    Editorial Review

One of the nice things about Windows CE devices is that manufacturers don't have to stick to a specific design. They can make large screens or small screens, add keyboards or rely solely on the touch screen for input, and basically do whatever they want. Hewlett-Packard decided to make a do-anything device when they designed the Jornada 720, and on most counts they have succeeded.

The device sports a keyboard just large enough for comfortable touch typing anda large 640 x 240 screen that makes Web browsing and document editing mucheasier than is the case with a smaller device. This useful combination meansthat most people will be able to use the Jornada 720 as a notebook computerreplacement. However, if you're looking for the ultimate in portable handheldcomputing, you'll have to look elsewhere.

The 720 is about as loaded as a Windows CE device can get; it comes with anintegrated 56 Kbps V.90 modem, docking station for easy connection to a PC, ACadapter, and rechargeable battery. It's outfitted with 32 MB of RAM and a 206 MHz StrongARM processor that really makes applications fly. On themultimedia side you get an integrated speaker and stereo headphone jack foraudio playback, and one of the most beautiful TFT active matrix displays we'veseen. It can mix and match more than 65,000 colors at once, renders very crisptext, and never had trouble keeping up with our input like inferior passivematrix screens do.

The very thing that makes the Jornada 720 so useful--itsrelatively large size--is also its biggest drawback. Its weight can make itunwieldy, and there's no good way to get a grip on it when there isn't a flatsurface to use it with. We ended up accidentally pressing keys far too oftenwhen holding the unit with one hand, though with a little practice jugglingbecomes much easier.

If you are graduating to the Jornada from a smaller handheld (such as a Palm)instead of slimming down from a notebook, prepare to be underwhelmed by itsportability. Expect to be impressed, however, by its zippy performance, generousdisplay, and expansion possibilities. --T. Byrl Baker

    Pros:

    • Large, colorful display makes working with large documents practical
    • Keyboard is large enough for touch-typing, albeit at a slower rate than a full-sized keyboard allows
    • Comes standard with so many features that you likely won't have to buy upgrades for some time

    Cons:

    • It's heavy and too big for most pockets
    • Difficult to use without sitting it down on a flat surface

5-0 out of 5 stars It's perfect for me. Is it for you?
If you want a put-in-a-shirt-pocket PDA, this isn't for you. If you want or need a keyboarded device, this is the only choice without adding external keyboard. For me, that means it's the only choice. Contrary to the review, it is really difficult to touch type on it. It's got a large form factor, but I can carry it in a pocket (but I'm a size 56;)

You can find the Jornada external keyboard on eBay once in a while (part F1275A.) If you find one, snap it up! It works with an additional free driver from HP, and it adds six times the functionality.

The bad news: The product is discontinued. Additional NiMH batteries (proprietary design) aren't available on HP shopping. HP Parts told me they're backordered, but I did get mine in 24 hours.

The worse news: WinCE/Pocket PC devices are not supported by the software manufacturer after a new revision comes out. As another reviewer mentions, much "Windows CE 2.0" software will NOT run on Windows CE for Handheld PC (H/PC.) Don't expect much additional software to come out; companies just won't have a profit motive to support an obsolete platform.

The good news: There is a LOT of software out there now that works. You just need to find a good forum like Raul Lucky's web pages to help know what works and what doesn't.

The better news: With my Jornada 720 I can just take the unit along and have great functionality as a PDA. Between the add-on keyboard, Accurite 20 GB hard drive which slots into card slot 1, a 64 MB Compact Flash Card, Ansyr's Primer PDF reader, and other goodies which aren't necessary (1 extended batt, 1 reg batt, docking cradle, external charger, etc. - it seems like a lot but really isn't) I have no need of a laptop. I've even got most of my CD library burned to the external HD. I don't need an MP3 player, either. In short, this is much more than just a PDA with lots of flexibility and expansion capability.

The best news: With the flexibility of the system I've always got it with me, in the configuration for whatever I'm doing. It takes a little learning, but far less than the MessagePads did, and I suspect less than your average first-timer using a PDA. This is really more than a PDA, though it is less than a laptop. And with the lower price points, it's even sweeter. If I had the ready cash, there wouldn't be any of them for sale here, because I'd have them as backup units. :)

