by Daewoo
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $119.99

Editorial Review

The DVG-3000N benefits from recent leaps in DVD technology, making affordable once-exclusive features like compatibility with DTS and Dolby Digital surround outputs, and even MP3-CD playback. This unit also offers headphone jacks--the only model at this price to do so, and the only model we've heard of to offer two jacks, each with its own volume control. Perfect for late-night movie viewing when everyone else is asleep.

An S-video output accommodates newer televisions, while standard composite-video is also available. Besides DVDs and CDs, this deck can also play video CDs and Super Video CDs, lower-resolution video formats popular in Asia and, with the proliferation of VCD encoding software, taking hold in the U.S. as well. Using your computer, you can copy your home movies to VCD and watch them on the DVG-3000N. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer BEWARE!!! Do not purchase this ...
I am so glad that I did not purchase this ...They had a special on apartment rentals in Florida--if you sign for a year lease, you get a free DVD player.I'm glad that I didn't choose the rental just for the DVD player. The player stayed in the box for about 6 months. In 2002, I set it up; start purchasing DVDs to build up my library; then tried the player. It plays for about 20 minutes; then the picture freezes.Turning it off, starting over, moving it from one location to another, nothing works; the problem persists.Maybe the next day, it'll work; maybe it won't.Eventually, I'll finish viewing the movie; however, it basically takes 3 - 4 days to accomplish that small task. Why was this DVD player created; it serves NO purpose, whatsoever.Whenever, it freezes, when it finally decides to play, I'll forward it to the chapter that I left off. That's the way you have to view a movie.I would rather go back to VCR days than to purchase this ...Now, I am on my way out to purchase a real DVD player. ... Editorial Review

Enjoy cinema-quality video and sound at home with GE's GE1101P DVD player. The GE1101P features high-resolution video performance with multiple aspect ratios that can be switched between 4:3 and 16:9 (widescreen) at the touch of a button. And since it's both standard CD and MP3-CD compatible, you can use it to enjoy your favorite regular-format compact discs as well as MP3-encoded discs, CD-Rs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, and DVD-Video movies.

The audio features on the GE1101P include Dolby Digital and DTS Bit Stream Output (through both coaxial and optical jacks) for full 5.1-channel surround sound capability. Upping the ante for fun, the GE1101P offers a microphone input for karaoke capability--just put on a karaoke CD, plug in your microphone (not included), and enjoy the music mixed with your singing right from your home speakers. You can even add reverberation to help cover for unsavory vocal quality!

GE has also built in a host of convenient features to take full advantage of DVD technology. A screen saver kicks in when a disc is paused for any length of time (preventing a still image from burning into your TV screen), while parental control keeps young eyes from viewing discs of your choice, and picture zoom lets you magnify scenes or stills of particular interest. A jog-shuttle dial control provides automatic track selection for CDs, and a full complement of other operational controls are included on the front panel.

The connectivity options on the GE1101P DVD player include standard composite-video and high-quality S-video outputs (for use with compatible TVs and/or surround receivers).

GE's GE1101P DVD player comes with a remote control (three AAA batteries included). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dvd player I've ever used
Okay here's the deal, yes there are beter dvd players out there, no they are NOT worth the extra money as there is very little that is wrong with this one. 1st off this is a good dvd player, it will play your movies with no problems pauses or skips, 2 It plays vcd's and I've heard(and about to test)that it can play mpeg cd's. this should NOT be bought for the karaoake feature, get a karaoake machine for that, its great fun though, to play with the voices on the dvd(I found it hilarious on harry potter to turn harry's voice really low and then turn Hagrid's voice up really high). Now after about 2 or 3 years it quit reading disc, started saying "no disc" no matter what disc I put in. I unscrewed the top pannel took it off and found that it quit spinning the disc. All it takes is a lil nudge and it works, so you might haft to do a little dirty work but its worth it for the cheap dvd player is it not? It only took about 2 minutes to take the lid off and you should see what I'm talking about after doing that. However that might void any warranty but I have had it so long the warrinty is void anyways. I HIGHLY suggest getting this player, never found a dvd player as good as it before(regardless of price, but a portable version of this dvd player would be nice GE >_^)

