    Editorial Review

Nothing beats a Zip drive for transporting large files or makingbackups, as it combines proven speed and reliability with the most widespreadcompatibility. In our tests, we found that this extremely versatile 250 MB USB-powered Zip drive makes it child's play to add this capability to your PC orMac. And its small, lightweight design makes an excellent travel companion, especially since it doesn't even need batteries or an external power source.

The drive comes with detailed, easy-to-follow installation instructions, but youprobably won't even need them. Just run the setup program and plug the driveinto your USB port; your PC will automatically assign a drive letter to it andrecognize it as a removable disk drive. There aren't any jumpers or switches toset; in fact, the drive has only one button, which ejects the disk. Once it'sinstalled, you use it just like a floppy drive to save or copy files.

Physically, the drive sports a very thin, light plastic case, measuring 169 by117 by 26 millimeters and weighing only 1.5 pounds. It draws all its power fromthe USB port, so there's no need for batteries or an external power supply. And,like any USB device, it's hot swappable: you can plug or unplug it withoutrestarting your computer. It can sit flat on a table or stand upright with theincluded plastic stand.

Once we started playing with the USB-powered Zip 250, we immediately saw manysituations in which it would come in handy. For example, say you wanted to dosome work at home. You could easily copy the files to a Zip disk, take the drivehome with you, and then just plug it into your PC and be ready to go. Since it'scompatible with both PC and Macs, it's perfect for sharing files acrossoperating systems. And of course, its compact shape makes it ideal for taking onthe road.

The drive performed well in both our read and write testing; we didn't encounterany glitches, and it took just a little over 2 minutes to copy 100 MB of MP3files to the drive. That's fast enough for most uses, and much faster than a Zipdrive hooked up to a standard parallel or serial port, but not as fast as aninternal IDE or SCSI Zip drive.

Iomega includes some valuable backup utilities with the Zip drive, as well assome other useful applications. Iomega Backup lets you create and schedulecompressed backups of specific folders or entire drives. MusicMatch Jukebox isan excellent utility for ripping CDs and organizing your digital music files. And Adobe's ActiveShare offers a slick interface for manipulating photos andsharing them on the Web.

The USB-powered 250 MB Zip drive offers an inexpensive and simple way to addremovable storage to your PC or Mac. Its slim, light design makes it absolutelyinvaluable for road warriors who needs to take their data with them. --KenFeinstein

1-0 out of 5 stars What is Iomega thinking??
I have been a long-time user of Iomega Zip drives...the internal type. They have worked great and are convenient for quick access, transfer and back-up of daily computer files.I have some 60 Zip disks filled with an assortment of important files.

Since my internal Zip drive is on the same ribbon cable as my hard drive, and I wanted to add another hard drive to my computer, I had to give up the internal Zip drive (only two devices per ribbon cable). Therefore, I purchased the external Iomega 250MB USB Zip drive.

It is a plug-and-play device, so installation is instant.I put in my first disk and presto...it came alive...with a clunk, a grind and an assortment of other strange noises...it started working.First task...transfer about 24MB of info on to a disk.I waited and waited and waited some more.12 minutes later it was finished. With the internal Zip drive this task would have taken about 12 seconds.I could have gone out and washed the car during the time I waited. My computer has USB2.0 but the device is only a USB1.1, so that might have something to do with it.

Not only did this drive take forever to complete its task, it was uncomfortably noisy. It makes all kinds of grinding noises, sometimes slowing down to a crawl then speeding up again. My internal drive made a little noise, but nothing like this.Forget about doing anything else on your computer while the Zip drive is chugging along.

I cannot recommend this product at all.It is slow and noisy and leaves me the general feeling of...well, being ripped off...because it is basically a cheap piece of junk!

