Sony DAV-FC7 Dream Home Theater System with 5-Disc DVD Player
Average Customer Review: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics

Editorial Review

Looking for a home theater system with more style than bulky black boxes can offer? Do complicated setups make your head hurt? Sony's DAV-FC7 Dream system may be the reality for your home-theater fantasies. The compact set features a slot-loading five-disc DVD-Video changer with built-in surround-receiver abilities and color-coded speaker terminals, five satellite speakers, and a separate subwoofer designed to work in concert to deliver spectacular video quality and exhilarating, full-bodied surround sound from both DVD and Super Audio CD (SACD) music sources.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DAV-FC7 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Choose from progressive-scan component-video outputs, composite-video, or S-video outputs. (Older TVs may require an RF modulator or video switcher to convert composite- or S-video to a threaded RF coaxial jack.)

Whether watching a DVD or discovering the sonic benefits of SACD, you'll enjoy the DAV-FC7's outstanding, 100-watts-per-channel audio performance (across left, center, right, left/right surround, and subwoofer outputs) from Sony's S-Master full-digital amplifier. Depending on the discs, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound, using a high-resolution 1-bit converter to exceed the quality potential found in the standard 16-bit compact disc. For added convenience, the system also offers MP3 file playback and JPEG image CD slideshows so you can get the most from your favorite digital media right in the comfort of your living room.

After just minutes of setup time, you can enjoy the DAV-FC7 from the repose of your easy chair with the supplied easy-to-operate Remote Commander remote control. Auxiliary connections include secondary composite- and S-video sources for a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR and a headphone jack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Aware!
Sony isn't what it use to be! BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY or PAY for repairs when the manufacture warranty is up. Sony customer service reps state that Sony entertainment systems should last longer than 1 year and 2 weeks, but (& it's a bit one), in the age of "digital" to be assured of the unit lasting longer than that, you should purchase the extended warranty (as an insurance policy, just like life insurance for your kids because you never know when they're going to die - really....that was actually said to me by a Sony customer service rep). Also told that Sony is superior quality over "disposable" systems that cost less, but what does that matter if the system doesn't work after a year.
My conclusion is you might as well buy a cheaper unit and replace every year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought mine used... but It works great!
I bought this system a year ago piece by piece. It only cost me $120 total. I got the receiver used, the sub used, and satellites new. I know it was a risky move to do so especially that it was used and the reviews about this system have not been good.

But the audi and video is great. The system is great. I haven't had any substantial problems with it. My only complaint is that inserting and ejecting discs take some time to get used to and its kinda slow. But I usually have my top 4 CDs/DVDs in there and and keep the 5th slot ready for quick access.

So yeah, for the amount of money that I bought it for, it's definitely a steal. But most of you probably also bought it retail. Well, the reason I got it is because I saw it in my brother-in-law's condo and I loved it. He said that he was satisfied with it and upto now he still hasn't had problems with it.

I hope this helps.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Design and Functionality but Technical Difficulties
Nice Design and Functionality but Technical Difficulties

I was tired of separate stereo units for a receiver/dvd/cd players, each with their own remote, wires, etc.

I like the packaging and functionality of the Sony unit (DAV-FC7)I bought but have had two separate problems in less that two years.

The first one was when a CD got stuck in the 5 disk changer.I think it was partially my fault from tipping the unit forward with CDs in it.I took the cover off and was fixed it with a little nudge.

Now, a year later, I have two simultaneous problems- it won't shut down (the "Standby" issue that another reviewer posted on) and it won't accept/eject CD/DVDs.

I just got off the phone with Sony and they gave me two options;

1. Ship it to them and pay $130 for the repair plus shipping

2. Drive it to the nearest service center fifty miles away.

Shipping it is unappealing because I neither have the original shipping box, nor do I have the time to deal with it.I would also be without a system for two weeks.

I would have preferred the drop off option, but there is no way I'm doing a 100 mile round trip for this.I live in San Francisco which you would think would have some type of certified repair centers.

The net is that it's a good product with questionable quality and lame service options if you have a problem.Good luck! ... Read more

Samsung DVD-V3650 Progressive Scan DVD/VCR Combo
by SAMSUNG
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $169.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Samsung's slim, stylish, titanium-finished DVD-V3650 DVD/VCR combo is perfect for all your favorite movies and music. It features VHS recording and playback, high-end component-video DVD outputs, built-in MP3/WMA decoding, and compatibility with JPEG image CDs and Kodak Picture CDs so you can enjoy a slideshow of your digital pictures right on your television. This model also includes front-panel audio/video inputs to facilitate hookup with a camcorder or gaming console.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-V3650 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The VCR delivers digital auto tracking, hi-fi stereo sound, and quasi-S-VHS (SQPB) playback, which lets you view S-VHS cassettes--normally only playable on high-end S-VHS machines--in standard VHS resolution. A handy feature called Jet Picture Search maintains a clear image while whizzing through tapes at seven times normal speed for SP tapes and 21 times normal speed with SLP recordings. Intro scan, meanwhile, locates the start of each separate recording on a tape and plays the first five seconds before fast-forwarding to the next start point. This handy feature simplifies the process of assessing and labeling unmarked tapes (admit it: you have several, at least).

