Iomega 31310 Zip 250 MB USB-Powered Drive Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $179.99 -- our price: $117.79 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Nothing beats a Zip drive for transporting large files or makingbackups, as it combines proven speed and reliability with the most widespreadcompatibility. In our tests, we found that this extremely versatile 250 MB USB-powered Zip drive makes it child's play to add this capability to your PC orMac. And its small, lightweight design makes an excellent travel companion, especially since it doesn't even need batteries or an external power source. The drive comes with detailed, easy-to-follow installation instructions, but youprobably won't even need them. Just run the setup program and plug the driveinto your USB port; your PC will automatically assign a drive letter to it andrecognize it as a removable disk drive. There aren't any jumpers or switches toset; in fact, the drive has only one button, which ejects the disk. Once it'sinstalled, you use it just like a floppy drive to save or copy files. Physically, the drive sports a very thin, light plastic case, measuring 169 by117 by 26 millimeters and weighing only 1.5 pounds. It draws all its power fromthe USB port, so there's no need for batteries or an external power supply. And,like any USB device, it's hot swappable: you can plug or unplug it withoutrestarting your computer. It can sit flat on a table or stand upright with theincluded plastic stand. Once we started playing with the USB-powered Zip 250, we immediately saw manysituations in which it would come in handy. For example, say you wanted to dosome work at home. You could easily copy the files to a Zip disk, take the drivehome with you, and then just plug it into your PC and be ready to go. Since it'scompatible with both PC and Macs, it's perfect for sharing files acrossoperating systems. And of course, its compact shape makes it ideal for taking onthe road. The drive performed well in both our read and write testing; we didn't encounterany glitches, and it took just a little over 2 minutes to copy 100 MB of MP3files to the drive. That's fast enough for most uses, and much faster than a Zipdrive hooked up to a standard parallel or serial port, but not as fast as aninternal IDE or SCSI Zip drive. Iomega includes some valuable backup utilities with the Zip drive, as well assome other useful applications. Iomega Backup lets you create and schedulecompressed backups of specific folders or entire drives. MusicMatch Jukebox isan excellent utility for ripping CDs and organizing your digital music files. And Adobe's ActiveShare offers a slick interface for manipulating photos andsharing them on the Web. The USB-powered 250 MB Zip drive offers an inexpensive and simple way to addremovable storage to your PC or Mac. Its slim, light design makes it absolutelyinvaluable for road warriors who needs to take their data with them. --KenFeinstein Pros:

Iomega Zip 250MB SCSI External Drive (PC/Mac) Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $199.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Macintosh users have long enjoyed the speed and flexibility of the SCSI interface, built standard into nearly every PowerPC computer produced by Apple before January 1999. The SCSI model of the 250 MB Zip drive is the next Zip product extension for Mac and SCSI-equipped PC users, boasting not only of increased capacity, but also of a speed boost of 50 percent over the classic SCSI Zip 100 drive. And compared to floppy disks there really is no comparison--the SCSI Zip 250 drive is 56 times faster. Of course, PC users can take advantage of the significant performance and capacity benefits of the SCSI Zip 250 drive with the addition of a Zip Zoom SCSI accelerator card or other ASPI compatible SCSI card. Zip drives answer the call for your demanding storage needs such as downloading software, images, and information from the Internet, or delivering your latest brochure or artwork to a pre-press service bureau. Zip 100 and 250 drives work right along with you, matching your need for speed and providing a spacious, easily organized solution in the form of Zip 100 MB or Zip 250 MB disks. You can view these disks as your lifeline and insurance policy. Easy to duplicate and back up, rugged, reliable Zip disks can protect your data from hard drive crashes and even physical computer theft. On Zip disks you can build your personal library of downloaded software, personal and work projects, scanned images and scrapbook material, financial records, tax history, even your personal music selection--and rest easy knowing that your life is safe there. ... It's also great if you're living on a budget.Though yourinitial purchase is more expensive than buying a Zip 100, you'll spend farless on disks. Since 250mb disks are essentially the same price as 100mbones, your overall storage costs will be cheaper in the long term. Perhaps more importantly, you won't have to abandon your existing Ziplibrary to upgrade. The product's much vaunted backwards compatibility withZip 100s is real and mostly trouble free. The only glitch with it is thatif you're trying to save large (over 15mb) files to a Zip 100, it will takesubstantially-even painfully--longer than if you were using a Zip 100drive. For many people, this won't be a consideration. But if you havelarge multimedia files in your 100mb disk library, you might considertransferring them over to 250mb disks. To put it simply, I definitelywouldn't recommend either version of this productif you plan to use only100mb disks. The real question, though,is whether you should get theSCSI or the USB version. Out of the box, the SCSI external is twice asfast as the USB, but less portable. To use the SCSI version, you've got tohave SCSI cards installed in every machine on which you're going to use thedrive.Virtually no computers, PC or Mac, come with pre-installed SCSIcards, so you'll immediately have to spend money to bring your computer(s)up to speed. And you'll have to deal with the fact that most unknowncomputers won't have a SCSI card. Meanwhile, the entirely moreportable USB version, though slower by default, can be brought up to thesame speed as the SCSI.With the addition of a FireWire adaptor, there'sno difference between the two drives. All Macs since the G3, and anincreasing number of PCs come with FireWire built-in.And if you happen toencounter a computer without FireWire, you can easily remove the adaptorand go back to the default USB connection-which isn't exactly"slow", anyway. With either form, you're going to have tospend some more money to get both top speeds *and* portability. If youdon't plan to travel outside computers you already know have SCSIcapability, it's probably cheaper to go with a SCSI Zip.But if you wantthe fastest, largest-capacityZip drive that you can use on the highestpercentage of computers, buy a USB Zip 250, and add on a FireWire adaptor.

