Editorial Review

Early Adopters Pick: January 2003. The first high-speed wireless networking router to use the 802.11g standard, which is four times faster than the current standard (802.11b) and backwards compatible.

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, andmultiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

To learn about the differences between the standards and select the right one for your network, click here for an easy-to-understand chart.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't
It sounds like some customers have had really good Linksys router experiences.I haven't.So I have come to conclude that sometimes these routers work great, sometimes they completely fail.I've spent hours dealing with Linksys' customer support and my ISP trying to get my router to work.My iBook AirPort and Windows 2000 /USB wireless adapter both found the router easily. But the router was not able to hook up with my ISP.Both computers get a good wired static IP connection to the internet.I tried using Linkksys' customer support by phone, email, web and chat and kept getting advice that did not work and www.linksys.com pages that didn't work.A software engineer, I'm reasonably tech-savvy so I usually have success with half-decent tech support. They never once suggested that their router might be malfunctioning. One of my ISP's support representatives said that he's had a run of some 40 calls from Linksys customers with this kind of problem.Apparently I got one of these duds.

I'd say Linksys has big problems with quality control and customer support. With many good alternatives out there I don't think it's worth rolling the dice with Linksys.I gave it two stars, rather than one, because it sounds like the good ones work really great and I imagine the duds a in the minority. For what it's worth, the guy from my ISP said he's had good experiences with NetGear routers.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY easy to install, VERY easy to use!!!
Hi, I'm very happy with this Linksys Router. It took me only 10 seconds to surf in the web. Believe it or not!!!. I just plug in the Ethernet cable from my DSL Modem into the Router conection. I turn on my Gateway Laptop and....surprise!!! I was already conected to the web!!!.
No configuration needed, no CD running, no nothing!!!
Great product, great Plug and Play from Windows XP.

4-0 out of 5 stars quite good, for a small home network
I've had this router for about a year now, and it does everything I need for a home network of < 5 computers. The only thing the out-of-box firmware doesn't have that I wanted is DHCP reservations. However, I got a better firmware from:
http://wifi-box.sf.net
which does this and adds a few other features. ... Read more

Early Adopters Pick: August 2003. The first PDA to include integrated GPS technology.

With the power of Palm OS 5 and the dependability of Garmin GPS technology, this super PDA redefines multitasking. Its integrated software not only allows you to look up appointments and contacts, it also locates and routes you to them with voice-guidance commands. Feature highlights include: GPS receiver, MP3 player, voice recorder, infrared communication, and vibrating alarm.

GPS
The differentiating feature of the iQue 3600 is its integrated GPS capabilities. Garmin's innovative Que technology delivers location awareness, electronic mapping, automatic route calculation, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and map data interface to the iQue 3600. Que technology enables users to see where they are, find a street address, know where the next turn is via visual and voice guidance, get back on track when they’ve strayed off course, and navigate efficiently to their desired destination.

Detailed Mapping
Users can choose a configurable basemap of North America, South America, Europe, or regions in the Pacific Rim, with generalized information on highways, major city streets, highway exit services, railways, rivers, lakes, and state, provincial, and national borders. The iQue also has the added benefit of detailed street information on the included MapSource® CD-ROM, giving users the capability of looking up restaurant addresses, hotels, local attractions, transportation hubs, emergency services, and much more. Once a desired point of interest is chosen, you have the capability to view more info or even show it on the map screen. The mapping capability of the iQue 3600 makes it a versatile companion for the international frequent flyer who travels, for instance, between New York and London or San Francisco and Hong Kong.

Customizable maps mean never getting lost again

Powerful Organization
The iQue 3600 is built around the Palm OS 5 platform and offers standard Palm applications, such as Address Book, Calculator, Date Book, Memo Pad, and To Do List. And there’s enough processing power to search large databases of stored information and to enhance display graphics with easy-to-read fonts and crisp electronic maps. There's also a voice recorder for making memos, quick notes, and messages. With 32 MB of built-in memory and an expansion slot, you can even store your favorite MP3s.

The flip-up GPS antenna
High-Tech Integration
One of the key benefits of technology integration on the iQue 3600 is its patent-pending contact-locator feature. Enabled by Garmin's Que technology, this feature connects the Palm Address Book and Date Book to the GPS electronic map to give the user the ability to navigate directly to a specific address within the user’s contact database.

System
The Garmin iQue 3600 features the new Motorola DragonBall MXL ARM9 microprocessor, and boasts 32 MB DRAM. This handheld is powered by Palm OS 5, which offers the processing power to take on the most demanding mobile computing tasks, together with advanced multimedia and the wireless connectivity and security that enterprises require.

Display
The iQue 3600 delivers brilliant images with its 2.16-by-3.24-inch display. It has a 16-bit color display with 320 x 480 pixel resolution.

Expansion
Expand your iQue 3600 via its Secure Digital slot.

Software
The iQue 3600 comes with the following Garmin Que applications: MP3, GPS Clock, Address Lookup, Electronic Mapping, Track Log, Trip Computer, Automatic Route Generation, and Turn-by-Turn Voice Guidance, as well as these Palm OS 5 applications: Address Book, Calculator, Date Book, Expense, Mail, Memo Pad, Palm Reader, and To Do List. In addition, it includes these third-party applications: Astraware Game Pack, Documents to Go, powerOne Personal Calculator, StarCaddy, SplashPhoto, and Vindigo.

2-0 out of 5 stars It is hard to deal with curstomer service
If you want to buy it, just hope it won't show "route calculation error".Here is the email I sent to them last year and I am still waiting for reply.