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall great product, but misleading packaging
I've had this dvd player for a long time now (probably about 4 years or so) and it works great. It was cheap at the time i bought it considering all of the features. It still works like new even after 4 years of use, and I practically never turn it off because I'm way too lazy to go up to the thing to press power. It does have some bad things about it though.Like the fact the remote doesn't have a power button kind of pis*es me off.But oh well. Also, it lets customers believe that it's a karaoke machine, when really you can only plug in a mic and sing along, but not play cd+g.It really should say that somewhere in the box or the manual, but still, for the money, that's really all you can expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was this really only $100??
This product is great. Although it is a very cheaply made player, and actually built by a company called Shinco out of China (as are the majority of Apex DVD players), I could not have asked for something better in a DVD player.
Contrary to what everyone else has said, I have not EVER had ONE single problem with my 1101p, and I have had it for approximately 2 years. I am worried it will have a problem soon though, because since I am an electronics geek and all, I noticed one problem... there's no ventilation for the heat generated by internal parts! This however can simply be solved by drilling a few holes in the cover above the main processing unit, and if you wanna go all the way with cooling, then install a small heat sink and CPU fan.
Other than that I have very few qualms about it. EVERY single disc I've ever thrown into this thing that was burned correctly has played, without any problems. It plays everything from VCDs to SVCDs to MP3 discs to burned CDRs, as well of course industrial discs. And believe it or not, this even plays the dreaded DVD+R and DVD+RW discs without preference to certain dyes on the disc or anything. I have not tested DVD-R or DVD-RWs however. And it does not play DVD-RAMS, but pretty much nothing but Panasonic players do anyway. The video quality is exceptional out of the box, and now it's even better for me since I upgraded the firmware. It made a difference, and also loads discs faster. (If you're thinking about doing this, be sure to know what you're doing, otherwise you will literally not be able to use your DVD player again, and it's irreversible if you mess up. Stick with the original if you don't even know what to do, I'm just a geek). It also has DTS streaming output in addition to Dolby, which is very rare for a player in this price range, as well as a digital optical output, which is also rare for a low-end player. I have it hooked up through the oaxial out to my Sony HT receiver, and it plays 5.1 surround pretty well. It even has an adjustable DRC (Dynamic Range Compressor, a feature also known as Midnight Theater) built in. The player, really, all in all, is close to perfect.
However, nothing is perfect. I DO have a few issues with this: one is the remote control. This is because it is very poorly laid out and I still search for buttons after having it for 2 years. The power switch also works purely on voltage interruption rather than software standby, so you have to go to the unit to turn it off manually. Secondly, the MP3 file on-screen identification is close to a joke. It does not display more than the first 6 characters of a file name, when burned in the Joliet data disc format. Thirdly is another reference to the remote: the function of menu selection is not on the front panel of the player, so if you lose or break the remote, you lose menu control. My last qualm is the uselessness of both the karaoke interface and the built-in volume, mute, pitch, and echo controls. First off, this is a DVD player, if you want karaoke go buy a karaoke machine. If you really are into karaoke, you'd happen to figure out that you should burn karaoke CDs as VCDs or SVCDs, not CD-Gs, for this model. Secondly, why would you need a volume and mute control if they are so far from being refined? It does not have memory for any of the settings and does not effectively adjust the sound levels in equal increments. Useless feature. I hate useless features.
Oh, I also don't like how the mainboards inside were mounted with the screws going through the bottom of the case, thus the player sits up from the surface relatively high. The size is large too. But this is being picky. The unit is generally attractive.
ALl in all, this player rules. If you want a player that plays everything well, is easily upgradeable for you tech geeks like me, and all for a killer price, look no further than this player right here.

to the people who had problems, here's the solutions:
To the person who had the picture with the rolling black and white bars, that's probably because your TV works on one standard such as NTSC or PAL and the player's output is set to the opposite. To correct this, while a movie is playing, hit the "clear" button on the remote.
For the person who could not get their MP3s to play (29 out of 129 files on the cd)... a few things you might have run into: one is maybe just your burner did not burn the CD correctly. Second is because you exceeded the maximum directory depth/number of files in one directory. Third is because the bitrate may be incompatible with the player (I elieve this supports from 64 KBPS - 320 KBPS CBR, and some VBR files). Last, is because you authored the files in MPEG II encoding format where the samplerate is 48000 HZ - I believe this player will only play MP3 files authored at 44100 HZ (I tried to play a file once at 22000 HZ and it was garbled).
Last, to the people who have movies lock up on them: it's most likely not the player, it's likely the DVD, believe it or not, there are such things as "bad DVDs". Sometimes the layer transitions are not correctly set or it just plain wasn't recorded correctly... even though these things ARE rare.

Hope this review helps. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Player.... one year later
No, I don't mean to say that the player has been been great for a year.In fact, it's taken a year and three returns to get this player to play correctly.
1.When it arrived new it didn't recognize there was a DVD in it
2.After it came back from repair it recognized but wouldn't play a DVD
3.After it came back again it played the DVD but froze and/or the screen went blank.
4.After it came back again it seems to be playing beautifully.

Glad I had an old backup Toshiba in the meantime.

4-0 out of 5 stars out of stock
It is very upsetting to find out after a few days that your credit card will be refunded with the next billing cycle. I hope it isn't happening to lot of people and that's the company's( whynotpayless or similar) way of getting to money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice picture but very poor quality
I bought this for one reason only - my friend told me it could be made 'region free' without even having to mess with changing the firmware. This is true - there is a 'trick' you use on the remote control that turns off region locking.Very cool.I bought it and was immediately playing my DVDs from the UK (PAL/Region 2) on my standard US TV (NTSC).

