5-0 out of 5 stars i love this computer
i'm fourteen and my family has had macs since the first one sold. i bought this laptop around a month ago and am amazed. there is absolutly nothing about it that i do not like. so far the only problem i have had is tiny. when burning cds, the computer tends to get hot, and loud. i would reccommend this laptop for anyone who can afford the rather steep price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from the converted
I've been a Windows/Unix user all my life. This is my first Mac and I love it.

Pros :
- Mac OS X is way more stable than any Microsoft Windows available
- Did you know that Mac OS X is UNIX-based? I love real unix shell.
- Light & small
- Slot-loading optical drive is better than the regular one, IMO
- Wi-Fi 802.11b/g + bluetooth now included
- über-long battery life. My 5-month old battery lasts about 3 hours when I'm just browsing the web (wifi-on, bluetooth-on)
- not likely to get infected by virus/malware/spyware.
- iLife suite included
- supports dual display - I use this PB as a desktop replacement
- high quality soundcard - i've seen some PC laptop that has crappy soundcard. It's bad to the point that your MP3 sound really bad

Cons :
- Admit it, there are less software for Mac OS X. Make sure that you know everything you need has Mac version available. Don't depend on Virtual PC. It's tad slow on this 1.33GHz cpu.
- Software running on Mac is not as optimized as it should.
- This is the cheapest powerbook available. It's LCD screen isn't as good as 15"/17" ones. It's acceptable, reliable but you cannot expect something as good as
- 256 meg of ram is NOT enough for you to run regular software smoothly. Consider adding at least another 256.
- internal fan is sometime annoying when you do heavy graphics/calculation. You cannot watch DVD fullscreen without headphone. It's THAT noisy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I switched!
I was looking into buying a new computer this summer. I needed something very portable, compatible with Windows and of course, stylish. (Style is KEY!) I was working in a very relaxed office setting over the summer in a web development company, and the girl I sat next to is a hardcore Mac addict. She urged me at no end to get a Mac. She let me use her iBook a few times to get a feel for it, and in the end, I blew all the extra money I made last summer and bought a PowerBook (12inch, the only upgrade was to 512MB Ram and an extra battery,).

It has become an invaluable asset, replaceing all of the notebooks and binders I used to carry. It's about 5 pounds, so that's not too horribly heavy, but it does pack some weight if you've also got a yoga mat, lunch and two textbooks to carry as well.

I had used iMacs before in computer labs, but had grown up on PCs. I must say that I am thrilled to have switched. This interface is beautiful to use, easy to pick up and adjust to. With a little bit of tweaking and a few, "Where's that key?" moments, it's become my computer of choice. I've had it for four months, and the biggest stumbling block I've ever had with it is when I pull it out of my backpack to start taking notes and the idiot sitting next to me says, "Ewwwwwww! a Mac!" It is completley compatible with all the Windows programs my groupmates use, so there isn't an issue with file sharing. My friend liked mine so much, that two weeks later when her parents decided to buy her a laptop, she got the same one!

I only have a few dislikes about it. It doesn't come with any port covers, so I can only imagine how easy it might be for a paper clip to get stuck in the CD slot. Same goes for the Ethernet and USB ports. It only has two USB ports, and could certainly use more of those. I don't get the 5 hours of touted battery life; average is about 3.5, but longer if I turn down the brightness. Thankfully it recharges very quickly.

All in all, an awesome purchase that I don't regret. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Canon i80 - Continuing A Tradition Of Fine Printers.
I've owned several Canon portable printers in the past, including the Canon BJC-70, the BJC-80, and two Apple StyleWriter 2200's (BJC-70 bearing the Apple logo). I've also owned several portable printers made by other companies, none really as satisfying as the Canon printers.

I'm now using the Canon i80 (HP zd7000 & Windows XP). This printer clearly evolved from those earlier Canon printers, improving in some ways and not in others. On the positive side, print quality and speed is roughly on par with many desktop printers within this price range. Canon has also greatly reduced, and perhaps even elininated, the problem of the ink jets drying and clogging between print jobs (on earlier BJC models, the ink jets would dry out if the printer wasn't used for a week or so). And, unlike the i70, this printer comes with the multi-voltage power supply needed by international travelers.