"Howdy!
I called two times hoping to find answers of "route calculation error".Unfortunately the problem still exists.
For the first time I used my new iQue 3600 during my trip to San Antonio, TX on August 6 to August 8, 2004.I was amazed at the functions the small one offered. It helped me a lot, especially in the downtown area.On my way back to home, the iQue stopped working and the "route calculation error" appeared on the screen.I had big trouble to find home back.
After I got home, I called tech support and after several attempts I was told to reload the map. After reloading the map, the route calculation error disappeared temporarily.
Today, August 24, I received my friend's new address and I couldn't route to her address and "route calculation error" appeared again.
Today's customer specialist, Doug, after several attempts, still suggested to reload the map.To me it is not an option anymore to solve the problem.I can not reload the map all the time, especially when I am away on road without my computer. If I knew that I would need to reload the map so often, I would not buy it in the first place.
Anyway you know your products better than me.I hope the problem can be solved quickly, otherwise I have to request the return of the product either to the store or to Garmin.
Thank you.
Feng Qin"

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Product, but does have some faults.
I bought this unit several months ago in anticipation of trip to Italy because of the detailed maps available through Garman. Well, the street detail was breathtaking! Venice is a very complex city with alleys & tiny streets that are bunched together in an impossible maze. As long a I got a clear signal (a drawback of any GPS unit)I knew EXACTLY where I was. Walking directions were right on.
But, back stateside I started seeing some limitations with the unit: 1) Driving directions were not that great, taking you on round about routes in spite of requesting the least # of turns and/or highways (not side streets), 2) the battery life is terribly short and needs to be put back onto the cradle for re-charging, 3) it's a rather fragile unit - I'm somewhat of a klutz from time to time and have dropped the unit which then needed to be reset.
The PDA part of this unit was a welcome bonus. I purchased a 1GB memory card which gave me the maps I needed plus plenty of extra memory. I loaded Pocket Quicken on it which enables me to keep track of my personal finances away from my desktop. Overall - worth the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product
Really nice product and worth every cent.I own a Garmin StreetPilot and have used a Palm PDA so I found this really easy to use.The ability to drag maps around to find places is amazing.

The integrated PDA functionality really adds value.A must for anyone in sales that travels (you could actually know where your taxi is going and where to find dinner in any city).

If you are just doing navigation for your car you could just go with a StreetPilot - a bit easier to use.My third great GPS from Garmin.

PS. Some of my kids first words in the car "turn right daddy" - copying my nav systems audio - Dad's car talks! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT BUY IPAQS!
Product is overpriced for its chintzy characteristics. Looks really nice, but as they say,"looks can be deceiving".I bet 90 percent of the iPaqs out there that have been purchased from 2003 through the present date are either completely useless or are in some need of repair and 99 percent of those broken are most likely not the fault of the purchaser.Hp/Compaq has a HUGE problem with screens (as you can read from the other hundreds of negative postings on Amazon alone).Mine was very well taken care of and lasted about as long as everyone else's has (5-6 months).I even purchased the extended warranty plan, in which you have no way of proving that you did not drop the unit. SOL! My suggestion: file a complaint with your local attorney general. That'll scare HP! (oh wait, they dont care because they are overseas in another country).

3-0 out of 5 stars Love the unit but super fragile.
When I started using the HP1945 it was the ultimate timesaver for me, especially the Outlook Contacts. I loved the design and the way it worked. After one week of use, the screen cracked just from being in my shirt pocket, and the unit was useless. I was lucky and able to return it as defective to the store I bought it from, and get a refund. I will be searching for a similar, but sturdier PDA.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good if no problems, terrible customer service
I bought my IPAQ 1945 in Feb of 2004 and after six months of great use the screen started flickering.I sent it in and was told that "You have spilled water on it and it will cost $190 to replace the screen."(a rude way to put it even if true). I knew it was not true but apparently had no recourse.Either pay up or do without. Now after going six month's without a PDA I'm getting ready to buy another and I just can't make myself get another HP. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I have had almost zero problems with this
This product has performed as expected for me and I have not had the software problems that some others obviously have experienced.I have also found the product easy to use and it works perfectly with my laptop.I had some issues with setup, but nothing that I could not solve myself with some general monkeying round.I have about 16GB of music loaded on mine and it works fine every time I use it.My only complaints are battery life seems a bit short and the manual is not very good. Also, I agree that the design is not as attractive as the ipod.Overall I'm very satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Software Problem
Generally Samsung MP3 players are very weak because of their poorly designed softwares. I bought YP-925GS and had to return it because of software issues and this unit uses the same software. I have been given Samsung MP3 players in the past for free and same issues with poor software.

1-0 out of 5 stars i've never owned a bigger piece of crap.
this product is god awful and has been nothing but trouble since I recieved it as a christmas gift last year. the first one I owned was defective fresh out of the package- none of the controls would respond (and yes, the hold button was off and yes, the battery was fully charged). i got best buy to exchange the player for a functional one and while adding tracks to it from my computer this brand new 2nd player froze up and ceased to work. after re-setting it, it became totally non-responsive; I'd turn it on, the blue lights would appear, but the screen would stay blank. I went through hell trying to get Samsung to repair it and once they finally agreeded to and sent my player back to me the same glitch occurred while transferring music to it via my cd player.

also, if you have a software problem you can't get Samsung to help you since the software is by Napster (and they don't communicate w/ Samsung). So if you have to call customer service prepare to be on the phone forever.