But - this player locks up when playing Apollo 13 (at 44:02, precisely!).Search on the web for this player, and you'll see forums that list lots of movies that all fail.I downloaded patches and applied them but the problem remained. Other than the lockup, it has great image quality! The lockup is severe - must power down the unit!

This unit has very nice features for the price - dedicated r,g,b outputs, optical audio, coax audio, etc - but, the lockups on mainstream movies tell me it's just not worth it.

I was able to watch my UK DVDs but the quality was not good - I noticed poor display quality when there was movement in the image.Searching around, I discovered this is due to the PAL->NTSC conversion that the unit is doing. Not too bad, but noticeable.I also bought the APEX 1500, and it does a better job of this for some reason, although the overall image quality of that unit is not as good. ... RCA RC5240P DVD Player
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $189.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

RCA's RC5240P DVD player is excellent fuel for your digital media desires. It plays not only DVD-videos, but also audio CDs, CD-R/CD-RW, video CDs, and even MP3-encoded CDs so you can listen for many hours at a time.

Component- and S-video outputs offer clearer, sharper pictures (with compatible TVs) than standard composite-video, and even with a standard connection, you'll enjoy 720 pixels per horizontal line with your favorite DVDs--more than twice the definition of standard VHS.

Enjoy convenient dynamic-range compression (which quiets loud explosions and effectively increases the dialogue level) with Dolby Digital-encoded programs--that's the lion's share of all DVDs--and an optical digital-audio output will transmit true 5.1-channel surround sound to your Dolby Digital-decoding surround receiver.

Black-level adjustment lets you tailor the player's image to your viewing environment, deepening the blacks for higher contrast in nighttime or theaterlike environments.

Playback features include multiple repeat and programming functions, multi-language/subtitle capability, parental controls, and multi-angle viewing (with compatible discs). A DVD/TV remote control is included with this player.

RCA provides a 90-day labor and one-year parts warranty. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No Good
I had this DVD player for only about 3 months and it quit working, it kept saying LOAD. I called about how to fix it and they told me to buy a new one. I would not recommend this player!

1-0 out of 5 stars Let Down by RCA
I, like others, have had problems with this DVD player. It say's "No Disc" every time.I have had this DVD player for a couple months.Went through the online help with no luck.I contacted RCA, and was told it was a problem with the Player, and they would replace it with the same model. Great.Only at a cost to me of $39.95 plus S&H.That's an expensive DVD player.I already purchased this model once, and It's under warranty, then they want me to purchase it again.Duh.

4-0 out of 5 stars For this low a price, it's worth buying
I purchased this unit on November 24, 2001 and, despite what you may read in many other reviews, it's still working and I have only minor complaints. When I purchased it, the price was about 50% higher; now at such a lowered price, you can take a chance with this unit.If you get 18 months or more use out of it, you got your money's worth.I have not experienced the horror stories that some other buyers have reported in their reviews, but that can be attributed to random luck.

Almost always, I am able to play any of my DVD's and VCD's.Occasionally, a disk will not "register" and the player acts like there is no disk present.I have to unload and reload a few times to get it to work.

The most annoying fault is with the remote. At times, I would press a key and nothing happens. In a few instances, the action will take place many seconds later, sort of like it wants to think about it first before it will do my bidding.I think it's a programming error.

In my opinion, the remote has too many buttons and I have mistakenly halted the movie when I only wanted to skip ahead at 2x speed.

The video quality and audio quality are excellent.Setup and connection were troublefree. Unit is attractive in black although that makes the buttons and their labels difficult to read (I have the unit on a shelf at knee level).

This is not a bare-bones product. You get the normal composite video lines, and the S-video outputs, and the component outputs.I don't have the tv that uses the S-video or component outputs, so I can not comment on the quality of those features on this dvd player. You get fast forward and reverse motion in 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x.It also does slow forward at 1/2 and 1/4.

You can magnify the picture 2x and 4x - and then scroll around.

If you have the money available and don't mind spending more, I would not recommend this to you.If you want a unit that works most of the time and are willing to risk having to replace this dvd player within a year or two, I can say go ahead and give it a try. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Samsung DVD-M301 DVD player is an affordably priced model that features state-of-the-art component-video outputs, a slim design, and a dual-laser pickup. The dual-laser design, which employs separate laser diodes for DVD and CD playback, enhances video and audio quality and extends format compatibility to CD-Rs. In addition, this unit includes an MP3 decoder for playback of MP3 files recorded on CD-R discs.

The player's Spatializer N-2-2 sound circuit simulates surround sound through your TV or stereo speakers, while its 96 kHz/24-bit audio converters deliver pristine audio quality from DVDs and CDs. The back-panel Toslink optical terminal passes a 96 kHz/24-bit audio stream for use with the latest high-end audio recordings (though be aware that your receiver must be able to decode your 96 kHz recordings if you use a digital connection there).