At one time Zip drives were the best way to archive files simply because there were no other convenient options available. But, I think it is time to toss out all those old Zip disks and go to USB2.0 flash drives for easily accessible back-up and storage. For the big, more permanent archiving I burn files to CD's or DVD's.For daily back-ups and quick access, flash drives appear now to be the way to go.

Iomega had better consider producing other storage products because if they keep making junk like this, they won't be in business much longer.

1-0 out of 5 stars garbage
This is a piece of garbage.I bought this drive in September 03, along with a new iMac with flat screen. The drive wouldn't read many of my Zip disks, rarely loaded, and frequently froze my iMac.After numerous, frustrating communications with Iomega they agreed to replace it.They sent me a reconditioned model that fell apart before I could even insert a disk. They sent me another one.Which also froze my iMac and ate my disks. They sent me another one, mid-December.Worked fine until last month; same problems.
I've been talking with them and the only "solution" they can offer is to send me another one (!) or offer me a 15% discount on a higher priced model.Obviously, we're not on the same page about this.
Don't waste your money on this model; it's garbage.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper
It makes a hell of a racket when you fire up your computer, but the IOMEGA 31310 Zip 250 is well-worth the momentary ruckus. We have had ours for over two years now and have not a single problem. I use it for storing my novels and for my teaching purposes; my wife uses it to store hundreds upon hundreds of her photographic works. Neither one of us are computer savvy but this drive was easy to set up and brainless to use. I plan on keeping this for a long while, although, as another reviewer has mentioned, CD storage is going to be the way of the future. So be it. Until then, the IOMEGA 31310 Zip 250 will be our storage facility of choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What you're looking for
If you need an exterior Zip drive, you've found it.This is perfect for your every zip need.It is very small- not much wider then an actual zip disk.In addition, it comes with a rubber stand that can make it take up even less desk space by making it vertical. It is extremely light and therefore portable and easily plugs into your computer with a fast USB cable. There is no necessary installation either. Also, it is good to note that this is a good MB zip drive to get for two reasons- it can still take 100MB ones (the size smaller) and there is no real need for most to get a 700 MB drive (the size larger) because if you're dealing with that much information most people would use a CD instead and it is very hard to find a 700 MB disk. Also, take into account that this is a very good price especially considering it includes 3 disks- which can run $$$ each sometimes.

1-0 out of 5 stars ZIP 250MB Starter -3 U250 Disks not included
This starter kit doesn't contain the U250 disks (10 year guarantee), but the regular 250 MB zip disks (5 year guarantee).I am sending 2 kits back today.Iomega quit making the U250 Zip disks.Someone at Amazon knows about the problem, but the website has not been updated.Don't waste your time !

Product worked well for about 6 months.Eventually it got slower and slower until it no longer would read any diskettes.Called the company and they said the drive was out of warranty and would cost $80.00 plus tax and shipping to fix it.I only had the drive for about 14 months and didn't even use it very much. IOMega refused to make any type of concession.Well they just lost a customer over their cheap dealings. ... Read more

Macintosh users have long enjoyed the speed and flexibility of the SCSI interface, built standard into nearly every PowerPC computer produced by Apple before January 1999. The SCSI model of the 250 MB Zip drive is the next Zip product extension for Mac and SCSI-equipped PC users, boasting not only of increased capacity, but also of a speed boost of 50 percent over the classic SCSI Zip 100 drive. And compared to floppy disks there really is no comparison--the SCSI Zip 250 drive is 56 times faster. Of course, PC users can take advantage of the significant performance and capacity benefits of the SCSI Zip 250 drive with the addition of a Zip Zoom SCSI accelerator card or other ASPI compatible SCSI card.

