engine (which runs Palm OS 3.5) and the chassis. The first thing you notice is the new sleek, curvy design, which helps make it fit more snugly and comfortably in your hand. At just 4.4 ounces, the m100 is far lighter than the Palm III series but features essentially the same dimensions (4.66 by 3.12 by 0.72 inches). You can personalize your m100 by snapping off the faceplate and replacing it with different-colored accessory faceplates. The Palm m100 also includes a removable, double-hinged flip cover, which, with the flick of the wrist, opens like an original Star Trek communicator (though an over-exuberant flick will send it flying off its hinges). You can also display the date and time through a little window when the cover is closed, by pressing the scroll button. The screen is sharp and has contrast-variable backlighting, though at 2 by 2 inches, it's slightly smaller than other Palm devices. Pressing the buttons at the bottom of the m100 automatically open the Calendar, Address Book, and To Do List applications. The fourth button maps to the new Note Pad application, which allows you to write notes directly on the screen in your own handwriting (though the original Memo Pad application remains on the system). The 2 MB of RAM may seem puny in comparison to other Palm models (such as the 8 MB Palm IIIxe), and it is not expandable. However, you can still store an amount of data that would normally clog a paper organizer (up to 6,000 addresses and 1,500 to-dos and memos, according to Palm). A great plus for users on the go is the new HotSync serial cable (instead of a bulky cradle), which is used to communicate with your PC and synchronize your Palm m100 data with data stored in the included Palm Desktop software application. Note that while the Palm m100 ships with software for both PC and Macintosh systems, Mac users will have to order a free serial adapter from Palm (shipping charges are not included). While the Palm m100 isn't for everyone, it is a fun and functional replacement for your paper-based organizer and a great introduction to the Palm family.--Agen Schmitz Pros:

Kodak DC280 2MP Digital Camera w/ 2x Optical Zoom Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $449.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Kodak DC280 digital camera offers Kodak's intuitive user interface, plus a high two-megapixel resolution and a variety of advanced features. Its 1,792 x 1,200 resolution allows for fine detail even at large image sizes. The Kodak DC280 also includes a 2x optical/3x digital zoom and macro capabilities. The built-in flash comes with four modes including red-eye reduction. Special camera modes include time lapse and burst modes as well as auto and manual exposure settings. Kodak's easy-to-use menu system is one of the most intuitive we've seen in the digital camera realm. The camera also includes special effects (black-and-white mode, sepia mode, borders included, document mode) and auto or manual exposure settings. The Kodak DC280 has a large, bright 1.8-inch LCD monitor. Kodak includes a generous 8 MB CompactFlash memory card. The camera supports USB connectivity for fast, cross-platform downloads. While the DC280 comes with four AA batteries, like all digital cameras, it drains batteries quickly. We recommend investing in a set of rechargeables. ... Read more Features Reviews (114)

Handspring Visor Deluxe (Blue) Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the hot new handheld that runs the popular Palm OS, so it's compatible with thousands of existing applications. It's also expandable with Springboard modules that can add extra memory or a modem, or transform your Visor into an MP3 player, video game, GPS receiver, and more. Plus, its fast-synchronizing USB connection is compatible with both the PC and Macintosh. To set up the Handspring Visor Deluxe, we followed the Getting Started instructions printed on the software CD-ROM case, inserting the batteries, calibrating the touch screen, entering the date and time, connecting the included USB cradle to our PC (an optional serial cradle is available), installing the desktop synchronization software, and synchronizing the Visor with our PC. The entire setup process was straightforward and intuitive, requiring only about five minutes. Fans of Palm Computing's Palm III line of connected organizers will have no difficulty using the Visor, as it runs on a licensed version of the Palm OS. All the popular Palm personal information management (PIM) applications are included and work exactly the same way as they do on the Palm. The Visor also uses Palm's Graffiti handwriting recognition system for text entry, which takes only a few minutes to learn and a few hours of practice to master. Handspring has added to the Palm OS an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and support for floating-point math. The Visor Deluxe comes with 8 MB of RAM, providing plenty of room for thousands of addresses, to-do items, and memos; hundreds of e-mail messages; and several years of appointments. It also includes a USB synchronization cradle, two AAA batteries, a stick-on Graffiti "cheat sheet," a leather slip case, a stylus, a Handspring logo decal, a Quick Reference Guide, inserts describing accessories and cases, and a software CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes Palm Desktop Software 3.01, a software link to Microsoft Outlook, and the full-length User's Guide. However, the Visor Deluxe does not come with an AC adapter. Using the Visor was intuitive and fun, just like the Palm III series organizers that it's based on. However, unlike the Palm, the Visor has an easily accessible expansion port that supports Springboard modules. For our tests, we installed a modem module, an 8 MB memory module, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf game, and a Physician's Desk Reference module (note that you can install only one module at a time). Installing these modules is very easy, and they can greatly increase the functionality, power, and usefulness of the Visor. (For more information, see the descriptions of the individual Springboard modules. Overall, we were very impressed with the Visor. It takes the best of the popular Palm platform, and adds memory and expandability--all at a great price. --Mike Brown Pros:

I replaced it for the sony clie pega tj25 handheld. For all of you who have or plan to buy this item... Good luck.
The Palm OS on the Visor Deluxe is slightly outdated (3.1 instead of 4+) which can cause headaches if you are trying to install newer software. Also, the casing is a little too large to be a pocket item and the unattaching cover can be annoying at times. Those are some general negatives.Besides that I personally had other problems.I was very careful with my Visor and kept the plastic cover on it unless it was in use.Still, under regular, every-day abuse, the screen cracked while it was in my pocket.Replacement was a simple process and Handspring gets 5 stars on service (though it would have been nice if it wouldn't have had to be replaced in the first place). After receiving my replacement, however, I noted that the stylus was not held in place as it should have been while in the visor, which caused the loss of many styli.Sadly, again after much care, the screen of my Visor mysteriously cracked again. Thus, I am now looking into buying a new PDA and probably won't choose a Visor Deluxe this time, being that they don't withstand my handling well.If you choose to purchase a Visor Deluxe, be careful with it and I would recommend investing in a new protective cover other than the standard one provided.

Digital Lighting & Rendering by Average Customer Review: Paperback (15 January, 2000) list price: $50.00 -- our price: $33.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review New Riders' [digital] series is performing a tremendous service to thecomputer animation and graphics community. The newest addition to this family is[digital] Lighting & Rendering. Author Jeremy Birn has long been regardedas a talented computer graphics artist and generous writer, and he's beensharing his techniques and discoveries for years. Using computer graphic and 3-D tools to create accurate images is easy; usingthem to produce beautiful, inviting, memorable images requires more thantechnical skill. [digital] Lighting & Rendering introduces reasons andtechniques for using light, shadow, texture, and composition. The book is notsoftware-specific, but demonstrates techniques that are applicable to almost any3-D graphics application. It is assumed, however, that your 3-D software ofchoice supports such basic rendering features as soft shadows, light maps, colored gels, depth-of-field blur, motion blur, and so on. The first half of the book discusses lighting and shadow: lighting workflow;light types; using lighting rigs, such as three-point lighting; shadows andshadow type; and light quality. Lighting--how it's used, where it's placed, the kind of shadow it casts, its intensity--is critical to any image, whetheryou're creating a photorealistic computer re-creation or a surreal fantasypicture. [digital] Lighting & Rendering explains not just how to usevarious lighting techniques, but why. An outstanding chapter on color and its use through composition and lightingoffers insight into how colors are perceived and how color affects a scene. Theimportance of color, hue, and saturation should not be underestimated, and theexamples in this chapter, like in every other, drive home that point. Additional chapters cover exposure, composition and staging, materials andtextures, and compositing. There is no accompanying CD-ROM, but theplatform-generic nature of the book (and of the subject matter itself) makes itunnecessary. The book is designed to educate and inform; it is up to readers toapply what they learn to their own projects. Although fewer than 300 pages long, [digital] Lighting & Rendering is aninformative and important book, useful to any computer graphics artist. Eachpage is filled with fascinating, immediately helpful information about thecraft. The publisher spared no expense on the book's production, either--everypage is in color, with at least one color photo per page illuminating the text.Mr. Birn's experience and insight are not to be underestimated, and this book isnot to be missed. --Mike Caputo ... Digital Capital: Harnessing the Power of Business Webs by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (May, 2000) list price: $27.50 -- our price: $18.15 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review God forbid that doing business and making money on the Internet should bear any resemblance whatsoever to the past millennium of bricks-and-mortar capitalism--that would be too easy.Nope, it's a whole different ball game now, and the new rule is: adapt or die.At least that's the message behind Digital Capital. From the three principal cyberconsultants at the Alliance for Converging Technologies (one of whom, Don Tapscott, authored the bestsellers The Digital Economy and Growing Up Digital), comes a paradigm for global takeover: the business web, or "b-web" for short. In their words, b-webs are "strategically aligned, multi-enterprise partner networks of producers, suppliers, service providers, infrastructure companies, and customers that conduct business communication and transactions via digital channels."Some examples are eBay, Cisco, Dell, MP3.com... in short, any enterprise that a) knows how to form lateral partnerships with other goods-or-service providers, and b) eliminates the role of planes, trains, and automobiles--not to mention lots of time, money, and human energy--by doing almost everything over the Internet. Not only do the authors provide a wealth of b-web case studies (including Charles Schwab, Priceline.com, Webvan, AT&T Solutions, and OptiMark in addition to those mentioned above), they outline a step by-step process for weaving a b-web of one's own. Too often, Digital Capital's sound ideas come marinated in think-tank jargon so alienated from plain English as to be nearly impenetrable. Consider: "Disaggregation leads to 'disintermediation' and 'reintermediation'," which, believe it or not, isn't a line that French film theorists use in pick-up bars, but the simple statement that business webs manage to cut out a lot of the traditional steps between producers and customers. Now why couldn't they just have said that?No matter. After you nibble through the self-important MBA-speak, you'll find a smart look at how online shops are rewiring early 21st-century capitalism. --Timothy Murphy ... Read more Reviews (37)
Tapscott's clear vision about 'digital money' will surely give us a higher perspective about what works and what doesn't work in this internet 'boom and bust' era. One of the best Tapscott's book since 'Digital Economy'.....
Don Tapscott is a must for any executive looking for tangible case studies. Find more than just a justification for your Internet initiative--find out how other companies are doing it. Fight Coase's Law through more efficient outsourcing; Streamline your partnerships; And more... I recommend this book to all of my Internet marketing students and would love to make it required reading. ... Read more Isbn: 1578511933 |