Top-of-the-line component-video outputs (for DVD only) help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring DVD compatibility with nearly any television. The VCR output is composite-video and RF only. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs for both DVD and VCR components channels audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound DVD signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Another handy feature is EZ View letterbox eliminator, which lets you enjoy full-screen pictures on 4:3 aspect-ratio TVs--even when you're watching widescreen DVDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung DVD-V3650 Suits Us.
I'm glad I didn't listen to most of the reviews here.If you are just a normal person who isn't expecting to get a $600 Combo Unit for this price, you'll love it.

I purchased a Panasonic Home Theatre system 3 years ago and have had nothing but problems with it.It got so bad, in fact, that we needed to buy a new DVD player because the Panasonic would only recognize ANY DVD about 25% of the time.

Enter the Samsung DVD-V3650.We had an old Phillips/Mag VCR which had its nasty quirks, too.It made sense to get one unit.

I don't care much for the Samsung DVD-V3650's color. But that's not the important thing.I digress. We thought our TV was giving us "Wavy refresh rate things" going up and down our screen, but found with the new Samsung DVD-V3650 we no longer had them.

I like the fact that it has digital audio out jacks (optical and component). When I record a show, I like that I have a 30 second FFW button.I like that I can record and watch a DVD at the same time.Easy set up, yet pretty thorough.

We are very happy with this Samsung. My first with this company.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Samsung DVD3650 combo unit
I am disappointed in the unit.It was advertised to have VCD playback ability. It will not even recognize any VCD's at all.I give it 2 stars only because the progressive component output is a feature I was after too.It is a very quirky unit though. When using the progressive DVD output you are only able to program or view the VCR menu from the DVD component output even though the VCR is only output on composite or RF modulated outputs.Big dissapointment for a Samsung product.Had counted on it playing back VCD's so now it is only good for a guest bedroom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Close, but no cigar
It took me a while to make up my mind about this unit.In general, I've had good luck with Samsung products (printer, cell phone) so I thought I'd give the DVD-3650 a try. I wanted to add DVD capability to my family room system, but didn't want to add another box.So this unit went in, and the VCR I was using went to the bedroom.

At first, I liked the unit overall; I'm fine with the remote; the buttons aren't too small for me, and I have big hands. The picture on the DVD is as good as necessary for a 30" TV.The VCR picture with pre-recorded tapes is OK.I like the access to manual tracking adjustment on the remote. And I haven't had any functional problems with it (over 3 months).

But little things bug me.I use VHS index search a lot, since I make compilations of several kids films on one tape to reduce bulk on trips. On the Samsung, you have to go deep into the menus to get to index search, instead of it being directly on the remote. When you finally do get to it via the menu, it is only available as introscan fwd or rev; you can't set it to search, for example, two indexes forward and start playing.Plus, it only searches at about 8x playback speed, so it's not much faster than just using scan during playback and searching manually. Its a totally lame implementation of what should be a standard feature.

Other minor quibbles; two vertical ribs on the VCR tape door that are apparently for aesthetics make it HARDER to insert a tape correctly. Not a big deal for an adult, perhaps, but a major frustration for a 4 year old, and there is NO good reason for them to be there. When the remote is in the VCR mode, the mute button becomes the VCR audio input select button.Since I use the VCR tuner for watching TV on a regular basis, this is a pain; I have to switch the remote back to TV function, press mute; press it again when the commercial is over, then press VCR again if I want to channel surf. And how often does the average person want to switch the audio input on a VCR anyway?Ever?THAT is something that should be in a menu.

Also, not a problem for me, but could be for many purchasers are the very limited number of TV brands controllable via the remote, far fewer than most other multibrand remotes I've seen.It would be a good idea to download the manual from the Samsung site to make sure your TV is listed before purchasing if you want to use this feature.

More significantly, I've recently discovered the VCR seems to be abnormally sensitive to anti-copy schemes; tapes I made from a DVD on another VCR using a Sima video stabilizer that play perfectly on that and every other VCR I own, have horizontal purple stripes on the Samsung.