Zip drives answer the call for your demanding storage needs such as downloading software, images, and information from the Internet, or delivering your latest brochure or artwork to a pre-press service bureau. Zip 100 and 250 drives work right along with you, matching your need for speed and providing a spacious, easily organized solution in the form of Zip 100 MB or Zip 250 MB disks. You can view these disks as your lifeline and insurance policy. Easy to duplicate and back up, rugged, reliable Zip disks can protect your data from hard drive crashes and even physical computer theft. On Zip disks you can build your personal library of downloaded software, personal and work projects, scanned images and scrapbook material, financial records, tax history, even your personal music selection--and rest easy knowing that your life is safe there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Choosing between the USB and SCSI versions
The Zip 250is perhaps the most rational choice for anyone looking to bridge the gap between Macintosh and Windows based machines. In both theSCSI and USB forms, it invites portability. It's the ideal solution foranyone who creates anything but video on one platform for use on the other. (For cross-platform video editing, a Jaz drive is moreappropriate.)

It's also great if you're living on a budget.Though yourinitial purchase is more expensive than buying a Zip 100, you'll spend farless on disks. Since 250mb disks are essentially the same price as 100mbones, your overall storage costs will be cheaper in the long term.

Perhaps more importantly, you won't have to abandon your existing Ziplibrary to upgrade. The product's much vaunted backwards compatibility withZip 100s is real and mostly trouble free. The only glitch with it is thatif you're trying to save large (over 15mb) files to a Zip 100, it will takesubstantially-even painfully--longer than if you were using a Zip 100drive. For many people, this won't be a consideration. But if you havelarge multimedia files in your 100mb disk library, you might considertransferring them over to 250mb disks. To put it simply, I definitelywouldn't recommend either version of this productif you plan to use only100mb disks. The real question, though,is whether you should get theSCSI or the USB version. Out of the box, the SCSI external is twice asfast as the USB, but less portable. To use the SCSI version, you've got tohave SCSI cards installed in every machine on which you're going to use thedrive.Virtually no computers, PC or Mac, come with pre-installed SCSIcards, so you'll immediately have to spend money to bring your computer(s)up to speed. And you'll have to deal with the fact that most unknowncomputers won't have a SCSI card.

Meanwhile, the entirely moreportable USB version, though slower by default, can be brought up to thesame speed as the SCSI.With the addition of a FireWire adaptor, there'sno difference between the two drives. All Macs since the G3, and anincreasing number of PCs come with FireWire built-in.And if you happen toencounter a computer without FireWire, you can easily remove the adaptorand go back to the default USB connection-which isn't exactly"slow", anyway.