The DVD-M301 includes left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic receivers and, in case you don't have a receiver yet, TV inputs. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel formats through its digital outputs for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver or an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

In the video realm, the M301's 10-bit video DAC ensures precision playback of high-resolution DVD signals. Analog video components are also selected to optimize performance. Composite-video output terminals provide the optimum connection between the DVD-M301 and an advanced direct-view or projection TV system. The unit also offers standard component- and S-video outputs and a universal joystick remote control. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars dvd-m301 is great!
I got this unit from e-bay and it was worth the effort I spent in trying to outbid other e-bay members. The video output is excellent (I hoooked it up to my 31" Philips HDTV) and the audio reproduction is really as advertised - it simulates surround sound as if It were connected to a surround system. It plays cds and cd-r without a hitch and sounds great on my Kenwood VR-6060.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the price, its great.
This is a bargan DVD player. for the price, you can't expect much more than you get. The remote could be less combersome without the joy stick and the disks could load faster, but hey. The mp3 playback was clearly put in as an after thought, it plays them, but there is no randomization option for your listening pleasure. What i really like about this dvd player is that it works and doesn't give me any problems, but most of all that it has played every dvd i've thrown at it including dvds from china. It also plays vcds with flying colors. If your looking for a good mid range dvd player, this is a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Great... so far...
We just purchased this unit at Costco for about $130.According to the Costco Electronics specialist, this Philips model was the least likely to be returned (other models there included Toshiba, Sony, and Pioneer -- the low-end Toshiba was apparently the most likely to be returned).

So far, playback has been good.We noticed a slight jump in one of the discs we played.CD and mp3 playback are both decent.

The features on the Philips compare favorable with models that are much more expensive. While our unit is only 3 weeks old, I'd recommend it as a decent entry level DVD player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked well for me.
This unit has been fine for me. I have yet to experience the issues described by other reviewers...perhaps I'm just lucky. The setup was easy. The menus simple and a cinch to set up, and playback has been superb. The price was great, bought it at BJ's. It's a step above the low-end DVD players at a low end price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent
The first time we played a CD in this DVD player, it refused to come out.We tried everything.I took it back to the store I purchased it at and they had no clue as to how to eject the CD.We finally took a screwdriver to the disk tray and popped the whole unit out. They replaced it with a new player.

We've had no problems with the new one, but the remote is full of buttons we never use, and with the problems we've had with this model, we realize we should have just waited a few months until the price on DVD players dropped (...)

Bottom line: don't bother with it for this price! ... Read more

Philips DVD712AT DVD Player
by Philips
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $189.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Philips' single-disc DVD712AT provides an affordable way to enjoy your DVD movies and CD music--both commercial CDs and homemade MP3 CDs--in quality and comfort. The player spins DVD-Video (both NTSC- and, for compatible TVs, PAL-formatted discs), DVD+RW, VCD, and recordable CD-R and CD-RW. Playback options include 5-disc resume, which lets you pick up where you left off on your five most recently viewed DVDs, enhanced parental control with disc lock, an enhanced graphical user interface, and picture zoom so you can magnify images from scenes of your choosing.

Video outputs consist of 1 each component-video, S-video, and composite-video, which together accommodate nearly every set out there. The component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions. (If your older TV has no colored RCA video input jacks, merely a threaded RF coaxial-type audio/video input, you'll need a video modulator/switcher, sold separately.)

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

This player also offers a dedicated monaural subwoofer output to channel the low-frequency effects signals--the ".1" in a 5.1 or 6.1 surround program--to a stand-alone active subwoofer. This means you can enjoy dynamic, full-bodied sound from your movies and music DVDs even if you don't have a full surround system. You just need an integrated (stereo) amplifier, left/right speakers, and a powered subwoofer.

If you don't have a surround receiver or multichannel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: TruSurround 3D simulates surround sound through 2 speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

1-0 out of 5 stars An expensive lemon
After almost a year of minimal use, the system would stop recognizing dvd movies in the middle. After checking with Philips about a replacement throught the warranty, I was going to have to pay almost $...for a refurbished one (not a new one) from the very company that produced this piece of junk.
I will never buy an item from Philips ever again.

1-0 out of 5 stars lemon
product wouldn't function .didn't recognize/play discs of any type.cd drawer gets stuck 1/2 way.owners manual somewhat too generalized.hookup instructions toooooooooo confusing for 1st time buyers of this type of player.very poor product.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far.... so Good
So far, this player has been great.Audio quality with CDs seems terrific.DVD picture quality is good (at least with the S-video connect).I noticed the player had a slight skip in one of the movies we played, but has otherwise worked fine.

The MP3 feature is nice, especially for a unit [of this price].The title of the MP3s are listed on the TV and the sound is great. However, playback of the MP3s seems to be limited in that the machine seems unable to randomly play the tracks.