Please don't buy this product, it'd be better to just flush your $400.00 down the toilet. In a rush to cash in on the iPod market they released this player full of bugs. F**ck this thing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Until You Need Support
I had this device for a little bit over a year, and I like most people didn't opt for the extended warranty. In short, it died as soon as the warranty expired. It's the way hardware is and I'm fine with that, but Apple's support wanted to charge me $250 to have it repaired/replaced.That is almost the same amount as a new one, and certainly more than most of their competitors. When it worked, it was great; a device I truly enjoyed, but once it starts having issues, you better look for another device; Apple wont be of much help you.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so bad
not so bad, good amount of memory, fair battery, decent sound.overall a-okay.problems: battery (not replaceable) & loses charge overtime.Go here for a free 20Gb ipod:
http://www.tech4free.com/default.aspx?ref=117793

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor compatability for all the hype
While the iPod is great for the amount of music you can store on it, Apple has done a poor job with creating a product that lasts. The battery life is minimal (less than 4 hours and I've had it for less than a year), and it costs you $99 to send your product to Apple to have a new battery installed!I'm told you can change the battery for cheaper yourself, but it nullifies the warranty (and on such an expensive electronic, that is not too prudent). The program Apple supplies to be able to add music to your iPod (iTunes) is also full of poorly-chosen options. It comes with an auto-sync option, which at first sounds appealing, but later proves to be more trouble than it's worth.Having attempted to clear my library in the program, iTunes proceeded to delete all my music & recordings from my computer (many of which I cannot replace). If I were to try to sync my iPod to my computer at this point, the auto-sync feature would replace all my playlists with empty ones. After calling Apple, I found out that there is a 10-15 SECOND window in which I MAY be able to turn-off the auto-sync prior to losing all my iPod files. If, however, I am too slow, or my computer doesn't respond fast enough, I lose everything on the iPod as well.
After all that hassle, the good points of the iPod are it's portability (small size) and it's capacity to hold a lot of music/recordings.I hear there are also some calendar and address book features avaliable to Mac users, but not to PC users. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun game but creating teams is frustrating
Madden 2004 is the only Madden game i have had on the PS2. It is a good game with good music and entertaining gameplay but everytime i go to create a team, i will draft the players and complete all the requirments to create a team then i save and then go to exhibtion and my created team is not on the selection. I want to know if iam doing something wrong or i there a bug.

5-0 out of 5 stars Madden NFL 2004
The 2004 edition of Madden NFL Football includes several changes from the previous year. The new Playmaker Control allows players to quickly change, defensive coverage, and routes before and during the play. Owner mode offers a deeper set of responsibilities such as relocating your team, setting stadium prices (for food, parking, etc.), and stadium building. In-game visuals have been enhanced with broadcast quality effects to create a smooth transition between on-field play and the play-calling interface. Featuring the series' most realistic player models to date, matching tattoos and hairstyles with real-life NFL players.

Madden NFL 2004 isn't just the best football game of 2003, it's the best football game this generation of systems. It's the game that will satisfy even the most hardcore, while bringing back those gamers who, for whatever reasons, felt the last few versions of the series simply didn't live up to the legacy of the brand. The game introduces the two best new features found in football games since the Franchise mode, as Owner mode would be a fun game on its own, and Playmaker control is simply the most useful new gameplay tool introduced into the mix in many years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but disappointing

Perhaps because I purchased NCAA Football 2004 first, I was disappointed with this game. Maybe if I had bought it first, I would have liked it more. The first time I played it, I really wanted my $30.00 back. The second and third time, I at least tolerated it.
The game is like the NFL in a lot of ways. Unfortunately. It does, like someone else said, seem "sterile." I like the real college game more also. There seems to be too many bells and whistles with this game, instead of concentrating on the GAME itself. I turned off the soundtracks between plays because they were seriously grating on me. I also turned off the Madden-Michaels play-by-play. Though I wish I could still hear the stadium announcer.

I know the Colts defense was not that great in 2003, but the Steelers scored a TD every single possession against me.
Some of the screen passes seem like the QB is throwing the ball 150 MPH. It's also hard to run to the outside. Where is a good option play when you need one? (I know. It's pro football.)

In conclusion, if you could have only one game, pick up NCAA Football from EA Sports and skip this one.

BTW, where are the 1985 Bears?!

Editorial Review

Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others.

For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files. The company has concentrated its efforts on games. All the prelaunch titles we've seen play smoothly, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional bottlenecks that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down; hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based medium rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas (Pikmin, anyone?). While most other systems likewise have their games stored on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as to deter would-be software pirates.

Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers: Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can play Nintendo games only on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars.

The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games--it's even got a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming.

In short, the GameCube isn't an all-in-one entertainment system, and neither is it the most powerful of the modern video game consoles. But for video game enthusiasts who want to stick with their favorite characters, its value cannot be beat. --Porter B. Hall

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.
Any fan of the Nintendo 64 needs this console to add more depth and knowlegde to their already large collection of games. I highly recommended a Gamecube for any fan. And soon the Gamecube Revolution will be released making another ultimate console due out in the future.

1-0 out of 5 stars listen up, fanboys...
all you nintendo fanboys are cramping up the xbox reviews. thats our turf! :p but anyway, you say "oh, the crapbox (wow thats clever) is so bad, all the games are just rippoffs, and they're all for pc, and the controller is huge, and this and that and whatever" well, gamecube stinks even worse. i mean, what games do you have for it? animal crossing? pokemon staduim? please. what's that? there are 'mature' games for it? resident evil series, thats it. name ONE 1st party nintendo game that's rated M. you can't. conker doesnt count, he's from rare. or perfect dark, thats rare too. and rare went over to microsoft anyway when they saw how bad gamecube was doing. even the system itself looks like a Playschool product. who makes a purple console? and to the one who said 'xbox players are losers and loners with no friends', that's gamecube's territory. i'm not gonna call the guys over to play a heart-pounding game of butterfly catching on animal crossing. oh, and nintendo STILL HASN'T GONE ONLINE. xbox live is the greatest online gaming service around. and the xbox controller has gotten progressively smaller as time has gone by. and 3rd parties make controllers that are even smaller than gamecube's. so lets see, if i want Billy Hatcher's Giant Egg i'll get gamecube. if i want GTA AND Halo 2 AND just about every other game you could want, i'll get xbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fanboys, get some perspective.
Some of these reviews...Seriously.