I'm expecting (batteries willing,) to be using it until Pocket PC 2010 comes out - at least. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, compact, light weight and full of features!
The HP Jornada 720 does everything I need to do for on-the-road computing. Checking and responding to e-mail, surfing the net, taking meeting notes, drafting memos and other documents, and accessing all those usual organizer functions. I now leave my heavy and bulky laptop brick at the office and take the 720 instead when traveling for business or pleasure. Lots of bundled software tools are included making the Jornada 720 a versatile machine. It's flexible allowing for expansion and scalability. I especially like adding PCMCIA Type II, compact flash and smart cards. The audio recorder and built-in speakers are also nice. The standard 32 MB of memory is an improvement over the older 600 series models. The improved Windows for HPC OS will be very familiar to Windows NT/95/98 users and the sync capability makes the 720 a logical extension of my desktop machine. Some minor drawbacks: it is somewhat pricey compared to the Jornada 548 and other Pocket PC handhelds; the keyboard (although nice) is a bit tiny. I use a two-finger or two-eraser heads poking technique to minimize keyboard errors. Great battery - 9 hours! I do love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jornada 720 the perfect PDA!
For more than 3 years, IÕve owned HPC Palmtop PCÕs. My first unit was a 360LX, which was black and white, ran on 2 AA alkalines, offered a 60mhz SH3 CPU (fast for the time) no built in modem or Ethernet ports, and only 8MB of Internal memory. Back when the 360LX was released many people did not use their palmtops to connect to the Internet, and most people did not store music on their computers, so 8MB of Internal RAM was perfect for data purposes. My next Palmtop was the J680, which was a HUGE jump from the 360LX. The J680 offered twice the RAM, a color screen, a built in modem and a CPU twice as fast.

Well a couple weeks ago I purchased a J720 which is also a HUGE leap from my former HPC PDA. The J720 features a 206MHZ ARM RISC CPU, a 51mhz Bus, a much improved CF/PCMCIA slot design, a far superior and less buggy OS, better battery life, a headphone jack, and a whopping 32MB of RAM! With the CF slot, users have the option of adding more memory by installing a CF card, which are cheap these days.

I am very impressed with my new HPC Palmtop. As a student, I need a device to accominidate by bulky battery hogger laptop; well the J720 does it for me! No Palm/PocketPC can fully replace my J720 device. Students need device for fast data entry, and adding an external keyboard to a Palm/PPC would be bulkier to carry around than a HPC.
I recommend HPCÕs to all those in education, wanting a device many times smaller and lighter than a laptop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB value
Great price on a great flash card. I needed ONE more flash card so I could stop juggling the flash cards I already have between devices every few days... (Kodak DC4800 camera, HP Handheld computer, DC50, etc.)

Especially when traveling, I take LOTS of pictures and adding this card to my electronics arsenal means I can snap longer before downloading onto my 6-gigabyte digital wallet storage device. Shooting highest-resolution pics is less trouble with this high-capacity card when compared to smaller-capacity ones since this card doesn't fill-up so quickly. And storing files (images, audio, documents, etc.) for my handheld computer is easier and more fun, too.

And this card is NOT SLOWER than others I have. My devices seem to read/write to this card at the same speed as my other CF cards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good value, good performance
I shoot digital pictures -- lots of them. 64MB CF cards just don't cut it anymore, especially with really high-quality TIFF or RAW images; being able to store only five TIFFs before changing cards is just irritating. [And, of course, it's very nice to be able to store over 1000 meduim-quality compressed images, too -- great for those vacation pictures or shots of your kid's school play!]

So, Viking's 128MB card is a pretty good performer, and I certainly can't complain about the price. It may not be the fastest CF card on the block, but I'm just not ready to shell out $... for a Lexar pro series card that'll store images faster. I'm happy to pay $... less, and wait a few seconds per image. And, of course, if you're using the card for MP3 or program storage (such as for a Pocket PC), you probably won't notice much difference anyway -- you write a file once, and retrieval speed is usually no problem.

I'm happy with my Viking card -- so happy I'm buying another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value for money!
I bought a 128 MB card a year ago and in December it got soaked in water at a Disney waterpark. I fished it out of the camera, saw it was completely soaked. So hoping for the best I dried it with the hotel hair dryer (on cool) as it had all my Disney vacation pics on it..and I could not bear to throw it away without checking. Wonder of wonders it still worked though my Canon A70 camera had no such luck, and I was able to download all my photos. I am still using it everyday since then in my new Canon camera as I am an avid photographer. I take about 30-40 pictures a day and delete them at the end of the day once I download them onto my computer. I am quite happy with it as even with a 4 MP camera on high resolution it gives me enough memory for about a 100 photos and since I download frequently to my laptop even when on vacation I have never needed more. All in all great value for money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More memory than I know what to do with.
I popped this into my Canon S100 and with the default resolution, got a reading of 1478 shots available! That's an incredible amt of space and for someone heading off on an extended trip, it should be quite a boon. I have been following CF costs on a dollar-per-meg basis for some time, and while the newest & largest cards have tended to carry a premium, this one does not. It is roughly fifty cents per meg, less than 1/4 of what it cost per meg only 18 months ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta look at this one.
Wow, does it again by offering twice the capacity of my 64MB Viking card without doubling the price of it.