Parental lock, time search, camera-angle select, and 4-power picture zoom are all included on this model, as are S-video, standard (RCA) composite video, and both optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs, and dual stereo analog outputs, offering a range of connection options.

3-0 out of 5 stars Navagation is horrible
First off, the picture quality is great.I have a 53 inch Sony HDTV and the picture is great. There are so many features in this baby you'd get sick trying to tweak it all.The only issue I have is the navagation features are horrible.Trying to fast forward or rewind 3 seconds if you missed something someone said takes 3 minutes to get where you need to go.The remote sucks big time.

Aiwa's XD-DV380 DVD player is an excellent audio and video component. Combining a 10-bit video digital-to-analog converter and 96 kHz, 24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter, the XD-DV380 conveys a sharp, colorful picture along with accurate sound reproduction. 1-0 out of 5 stars Does Final Call Auctions Hate America?
The XD-DV380 is probably a fine product, but I was never able to buy it from Final Call Auction, the lone seller offering a used XD-DV380 at this time. They disregarded my explicit instruction to ship my purchase via US Postal Service, and shipped UPS.

One problem: UPS can't complete delivery to my address, only the Post Office can -- I'm told that something like 2-1/2 million such adddresses exist. I complained to Final Call and was told (quite snottily) that they ship ONLY via UPS. When I asked why, I was told that "UPS is an American company."

True, UPS is an American company. But the Post Office is an American public institution. Vendors like Final Call undercut our public institutions and figuratively attack our nation when they adopt policies not to ship via the Post Office EVEN WHEN THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GET PRODUCT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.

What does Final Call Auctions have against America? Are they loyal to our country? If anyone reads this who works in homeland security, a DEEP investigation of these people is almost certainly in order.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great multi-purpose player
I just finished connecting my Aiwa DV-380 to my analog stereo system and 27" TV and, so far, I am delighted. The picture is a nice upgrade over VHS, and music CD's sound as good as on my conventional CD player. What I really like about this product, however, is the fact that it can play mp.3 files burned to CD's. One could program several tracks from a single mp.3 CD containing hundreds of tracks, eliminating the need for the multi-disc carousel. The on-screen menu works in a manner similar to Windows for opening and programming files and folders (here referred to as tracks and albums). The only complaint I have about this product is that you do need to use the television for the more complex programming options. I have other Aiwa products that have very elaborate LCD displays on the unit itself, and I think they could have gone a little further to reduce the need for the TV screen as a function display. However, this is a very minor drawback in light of the overall versatility of this player. If you enjoy downloading music from the web and burning to CD, the DV 380 will fill a few needs with one affordably priced unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Aiwa Product
This DVD player is an excellent buy. It plays CDs, also MP3s on a CD-R. The only downside, which is applicable to all DVD players, is that you have to plug it directly into a television because of the Macrovision anti-piracy technology. I had it plugged into both the VCR and the AV Reciever that I have at separate times, and they both gave funky picture output (which is weird because the AV receiver should work fine to pass the image). Excellent Aiwa product. I would buy it again if I had the chance/need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent player!!!
You can not go wrong with this very nice DVD player. It has everything you could want except for DVD-Audio, which is okay since the selection of them is so limited.By the time the selection is better, this DVD player will be old and in need of replacement anyway. This player has an excellent picture, good sound, and a nice menu and button layout. The remote is good. For the money, this player is a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 out of 5; Awesome 480p output, chroma bug
I didn't buy this DVD player to listen to MP3s or CDs, I bought it strictly to watch DVDs in 480p with Dolby Digital 5.1.For the price, this is an excellent progressive-scan DVD player. However, it does have the chroma bug, which most people won't even notice.

The unit has composite, S-Video, and Y/Cr/Cb component outputs. You need component video to display in progressive scan, as well as a TV that outputs in 480p, such as an HDTV.Truthfully, progressive scan makes very little difference on a standard 480i (interlaced) TV.

Audio outputs are composite, optical, and digital coax (bitstream). The latter two are required for Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS.

I am not overly concerned with features or the remote; if it works, I'm happy.Notably on the remote control, there is a button that allows the user to toggle between interlaced and progressive scan to check the difference. In some cases, interlaced looks better on older source material, since seeing interlaced source material doubled to progressive often shows you all the junk that was previously hidden.

The A/V quality is top-notch, with 54 Mhz video decoding and 192 Khz audio decoding. The player itself is relatively artifact-free.