Just because you like one console, doesn't mean you have to hate the others. Play what all consoles have to offer, you don't have to be a fanboy to one system...

Anyway, I bought my Gamecube on release, along with Smash Bros Melee. Now, I am a huge Nintendo fan, but I also own an Xbox so rest assured, I play games, not the consoles they come on. I don't care what game the console is on, it's the games that count.

Whilst the 'Cubes selection of games isn't as vast as the PS2s, the quality is a lot higher. Games like Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime, Smash Bros cannot be matched, and can only be bought for the Nintendo Gamecube. This is main reason to buy a 'Cube, Nintendo games. There are other fantastic games available only to the 'Cube too, like Tales of Symphonia, and Viewtiful Joe.

If you are a casual gamer, get a PS2. The 'Cube has a lot of games for the more pro gamer; don't be fooled by the "child" like graphics, Nintendo games are all about gameplay.
Still put off by the child like graphics? Check out Metroid Prime: Echoes and Resident Evil 4, exclusive to 'Cube.

Finaly, anyone concerned about graphic power of Gamecube, it is much prettier graphically then the PS2. Resident Evil 4 has the best graphics of any console game made, even surpasing games of Xbox, which is more powerful.

So, to sum up, the 'Cube is a powerful console, with a great selection of exclusive games and a controller that is confortable to hold. If you don't play games that often, you might be better with a PlayStation 2, but if you consider yourself a pro gamer, check out the Nintendo Gamecube.
You won't regret it =) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Dock is a hassle
Since purchasing this camera as a Christmas present for my family, the Dock has never worked right. The camera doesn't sit right in it and doesn't charge. The power cord from the Dock to the wall only works on certain outlets.I'd rate the camera better if I actually used it more than twice, but its rechargeable battery is always dead.I can't tell which features are good or not.I'm disappointed and spent almost $200 for the bundled items.

3-0 out of 5 stars Camera Seems Good, Dock Does Not Function Well
I received my camera today, apparently I got a used one, as the packages were taped shut. I made a 30 second video, worked fine, using the non-rechargeable batteries, then they discharged completely. I put in the Rechargeables and set it on the dock, the green light came on, within a few seconds, all the redlights came on. I checked all the possible issues listed in the manual and replaced the camera on the dock several times; with the SAME results.Camera seems to work fine when it has charged batteries, or while on the dock, but I cannot use it right now unless it is on the dock, as the rechargeables won't recharge and the other batteries are totally discharged. Seemed like a nice little camera and I thought it was a Kodak, but it does say MADE IN CHINA once you look it over GOOD. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to work something out with the seller on getting one of the NEW ones he advertised, or just return this USED one; and go with an Olympus maybe. Cannot comment on computer capatibility, software or prints as I didn't get that far. What a shame, things started out well for the first 15 min. or so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I bought this camera after returning an hp 3.2. This camera is so much more than I imagined. I am so happy with this camera. It takes better pics at 2.0 than the hp took at 3.2. The camera dock is wonderful and so easy to use. I love knowing that it is charging all the time and I dont have to wait til the rechargeables wear out before recharging them again. For the price, this is an awesome camera!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
I had a really bad experience with this jumpdrive. My original stick gave up on me in just 4 months. It just stopped working. The replacement died from a power surge within one week. Unfortunately, Lexar doesn't replace damaged jumpdrive so I have to by a new one. From my personal experience, I highly recommend against this flash drive. You may be more lucky, though.

2-0 out of 5 stars Crashed On Me
Had it for 4 months and it was working fine. Always safely removed it. but after 4 months it stopped being recognized as Lexar Jumpdrive and when i tried to access it it said Drive not formatted. When i formatted it, it stuck halfway and said. unable to format drive. Maybe i got a bad stick {it happens sometimes} but then i checked it out and alot of people had the same problem. Bought a Kingston DataTraveller and Sandisk Cruzer Mini, had them for over 8 months and they're working perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the greatest thing if you're a college student
i am currently attending a distance-learning program for my undergraduate degree and this jump drive is the handiest thing i have ever come across.i have to transport several semesters worth of work and instead of having to cart around several disks or CD's, i have 4 semesters worth of papers etc. on one jump drive! it's all in one place for me when i travel - especially handy since i no longer own a laptop computer. Also handy for when you DO have a laptop or something with mot quite enough memory on it, you can have one of these and save everything that you don't need on your hard drive to the jump drive. This product is much better than floppies or CD's.. more durable, too.

of course, now that i bought this one last year and now they have 1 GB ones for the same price... oh well, that's just the way it is :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Memorex DVD/VCR Combo
I was hesitant to buy this thing, considering it's not a SONY or other mainstream electronic device.Although a bargain at the "going out of bussiness sale" at Ames pushed me to make the dive into the unknown.

First off, it's obvious this product is for those of us who either can't part with our VHS collections or just must record television programs for whatever reason. The disk is definately the way of the future and once the DVD recorders get reasonable it's bye-bye clunky videocassetes.

I must say I'm happy with the unit I bought. This unit will play DVDs, MP3s, audio CDs, and VHS.I've played several DVD disks with no problems. The picture quality is great and the VHS has played flawlessly as well. There are many MANY ports in the back for just about anything you could want to hook up to it.A connection to an amplifier or other sound component is pretty straightforward and can be configured with a multitude of ways.It even has inputs in the front to give you access for ANOTHER component such as a gaming system.

The biggest drawback I found was that you cannot record DVDs onto the VHS deck.Although I'm sure all of the commercial DVDs are protected anyway. Also, it is bulky: about the size of an 80s era VCR.