With either form, you're going to have tospend some more money to get both top speeds *and* portability. If youdon't plan to travel outside computers you already know have SCSIcapability, it's probably cheaper to go with a SCSI Zip.But if you wantthe fastest, largest-capacityZip drive that you can use on the highestpercentage of computers, buy a USB Zip 250, and add on a FireWire adaptor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a home with multiple computers
We are family with 2 PC's and a laptop.I bought an 250 MB Iomega Zip drive a few weeks ago, and found that it is a great tool for file sharing between our new and not so new PC's.I was able to transfer severalprograms between our computers; creating extra hard drive space on theolder model by moving some programsto the zip drive and the biggest plusis being able to use the zip drive as a 'slave' drive on one of the PC's. I also was able to transfer several mailing lists from one computer (thattook me 8 HOURS to create and write!) without having to re-enter all theinformation. This product has saved me money in hard drive upgrades, aswell as time that I would have had to spend typing over 400 mailing labelsfor our local VFW post.A great tool. Thanks!Ed Rhoden ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the very best!
This is the very best backup product ever. I love it. It works flawlessly and I use it every day. I wish Iomega was not discontinuing it. I will try to buy as many disks for it as I can because I want to use this forever. Also, as I have USB 1 on my computer, the fact that that is was the interface is is great!
Worth every penny. In fact, please DON'T buy it, so that there will be more of them for ME to buy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Is this being discontinued?
I bought this Peerless backup system and some extra tapes in Dec 2001 from Amazon. I have been satisfied with the product. We use it to back up 5 computers every week. Recently the tape would not eject from the drive.AFter email discussion with Iomega reps, I determined it was not a software problem.I decided to buy an additional unit to use since removing the tape with a paperclip each time is a hassle. It appears this system is being discontinued. You can no longer buy tapes from the maker (Iomega)and the bundles are scarce.I think soon you will not be able to buy them anywhere.I like the system and have bought 2 bundles as backup. If you like this item, better stock up now.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatestBackup Device Ever!!
This new peerless is easy to install and use, it's speed is fairly fast with USB 1.1 and will no doubt be even faster with USB 2.0 when it becomes widely available. A 7GB back-up of my entire Hard Drive took only 110 min with my USB 1.1 connection. As I understand it; changing to a firewire interface will require only the replacement of the base unit. The receptacle and Disks can be used with any base. I disconnected my tape back-up drives and put them in storage!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rear adaptor funky, but it works
I got the FireWire version of the Zip drive.
My previous purchase of the USB version has been flawless.
The FireWire version is a little funky because the firewire interface doesn't look "normal/integrated", there is this funky adaptor that attaches to the rear and appears to convert the firewire to something else (looks like SCSI).
The manner in which this adaptor attaches to the rear is a little precarious (looks like it won't stay hooked reliably).
But I in fact had no problem getting the software to work, and the drive has not given me any problems at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expect from a firewire/usb product
After first getting a USB portable zip and found it to be extremely slow, I returned it and bought a firewire Iomega zip.As I need it to be portable, I don't want it to require a power adapter.I was dismayed when I found out that the USB version requires a power adapter. While the firewire one does not, it is not that much significantly faster than the USB version. It is also bulkier than the USB version because of the adapter. It takes 7 minutes to transfer a 56 Mb file--not what I expect from a firewire connecting device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
I needed an external drive in a hurry, and initially turned to external CD burners. However, after reading numerous reviews across a variety of sites, it quickly became obvious that none of the external burners were up to the task. According to reviews, most of them (HP 8000 series, Iomega Predator, etc...) suffered from reliability problems, and to exacerbate the matter further, transfer speeds were reportedly slow. Hence, in desperation, I turned to other forms of storage. To my delight, Iomega's Zip 250 USB/Firewire drive has performed excellently! I haven't had a chance to test out the firewire capability, but all I can say is that I am extremely pleased with its USB performance! I have successfully transferred all my files from my work computer (running on Windows NT) to my home computer (running on Windows 98), and there have been no software or reliability issues at all. Good going, Iomega! Now, if only they could pull their stock out of the pits........ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fastest type of zip drive there is!
Well, the SCSI zip drive is just as fast as the internal one, but I don't have any SCSI ports, and why spend the extra money for a card, so I can use a more expensive zip drive that sits on my desk. Portability is not necessary to me because most all my friends and co-workers have zip drives too. I did have a USB Zip 250 before, but I never took it anywhere so I sold it to my friend for cheap and got the internal 250. The speed is gerat - more than twice as fast!

If portability is an issue, get a USB drive. If you don't have USB ports, you'd better have SCSI ports, or lots of time to waste. The parallel port version is just too slow. They take over an hour to copy off a full 250MB Zip disk!

But in going beyond comparison of apples and oranges... Zip drives really are great, I would recommend one to anyone. They're fast (except for the parallel one, ugh) the 100/250MB per disk is great. Not to big, and most importantly - not too small. They're one of, if not the most reliable magnetic removable media I've seen. Out of all the disks I've had, more than I can count, I can only remember 1 going bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy to use product that works well
I use one of these internal 250 MB Zip Drives on a daily basis.I am very happy with it.

Installation was a snap.I was able to install it in my Dell computer in under 10 minutes, and then install the software and haveit functional in another 10 minutes.Initially, I had installed it inWindows 98, but have recently upgraded to Windows 2000 and it still workswell.I have another of these drives installed in my Linux box and itworks there as well.