Overall, this is an excellent player, especially considering I got it new ... on sale. However, for best-in-class single disc progressive scan, 54 Mhz/192 Khz, the Panasonic RP-82 appears to be the DVD player of choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sub-par progressive scan player...
You should realize initially that progressive scan dvd players will have a better picture, even if you don't own a HDTV.So the picture and audio quality were a nice improvement when I first got this player...and at a great price. However, it does not age well at all.I've had it a little over the year, and the freezes when it switches layers (many movies use 2 layers of the DVD disk) are becoming more pronouced. It is becoming more frequent that you cannot see the dot or highlight that lets you know what you are selecting (you can select, but it becomes a guessing game) until you power down, eject the disk, and start all over again. Finally, it is starting to completely freeze...and I mean completely (you can't even power down from the front buttons, you have to pull the cord at the back).Don't waste your money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
I did quite a bit of research in preparation for buying a progressive scan DVD player. I don't currently own a HDTV but plan on upgrading in the future. About eight months ago, I bought the Toshiba SD-2700 (not a prog. scan unit) that I now use with my bedroom TV and Love it, so I decided on the Toshiba SD4700 Progressive Scan machine. It malfunctioned when given certain commands and the picture was not as good as my 2700 which cost about $100 less. I returned it and bought the JVC XV-S60BK Progressive-Scan DVD Player, a second choice based reviews I've read and other research.

This machine works better than I ever expected and was $55 less expensive than the Toshiba 4700. It seems more solid, responds quicker to commands and the remote can be programmed to control any brand of television.... Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This baby's got the goods - for an incredibly low price!
I'd heard a great deal of buzz about JVC's new XV-S60BK DVD player - much of it revolving around the low ... list price and the anticipation that it would deliver artifact-free progressive-scan images. Buzz aside, the player looked unassuming enough when I removed it from its box. The sleek front panel has only the most essential control buttons, plus an indicator that lights when the player is set to its progressive-scan mode.

The back panel is equally streamlined but has all the usual outputs. The component-video jack is switched to progressive mode by pressing the Progressive Scan button on the remote and holding it for a few seconds. In a new and very welcome trend that saves you quite a few bucks, JVC packages a set of component-video cables with the player.

The JVC's remote control felt substantial, with large buttons I could easily locate by touch in the dark. The controls you'll use most often are on the lower half. Directly above them are buttons for less used functions like picture zoom and shrink, Digest (displays a grid of images from each chapter on a DVD), and picture-quality presets. The remote can also be configured to control your TV.

Pressing the On Screen button near the bottom of the remote during playback shrinks the movie to a quarter-screen window and fills the rest of the screen with a control panel. Several functions can be accessed from this panel, including repeat modes, time and chapter search, and selection of soundtrack and subtitle language or camera angle. It also includes bar graphs indicating elapsed time and the disc's data-transfer rate. When you're playing a CD, a similar onscreen control window is available to set up repeat modes or program track order - if you don't mind turning on the TV.

The JVC's 2x fast-scan mode delivered smooth, fluid playback. Another neat feature is aspect ratio control, activated by selecting the 16:9 Normal setting in the setup menu. This will prove useful if you have a widescreen HDTV that locks into a 16:9 or "full" display mode when it receives a progressive-scan signal (a number of them do). Set to its 16:9 Normal mode, the JVC player formats standard 4:3 images so they'll appear on widescreen displays with correct geometry instead of being stretched out to fill the screen.

Like the Marantz changer, the JVC effortlessly sailed through my progressive-scan torture tests. Scenes with fine horizontal lines combined with moving cam erawork all came through without any artifacts. Colors, too, looked solid, with no combing visible in either the bright reds of Yellow Submarine or the catcher's orange chest protector in For the Love of the Game.

When I switched to another reference DVD, the Hitchcock classic North by Northwest, I thought at first that the JVC came up somewhat shy on picture detail. Checking the sharpness control in the player's Normal preset, however, I noted that it was a notch below maximum. Bumping it back up let me clearly see both the texture in Cary Grant's impeccably cut gray suit and the details in the intricate furnishings of James Mason's library. Setting sharpness to maximum added slight ringing artifacts to the lines in the resolution pattern of Ovation Software's Avia test DVD, but I didn't notice any with movies.

The JVC XV-S60BK is an all-around excellent progressive-scan player that's also very reasonably priced. Having finally gotten my hands on it, I can attest that it more than justifies the buzz.

Order yours today!

4-0 out of 5 stars great player really happy
I had a Panasonic dvd-rp56. Being a huge Panasonic fan I was very pleased with it until I went to a buddies house and watched a movie on his XVS-65gd. I'm very impressed with the features, picture/sound quality, and value. I wish it had a backlit remote and could play VCD, but you can't have every thing. Being a feature nut I love the fact that I can change picture settings and the zoom feature is pretty cool sometimes also.
I do want to make a comment. Although the dvd player comes with component cables I noticed that they were no different than any regular composite video cable (the standard yellow, red, white cable) other than the different colors of plastic on the connectors. I went out and got some MONSTER CABLE video 2 component video cables. They made a big difference in the picture, and were well worth the extra money.
I highly recommend this player. With a properly set up monitor you will have a highend system at a moderate price. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Panasonic's DVD-RP56 DVD player uses 54 MHz 10-bit video digital-to-audio converters that process the video signal four times faster than the original 13.5 MHz rate. Combined with the DVD-RP56's progressive-scan output, the result is vivid, texturized image reproduction from your DVD discs. Additional video features include color, brightness, contrast and sharpness picture controls, as well as video black level control for dynamic color contrast. A component-video output is also included for optimal connection to compatible TVs.