Other things have not improved. Like those earlier printers, the i80 suffers from paper feed problems, ranging from paper not feeding at all (unless forced), to multiple sheets of paper feeding at the same time, to paper not feeding straight. Of course, this is more pronounced with very thin or very thick paper (thick envelopes are especially troublesome, often only solved by sharply creasing the envelope edges before using). All this is more of a nuisance than a serious problem, so should not automatically rule out this printer from purchase consideration. It doesn't happen all the time, or even most of the time, and can be reduced with experience.

The price continues to be high, especially with accessories often included with other portable printers (cables, battery attachments, batteries, and so on). If on-site portable printing is truly needed, requiring the purchase of accessories, I would have to recommend another printer with built-in battery. However, if one only needs to easily move a printer between hotel rooms, business meetings, or offices, the performance and convenience of the i80 wins out.

Some things are a mixed bag. The case design of the i80 has improved over earlier Canon models. The paper holder/cover now completely covers the printer, protecting it from dirt/dust or while packed in a bag. However, at the same time, Canon switched that case from a neutral near-black to an oddball copper/tan color which doesn't match any computer I've ever seen. Of course, this doesn't really affect performance, but it is distractingly noticable.

Finally, some things have gotten worse compared to earlier models. The i80 does not properly print some web pages in Internet Explorer without an external plug-in (Easy Web Print), which adds another IE toolbar complete with bright red Canon logo and buttons not matching other toolbar icons. Without this plug-in, the right side of some web pages are cut off. Canon either needs to reduce the intrusiveness of this plug-in or integrate this capability into the print driver as other companies do (the three other printers I now own handle these same web pages properly without a plug-in). Luckily, printing everything else with the i80 is entirely painless.

In conclusion, all portable printers are a compromise offering portable convenience with some inconveniences. The Canon i80 is no exception. However, the inconveniences associated with the i80 are minor, easily outstripped by overall convenience and performance. As such, I can comfortably recommend this printer to any fellow road warrier.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a great little printer!
I would recommend this printer to anyone who is looking for the convenience of having a good quality printer for trips when there is a need to work in a hotel room. The printer is small and compact and actually performs better than expected; it prints remarkable fast. The only challenge I find is periodically more than one piece of paper comes through the printer at the same time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Canon falls short with Apple user
A dual-purpose printer for traveling, works almost to my satisfaction. Printing 4x6 snapshots for friends does not interface well with my Apple PowerBook G4 with OS X Panther, however. Photos are blurry, out of focus, flat with the Canon program. Photos printed using Apple's iPhoto are quite acceptable - even up to 8x10 in most cases. A workaround can be done with Photoshop Elements, but seems a bit unnecessary with a product from Canon. A pricey printer, but functions quite well in my experience, and fits my requirements as all-around printer where laser quality is not an issue. ... Read more

Indulge your personal taste with this handy little French press coffeemaker. Use it at home or take it along to office or school and brew coffee precisely as you like it rather than settling for what you get out of the machine (shudder). Compact (7-1/2 inches high), for carrying in purse, briefcase, or backpack, but sturdy, it's made of tempered glass and durable plastic, with stainless-steel press and bands. A big handle facilitates pouring through its pert little spout. Rinse it out or run it through the dishwasher. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for a superior camera
This is my fourth digital camera in the last twelve months. I am constantly buying new ones in the $300-500 price range and selling them on eBay once they've revealed their flaws to me. Without a doubt, this is the best one I've had and I think it'll stick around for a while. What's good about it:
1. size and style are great; there is nothing that can be improved upon here;
2. the LCD is a nice size without sacrificing the viewfinder;
3. the controls are very easy to access and understand. Though I prefer the point-and-shoot method, I find myself dabbling with the controls a lot and I take better pictures because of it;
4. the time it takes between opening the camera and taking a photo is almost instantaneous. There's no warmup period. Likewise, taking several pictures rapidly is a breeze, no lag time at all;
5. in general, the camera is simple to use. Someone with no experience could pick this up and use immediately; and
6. I wish more cameras would use plain ole AA batteries, but since that's probably never going to happen, Canon's li-on battery is adequate. It lasts a decent amount of time and charges very quickly. The charger is improved in this line from the S410, which was somewhat bigger and more awkward.