All in all, if it played copied tapes properly, I'd be willing to put up with its other weaknesses. But as it is, even though I'm now stuck with it (didn't discover that problem until after Amazon's return time limit expired), I regret this purchase. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted....
We had this DVD player for about 3 months and then one day we no longer had picture but could hear that the movie was playing.Customer service was contacted but did not reply.Based on the reviews from other customers it sounds like this is a common problem which is only treatable by the customer paying additional money in shipping and labor....

1-0 out of 5 stars Died after 6 months
Within 6 months of purchase the video on this unit began going screwy. This progressed as time went on until it became unusable. Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Price, But Mine Doesn't Work
The Apex AD2600 DVD Player that I purchased from Amazon has quit working. As far as I can tell it only worked properly once or twice. Now it will only play the audio portion of a DVD, without video. I have tried hooking it to different TV's, using different video cables, and different DVD's. My conclusion: it doesn't work. At least it was relatively "cheap". I won't so much mind throwing it away. THIS WILL BE THE LAST APEX PRODUCT I BUY! ... Read more

Panasonic SC-HT700 CD/DVD Home Theatre Sys
by Panasonic
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $349.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: April 2003. This home theater system includes the world's slimmest 5-Disc DVD changer, as well as a six-speaker system.

The SC-HT700 handles the audio end of a home theater, giving you surround sound decoding, amplification, and playback through a specially matched six-speaker system (left, center, right, left and right surround, and low-frequency subwoofer). The five-disc carousel system's DVD-Audio playback makes it adept at music as well as movies, offering super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs provide multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

DVD movies will look and sound great through the system's 54 MHz/10-bit video decoder, video depth enhancer, progressive-scan video output (for use with high-definition and HD-ready televisions), and Dolby Digital and DTS discrete 5.1-channel surround decoding and rendering. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The speaker set includes four satellite speakers (front and rear left and right) powered by 45 watts each, a 90-watt center-channel speaker (critical for handling most of a movie's dialogue), and a powerful, 170-watt subwoofer specially designed for unobtrusive placement. All speakers are magnetically shielded to protect your TV from distortion induced by the speakers' magnetic fields. In addition, a digital-synthesized FM/AM tuner lets you listen to your favorite radio stations. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from Panasonic!
Customer Service - the Panasonic website claims this is very important to them. I had my home theater only 3-4 months when a VCR tape got stuck. I has now been at the service center for almost 4 months! When I am lucky enough to get a response from Panasonic (which is rare), they make promises of completion and/or replacement. But promises won't play the DVD's my family would have liked to watch together over the holidays. When we finally got through to the customer service center on the phone, they had the nerve to hand up on us twice. IF YOU WANT A COMPANY TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS - STAY AWAY FROM PANASONIC!!! I have truly given up hope of even getting my home theater back from the Panasonic service center.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS PRODUCT IS TERRIBLE IN PERFORMANCE
I CANNOT BELIEVE PANASONICS ENGINEERS ALLOWED THIS ITEM TO BE
PRODUCED AND PLACED ON THE MARKET. THE SOUND IS EXCELLENT HOWEVER
THE MECHANICAL FUNCTIONS SPELL DISASTER. I FOUND THIS UNIT TO BE SUBSTANDARD. AFTER JUST SIX MONTHS OF VERY LOW USAGE THE UNIT BLINKS ON AND OFF AND THEN SHUTS DOWN. RE-PLUGGING THE ELECTRIC CORD BRINGS IT BACK TO LIFE FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN IT DOWN AGAIN.
THE EXTREMELY HIGH NUMBER OF UNITS THAT I SEE FORSALE ARE ADVERTIED AS RE-FURBISHED THEREFORE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE CALLING THIS PRODUCT AN EXTREME FAILURE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have owned THREE.......And considering a fourth

I have owned three of these (currently have two ...the first one was stolen) This is a great product for the money (got all of mine for $260 or less) Have had mine for about 7 months use them all the time with no problems.
Very easy to set up, good sound, great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for busy people and families
This product is great. We now have two. Transferring shows between them or to the computer is a breeze. Last Thanksgiving we had a slideshow of all of the pictures we'd taken in the last year showing on our TV in the background. This was a hit with everyone, especially with family we don't see often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, problems with product, lots of hidden gotchas
I never had a DVR (aside from my computer) before, so when I finally managed to get my Tivo all hooked up, I was really impressed. I especially love the "Season Pass" feature which will pick out all the times your favorites program airs, and let you schedule recording for all of them in a few clicks.

But then the headaches began...

(1.) First of all, how many of us have the telephone line near our TVs? Normally, the TV and electronic gadgets are on one side of the room, and the phone is on the other - right? Tivo needs a phone line to get it's program information - at least initially. So if your house is configured like mine, be prepared to have phone line extensions strewn all across your living room while you spend up to a day downloading and installing all the program information by phone.