I primarily use the Zip drive to carry data aroundwith me (home, work, etc.) that changes too quickly to burn cdroms.Itfunctions perfectly, seems very durable, and makes transferring datasimple.Sometimes, I wish it were a bit faster (like at the end of theday), but my "go-home-from-work" routine of copying about 200 MBof data allows me to clean up the desk, turn off the light, etc., then grabthe zip disk and go.

Eventually, they will probably make a 1 GB Zipdrive, but for now, the 250 MB Zip meets my needs. ... Read more

The USB version is great step up from the old parallel version.Faster and self-powered.No more dragging round that horrible thick cable or external mains unit BUT build quality is [poor].The unit is cheaply made, rattles and the USB port is obviously soldered to a [unsatisfactory]PCB that is poorly secured in the pastic shell.BAD quality throughout on the hardware front I fear. However, it works, the discs are robust and I guess in a few years you can chuck the drive and buy another. It's pretty much a disposable price now anyway. At 100MB though you may be better off buying a USB hard disc dongle like the Disgo.A really good 128 MB storage and very strong.ZIP discs have a place but a 100 MEG is probably on the last few years of life.Guess that Iomega know this and that's why they have released such a cheaply made unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where did it go?
I had to come into the 21st century and use a backup better than the old 1.44 floppy drive.I bought the Iomega 100 mb zip and it is an improvement, however I am always having to reinstall it because it seems to disappear. It is always wanting me to install a storage device driver everytime I boot. There has to be a better backup drive out there.I thought Iomega was the leader in the field, but I guess they are like HP and put out junk too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers tremendous flexibility and simplicity for big files.
In my work I deal with a lot of sizable files--25-30 megabytes is common. These don't do well on my lap top.My solution has been to use the Iomega 31234 Zip 100 MB USB Starter Kit by Iomega.

While my company and my customers use a wide array of computers, virtually all have USB ports. This compact, lightweight device is easy to carry, easy to install and, based on my experience, apparently indestructible.

The kit also comes with 6 multi colored, rewritable disks. That's 600 MB of storage, which is a lot more than usually comes with these devices. Moreover, the color disks are nice as I can color code disks to companies I'm visiting and quickly and easily get the one I want, get things set up and get rolling.

The other thing I like about this system is that the way these devices work, you can use a 100 MB disk on a 250 MB disk drive, but not vice-versa.I have a 250 in my PC and do my heavy work on that and download the specific files I need to the 100MB disks for road warrior duty.

So, all in all what you get is a very easy, reliable and flexible system that you can use virtually anywhere.

So, get this puppy, clean up your hard drive and get more productive! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for backups
We have several Peerless drives along with 10 extra 10g disk plus 5 extra 20g disk, all used for backups. The drives replaced the discounted several Ditto Max tape backup units and have been working for over 8 months with only minor software issues. Installation is a snap, as for the speed difference, yes the Firewire is about 5 times faster then the USB, Our USB drives Avg. transfer rate is around 30MB per second and the Firewire drive is around 130MB per second.

I disagree with one of the former reviewers who said he feels that Iomega Drives are flakey.I have run 250MB Zip drives both ext and int for several years w/o problems. This new peerless is easy to install and use, it's speed is fairly fast with USB 1.1 and will no doubt be even faster with USB 2.0 when it becomes widely available.A 7GB back-up of my entire Hard Drive took only 110 min with my USB 1.1 connection. As I understand it; changing to a firewire interface will require only the replacement of the base unit. The receptacle and Disks can be used with any base.I disconnected my tape back-up drives and put them in storage!!!

    Editorial Review

Is your hard disk running out of room? Do you need to protect your valuable data? Consider Iomega's Parallel Port Zip 100 drive, an inexpensive and portable external disk drive.

Iomega says it has sold over 100 million of its 100 MB Zip disks, the floppy companions to the Zip 100 drive, and we believe them based on how easy it was for us to set up and use the Zip 100. We just plugged it in, connected a cable to our PC's parallel port, dropped in the CD-ROM, and followed the setup wizard.