If portability is an issue, get a USB drive. If you don't have USB ports, you'd better have SCSI ports, or lots of time to waste. The parallel port version is just too slow. They take over an hour to copy off a full 250MB Zip disk! But in going beyond comparison of apples and oranges... Zip drives really are great, I would recommend one to anyone. They're fast (except for the parallel one, ugh) the 100/250MB per disk is great. Not to big, and most importantly - not too small. They're one of, if not the most reliable magnetic removable media I've seen. Out of all the disks I've had, more than I can count, I can only remember 1 going bad.
Installation was a snap.I was able to install it in my Dell computer in under 10 minutes, and then install the software and haveit functional in another 10 minutes.Initially, I had installed it inWindows 98, but have recently upgraded to Windows 2000 and it still workswell.I have another of these drives installed in my Linux box and itworks there as well. I primarily use the Zip drive to carry data aroundwith me (home, work, etc.) that changes too quickly to burn cdroms.Itfunctions perfectly, seems very durable, and makes transferring datasimple.Sometimes, I wish it were a bit faster (like at the end of theday), but my "go-home-from-work" routine of copying about 200 MBof data allows me to clean up the desk, turn off the light, etc., then grabthe zip disk and go. Eventually, they will probably make a 1 GB Zipdrive, but for now, the 250 MB Zip meets my needs. ... Read more Asin: B0000300S4 |

While my company and my customers use a wide array of computers, virtually all have USB ports. This compact, lightweight device is easy to carry, easy to install and, based on my experience, apparently indestructible. The kit also comes with 6 multi colored, rewritable disks. That's 600 MB of storage, which is a lot more than usually comes with these devices. Moreover, the color disks are nice as I can color code disks to companies I'm visiting and quickly and easily get the one I want, get things set up and get rolling. The other thing I like about this system is that the way these devices work, you can use a 100 MB disk on a 250 MB disk drive, but not vice-versa.I have a 250 in my PC and do my heavy work on that and download the specific files I need to the 100MB disks for road warrior duty. So, all in all what you get is a very easy, reliable and flexible system that you can use virtually anywhere. So, get this puppy, clean up your hard drive and get more productive! ... Iomega 10919 Zip 100 Drive(Parallel Port) Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Is your hard disk running out of room? Do you need to protect your valuable data? Consider Iomega's Parallel Port Zip 100 drive, an inexpensive and portable external disk drive. Iomega says it has sold over 100 million of its 100 MB Zip disks, the floppy companions to the Zip 100 drive, and we believe them based on how easy it was for us to set up and use the Zip 100. We just plugged it in, connected a cable to our PC's parallel port, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the setup wizard. The CD-ROM comes with the necessary software to make the Zip 100 act like any other drive on your PC--except the Zip 100 has a 100-MB storage capacity. We set the drive up on our test machine and copying files to and from drive F was just as easy as it was on drive A or C. You can still use your printer with the Zip 100, as the external drive includes its own parallel port. Iomega recommends that you connect no more than one additional device to the Zip 100, but in our test, we "daisy chained" three peripherals--a printer connected to a scanner connected to the Zip 100 connected to our PC--without encountering any device conflicts. We used the included 1-Step Backup and 1-Step Restore utilities to back up and restore several hundred megabytes of an old Pentium's hard disk. The process was entirely intuitive and flawless but slow. We did not even approach the claimed 25-MB-per-minute performance, but that's just the way peripheral life is when you're using a parallel port. The Zip 100 is self-contained, and if you take along the parallel cable and AC power supply, it becomes portable. However, the real convenience comes from the Zip disks themselves. The disks have a tough plastic shell and come in a CD-type jewel box, so little protective precautions are required as you exchange data with Zip-owning friends. Pros