All in all it's a spacesaver with a decent value for your money.I'll just have to see how long it lasts without problems. ... Read more

JBL SCS150 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $549.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Get the most from a DVD player and audio/video receiver with this full-range surround-sound speaker system from JBL. The four satellite speakers (left/right front and surround) and center-channel speaker fill a room with sound, while the 150-watt powered subwoofer rounds out the bottom end, delivering the floor-shaking bass supplied by a program's low-frequency-effects channel (the ".1" in a 5.1-channel presentation).

All speakers are video shielded to allow distortion-free placement on or around a television, and the satellite speakers may be mounted on stands, shelves, or the wall. JBL recommends powering the satellites with 10 to 100 watts per channel--that's enough to enjoy exciting home-theater sound (but those seeking bigger thrills will want larger amplifiers and heavier-duty speakers).

Each satellite (and the center channel) houses two 3-inch drivers and half-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeters, and the ported subwoofer uses a large, 10-inch woofer for bass reaching down to around 30 Hz.

What's in the Box
Four satellite speakers, one center-channel speaker with adjustable support leg, one subwoofer, four sets of wall-mounting brackets, user's manual, two 20-foot speaker cables (for connection from receiver to subwoofer), three 40-foot speaker cables (for connection from receiver to left and right rear satellites and center speaker), two 15-foot speaker cables (for connection from subwoofer to front speakers). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I was iniatially sceptical of the sound quality considerning the price, but after comparing with more expensive JAMO , KEF, ONKYO, YAMAHA speakers I was totally seduced by the quality of these speakers. This truly deserves all 5 stars. I am already awaiting for my 2nd set for the office!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I put this system in my living room which is about 300 square feet and these speakers are ridiculous. The brick mortar in my condo literally flakes off the surface from the bass. The surround is awesome and you have to be pretty into music to say that the highs are lacking.I listen to music with the system and have absolutely no complaints.I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sound!!
I wanted nice sound at an affordable price.I asked for a recommendation from a family member who designs and installs home theaters. They highly recommended JBL.I didn't think I could touch the price of a JBL speaker system. And when I saw the SCS150 system I was perhaps a little skeptical as to whether I was getting a bottom of the line system from JBL.I can tell you that they are absolutely fantastic! And what does that family member think who deals with home theater every day, you may wonder? They share the same view.Don't be afraid of this system, you'll be extremely happy if you want superb sound at an affordable price! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lost all memory!
My father and I both got this PDA for Christmas last year. After around a month, his lost everything. It was sent to be fixed, but after another month, it lost its memory again! By this time, mine also was losing its files. Both PDAs were sent to be fixed only to still delete memory. The repair man said not to let their batteries run out all the way, but by this time, the life of one charge would only last a day if I was lucky and that was if it hadn't been on. I would try to turn it on the next day and the screen would be blank. Today, I never use it anymore because it simply will not turn on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant PDA
Wish it had OS 5 so I could do MP3, but that asside, I have had my SJ22 for over a year and it's wonderful; not a missed beat!!From planning times and fuel for a flight to business, to downloading web stuff from free Avantgo.com, to playing Bridge and Chess, to keeping student records.I love this thing!!!!!!!Battery has great endurance.
My girl friend bought it for $100 after rebate...she thought it wasn't very good but all she could afford....wow, what a find!!!!
I had a Palm 120 and hated it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love my brain
My Clie is the first PDA I've owned, and I've had it for about 2 months now (I bought it on eBay for a nice, cheap price after using Amazon's rating system to decide which PDA I wanted). It was definitely a good purchase, especially if you're looking for basic PDA use. I keep track of everything in it, and have been much more productive as a result.

It is easy to use, and the screen is clear. Battery life seems to be pretty decent, especially when the backlight is not turned up too high. Even on low backlighting the screen is easy to see.

I have downloaded a few programs to it, as well as some books/Bibles. Once you figure out the downloading system, everything flows together pretty smoothly.

I bought a keyboard to go with it. That didn't turn out too well. Amazon matched the wrong keyboard to this Clie, so be careful when buying a keyboard. Make sure that the model you're buying (even if it says "for Sony Clie") actually matches the Clie you have. Amazon doesn't always match things correctly. But I'll be buying another one, which will be useful when I go to graduate school this fall.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this product. I've had to do a couple of hard resets, but I didn't lose anything at all. I don't know whether that's just "beginner's luck" or what. Anyway, this Clie has become my brain. I know where to be and when because of this thing, and I love my brain. ... Read more

Philips 15PF9925 15" LCD Flat-Panel TV
by Philips
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $799.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Delivering the ultimate in performance and slim design, the Philips 15PF9925 LCD television can be used in any room of the house. This flat TV offers a 15-inch high-resolution monitor with high brightness and high contrast. The integrated TV tuner, sound system, and Arch tabletop stand complete the picture.

Liquid crystal display televisions work by trapping a liquid crystal solution between two sheets of polarized glass. When an electric current is passed through the liquid crystals, they align so light cannot pass through. Each crystal then either blocks or allows light to pass through it based on the broadcast information. For clear, crisp color that rivals traditional CRT (cathode-ray tube) displays, a thin film transistor, known as a TFT is employed.

LCD allows screens to be thinner, and televisions lighter and more energy-efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but also fits in places conventional televisions cannot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Set
I selected this TV based on its compact dimensions for fix in a rennovated kitchen. It has not disappointed. The local cable has 17 HDTV channels and they are very crisp and clear on this set compared to the conventional CRT sets in the house. It was an easy set up - in fact there are so many options you could spend all day tinkering. I just went with a basic straightforward approach and was rewarded with a great picture.

Like most HDTV's these days the remote is loaded with buttons your will never use. I plan to get a simple one to turn it on and off and to adjust the volume. This set is perfect for a small space and has good visibility up to about 10 ft. After that the screen is small.

