Editorial Review

Epson's Stylus Photo 1280S is a large format, photo-quality printer perfect for a wide variety of professional and home uses. With a high 2,880 x 720 dpi resolution, six-color ink palette, and Epson's Micro Piezo inkjet technology, the 1280S produces exceptionally crisp and detailed prints. This printer also offers BorderFree printing--the image goes right to the edge of the paper.

Supported photo sizes include 4-by-6, 5-by-7, 8-by-10, letter, 11-by-14, and 13-by-19 inches. A wide variety of paper types are also supported, including photo papers, roll papers (with included roll paper holder), inkjet transparencies, self-adhesive sheets, greeting cards, banner paper, labels, and envelopes. Media sizes range from 3-by-5 cards up to large-format 13-by-44-inch posters. Epson claims that when stored under normal conditions, images are water and light resistant for up to 25 years.

Compatible with both Mac and PC platforms, the 1280S's software bundle comes with both Epson's Film Factory and Adobe's Photoshop Elements 2.0 to help users get the best possible prints. Epson also provides a one-year limited warranty.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
When this printer was introduced about 3 years ago it was clearly the best printer in its class. The prints looked nearly as good as lab prints, and the large format and built-in roll feeder gave options available nowhere else. But compared the best of today (Canon), the Epson 1280 comes up short in print quality and cost of operation.

Many people seem to complain about the multiple color ink cartridge, and blame that for the high ink consumption.I can say this is not true.Producing and marketing a three ink cartridge is no where near as costly as 3 times single-color cartridges. But Epson printers DO consume lots of expensive ink.

Besides the cost, I have two complaints: 1) prints invariably have a reddish hue (even though I am using Photoshop with native color profiles), and 2) the management of the roll feeder is clumsy invariably wasting expensive paper.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Macs
This cross-platform printer works fine with Windows. However, its Mac drivers are near useless. The prints are off center and the images fill 2/3 of a sheet. There are no layout options with the Mac drivers. I have written Epson 5 times - no response. I spent $15 for useless Epson Support. Mac users - look elsewhere!

1-0 out of 5 stars what a dissappointment!
I did not buy this printer to print photos, so that may be why I'm unhappy with it. I bought the printer expecting it to print out renderings, plans, and presentations for school.

My first problem is that it DOES NOT print borderless at 11 x 17. If you read the specs carefully you can determine this, but it isn't readily apparent. It prints borderless at every size except for 11 x 17, which is the standard presentation size in many design programs. Also, it takes almost an entire ink cartridge to get one good print - the ink is always smearing or leaving droplets of cyan or magenta on the page as it prints out.

I think this printer was a waste of money, and if I had to do it all over again I would spend more money on a better quality printer, because I know I would save the money in the end on ink.

In short this printer has been a source of frustration and a huge headache. ... Read more

Panasonic DVD-LS5 Portable DVD Player
by Panasonic
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $399.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Panasonic's DVD-LS5 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM playback, as well as standard and recordable audio CDs, including MP3- and WMA-encoded discs. Its slender, 1-inch chassis holds a 5-inch widescreen (16:9) liquid-crystal display and a built-in rechargeable battery good for about 2.5 hours between charges.

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LS5 delivers the super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound of DVD-Audio. DVD-Audio software titles offer classic music titles in both multichannel and stereo, though be aware that this model plays discs in stereo only. Most DVD-A discs have compressed Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 surround tracks, however; these can be passed through the unit's digital-audio output to a compatible surround receiver and speaker system.

Audio features also include DTS and Dolby Digital passthrough, built-in stereo speakers, and Panasonic's Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones.

Cinema Mode reduces the detrimental effects of screen glare from ambient light, rendering cinematic colors in pictures that are gentle on the eyes. Further, Cinema Mode improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting picture contrast.

This player is HighMAT compatible. High-Performance Media Access Technology is a standard co-developed by Panasonic and Microsoft to improve interoperability for digital media programming between PCs and electronics devices. HighMAT provides an efficient method for arranging digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful
I don't know how we would survive without this!Easy to use-easy to tote around-easy to charge. No skipping.Perfect size screen.Little hint: your Ipod headset fits into the headphone jack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing little device!
I can't rave enough about this player. It's amazingly small and light, with the best screen picture quality I have seen. Sure, you can get one of the cheap no-name brands for a little bit less, but do you really want to strain your eyes on a washed out picture? This is one you'll actually scoop up and carry with you when you travel. The quality also can't be beat. It's well worth the $399 retail price!

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible, terrible TV
Even at the low price, this TV managed to disappoint in all categories. The remote is a giant brick with all the important buttons hidden under a slider. The image quality was fuzzy and poor. The screen would glitch every once in a while for no apparent reason.Any white or bright area on the TV (even with the brightness turned down low) would cause a terrible BUZZING sound from inside the unit.Weighing in at 90 pounds, it was difficult to even rotate it a little by yourself.

Let me put it this way -- I had the TV for about 2 months before someone broke into my office and stole it.I was actually happy to see it go.

2-0 out of 5 stars Im not happy
Im sure the other guys were impressed with this unit .Im not.If you can manage to get the picture bright enough be prepared to hear a nice loud humming sound!!Ive used it with all connections tried.Even with the 17 pin connect to my comp it was dissapointing and the sound from any white background is disgraceful!Forget about burn in as well. Its going to happen..Youd better spend the extra money and not cheap out as I did..I kept Myself to spending under 10 thousand bucks to redo my room ,this is just for electronics.I use it for my bedroom cause of lack o space. My SONY bigscreen is best pic Ive seen so far.Ill save my cash and get a sony plasma next..Oh and the heat is insane,No one mantioned this so I doubt if they truly even bought one.I wish I wasnt first to get this TV no reviews were out back then...

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good For Under 3K!
O.K.----I think our man Steve from CA. might have been better served if he had read the owner's manual first, and then had professional installation. THIS IS NOT A HDTV!It will take the signal, but will have to "dumb it down" to display. But that display is absolutely gorgeous: sharp colors, wide viewing angle and NO artifacts.
As for using the display as a computer monitor, I would be hard pressed to recommend it any higher. As with all viewsonic monitors I have owned in the past, apps from word processing to the newest games are just perfect.I connected my cable to a media center computer I built, and now use a nifty program called Snapstream that puts the old TIVO to shame! Now my wife can tape her soaps, easily burn her favorites to DVD, check her E-Mail, surf the web, video chat with her mom, play Tetris (O.K.---she's a little behind the times in her gaming!), find that song she has been looking for, etc----all from the comfort of our bed. She's now happy as a clam, which any guy will tell you pays the ol' hubby dividends far greater than the sub 3K cost of the unit. And I must admit, I can't wait for Halflife II on a big monitor with the display settings jacked to the max!
Two caveats:Again, no HDTV.Perhaps more importantly, if you are going to set this unit up yourself, you ought be an enthusiast.Trying the many input choices enabled me to decide on the best option for myself, which proved to be the DVI for the computer, and the S-Video for all TV functionality except for DVD playback, which benefits with progressive scan connections (you know, that red blue yellow thingy). If you rely on the manual alone, you are apt to be left confused, as it is far too brief and poorly written.
If you feel, as I do, that the PC is the future engine to drive home entertainment, this unit is an excellent partner! ... Read more