The CD-ROM comes with the necessary software to make the Zip 100 act like any other drive on your PC--except the Zip 100 has a 100-MB storage capacity. We set the drive up on our test machine and copying files to and from drive F was just as easy as it was on drive A or C.

You can still use your printer with the Zip 100, as the external drive includes its own parallel port. Iomega recommends that you connect no more than one additional device to the Zip 100, but in our test, we "daisy chained" three peripherals--a printer connected to a scanner connected to the Zip 100 connected to our PC--without encountering any device conflicts.

We used the included 1-Step Backup and 1-Step Restore utilities to back up and restore several hundred megabytes of an old Pentium's hard disk. The process was entirely intuitive and flawless but slow. We did not even approach the claimed 25-MB-per-minute performance, but that's just the way peripheral life is when you're using a parallel port.

The Zip 100 is self-contained, and if you take along the parallel cable and AC power supply, it becomes portable. However, the real convenience comes from the Zip disks themselves. The disks have a tough plastic shell and come in a CD-type jewel box, so little protective precautions are required as you exchange data with Zip-owning friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars old technology, but still useful
If your computer has a USB port, you should definitely get a USB Zip drive or flash drive because this parallel-port Zip drive is really slow. However, most old computers (i.e. those made before 1997) do not have a USB port or CD-RW drives, and so this Zip drive is the ideal way for transferring data to and from such computers.100MB Zip discs are pretty cheap, too.But keep in mind that this drive won't recognize 250MB discs. If you think you might need to use those discs in the future, get a 250MB Zip drive instead.

Iomega 10918 Zip 250 MB Parallel Port
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Remember when floppy drives ruled the land of backup storage? With hard drives becoming ever more cavernous and file sizes becoming more bloated each year, it's a wonder those atrociously slow floppy drives still come standard on every computer. Maybe it's time you moved up to something faster, better, and more capacious. A Zip 100, you say? Maybe last year. But why bother with that when you can get a Zip 250?

As you likely have gathered from the name, Iomega's Zip 250 uses 250 MB disks for incremental data backup. Since the media is removable, you can buy new disks when you need more storage instead of buying an entirely new drive. The 250 MB capacity is a much more reasonable standard for shuttling around files than the 1.44 MB diskettes used by a typical floppy drive.

You might be worried about purchasing a drive that uses a parallel interface, as that's the port most printers occupy. Iomega thoughtfully has designed the Zip 250 with a pass-through port, meaning you can attach the drive to the PC and then attach a printer to the Zip drive. It worked flawlessly in our tests. The drive comes with both an AC adapter and a parallel cable, along with one 250 MB Zip disk--everything you need to get started.

Zip drives always have been designed well, and the Zip 250 is exceptional in this regard. There's a well on the side for the power plug so it doesn't protrude from the jack. This makes it possible to stand the drive on its side if it's taking up too much space lying flat.

Zip products have been around long enough that the software for them has had plenty of time to mature. The included CD-ROMs contain useful tools like Copy Machine, which lets you copy a Zip disk using a single Zip drive, and a one-step backup/restore utility, which easily backs up files from your hard drive. We also liked the included Norton Zip Rescue Disaster Recovery software, which lets you make a working backup copy of your Windows installation so you can easily restore it if the system goes bad. It works much better than the Startup Disk utility included with Windows 95 and Windows 98.