So of course, I almost began to drool when I read in the Manual that you can actually connect the Tivo to your local or wireless network.

(2.) Problem is, you most likely will NOT be able to connect your Tivo to your local or wireless network. I took Tivo's own approved list of hardware (direct network adapters or wireless receivers) to my local geek toy store, and bought the top recommended networking connection on the list. That didn't work, so I returned it and bought the next recommended item on Tivo's list. That didn't work either, so over the course of the next two weeks I tried three (yes, 3) more. Nothing. I finally gave up, and had to buy a long extension cord for my phone line and install it more perminent-like.

(3.) The main reason I'm here today, is because I found this page while searching for an explanation to the weird high pitched whistle noise my Tivo began making last night (after only 2 months of ownership). Turns out this is apparently an increasingly common problem - which I never heard of until today - and even more unfortunately seems to indicate that my Tivo will be totally dead in the next few days. Right now, it's literally delaying everything I do (trying to view my cable box's program guide, etc) by 30 seconds or more (the normal lag time should be around 1 or 2 seconds)

So, since I've already paid for the lifetime membership, I'm now searching for a relatively cheap way I can fix the problem myself. Do I need to replace the harddrive, the case fans, ..or what? By the way, if Tivo goes out of business, how will I get my program guide? Tivo doesn't grab the FREE TV Guide data from your cable like the no-subscription-required Panasonics can.

(4.) Oh, and also wanted to warn people about one more thing that only starts happening after you've had your Tivo for a few weeks - which is actually intentional on the part of Tivo - but which isn't mentioned anywhere in any of their manuals or documentation, for obvious reasons...

After a few weeks (if your Tivo still works), you'll start to get little on-screen pop-up alerts RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAM which stay there for atleast 30 seconds until you click it or patiently wait for it to go away. And what are these prompts? ADVERTISING which actually is made to look like a really important subscriber announcement from Tivo. Maybe it's important to THEM, but I'd rather NOT see it in the middle of my TV screen. Actually, that's yet another example of Tivo's dumb implimentation: You'll only see this advertising if you're watching live TV instead of the recorded programming... and since most people with Tivos are watching the recorded programs instead of live TV, Tivo's sponsors are paying for ads that few people will ever see... Great business ideas - yes?)

In addition to these on-screen ads which interrupt your viewing, when you go to your Tivo menu, you'll find atleast TWO links to advertisements. The really bad thing about these links in particular is that they are positioned in the place where your other normal Tivo menu options are listed. So instead of selecting your "To Do List" or upcoming recordings, you might accidently find yourself watching a series of advertisements - WHICH YOU CANNOT DELETE OR REMOVE.

OK, so that's all I have to say at this point. Seems to me that Tivo had a great idea, but terrible implimentation. I don't know about their customer service, but I probably also won't even bother, if it's going to cost me $100 to $150 to ship them back their own defective product anyway.

If I can't fix the Tivo, and I'm not in the mood to pay double-or-triple in trying to get it fixed, then it's apparently just become one nice looking but useless paperweight... to which I have a lifetime subscription.

1-0 out of 5 stars aviod at all costs!!
I got this for christmas, my first reaction was "awesome i've wanted this for awhile now!" so me and a friend started to hook this up the other day we started at 3:30 PM we finally got it hooked up at 8:30!! yep 5 hours, and i had to drive to radio shack to buy a bigger phone cable, because we brought the tv and the tivo into the kitchen to try and hook it up there but we couldn't because we needed the digital cable box... ok fine so we started over and it still didn't work! at this point im starting to get really angry we head to radio shack and get everything we need and finally we hook it up only to find out the six button on the remote doesn't work! then i tried to fast forward threw the commercials its so slow that buy the time you did you miss half of the program your supposed to be watching!! i can go on forever about this bad product... just skip it ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Small but great
I have one of these and I listen to it everywhere I go, great sound quality and good battery life. I have run out of space however, so I would recommend a newer one with a larger hard drive.

My Sony mini-disc player died after a short life (moment of silence). So when I got a new job, the toy of choice was an iPod. What a difference!

The bad as compared to the mini-disc player is that the iPod doesn't have an LCD display remote control. So with so many songs, it's hard to blindly navigate if your iPod is stashed away. Hopefully Apple will create such a remote. Otherwise, it wins over the mini-disc player hands down!

The 3 lines of music data display the song title, artist, and even album! And the sound...oh boy. I feel like I'm at a concert! Excellent sound! You can also tweak the sound with the equalizer.

Once they make that LCD remote to make navigating easier, it'll be perfect. ... Read more