I can recommmend this as a great starter set for someone who wants to try the technology but not spend a great deal of money, or someone who wants a great set for a small space. ... Read more

Canon ZR70MC MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5" LCD, 22x Optical Zoom, Digital Still Mode, MMC Slot, Image Stabilization and Wide Angle Attachment
by Canon Video
Average Customer Review: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $799.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The advanced Canon ZR70MC MiniDV camcorder brings together all the features of the ZR65MC, from its ease of use to still photo mode and digital effects. It also adds a 22x optical zoom, 440x digital zoom, motion JPEG movie mode, Super Night mode, and an advanced accessory shoe for powering a microphone or video light.

Lens
The ZR70MC features a high-performance 1/6-inch 680,000-pixel CCD to capture high-quality video and digital photos. The zoom technology found in the ZR65MC lens is the same as Canon uses in its broadcast TV lenses. The ZR70MC is fitted with a high-performance 22x optical zoom lens, which can easily handle all your shooting needs--from wide-angle shots of all the family at the reunion to close-up sports action at full telephoto. The ZR70MC's 440x digital zoom significantly expands the telephoto magnification of the subject.

Image Stabilization
Canon's image-stabilization system corrects camera shake caused by, for example, an unsteady hand. This image-stabilization system makes for smoother and steadier video even with hand-held shots, at full telephoto, and with shots taken from a moving car.

Digital Stills and Motion JPEG
In addition to high-quality video, the ZR70MC also captures crisp XGA (1,024 x 768 pixels) digital still images. The ZR70MC stores these images via the built-in slot for Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard memory cards. You can also choose to store still images on the MiniDV tape. The camcorder records the photos for approximately 6 seconds, as well as recording the sound for your verbal notes or narration.

Designed to help you make Web videos, motion JPEG mode produces compressed AVI files that are smaller and easier to run and send by e-mail than conventional video files. They're also stored on the memory card and transferred via the USB connection. Record a 10-second clip at 320 x 240 or a 30-second clip at 160 x 120.

You can search through the recorded tape for your photos using the supplied remote control. This photo search feature allows you to search for images recorded in photo mode. Search forward or backward through the images one at a time, or jump 10 pictures backward or forward from the current position.

More Features

  • With Super Night mode, the assist lamp lights up to illuminate your subject

  • The full-function wireless remote control works at distances up to 16 feet
  • A wide selection of faders and special effects, including sepia, black and white, wave, mosaic, and more
  • For low-light situations, the VCR playback controls can be illuminated in any one of six colors: turquoise, blue, green, yellow, violet, and orange

Inputs and Outputs
The ZR70MC comes with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also referred to as FireWire), which provides a lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines, as well as USB connectivity for transferring still photos. Additionally, the ZR70MC features two types of analog audio and video inputs and outputs: composite and S-video. The analog audio inputs of the ZR70MC let you dub or insert editing from CDs, cassettes, microphones, or the soundtracks of other videocassettes.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the new, preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, and it is highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 540 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 2 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Power, Size, and Contents
The ZR70MC comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, which has an approximate battery life of 2 hours 20 minutes when using the LCD screen. The camera itself measures 4.1 by 2.3 by 5.8 inches and weighs 18 ounces. This package includes the ZR70MC camcorder, battery pack BP-512, power adapter CA-570, wireless controller WL-D79, shoulder strap, stereo video cable, wide attachment, USB cable, 8 MB Secure Digital memory card, and the DV Network Solutions and Digital Video Solutions CD-ROMs. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Canon Camcorder Class Action Litigation
Hi, my name is Steven Berk.I am an attorney in Washington, DC, who specializes in representing consumers who have purchased defective products from technology companies.I am currently working on cases of that kind against HP and JVC.I noticed your posting concerning ZR70.I have been investigating other complaints about Canon ZR, Optura, Elura, and GL series camcorders. In connection with that investigation, it would be very useful if I could interview you about your experience with the grainy CCD/mosaic noise problems. If you are interested, please email me at stevenb@cuneolaw.com or call me at 202-789-3960.Thanks for your consideration.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk
We bought this camera about 1 and 1/2 years ago when we were expecting our first child. Initially, we were pleased with it; however, we used it mostly indoors in moderate light. As our son has gotten older, we have needed to use it in varying conditions (low light, bright outdoors light, snow lit backgrounds) and have found it to be fairly worthless. In low light, it is very grainy and sometimes will not record an image at all. In very bright light, the picture is washed out almost completely. As a result, we have missed capturing some of our son's first moments on tape because of the poor, poor quality of the images. No first snowfall, no early morning birthday surprise, no first ride on a bike, etc. We have just had to send it in for repairs to the tune of nearly $200 dollars! We are extremely disappointed considering that we have only had the camera for a relatively short period of time, have used it sparingly until now, and have taken excellent care with it. Do not recommend this camera AT ALL!

Before buying this I did lot of research finally came down to canon zr70mcand sony dcr-hc30. (don't fall for other canon models like zr80-85. they lack features ) Both models are appealing for price. Sony has bigger lcd and better lowlight performance while Canon have better zoom (22x as compared to 10x of sony ) and lots and lots of features. Some people say canon is having better image stabilitySo it can afford 22x zoom w/o problem.
in zr70mc you can download video from TV/VRC or other camcorderwitout any additional accesories. So easily copy old analog tapes to this digital camcorder Or burn DVD's. Canon also provides wide angle lens (very useful ) Plus sony has only 3 months labor while canon gives 12 months labor warranty.

only tape loading in zr70 is little difficult if you use tripod.