And what I don't like:
1. pictures indoors or after dusk just don't turn out that well, regardless of using the nighttime/indoor settings on the camera. I think that the flash is adequate but after all my digital camera trading, have found this to be a universal weakness. It's annoying;
2. no meter for the battery. You get about five pictures once the indicator tells you the battery is on the way out. It's something a lot of people have complained about and doesn't seem like a tough thing for Canon to fix; and
3. the software that comes with the camera is junk. I hate it. I recommend downloading Picasa, which is fabulous, and free.

As for the LCD cracking, that really sucks and I hope it doesn't happen to me. The obvious answer is to pick up a case and cart it around in that. I haven't had any experience with redeye-no more than expected, anyway-or purple fringing. For the price and portability factors, the SD300 can't be beat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too fragile - avoid.
I strongly recommend not buying this camera. What you get in features, you lose in robustness. The battery cover is plastic and flimsy. The worst is the large LCD screen - there is absolutely *no* protection against minor knocks. My screen cracked after two weeks and I honestly have no idea how it happened (and have to pay big money for repairs)

I wish there would be a digital camera that is as robust and well designedas my iPod....

2-0 out of 5 stars LCD screen cracked
I had mine for about 3 weeks before my LCD screen cracked as well. If you find that it is hard to believe, (...). The camera, itself, takes good quality pictures, but the LCD screen is much too fragile. I sent my camera in and they sent me a bill of $114.05. I had heard from other people that they were not willing to waive the fee, but I decided to give it a try anyways. I simply asked the representative why my camera was not covered under warranty and immediately she says, "Okay.. this will be a ONE TIME free repair". So, ifyour LCD screen was cracked.. send it in, give them a call (nicely), and they'll fix it for free. Once I get it back, I'm selling it and buying a different camera. =) ... Read more

Editorial Review

PalmOne stretches the possibilities with the Tungsten T5, the first handheld from PalmOne to utilize flash memory. In addition to a groundbreaking 256 MB of memory, the sleek, slim Tungsten T5 features a high-resolution 320 x 480-pixel screen, a fast 416 MHz Intel Xscale processor, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and a Secure Digital memory card expansion slot. And, of course, the Tungsten T5 features PalmOne's suite of information management applications, the ability to edit Word- and Excel-compatible files, and synchronization with Microsoft Outlook (Windows only).

See a detailed diagram of the PalmOne Tungsten T5's features

Internal Flash Memory
Built for today's mobile professional, the Tungsten T5's 256 MB of memory actually provides 215 MB of user-available memory (55 MB for built-in applications and 160 MB of internal flash drive memory). Connect it to your PC or Mac and use it as you would a USB flash memory drive to transfer data and multimedia files from work to home. To access files stored on the handheld, simply select Drive Mode on the handheld and plug the included HotSync cable into a USB port.

To add files, just drag and drop them from your PC desktop to the new File Transfer application (installed with Palm Desktop; Windows only). A live desktop window gives you instant access to data and information stored on the handheld's internal drive--without the need for synchronizing the handheld to move files.

Multimedia
The included RealPlayer for Palm OS enables you to listen to MP3s stored on optional expansion cards via the built-in speaker on the Tungsten T5 or, for stereo sound, on optional stereo headphones or ear buds. The updated Media application lets you view (and show off) transferred photos and videos.

Display
Unlike the Tungsten T3, which required you to slide the handheld's bottom open to activate the screen's landscape mode, the Tungsten T5's screen offers widescreen viewing at all times. The bright 320 x 480 transreflective TFT color display supports more than 65,000 colors. You can easily switch between portrait and landscape view, as well as open an active input area at the bottom of the screen.

Connectivity and Expansion
With built-in wireless Bluetooth connectivity, you can synchronize the Tungsten T5 with a Bluetooth-enabled computer from across the room (within a range of 10 meters, or approximately 30 feet). But that's just the start. Using a compatible Bluetooth-enabled phone, you can send and receive e-mail and connect to the Web, send multimedia (MMS) or text (SMS) messages, and even automatically dial any number in your handheld's Contact's application. You can also synchronize data the "old-fashioned" way via the USB connection at the base of the handheld.

