Sony PEGA-GC10 Game Controller for PEG-NX, NR, T, SJ, SL Series

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-have if you play action-arcade games on your Clie.
Those of you who've played plenty of action/arcade style games on a PDA knows that the PDA buttons simply do not cut it when trying to weave your fighter plane through an onslaught of bullets or trying to make your way through a Super Mario style platformer. What's even worse is that PDA buttons are not built to take the kind of button-abuse that often comes from playing those games and can get worn out fairly quick.

I wanted to play games on my PDA without breaking the buttons so with that in mind, I decided on getting a Clie SJ33 and the GC10.The controller works very well.I've only run across a couple games that does not work well or don't work at all with the game controller and both of them work better (gameplay-wise) with the stylus control. The GC10 is a necessity if you have a Gameboy emulator on your Clie.Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

The extra battery drain was not as big an issue as reviews from other sights led me to believe. It does drain slightly faster but only very slight and usually when it does drain quickly, it's because you're playing a game that uses a lot of power to begin with (games with lots of action) and because you're using a game controller, you're probably playing it longer too.

The extra strap is almost useless. The instructions say it's to prevent the controller from accidentally falling from PDA but the controller's grip is so good it's much more likely you'll drop the PDA before dropping the controller. The strap is useful for dangling your controller from your belt or backpack so that you can have easy access if you get the urge to play.

I have yet to find a game that supports the X/Y buttons. The instructions says they're "programmable" but I have yet to find a way to get them to work with any game. Not that big a deal since most games don't use that many buttons but it is wasted potential.

The GC10 includes a copy of Columns and some game demos. The Columns gameplay is spot on and gives you something to use the controller with right out of the box. It'll definitely give you the good feeling of using a real game control rather than the cumbersome PDA buttons. :D

Pros: Gamepad button layout, very sturdy, extra buttons for menus and going back to the main PDA screen, hold switch, securely grips your PDA so it's very unlikely to fall off, comes with free game Columns (and it's high-res!).
Cons: Does not work with all games, slightly faster battery drain, cannot charge & use controller at same time, X & Y buttons are useless, does not fit all Clies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good item but causes conflicts
I got this item cheap because I really like the game columns, but once you install the game controller it causes conflicts with your Hot Sync function. I tried several times and this kept occurring. Sorry. Unless you just play a lot of games on your handheld it just isn't worth the hassle of having to reinstall your cradle drivers after you have used the controller. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
This kit comes with a multi function pen , a few screen protectors and a case.

    Whats good
The case is good fit for my tungsten E.
Has a holder for the stylus that comes with the kit.

    Whats not
    The multifunction pen
The paint starts peeling off in a few days.
Also the pen rattles while writing.
Screen protectors are already cut to various PDA screen sizes. Hence I will not be able to use most of them.

    Overall
    The case is good
    Screen protectors Average
    PenAverage to Poor

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
The case is not so good. It is open at the top and bottom. There is a velcro strip inside so if you put the other side of velcro (not supplied) on your PDA, it won't fall out.

The 4-1 stylus sucks. It is hard to get out what you want. It is hit or miss on twisting the clicker and pusing in. I usually get the black pen. It takes many tries to get the stylus point or the pencil.

The kit includes 10 protector sheets all for different PDA models. Some are pretty similar, so you might be able to get 6 for your PDA. But not likely.

There is nothing I like about this Kit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good speed, poor network recognition
The LAN card worked great on my two known networks, but was a bit of a hassle when looking to add a network connection. It was very smooth and quick once connected. Though it's time consuming setting up an unknown connection, it works extremely well once operating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with AvantGo. Lacks software features
I use this card with my Sony Clie NX70V/U.It's relatively easy to install and get up and going with a program like AvantGo or the browser that comes with the Clie.I think the software could use some improvement.I had to manually go in and tell it what network to connect to.The software doesn't proactively go out and see what wi-fi networks are available. You have to fill in the network ID manually.

So for instance if I go to a hotel that has wi-fi, and I want to connect to their network, first I have to figure out the name of their wi-fi network so that I can attempt to connect. As vs. my laptop with a LinkSys wi-fi card where I stick in my wi-fi card, and it automatically goes out and tells me what networks are available and I can just click on the one I want to connect to.