Overall this is a good value. I tested indoor using 100w room light. Picture was little yellowish. But I got filter set from ebay for 17$ and all looks good now.
NOTE: protect lens and always use uv filters. ... Read more

The PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power. The console builds on its home entertainment value by doubling as a DVD player and accommodating most of the original PlayStation's vast library of games. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good system, not quite the best
But you can't blame Sony. A vast library of games could be found. Now they've got the new PS2. Slimmer and better than the original PS2. Speaking of original, many games began on a Playstation. Though it has longer load times compared to Xbox, it got a head-start on games. Something that makes it better than Xbox is DVD. Unlike the Xbox, you can play DVDs WITHOUT any extra equipment required. But Sony is like Nintendo and Microsoft, making their games, for their system(why not?). PSOne games can be played on it. Maybe... about 8 PSOne games aren't compatible with PS2. Sony hasn't given in though. It's still the most prefered console.

5-0 out of 5 stars PS2 overall
For christmas about 3 years ago i got an XBOX well that night when i was playing it something went wrong it told me the controller wasnt plug in when i knew it was so i had to returned it.After that i got a new XBOX and over the time frame i had itkept saying to sendit to microsoft but i never did. so about a year ago i bought a gamecube well that thing just sucked it had no gamesi hated it. so finally about 2 months ago i traded my XBOX,GAMECUBE and GAMEBOY SP in for a PS2.And let me tell you the PS2 is the real deal this thing has so many games has no problems . Every week i go out and buy a new game and the controller is so easy to use. so if you dont know what to buy im telling you i give PS2 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time to choose
My review is about which system you should pick- X-Box or PS2?
Well first of all x-box has way better graphics. but the thing that really matters is games. PS2 games to me are for five year olds. For example, Sly 2. What 11 year old kid wants to play as a raccoon? My point is that kids today are different. WE LIKE VIOLENCE!!!!!!!! So if your considering a PS2, you should think of the person who will be playing it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

You don't need to buy a luxury car or spend thousands installing a multipart system to get advanced GPS navigation capabilities in your automobile. Garmin's StreetPilot III delivers all the high-end features you need--from detailed street maps and sophisticated auto routing to voice prompts and a color screen--in a compact, inexpensive, and portable package.

The Garmin StreetPilot III sports a brilliant LCD display
Setting up the unit was surprisingly simple. First we installed the software from the MapSource City Navigator CD onto our PC and connected the card reader, with the 32 MB data card, to the USB port. Then we went online to unlock one of 10 detailed coverage areas included on the disk; for instance, Area 1 covers California and Nevada, Area 7 covers New England and New York. After that we downloaded detailed maps of our city (San Francisco) and surrounding areas to the data card. We also downloaded waypoints--locations like our home, office, and other places we often visit--onto the card and inserted it into the StreetPilot III. If you don't have a USB port, you can also use the included serial cable to connect the entire unit to your PC.

The physical installation went just as smoothly. We affixed the plastic base to the top of our dashboard with the included adhesive mounting disks, snapped the StreetPilot III into place, connected it to the cigarette lighter for power, and extended the small fold-down antenna. The dashboard mount's quick release makes it easy to store the StreetPilot III when not in use or, if you purchase a second mount, lets you use it in multiple vehicles.

We turned the unit on and in less than a minute it locked onto the GPS satellites and displayed a map of our current location on the clear, bright, easy-to-read color display. As we drove along, it displayed our position and direction on the map, the name and address number of the street we were on, and even the name of the upcoming cross street. The two zoom buttons let us get a very detailed street-level view or a broad overview of our current position, and the menu button allowed us to customize the display.

By using the ‘find’ key, points of interest such as attractions, restaurants, banks, intersections and many more are easily located and routed to. Simply choose the destination from the list and press ‘route to it’. The Streetpilot III will calculate the best route and talk you through to the destination.
The crisp, colorful LCD makes checking out your destination easy--even before you leave! This screen displays your possible destination of the St. Louis Zoo as well as local restaurants and emergency medical locations. It’s easy to become familiar with services provided even when you’re 244.1 miles away. Try that with a paper map!
The trip computer screen calculates all the travel data for your trip with incredible accuracy, while verbal instructions inform you of the next turn. Valuable information like distance to destination and time to destination are constantly updated--perhaps even putting an end to the question ‘are we there yet?’
Routes can be displayed several ways such as this turn by turn instruction screen, which highlights your next turn to make. The distance to go and time to go information gives driver’s the forewarning and confidence to watch for the approaching turn. The smooth verbal instructions will let you know when the next turn is approaching.
The fun really started, though, when we used the StreetPilot's routing capabilities. Using the arrow buttons, we input the intersection of a store we'd never visited, and within a minute it calculated the most direct route. The voice navigator told us where to go and when to turn, and it was simple to monitor our progress both on the map and on the text display. We knew the exact address of our next stop and entered it into the unit. The StreetPilot then guided us onto the freeway and successfully to our second destination, telling us exactly where to stop along the street and even on which side of the street the store was located. To get home, we just accessed a waypoint with our home address that we'd preprogrammed on the PC.

Even if you don't know exactly where you're going, the City Navigator maps include points of interest, such as restaurants, shops, and parks. For instance, the StreetPilot can find the closest fast-food restaurant and present you with a list of nearby options.

Testing in San Francisco, we did lose satellite lock a few times in extremely hilly areas or in areas with very tall buildings. We think this was due mainly to the fact that the unit's antenna is inside the car; an external antenna option is available for less than $100 that should solve the problem.

Once you use the StreetPilot III for a while, it's hard to imagine driving solo again. Whether you're planning a road trip or just need help getting around town, it's an extremely helpful companion that's cheaper and easier to install than anything else currently available. --Ken Feinstein

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but a bit confusing
My first GPS was a very old style that gave you longitude and latitude only.No roads. No water.Nothing.So the jump to the SP III was a big one.