Iomega 10918 Zip 250 MB Parallel Port Average Customer Review: Electronics US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Remember when floppy drives ruled the land of backup storage? With hard drives becoming ever more cavernous and file sizes becoming more bloated each year, it's a wonder those atrociously slow floppy drives still come standard on every computer. Maybe it's time you moved up to something faster, better, and more capacious. A Zip 100, you say? Maybe last year. But why bother with that when you can get a Zip 250? As you likely have gathered from the name, Iomega's Zip 250 uses 250 MB disks for incremental data backup. Since the media is removable, you can buy new disks when you need more storage instead of buying an entirely new drive. The 250 MB capacity is a much more reasonable standard for shuttling around files than the 1.44 MB diskettes used by a typical floppy drive. You might be worried about purchasing a drive that uses a parallel interface, as that's the port most printers occupy. Iomega thoughtfully has designed the Zip 250 with a pass-through port, meaning you can attach the drive to the PC and then attach a printer to the Zip drive. It worked flawlessly in our tests. The drive comes with both an AC adapter and a parallel cable, along with one 250 MB Zip disk--everything you need to get started. Zip drives always have been designed well, and the Zip 250 is exceptional in this regard. There's a well on the side for the power plug so it doesn't protrude from the jack. This makes it possible to stand the drive on its side if it's taking up too much space lying flat. Zip products have been around long enough that the software for them has had plenty of time to mature. The included CD-ROMs contain useful tools like Copy Machine, which lets you copy a Zip disk using a single Zip drive, and a one-step backup/restore utility, which easily backs up files from your hard drive. We also liked the included Norton Zip Rescue Disaster Recovery software, which lets you make a working backup copy of your Windows installation so you can easily restore it if the system goes bad. It works much better than the Startup Disk utility included with Windows 95 and Windows 98. The main drawback to the parallel-port Zip 250 is its abysmal transfer rate. Peaking at 0.8 MB per second, we're talking at least five minutes for a 250 MB transfer. That's under perfect circumstances, and we all know how often computer users encounter perfect circumstances. Regardless, it's better than the 1.44 MB floppy drive it replaces, and most users won't need to transfer more than a few megabytes worth of data at a time. --T. Byrl Baker Pros:

I gave Iomega my email address when I registered my drive but they didn't tell me that using their well-documented defective drives ruins the disk with loss of all data. But, I had to get my data off, so I bought a Zip 250 and today I had the Click of Death again with total loss of data and a ruined expensive disk. Arrggh! Needless to say, I would NEVER recommend a Zip drive and I am planning on forever boycotting Iomega. And, if you happen to run into a Zip drive engineer who designed this turkey, please give him or her a (gentle) dope slap for me. Who at Iomega thought this piece of engineering garbage was suitable for valuable data? (If you are tempted to by a Zip, anyway, search for "Click of Death" ...before buying a Zip drive. I wonder how many countless gigabytes of data have been lost?)

Unlike Iomega's past products, I didn't even need the manual because of the no-hassle installation. After I backed up nearly 7 gigs without a problem in about an hour and a half,it became clear that of all the back up solutions around, this one is the ultimate. The question is will it become popular enough so that it's not just a back up, but useful as a portable storage device as well. If it does, and if the Peerless can avoid the various problems of past Iomega drives, it may just obviate recordable DVD's in all their annoying formats. ... Read more Asin: B00005LDK1 |

I've had mine over a yearand it hasn't given me any problems. The disks perform flawlessly - theyshould at the premium price.I use it for file and application backups -both PC (98/NT) and Mac.I haven't had any problems with read/writetransfer.If you do any video or animation - this is a must buy, unlessyou intend to lug around an external harddrive.Personally, I've had greatproduct experiences with all 'external' Iomega products.Internal productsare another story... My only pet peave is the mega thick cord if you goSCSI.1) Because the standard cord that it ships with, it limits theplaces you can place your drive - especially if you have no case cover. 2)It is a true struggle to wrestle it gently without tearing out your scsicard + your other daisy chained peripherals. The price for this unit isvery good - however, I've seen 1gig Jaz for around $100 refurbished.Bewary though, I've seen the 1 gigs in many repair shops (I'm unsure of whatthe symptoms are though). Also, watch out for the transformer - there wasa recall about a year ago on the units catching fire; check Iomega's sitefor this info.
This is an extremely fast 2GB drive that is faster than 90%hard drives out there. ... Read more Asin: B00000J3T4 |