If the software was more functional, it would also be nice as a wi-fi hotspot identifier. It would be nice to walk into an airport or hotel and quickly identify whether or not there is a wi-fi hotspot using my PDA without having to boot up the laptop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only a partial WiFi solution
This works very well if all you want to do is connect to your already configured home network. It does not, however, include some common WiFi tools, such as the ability to pick an access point from a list, test signal strength, or use newer security features. It's hard to configure: you'll need to know (and enter exactly) the SSID of your access point.Good luck trying to use this with a public access point (paid or free).Unless you do so research before you go out (e.g., the common SSID used by Starbucks), you'll have no way of knowing how to connect.

Also note that this is more expensive than other WiFi CF cards. However, this is your only option for Sony Clie devices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Warning! This game does not work on iPAQs
I installed this on my iPAQ, but soon found that it was not compatible.I did play monopoly on my friends PDA and it was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
If you wait in line all the time, or if you are at airports all the time, buy this card. It will occupy your time. Both games are identical to their physical counterparts and they are color as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Games
Both Monopoly and Scrabble work great. I have a color PalmOS PDA and love both of them. I was afraid that the screen size would limit the functionality, but that turned out not to be the case. In fact, I think it is easier than on my PC screen programs with 4 and 16 times the number of pixels -- superior design went into implementing it on the PDA version!

My son, 9 years old, also loves playing both. Of course, he sometimes hits the "accept word" (after spell-checker flags it) when he spells words wrong just to get high points (e.g., "XJQVY"), but he usually spells them right and this helps in his vocabulary and spelling.

Monopoly is just as easy and has helped my game playing tremendously. I am not thinking about going pro, but if I were, I would certainly have this game in my arsenal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Only for smart people
I've been using this pen for a half-year.It's unlike other pens in that you have to hold the pen horizontally for it to correctly select the pencil, stylus or red/black ink pen you wish to use.It also a comfortable pen to hold while working with the pocket pc....much better than the toothpick stylus that came with my pocket pc.I'm actually here online to purchase one for a friend.

Once you realize you have to be smarter than the pen, you'll enjoy this 4 in 1 Stylus.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Buy
I thought I would use this pen as a replacement for my Belkin 4 in 1, Bad Bad idea. The black started peeling off within a week of having this stupid pen. Black and Red ink is no good (fade away). Stay away from this pen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad once you figure out the trick to using this pen
Another reviewer indicated that you have to hold this
pen horizonatally to get reliable device changes. This
seems to be the case.My stylus/pen did not have any
mark on the end that you click so I put one on with
a permanent marker.I found that as long as this mark
is "up" with the pen horizontal, I get reliable pen
changes.Perhaps this stylus/pen relies on gravity to
work. While quirky, this is not an issue once you
figure out the trick.I've not had this long enough
for the paint to peel yet.I got this on sale for
$3.99 and I'm happy so far at that price. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hopeless IR Keyboard
What a piece of crap. This item is priced ~50% less than competitors - now I know why. The item simply would not communicate with my iPaq 4355. I tried every angle possible to get the keyboard to communicate with the PDA. Don't waste your money on this item.

4-0 out of 5 stars Setup in a minute...if you know this trick
I overall like it. I took some time to figure out a way to
set it up quickly. Here is the trick. Put your PDA on the
stand, and set the mirror right(don't worry about being too
accurate on the angle, it's ok). Open an edit software on
your PDA. Use one hand to hold the keyboard up very close
to the mirror. Use another hand to type any key, you should
lock the signal right away. Keep typing while slowly putting
the keyboard down. If you lost signal, move keyboard up to
relock the signal. I bet you'll get it in 3 tries. I had
worried about the button battery also, but I found out it's
only about 2 bucks, search it on yahoo or bizrate.com. With
this trick, and think about the price, I really can complain
    too much...

3-0 out of 5 stars Definite Room for Improvement
This keyboard, when folded and in its case, is slightly smaller a woman's hand (aka my hand). Still, alot of its bulk does not seem necessary. There is a thick silver plastic attatched shell around the actual keyboard that makes it harder to depress the space key and adds to the size greatly. The keyboard itself, however, is well made and not unattractive. Unfortunately, it uses button batteries instead of the AAA employed by the Micro Innovations wireless keyboard model.

The stand that comes with the keyboard for your PDA looks like something from a dollar store. It is at once the flimsiest, cheapest, most pathetic piece of 'equipment' I have ever seen. The stand folds up, in a complicated puzzle-like way, into a single thick flat black box the size of two credit cards. Figuring out how to set it up the first time was an exercise in patience...I was mainly worried about snapping the thin joints attatched to the piece of reflective plastic that serves as a mirror.