    Moore's law, but faster.

This card works great in my iPAQ and camera. I remember thinking foolishly when I got my 64MB card that I'd never have enough stuff to fill it. Was I wrong....

This card is large enough to fit several mp3 (songs), full feature film, and some audible and e-books with ease...not to mention extra applications.

Plus, Viking offers toll-free tech support, something that not all vendors do.

A very important thing to note from the technical details: (Note: Check the maximum memory capacity of your portable device before ordering.)

Some devices, usually cameras, are limited in the amount of extra storage they can see. Don't buy more than you can use in your device. You may have to check the website or call the device vendor to clarify: some device documentation only mentions compatibility with smaller cards because these larger cards didn't exist then. My camera docs don't mention this size card, but it does work with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CF Memory Card Error can be avoided!
While I love the size of the card and really need that much memory for my Canon S40 (especially for my one week vacation and 250 photographs) I have to say that I lost 2 photographs... you might say that 2 out of 250 is pretty good, but if you take a photograph, frankly, you want to keep it.
When I took 16 photographs and downloaded I had no issues... but after taking 250 photographs the card started having CF Memory Errors in two places. Those errors meant that I could not download all my photographs in one go and had to download in batches. I was unable to rescue those two photographs and didn't feel like buying/using software to try and save them.
I have to admit that Viking's email tech support was very responsive and discussed formatting issues. The nice part about buying a known brand - they have a great return policy.

Right now the card is on probation - if it happens again, I'm returning it. I would probably buy another Viking card though.

Update: Since I have started formatting the card (via the camera menu option) after every trip and before I start a new batch of photographs, I haven't seen even one error. I have been on two very long trips and taken over 500 photographs. Have had mini-photo-sessions too. Formatting after I download them, seems to ensure that I have no issues with the card. Am still extremely happy with the amount of memory. Would recommend this card and brand to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing better than a half-gig hard drive for your Pocket PC
It's probably a little early in the CF card's lifespan to write this review, but I'll focus on potential uses rather than reliability.

I basically bought the card for my HP Jornada 567 Pocket PC 2002. It already had 64 megs of memory, but I wanted more. I also already had a 256 MB card for my Nikon Coolpix 775, so this one was more for the handheld than anything else.

My HP can playback MP3's directly off the CF card without modification, and with drag-and-drop functionality from my notebook's hard drive, which is nice. That way I can store around a hundred songs for music on the go, which I typically listen to in the car, using a cassette adapter through the HP's headphone jack.

I also enjoy watching movies on the go, and with the downloadable Windows Media Encoder, I can reformat almost any movie file into .WMA format, and bring it with me. The card could conceivably store three full-length feature films at 192 x 144 resolution without much problem.

It's also great for carrying large text documents with you wherever you go...like, say, your novel, technical manuals, the Bible, as well as a couple dozen songs, and still have room for a movie or two...amazing! I don't know how I got around without this baby.

Another plus is that you will *never* run out of space while taking photos on vacation with your digital camera, even at the highest settings, unless you do field work for National Geographic.

So far, this card has changed my definition for personal entertainment and functionality. Viking makes pretty good hardware, too. Just watch out for any rebates they offer (there was no offer on *this* card, but be careful).

Now I'm just waiting for the Gigabyte card...

2-0 out of 5 stars The first three months it worked great, then died!
I really wanted to give this unit a good review because I really liked having the 512 megs available.

I've owned this card for the last 5 months and have been going back and forth with Viking to get it replaced. They are very efficient at giving a replacement but I have recieved defective replacement units twice so far and have been without it's use for almost two months. I paid twice what it is today which doesn't bother me (technology speed).

The replacements have not accepted any data beyond 58 meg and then crashed, no matter which computer, which CF reader, My laptop or PDA, it doesn't work and now I am frustrated. All my 256 meg Sandisk, Mr Flash and Kingston work fine. If you want a reliable CF card I think you may want to look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware rebate
Getting them to honor the rebate was a battle.

After 8 weeks, they informed me by e-mail that it was rejected.

It took a phone call to the CEO's office (no kidding) and another 8 weeks to get the rebate check.

Otherwise, the card has worked ok, but is probably on the slow side. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars 64MB card - 155 pictures for a 1MP Kodak DC240 camera
Well, I had no idea how much room a 1 MP picture would take up on a CF card. I know it is a combination of compression and format, but I never really did the math.