The main drawback to the parallel-port Zip 250 is its abysmal transfer rate. Peaking at 0.8 MB per second, we're talking at least five minutes for a 250 MB transfer. That's under perfect circumstances, and we all know how often computer users encounter perfect circumstances. Regardless, it's better than the 1.44 MB floppy drive it replaces, and most users won't need to transfer more than a few megabytes worth of data at a time. --T. Byrl Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars Does a really fine job!
I've now owned my 250 parallel port zip drive for over three years and could not manage without it.Yes it might not be as fast as some of the newer models but its the over all storage that I am please with.I use both the 100 and 250 zip disks and store a fair amount of data and photos. This machine has never let me down and I am very pleased with it!I now use it on my Windows XP without a problem although it was in the market place before XP was around.Good overall quality!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Iomega drive engineers need a dope-slap
My Zip 100 suffered from the "Click of Death" and I lost about five disks and the whole drive before I learned on the Internet about this well-known problem.

I gave Iomega my email address when I registered my drive but they didn't tell me that using their well-documented defective drives ruins the disk with loss of all data.

But, I had to get my data off, so I bought a Zip 250 and today I had the Click of Death again with total loss of data and a ruined expensive disk. Arrggh!

Needless to say, I would NEVER recommend a Zip drive and I am planning on forever boycotting Iomega.

And, if you happen to run into a Zip drive engineer who designed this turkey, please give him or her a (gentle) dope slap for me.

Who at Iomega thought this piece of engineering garbage was suitable for valuable data?

(If you are tempted to by a Zip, anyway, search for "Click of Death" ...before buying a Zip drive. I wonder how many countless gigabytes of data have been lost?)

Do yourself a favor, set up any back-up(s) just before you go to bed. Backing up on any Iomega external device is the equivalent of watching paint dry. You can however use that time to see if you're one of the lucky few that can get decent tech support from Iomega. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peerless and painless?
With 20 Gigabytes that can fit inside your pocket, Iomega has finally released a product that is in fact without peer.

Unlike Iomega's past products, I didn't even need the manual because of the no-hassle installation. After I backed up nearly 7 gigs without a problem in about an hour and a half,it became clear that of all the back up solutions around, this one is the ultimate. The question is will it become popular enough so that it's not just a back up, but useful as a portable storage device as well. If it does, and if the Peerless can avoid the various problems of past Iomega drives, it may just obviate recordable DVD's in all their annoying formats. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product for r/w speed + reliability
This is a great unit for backups and read/write data. The throughput is one of the best I've seen for removable storage devices. The only wait time is at the disk spin boot up/down.Make sure you set your preferencesfor no spin down if you access the Jaz often.

I've had mine over a yearand it hasn't given me any problems. The disks perform flawlessly - theyshould at the premium price.I use it for file and application backups -both PC (98/NT) and Mac.I haven't had any problems with read/writetransfer.If you do any video or animation - this is a must buy, unlessyou intend to lug around an external harddrive.Personally, I've had greatproduct experiences with all 'external' Iomega products.Internal productsare another story...

My only pet peave is the mega thick cord if you goSCSI.1) Because the standard cord that it ships with, it limits theplaces you can place your drive - especially if you have no case cover. 2)It is a true struggle to wrestle it gently without tearing out your scsicard + your other daisy chained peripherals.

The price for this unit isvery good - however, I've seen 1gig Jaz for around $100 refurbished.Bewary though, I've seen the 1 gigs in many repair shops (I'm unsure of whatthe symptoms are though). Also, watch out for the transformer - there wasa recall about a year ago on the units catching fire; check Iomega's sitefor this info.

Got this drive for an original iMac back in the winter of 1998.It worked just fine until 2002 when the eject function stopped working and it wouldn't accept any disks. It wasn't worth going through the trouble to get fixed, so a new model was purchased.

Mine's been working flawlessly since I bought it in early 2000. I understand the newer models are bus-powered. If for some reason you can't have a power strip, that's a concern, but I do wish the AC adapter was smaller.

I've never found Zip drives to be very speedy, despite the name, but this particular drive is quite slow and quite loud.

However, in its defense, it is extremely reliable even though I've dropped it and knocked it over several times. It doesn't take up much space on my desk. It is so lightweight and flat that I can throw it in the pocket of my laptop case and take it anywhere.