The Tungsten T5 uses MultiMedia Card and Secure Digital expansion cards, which instantly add software applications, additional memory, large databases, and more without taking up built-in memory space.

Operating System and Software
Veteran Palm OS handheld users will immediately notice the new Favorites view, which provides easy access to applications, files, and folders. The installed Palm OS 5.4 also introduces the Files application, which enables easy navigation among folders and files. It uses the intuitive and easy-to-learn Graffiti 2 writing software to input data into the handheld (as well as an on-screen keyboard). Windows users can synchronize their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:

  • Contacts: Lets you store several addresses for each contact, and with new fields for more phone numbers, multiple e-mail addresses, instant messenger IDs, and Web sites.
  • Calendar: Use the new Agenda view to see upcoming calendar events, tasks due, and important e-mail, and color-code your events to provide an easy way to reference your calendar in the Agenda, Day, Week, and Month views. Take more notes, or synchronize more details from your desktop, in the larger Memos and Notes fields.
  • Tasks: Use tasks with alarms and repeating tasks to set reminders for important commients.
Additional Software
The Tungsten T5 includes Documents to Go 7.0, which provides the ability to create and edit Word- and Excel-compatible files and view and carry PowerPoint files (in native format) with no desktop conversion required. The included Software Essentials CD-ROM also contains eReader, Acrobat Reader, Solitaire, and Audible Player for palmOne handhelds (Windows only).

What's in the Box
This package contains the Tungsten T5 handheld, a built-in rechargeable battery, a carrying case, a USB HotSync cable, a power cable, a stylus, a CD-ROM with Palm Desktop 4.1 software for Windows and Mac (as well as bonus software), and a printed Getting Started guide.

Tech Talk: Flash Memory
Flash memory, a form of electronic memory, is used for easy and safe information storage. Its low power consumption and light weight make flash memory ideal for mobile devices. In addition, flash memory holds information without a charge or power, just like a memory card saves pictures when not connected to a digital camera. The flash memory in the Tungsten T5 handheld will maintain its data even when power is exhausted. Simply charge the handheld again and the data is there.

Tech Talk: Macintosh Users
While the Tungsten T5's new File Transfer application is a Windows-only feature, Mac users can simply mount the handheld as an external drive, and then proceed to drag and drop files from the Finder to the handheld. Note, however, that the Tungsten T5's Palm OS environment is unavailable when connected in this mode. ... Read more

  • Expansion slot that supports MMC, SD, and SDIO memory cards

1-0 out of 5 stars Utter Garbage
I recently went from an iPaq to the T5, recalling fondly how much more stable the OS was on my older Vx compared to Windows CE.How things have changed. The reset pin has turned out to be the most valuable accessory provided, and it gets a regular workout. No Wi-Fi?Really? Whose enlightened decision was that? This is a classic example of a product designed in a vaccuum, with little or no regard for the needs and expectations of the customers who keep palmOne in business.I live overseas and the tech support one gets from Singapore is, while courteous, wholly ineffective.I have been walked through unnecessary processes that border on comedy, and find myself running a mini-tutorial for them (on my dime) each time I call. The T5 is a paperweight. It will mean nothing to them, but palm has lost another customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Palm OS device I've ever owned
I've had the T5 for a month now and can honestly say it's the best Palm OS device I've ever owned. I've owned 2 color hi-res Clies before this. What I really like about the T5:

*Great color screen. The clarity and brightness is better than the ones on my Clies. I've yet to see a PDA with a better color screen than this. Go to a retail store and check it out for yourself in person. It's fantastic.

*Large internal drive. It's great to have the extra internal memory in addition to the ability to use an external card. It's live having two card slots. This way I can still keep a lot of apps on the handheld while swapping out the external card for movies or playing MP3s.

*Plays movies beautifully. There is a free player for Palm OS devices on the net called TCPMP. It does a great job of playing movies on my T5. I just love it. To convert regular DVD movies for my T5, I use Pocket DVD Studio.

*Non-volatile memory. I just hated losing all my data with my Clies whenever the battery drained or I had to do a hard reset. And this used to happed with regularity. With the T5's flash memory, data is retained on battery drains, though not on a hard reset. The good news is that in over a month of use, I've never had to do a single hard reset. Soft resets, yes. But not one single hard reset. So this is the most stable my data has ever been on a handheld.