GREAT PRICE: I bought this card, number one, because the price was great. Now the price is even greater when you get it for about 2MB for $1.

NUMBER OF PICTURES THAT CAN BE STORED:
    155 in a DC240 with 1MP.
    55 in a DX3900 with 3.1 MP.
I never knew the MP versus MB formula, this practical application helped me out. I understand however, much depends on your compression and format. This was all .jpg files and on Kodak cameras.

SEEMS COMPATIBLE FOR PDA AND PC:
I know one of the concerns on these cards is compatibility. Since I have had it, I have put it in an @migo Pocket PC, on the PCMCIA card on an IBM laptop and a Kodak DX3600 and a HP315. It worked great.

Nice card and a nice size, I'm set for awhile now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value and good performance
I've used Viking components in the past and never had any negative experiences with their products. When I got a digital camera, I shopped the local computer and mall stores for Compact Flash memory cards before turning to Amazon.com. I was pleasantly surprised to find an affordable Compact Flash card in the capacity I was looking for made by Viking. The card works great with my Kodak digital camera and Sandisk CF reader. A top notch product at an affordable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It!
The product works wonderfully for transfering data to my computer from my PDA or Digital Camera. It was very easy to install and has a screaming fast transfer rate!

Other reviewers have stated that the reader doesn't work with Windows 2000. I'd like to mention that a friend of mine bought one and he uses it with Windows 2000 daily. He has no problems with it. However, the Amazon site does not state anywhere that it is compatible with Windows 2000.

I also checked the Viking site and they do not guarantee compatibility (eventhough they are kind enough to include a driver for Windows 2000). Maybe the driver isn't perfect yet so Amazon and Viking are reluctant to state it is fully compatible with Windows 2000 still?

P.S. The reader doesn't work with my Diamond RIO MP3 player but it does work just fine with my Lyra. I guess Diamond does something to the card that makes it incompatible with any other device once it is used in the RIO. Strange, huh?

Anyway, I highly recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works very nicely with my iMac/Olympus camera
I use the USB reader to transfer photos from my Olympus D-400 Zoom digital camera to my iMac. Before buying my iMac, I had used the FlashPath floppy adapter to get photos to my Mac G3 desktop machine. This worked OK, but it was somewhat tedious to insert the flash card into the special floppy adapter, run a special application on my Mac to download the photos, quit the application, eject the floppy - and then start working with my photos. With this USB reader, things work much more intuitively - there's no special application to deal with anymore. The flash card simply appears as another icon on my iMac desktop, and I use the normal Finder operations to copy to/from it.

My only issue occurred in the initial setup. My iMac was not recognizing the flash card as a legitimate device and would just keep displaying the error message "Initialize or eject?". After a couple of emails and phone calls to customer support, I realized that I needed the "File Exchange" control panel enabled (it used to be called "PC Exchange", I believe). The FlashPath adapter specifically probibits the enabling of that control panel. After clearing that up, I've really enjoyed using this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good that it's been discontinued
This component didn't work on TWO different computers, a laptop running WinXP and a desktop using Windows 98. I had the correct drivers. When a device doesn't work with one computer, I normally blame the computer. When it doesn't work on TWO computers, I blame the product. I need a card reader but it is very unlikely I will buy anything from this manufacturer. I can't return the bloody thing so I am stuck with it (and out the money). ... Read more

It works fine under Windows ME, 2000, and XP, because you dont need drivers, I read a bad review for this item, and let me tell to the autor: or you have an old windows version(98 or 95) or you need to contact support, but not for this device, you need suport for the CF card developer, because this its just an adapter.

Its faster than usb readers(max 12mbps) and of course really more faster than cable connection from the device(1.2mbps), the speed limit its the speed of youre CF card(more than 12x its great).

CF readers with USB cords? Why bother? Say goodbye to those bothersome cords! This CF adapter is the answer to keeping your portable computer PORTABLE. One little adapter allows you to plug in your Compact Flash cards for quick and easy reading. I bought this item when I purchased my latest digital camera and it has been a blessing! It's so simple to use, light-weight, compact -- and incredibly inexpensive! How simple? Plug your CF card in one end, plug the adapter with card into the appropriate slot in your laptop and the computer is ready to read and write to the CF card just like it was another drive. How sweet is that?

I usually keeps it plugged in the laptop, and take a backup for my critical files on it. With a 512 MB card, it really takes a lot, and provides me with peace of mind with an online , reliable and fast backup.
With technology, the storage capacity doubles every 12 months , and the MB/$ drops by half every 9 month. Soon, you will be able to buy a 10 GB compact flash card for the price of 512 MB nowadays. And, still , you will use the same reader !! ... Read more