High-speed, five-step smooth-motion scan lets you scan forward or reverse in five speeds, up to 100 times faster than the normal playback rate. Or use frame advance to move ahead just one frame at a time for a detailed look at the program. Enhanced video features include cinema mode, which improves the visibility of details in dark scenes and gives a more cinema-like luminance and color to the picture.

With twin-laser pickup, the Panasonic DVD-RP56 will also play your audio CD discs, including home-recorded CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 files. For an enhanced home-theater experience, use the digital-optical output to connect the DVD player to a Dolby Digital capable receiver. With DTS signals channeled through the digital output as well, the DVD-RP56 will playback both majoro formats of 5.1-channel audio for complete digital surround sound. Or if you have just two speakers, the V.S.S. mode will simulate five-channel surround sound. Enjoy other audio features like dialogue enhancer, which makes the dialogue more audible in certain scenes, and Bass Plus for an enhanced bass kick from your subwoofer.

Convenient features include disc stabilizer, which increases playability while reducing the chances of warping discs, chapter preview, onscreen menu icons, and a remote control with large cursor for simple menu navigation. A jog/shuttle dial is also provided on the front of the player, as are other controls for added access to DVD functions.

1-0 out of 5 stars DVD-RP56
Panasonic - what a junk!. Don't touch with a 30 ft pole unless you want to pay more to repair stupid "H02" error than the cost of Panasonic. Stay away from Panasonic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine at first,, but now having issues
I recieved this DVD player in 12/2001 for a Christmas Gift.Everything has been mostly great up until 2 months ago.It was spectacular at playing DVDs and I also loved the MP3 playback capability and standard CD playback. For some reason, the player is now unable to play MP3 discs or standard CDs.It will play one or two songs and then seemingly get "hung up" at random places on the discs.Inserting a DVD cleaning disc into the unit resulted in an "HO5" error message, and these "HO" errors seem to be quite common here. While it will still play DVDs fine, I'm wondering if they are next on the list of non-playable items.
This player lasted just shy of 3 years.I'm thinking of getting the Panasonic 5 CD/DVD changer unit with extended warranty.I think Panasonic relies on the guy or gal that plays CDs and DVDs only a few times a year, rather than someone like me who will play 5-10 a week, depending.Overall I'm happy, as the sound and picture are great, but would recommended getting extended service on these Panasonic items.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same experience: mine broke after 2 yrs
The picture quality is excellent for its price class, and I liked the way fast-slow foward/reverse works. However, after 2 yrs mine died.It would not eject the DVD. I would hear a rattling noise from the motor when I powered on the player, but the tray wouldn't budge. I couldn't pull the tray out, it froze in position.I had to open the player to retreive the DVD.

My next DVD player will be non-Panasonic. I used to be a huge fan of Panasonic, but not anymore. A DVD player should last at least 5 years. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD, not great for CDs
When our 5-disk CD player finally conked out, we replaced it with this slick DVD/CD player. As a DVD player it works just fine, but I doubt most people are looking to shuffle between 5 DVDs.Like us, most people are looking for it to do double duty as the home's primary CD player as well.If so, you might be disappointed. Two big problems:

(1) It is too slow in scanning CDs and responding to commands. If you just want to play a CD, you'll hate waiting around for it to be ready to accept your next instruction.

(2) The random shuffle mode is poorly designed. If you just hit the "random" button, it will play the tracks on one CD in random order and then stop.Huh?If you are able to get it into the random2 setting, it plays the tracks on the first CD randomly and then the tracks on the next CD randomly.Huh Huh?If you're like me, you want the random function to play the tracks on all CDs in the machine randomly. This DVD player can do that, but it's very hard to get the setting correctly because it involves hitting the random button three times. Now that doesn't sound difficult, but it has to register three hits. That means that you have to do it slow enough that the slow machine registers the hits, but fast enough that it doesn't think you're done -- all this without any indication from the machine of how many hits it has registered.Hint: if you turn your TV on in DVD mode, it will actually tell you which random setting you are on.That's convenient -- NOT.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 discs, plays VCDs, great price, but chokes on Black Hawk
Having great experiences with a Toshiba SD2700 DVD player, I thought the SD2715 would make a great secondary unit. Within a day, it became my primary DVD player, and the 2700 was off to the basement TV.

It has shown massive stuttering on "Black Hawk Down" - hoping it is a bad rental copy. Plays "The Matrix" with no problems - usually a litmus test for cheap decoders in cheap players. Hopefully an isolated event. I'll amend the review with an update.