The wirelessness of this device is accomplished through communication through IRA transmission. Unfortunately, it takes FOREVER to find the right location for the keyboard so that you can type. I spent ten whole minutes the first time experimentally hitting keys and adjusting the mirror so that the IRA port on my PDA could 'communicate' with the one on the keyboard. It is not easy to set up, I wouldn't suggest this device if you needed to get it out in a hurry...like to take notes for class or something. The fastest way to connect is to type with the PDA upside down with its port pointing directly to the keyboard's port.

Another major problem with the keyboard is the fact that it does not snap into place. Unless it is on a solid surface, the two sides of the keyboard are apt to slide apart and bend in the middle, making it impossible to type with it on the go.

The keyboard comes with a badly made and rather large ugly synthetic leather case with a pocket for the keyboard and one for the stand. ... Read more

How come you can buy this on Sony's site for $9.99?

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Screen Protector Available
I have always been a believer in screen protectors, as it drives me crazy if I have a scratch on an LCD screen. When I bought my Sony Clie NX80, the first accessory I looked for was a screen protector. In the past I have always had a difficult time applying the film membrane (screen protector) and could never eliminate all of the bubbles or air pockets. This Sony screen protector is quite different than any of the others brands I have tried.First, it seems to be a much thicker membrane; and second, you only get one, rather than 10 to 20 in a package.Sony claims that it is reusable (I have not tried that feature yet), where other companies plan on you replacing the film regularly.I had my doubts when I saw how thick the membrane was; but the performance and appearance are great - I do not seem to have any reduction at all in the sensitivity of the touch screen. In addition, it seems much clearer than other protectors I have used. But the greatest improvement over the other screen protectors I have used is the ease of getting a perfect application (no bubbles). My only problem was that I had applied the film crooked on my first try, so I had a slight overlap on one side.I then removed the film and tried again, and once again got a perfect application!I was just astounded how the screen protector virtually disappeared. It seemed to be perfectly clear, and there were no bubbles or air pockets at all.I presume that the thicker membrane, or perhaps an improved adhesive, allow this, but I have never been able to get such a perfect application with any other product of this type I have ever used, and I have tried several other brands.Bottom line, I am accustomed to paying slightly more for a package of perhaps 10 screen protectors as compared to a fairly high price for the one membrane with the Sony product, but to me it is well worth the money.A+ for this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have a cradle, you will need this.
If you want to use a docking cradle you will have to use the power cable that came with the TJ-25 as the cradle does not have power.

If you move around a great deal, then you will need another cable unless you can remember to take the power cable with you.

It does what it is supposed to do but do look at the plug as it looks funny as it is not the same size as the adapter. Just look towards the side and you will see where it needs to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice accessory to have if you need to re-charge often
Useful device to charge my sony clie without the bulky cradle. The cable leading to the interface connector is a bit off-center because the other slot is for the USB cable (not included). This missing component is the USB Hotsync cable, available separately as the PEGA-HS10. I guess one needs to buy several accessories if you want both charge and hotsync while mobile.
The other aspect I like about the portable charger is its capability to be plugged in to any voltage/frequency 100-240V, 50/60Hz.
As I use my clie a lot, with the background light on, my battery does not last me through the long day. This is the reason I bought this portable charger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best PDAs in the market
I've been using my Sony Clie NX80V since a year, and is still impressive the performance of this palm... the swivel screen allows you to use this like a normal PDA or like a laptop, an even better with its small keyboard, convenient for thumb fingers or small hands. I also found amazing the dual (CF and MemoryStick) card reader, and if you buy the WiFi CF card for Clie, you can do everything with this handheld. Besides, it has a lot of convenient software, like the Picsel viewer and NetFront browser. The only software I added is DocumentsToGo, and I can edit my .doc and .xls files (even simple PowerPoint presentations), and still view it in my PC when I plug my Clie to it. The screen is huge, brillant with its wonderful shrinkable Graffiti area, that allows you to add direct access to many applications you use often. Finally the camera is really great (I haven't seen any PDA with a 1.3M pixels built-in camera... and fast), and Sony knows how to make it look beautiful, including the cradle, and the MP3 player sound great, and much better with the hand controller.

