    Editorial Review

Type, fix dinner, or just relax as you talk on the phone with the Plantronics CT10 900 MHz cordless headset. This 900 MHz cordless phone consists of a base unit and lightweight headset with a single-ear speaker. The headset's noise-canceling microphone picks up your voice clearly while filtering out background noise.

Range in most indoor environments is not a problem with the Plantronics CT10. This cordless phone, essentially a low-powered FM radio transmitter/receiver, uses high frequencies with short wavelengths so radio waves encounter less interference. A 900 MHz cordless phone like the Plantronics CT10 typically has a range of up to 150 feet indoors. The headset will beep three times if you wander out of range of the base.

Operate the headset using the handy remote dialing unit, which plugs into the headset via a jack. The remote unit is charged and stored in thephone's base, which also features a stand for storing the headset, clearing up desk space. Don't worry about losing track of the remote unit--a page button on the base sounds a beep that helps you locate it. This phone uses a single line and has analog operation.

Additional features include 10-number memory dialing that allows you to dial frequently used numbers with the touch of a button. Each phone number stored can be up to 16 digits. A mute button shuts off the microphone so that you can talk without a caller hearing you--a soft beep tells you when the mute is in use. Redial allows you to dial the last number you called with one touch of a button. The flash key supports call waiting and other features. The volume control lets you adjust the sound level of the headset.

The Plantronics CT10 is powered by a 9-volt DC rechargeable battery with six hours of talk time and 80 hours of standby. The remote signals you with a light when it's time to park it in the base for recharging. A cordless headset like the Plantronics CT10 is ideal for busy parents, homemakers, and home-office workers. Save time and sore muscles with this affordable and feature-packed headset.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good & Bad
As much as I like the phone, I have only small complaints. The Key pad is extremey small, hard to read & the keys are the same color as the battery pack unit, so they are very hard to see.Big fingers may press multiple keys at the same time. Also the belt clip to me is worthless unless I stand the whole time.As soon as I sit or bend at the waist-boom the phone is on the ground or on the chair.

Over all-I like it very much & use it often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best from Plantronics
I'm a huge Plantronics fan. Their products and customer service are first-rate. This phone, though, is sub-par.Mine, at least, discharges too quickly; loses its speed dial settings when it discharges; has poor, staticky sound; and doesn't charge reliably on its stand.I recommend paying a little more for the CT-12, which is very good.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Plantronics CT10
Plantronics usually makes quality products. This is not one of them. The case is sturdy and headset is ok.The battery is built into the belt clip which is mounted upside down for some who knows why reason? Then I tried it... audio came howling back into the earpiece like an echo, similar to the original cordless phones 20 years ago.Totally unacceptable!!Back it went and replaced with the new Plantronics CT12 and its GREAT!Totally different, regular type lithium battery and sounds and talks great!Well worth the little $ difference. ... Editorial Review

The Plantronics lightweight headset is designed to free your hands while you drive or work with a wireless phone. Though the unit's noise-canceling microphone makes it especially suitable for calls placed over a cell phone, it's also appropriate for use with traditional office phones.

Recipients of our phone calls reported no annoying disturbances or distortions during conversation, and audio quality on our end was clear as well, if a bit muffled. The headset works best on phones that feature good volume controls, because the microphone adjust switch raises and lowers the volume in a very narrow range.

The M175 also has the nifty feature of converting from a headband to an over-the-ear-style headset. Unfortunately, this also makes for a somewhat flimsy construction. Pieces immediately began falling off the unit as soon as we removed it from its packaging, though snapping the components back in place took little effort.

Overall, the Plantronics M175 headset is a versatile, quality headset for those looking for a hands-free way to work with their mobile or cordless phones. --John Frederick Moore

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little headset.
I've owned this unit for at least two years and have found it to work well on both my cell phone and office desk set. It is lightweight and reliable. The sound quality is excellent and I've never received a complaint from any my clients on the other end of the line.It attaches to your cell/cordless, desk set through a 2.5mm plug.It has 3 microphone volume settings and an adjustable volume control wheel on the headset wire, along w/a mute switch (very handy if you're talking to someone in the room at the same time!) It's quite the little gem.I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a inexpensive alternative to Jabra (which has an echo) and to other, more expensive, units.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this headset
I purchased this headset for use when on the cell phone. The sound quality and way it fits is excellent. The headband could be a bit sturdier but I am careful when expanding or shortening it so I think it is fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for home/office use
For the price, you can't beat this little headset. The mute switch sets it apart from other headsets, which is a must-have feature for conference calls.
It is also comfortable, and in my expererience, fairly durable.I've used this headset for 2 years with no complaints. In fact, I'm listening to a conference call on it right now. :-) ... Read more

Designing Web Usability : The Practice of Simplicity

    Editorial Review

Creating Web sites is easy. Creating sites that truly meet the needs and expectations of the wide range of online users is quite another story. In Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity, renowned Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen shares his insightful thoughts on the subject. Packed with annotated examples of actual Web sites, this book sets out many of the design precepts all Web developers should follow.

This guide segments discussions of Web usability into page, content, site, and intranet design. This breakdown skillfully isolates for the reader many subtly different challenges that are often mixed together in other discussions. For example, Nielsen addresses the requirements of viewing pages on varying monitor sizes separately from writing concise text for "scanability." Along the way, the author pulls no punches with his opinions, using phrases like "frames: just say no" to immediately make his feelings known. Fortunately, his advise is some of the best you'll find.

One of the unique aspects of this title is the use of actual statistics to buttress the author's opinions on various techniques and technologies. He includes survey results on sizes of screens, types of queries submitted to search portals, response times by connection type and more. This book is intended as the first of two volumes--focusing on the "what." The author promises a follow-up title that will show the "hows" and, based on this installation, we can't wait. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Cross-platform design, response time considerations, writing for the Web, multimedia implementation, navigation strategies, search boxes, corporate intranet design, accessibility for disabled users, international considerations, and future predictions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Right Usability Principles Endure
Nielsen points out in other studies that usability principles that hit the mark endure the test of time. This particular book is evidence of that, although a second edition targeted at updating examples and discussing recent trends in Web technology (e.g. syndication, the rise of portable devices, the proliferation of broadband Internet access) would be particularly helpful.

If you're short on time and resources, and can only read one book on Web design theories and principles (not coding), this is THE book.

Nielsen breaks Web usability into manageable chunks, starting at the page level, building to site-wide issues of navigation and search.

Sections on intranet design and international audiences are a good introduction, but Nielsen's other work (c.f. www.useit.com) do a much better job of illustrating important design considerations in these areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bible
You may not follow all of Jacob Neilson's guidelines, but you can't start any website construction or redesign project without reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This was one of the first usability books I bought. It was great, and I couldn't believe someone wrote all of these ideas down.It _is_ a good book.It is well written, and he does a good job of illustrating his examples.

However, for as much usability testing that Jakob must do, he provides little data to back it up.Perhaps hard data was not a requirement for web usability books written in 1999/2000, but it will have a more difficult time standing up to books written more recently. ... Read more