Plays VCDs recorded on the cheapest media known to man. Allows for Disc Exchange while others are playing - a nice feature when you're looking for that rental DVD while watching another movie. Gives off a nice picture. Tip: turn on the 3D Audio function for pronounced rear channel effects off a 5.1 disc - sounds great.

Great player for the price. It does take 10 seconds to warm up, but it's a nice, reliable player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy !!!
Pros: plays dvd, dvd-r, cd, mp3, cdr, vcd; price, loaded with features; excellent dvd sound and picture quality.
Cons: a tad slow to response and motor makes slight noise while changing discs.
Bottom line: is in-expensive and a great buy for a 5 disc changer. Package contains fairly decent remote, a set of AAA batteries, a composite video and analog audio cable, good user-manual and a separate write-up mp3 playback and recording.

Recommended: highly.

Setup is easy and straight forward with the setup button on remote.

Styling: player comes in black finish, looks plain, has lots of button on front panel such as on/off, open/close, disc ex-change during play, disc skip, stop, pause, ff /reverse. Displays the disc numbers for inserted disc and blinks when it is playing.

Connections:
audio:
5.1 analog, digital coax, optical.
video:
composite, s-video and component video (rear panel contains switch to change between s-video and component).

since i did not have digital audio cable nor s-video cable at hand, I used video coax cable to connect digital coax audio to my pioneer vsx-d409 dolby digital/dts receiver and used composite connection for video to my sharp 32' tv. The sound and picture quality after adjusting setting (audio set to stream/pcm)sounded and looked great.

dvd contains 2x,4x,16x,100x speed for fast forward and reverse, slow motion can go from ½ to 1/16 speed, other features included are zoom, multi-language sub-titles, multi-camera angle view
vcd 2x, 4x.
mp3: displays directory with filenames of upto 12 characters only. this can be viewed only when you tv set is on. (mp3 limitation: should be recorded in iso-9660 format and recording should start from track 1 itself).

I was evaluating 2 other players during the same time namely pioneer dv-c503 and panasonic dvd-cv51, I chose this player over panasonic for price and other it does not have digital coax socket, pioneer does not play mp3 / no zoom feature.... ... Read more

Panasonic DVD-LA95 9" Portable DVD Player
by Panasonic
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $699.99

Editorial Review

Panasonic's DVD-LA95 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, and DVD-RAM playback--as well as standard and recordable CDs, including MP3-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a massive, 9-inch widescreen (16:9) LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 2.5 hours between charges).

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LA95 delivers the immersive six-channel surround sound of the DVD-Audio music format. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound, in both multichannel and stereo. Because the DVD-Audio signal is too high-resolution for the digital converters in current surround receivers (and also as an anti-piracy measure), the DVD-LA95 performs its own decoding of DVD-Audio signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate this feature.

Audio features include DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with 5.1-channel analog- and digital-audio outputs, built-in stereo speakers, and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing (which boosts the center-channel level by 6 dB during playback of Dolby Digital 5.1 discs, since most of the principal dialogue is channeled there). Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones. Other features include chapter preview, high-speed smooth-motion scan in forward and reverse (up to 100 times normal speed), repeat mode, title/chapter search with marker function, skip forward/reverse, auto power off, and resume play.

In addition to playing favorite DVD movie and music discs, the DVD-LA95 also plays video recorded on DVD-RAMs. DVD-RAM lets you record high-quality MPEG-2 video on DVDs, offering fast data transmission, speedy random access to chapters, and rewritability up to 100,000 times. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars broken player rats!
We have had this player for about 2 years and loved it until it broke. We bought the extra battery pack which gave us aproximately 5-6 hours total playing time.It went on a lot of long car rides and plane trips with us.My son at age 6 dropped the player and then we had playing problems.I had a very difficult time getting service information. Finally I sent it to an indepentdent dealer who told me nothing could be done as Panasonic no longer makes the spare part and even if it did it would cost about 400 dollars. The service tech said they only make so many spare parts and when they run out that is it.I think this is shameful for such an expensive product.Buyer beware this product can't be dropped and should not be handled with small children.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS DVD PLAYER IS GREAT!!!!!
I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY 12 YEAR OLD SON FOR CHRISTMAS OF 2003.HE HAS HAD IT FOR OVER A YEAR AND USES IT JUST ABOUT EVERY DAY.IT IS GREAT!!IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE BATTERY LASTED A LITTLE LONGER BUT, THAT IS OKAY, AS LONG AS YOU PURCHASE AN INVERTER FOR LONG TRIPS.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
When my Panasonic, no longer under warranty, needed a repair, I discovered that I had two options, either throw it away or buy a rebuilt player. The problem was a dead backlight, something that should have been a simple repair, but due to way machine is designed turns out not to be. I bought the rebuilt player and that was defective. It does come with a 90 day warranty, but local certified Panansonic dealer won't honor it. And onand on the story goes.

So beware, product was good, but once something happens and you enter the service system, you will experience frustrations. ... Read more