I like the T5 much better than the clunky slider design of the T3 which annoys me. Some complain about the design and finish on the T5, but to me the design is sleek and stylish. And I can't see anything cheap or flimsy with the finish. It feels solid and well-made in my hands.

The T5 is not perfect. There is a slight hiss in the audio, which is otherwise of excellent quality (loud, clear etc.). The hiss is most noticeable when you wear the in-ear bud type headphones. So I simply use my external type compact headphones with my T5 and all is good. Still, this is something that PalmOne shouldn't have overlooked.

Another thing to be careful about is the new file system the T5 uses, which is a little more finicky than older Palm OS systems. Some apps simply won't work well with it. However, I put well over 50 apps on my T5, and only about 3 or 4 I had to remove because of incompatibility. If you get a T5, make sure you do a clean install of all your apps, one by one, testing each as you go along. That's the only way you can weed out the apps that won't play well the T5. This is what I did and while I may have to do a soft reset now and then, I never have the need for hard resets.

If you have the patience to do a clean install like this, you should end up with a T5 like mine -- a relatively stable device that handles MP3s, movies, and graphics beautifully,in addition to doing all the traditional things a Palm device should!

1-0 out of 5 stars new features negated by functionality
I agree with all of the other 1 and 2 star reviews, with the exception of battery life. The battery on the T5 is much better than previous builds.

The T5 is truly a promising machine with many new features and memory improvements.Beautiful screen, navigation, etc etc.

HOWEVER

Let the buyer beware.Any of those new features advertised for the T5 (and they're all there) are completely negated by the functionality of the PDA itself. For instance, I have always used my palm products as an alarm clock. It's anybody's guess if the T5 is going to wake you from one morning to the next. The alarm volume is fine, but that's only when it decides to go off.The "snooze" feature is as hit-or-miss.And this is not error on the part of the user.More...

- The clock, when it decides to go off, and other alerts such as meeting notifications will keep the T5 energized if you are not there to acknowledge the alerts, thus completely draining the battery.

- The data entry interface regularly misprints your stylus inputs, and is very slow to update once you've written a character.

- The T5 is not a sturdy device.Very cheap case and buttons, which sometimes need to be pressed twice.

- Many soft and hard resets, never for any apparent reason.

The list could go on to include the new plug device that doesn't interface with any other accessories, or the lack of voice recorder, wifi, etc.

The important thing for the buyer to note is that he/she is likely to spend $300 on a device that is going to frustrate to no end on usability alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!
Really Great! Microsoft did it. Feature rich software. It really works well than its Windoze counterpart. Price is a bit high, but once you start using it, you won't regret for that. A must have product for Mac fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job with some nice features
Like almost everyone on the planet, I've used Office for Windows extensively and initially I was a bit put off by Mac Office as it does look and feel different (what the hell is Entourage anyway?).

However on working with it more you get used to it, and it has some nice features that the Windows version doesn't.

3+
Entourage - I have really come to like the app- I use it as a replacement for Palm Desktop (Memos), Address Book (it is a little 'richer'), and Mail (it does hotmail as well as POP & IMAP), and everything integrates well.
Ability to mark a doc for followup - Office will give you a reminder, even when it's not running.
It's Office, right? It does almost everything.

3-
While docs are compatible with Windows versions, I have had problems with complex spreadsheets, so I do not think it is 100% perfect.
It is a little sluggish (800mhz G4 iMac, Panther, 512mb).
Entourage's calendar management isn't as good as iCal - can't publish/subscribe, or even import/export data.More generally, Entourage isn't very 'open' - it shares data well with other parts of the app, but not other apps.

Overall, it does what you expect and let's face it, it's the de facto standard for a reason.Expensive thought!

4-0 out of 5 stars HOW TO FIX UNEXPECTED CRASH BUG
Some very nice person posted this. So I feel it's my duty to spread the word.
You may get a "Word has unexpectedly quit your system has not been damaged" message. You'll see an angry review below about someone who was broken by this problem.

Do the following
1. Open your folder with your user name
2. Open your library folder
3. Open your microsoft folder
4. DELETE the following two files:

Word Font Substitutes