Had to struggle a bit to download the info (updated from the website) onto the unit.Tough for this first timer to get the hang of it initially, though it gets easier with time.Working with the unit alone is a bit more complicated as naming waypoints and such can take a bit of doing using the toggle switches. But again, I'm still new at this and am looking forward to working with it a lot more in the near future.

My plan is to use it to have a constant knowledge of the location of gas stations between my home outside Philadelphia, and Sturgis SD for my motorcycle trip out there in August.I'm attempting to complete the 1,700+ mile ride in under two days and will need to stretch out my gas stops as much as I can. It's currently mounted on the dash of the bike for me to get used to it and play with its functions during my daily commute.

I agree with others regarding its unnecessary rerouting when I've never strayed off course.Strangely, it even gives different directions although I don't change the route I take on a daily basis.Rerouting calculation takes a bit, but I seem to remember that the calculation time can be adjusted through the menu.Unfortunately, it also continually gives me a slower route than the one I know is faster even though it's set for highway use and the fastest time.Perhaps I can adjust the pre-set surface street and highway speeds to get it to work more appropriately.Less than 5% of the time, the crossroad names are incorrect.

My other issue is the interference the unit seems to be getting from time to time from my satellite radio that's mounted on the handlebar less than a foot away from the dash-mounted GPS.

I thought this GPS would be able to take me right to where I wanted to be, using the most efficient route, ALL BY ITSELF.If I have to set up specific waypoints on a specific route in order to get it to follow what I know is the fastest way, the unit is of no value to me.The only good point is that I didn't pay over $500 for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin StreetPilot III: A driver's best friend.
I admit it. When driving, I used to get lost...all the time. That was before I bought Garmin's StreetPilot III Deluxe. With this amazing portable GPS (Global Positioning System), now I never get lost and you won't either. With its crystal clear voice prompts and colorful, easy-to-read, non-reflective display screen, it will deliver joyful, stress-free driving.

The StreetPilot III gives you clear, automated voice instructions, alerting you to necessary turns, distance to upcoming turns, and distance to final destination. In addition, the map page also displays your current direction, speed, and even counts down the seconds to your next turn. The GPS receiver continuously tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position every second. With downloaded maps from the included "MapSource" CD-ROM, you get comprehensive, street-level detail. There is no Internet access required and no service charges and monthly fees.

Just enter an address, intersection or point of interest using the rocker keypad, and the StreetPilot III automatically calculates a route and provides turn-by-turn directions to that location. If you accidentally, miss a turn, don't worry; the unit automatically recalculates the route to get you back on track. It also can store up to 500 locations of your choosing called, "waypoints".

The screen's map scale allows you to zoom in 900 feet or zoom out to 6,100 miles! The screen color actually changes at sunset from a daytime mode to a nighttime mode.

The one flaw with the unit is that you have to enter in a specific street number to an address in order to route it. It won't calculate the route without the street number. Fortunately, most addresses do have street numbers.

I recommend buying the Deluxe version because it includes the following:

* 128 mb datacard (instead of standard 32 mb datacard).

* Full "unlock" access to all maps contained on the CD, which is virtually of all of North America.

* Beanbag mount. This great accessory secures the StreetPilot onto a non-slip, portable, support base which allows you to securely place the unit on top of your dashboard without slipping or moving. The StreetPilot literally locks securely onto the "beanbag" mount. While locked in place, the StreetPilot can also tilt and rotate.

INSTALLATION:
First install the "MapSource" CD-ROM software into your computer. It's easy; just load the CD-ROM in the drive and sit back. When prompted, enter a custom code that has been included in the box. This code "unlocks" all areas of coverage within the United States and Canada. No additional unlocks are required.

Once you've downloaded the software into your computer, a map of North America appears in a window. You zoom way into the land areas you'll eventually want your StreetPilot to cover. Land areas are separated into quadrants of varying size. Each quadrant uses a specific amount of ram depending on the complexity of the roadways within it. As you tap on each quadrant, the program instantly lets you know exactly how much ram it consumes. At the same time, it instantly updates the total, letting you know how much of the 128 mb of total ram you've used.

The 128 mb of ram that's included in the Deluxe version, is enough to include all the roadways within numerous states. For example, I was able to save onto the StreetPilot, all of NYC, Long Island, Connecticut and most of Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and almost half of New York and New Jersey.

Once you've chosen your coverage, you now transfer this information from your computer to the 128mb data card included with your StreetPilot III deluxe. Simply connect the included "USB data card programmer" cable (like a smart card reader) to a USB port on your hard drive, push the tiny data card into the other end of the programmer and it transfers all the information from your computer to the data card. Remove the data card from the progammer and slip it right into the bottom of the StreetPilot. Your done!

"POINTS OF INTEREST":
In addition to addresses, the StreetPilot III also routes to specific "points of interest". Within each point of interest, are many categories. Within each category, you will find a multitude of establishments within close proximity of your location. The StreetPilot will even give you the distance from your present location to each establishment. Once chosen, it will route you to that specific establishment. The following is the complete list of the points of interest with their respective categories:

COST: I paid $740.00 plus $18.00 for shipping & insurance. (Mfg. Part No : 010-00232-10). At the time this is written, you can buy it from www.ecost.com for $739.99 plus shipping. It seems like a lot to pay, but compared to the cost of built-in GPS systems, it's significantly less expensive. Plus since it's portable, you can transfer it to any vehicle.

SUGGESTIONS:
I recommend NOT buying the eternal antenna unless you find that you absolutely need it. Initially, I read that sometimes the GPS unit may lose reception with the satellites, but so far, it hasn't. FYI: If you do find you need it, keep in mind that it conveniently magnetizes to to the top of your vehicle's roof.

Also, I bought (and then quickly returned) the Garmin carrying case. It's WAY too small. So small, in fact, that you almost have to stuff the unit into it. There's no room for the external speaker/12-volt cigarette lighter adapter.