It's one of the best products I've ever used

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Goodbye To Sony's US and European PDA Market
I love my Sony Clie, PEG NX80V.I bought it less than a year ago, and the resolution, screensize and vivid display still astound my associates. The performance is quick for PDAs made in 2003, and the product is still superior in technology when compared to most of todays sales.I have to complain that Sony stopped offering online updates (drivers, patches, etc) for this product less than 7 months after releasing it. Now, after current stocks run out, Sony will retreat to ASIA, where they are selling the latest PDA, it's really going to blow you away.
Compare Sony to Palm, and Sony comes in about equal. I recommend buying this product new or used, it has never let me down.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's All About Accessories - The Good and the Bad
In today's world of electronic gadgets, there are two things that really are frustrating:1) Once you buy an electronic gadget - it often is obsolete the next day; 2) You often need to get lots of accessories to get the most use of your gadget. On top of that, when you are ready to buy a replacement gadget to replace the one you want - all of the accessories you bought are suddenly no good. Thus, the dilemma I faced when my old Palm IIIc finally showed signs it was nearing the end of its life was what to buy.I had used my IIIc for 3 1/2 years. During this time, I had such accessories as a Leather Case,A Keyboard, and a Travel Charger. Now as I was viewing what Palm (today) had to offer, I discovered that those nice accessories I owned were suddenly no good because none of the new models that Palm offered were compatible with them. Not a happy camper. As I mention above, this isn't a Palm-specific problem, but a problem with consumer electronics - and something companies in the consumer electronics industry have completely taken advantage of the consumers.

Enter Sony's Clie PEG-NX80V - this is known as Sony's Personal Electronics Organizer. In addition to being a very impressive unit, it did seem to solve some of my immediate problems around accessories, but of-course introduced a new set of accessory problems I did not imagine.

First up the unit itself. It is a beautiful unit that will immediately make a great first impression. It is silver and basically looks like a mini tablet computer. For starters, the unit folds down into its own hard case - so I didn't need to buy any extra cases because this protected the screen (I keep mine in a Day Planner binder, but you still may want a leather cover to prevent case scratches). When you open the unit, you will see a screen and a keyboard - now it looks like a mini laptop. The Keyboard solved my dilemma of having to buy a keyboard (I use mine to enter sales data and really depend on a keyboard - this one works great). Now the cool feature is you can swivel the screen around and fold it back down on top of the keyboard into the traditional PDA view - now its just like a regular PDA. The PEG-NX80V package also comes with a beautiful looking USB cradle in which the back of the cradle is translucent. In addition, the AC Charger unplugs from the cradle and can be plugged into an plug adapter that connects to the unit - now you have your travel charger.Yes, the plug adapter is included. That solved my travel adapter problem (I take it on the road a lot). The unit also has a slot for expanding memory with a Sony Memory Stick or Compact Flash Card as well as connecting a wireless lan card.

There are some other impressive features with this unit. First up the stuff you get out of the box.The unit comes loaded with Palm OS 5.Sony also packages their own version of the Launcher Program - which looks very attractive. The Sony Launcher does get some getting used to, but I like it because it looks good.If you can't get used to it, you can switch to the traditional Palm OS launcher. There is a jog dial on the unit for making scrolling lists very easy. To write, the unit comes with Palm's Graffiti 2, but there is something better - the Decuma Input Handwriting Recognition Software.Decuma Input has a utility where you enter your handwriting and then the unit will recognize your writing.I found the change from standard Graffiti to Graffiti 2 a bit annoying. But Decuma Input is terrific and once you get used to it, you won't go back. The unit will allow you to switch between Decuma Input and Graffiti. The unit comes with an application that will turn your PDA into a Universal Remote Control to use with such devices as a TV, DVD, VCR, etc. Finally the unit comes with a built in voice memo recorder for recording quick voice memos, storing them in the unit and playing them back.Only thing disappointing is a very cheap styled stylus.

As for this being a Personal Electronics Organizer, it has some terrific features - but also some warnings. For starters it has a Built in 1.3 Megapixel Camera with a flash - its only 1.3 Megapixels, so it won't replace your digital camera. It's a nice feature and you can store pictures and do some cool things like put photos in your address book.Be warned - snapping a picture will consume a lot of power from your battery (especially with the flash) - more than you expect.Be also warned, you MUST have a Memory Stick to export/import pictures with your PC and Clie - thus another accessory. There also is a built in MP3 Player (the unit does come with headphones) and a Movie Camera as well.Using the MP3 unit and Movie Camera does require the Use of a Memory Stick - thus this becomes another "required" accessory. The Data Backup Program does also require the Memory Stick. From looking at the specs, it isn't intuitive you need the Memory Stick for these features.

While this is a great unit and it did solve my accessory problems, it created a whole new set of others (namely with the Memory Stick). It is also worth noting to get the Wireless LAN for internet access is a costly accessory as well. However the unit is still very impressive looking and works terrific.Price out what accessories you want and need - then shop carefully.Your bet is to try to get it on sale or for a rebate though to get the most for your money. ...
