Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom
    by Canon Cameras US

    Electronics
    list price: $399.99

    Editorial Review

With the Canon PowerShot S230, you've got the best of both worlds--the compact size and high style of the digital Elph series plus the higher resolution of a 3-megapixel camera. Updating the popular 2-megapixel PowerShot S200, the PowerShot S230 also features a 2x optical zoom, an improved 3.2x digital zoom, movie mode for videos up to 3 minutes, and more--all in a stylish, compact package.

    Optics and Resolution
S230's nine-point autofocus lets you sharpen the image on your subject, no matter where it is in the frame.
Featuring a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor, the PowerShot S230 delivers a wide range of detail and color (with images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels) and prints up to 11 by 14 inches. Canon's high-quality 2x optical zoom lens allows you to close in on the action, while the 3.2x digital zoom allows for a combined 6.4x zoom, letting you capture intimate details that might have been missed with another camera. The PowerShot S230 is also one of the few digital cameras to feature wide-area nine-point autofocus for taking crisp, sharp images no matter where the subject appears in the image frame.

    Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash memory cards, and a 16 MB card is included. When shooting images at the medium or fine setting, the 16 MB card will store approximately 26 images. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

    Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the S230 can also record movie clips of up to 3 minutes. You can choose from three different video formats: 160 x 120, 320 x 240, or 640 x 480 pixels. Both picture and sound quality have been improved, and an editing feature allows you to delete unwanted scenes during playback. The S230's photo-effect mode lets you do more with your still images. Choose from low sharpening, vivid color, sepia, neutral, and black and white.

    More Features
Though it's primarily designed as a point-and-shoot, the S230 includes several advanced features for photographers who want more creative control, including exposure compensation, low-light manual shutter speeds, manual ISO and white balance, and stitch assist, plus black-and-white, sepia, vivid, and neutral modes.

The PowerShot S230 uses highly advanced technology to make your digital photography experience simple. DIGIC enhances image definition and processing speed, while the sophisticated iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology assures faster and more accurate autofocus, autoexposure, and automatic white balance. The intelligent-orientation sensor ensures your pictures are always right side up, on the LCD or even while downloading.

    Horizontal

    Vertical
S230's Intelligent Orientation Sensor knows which of your images were shot horizontally and which were shot vertically.

    Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a proprietary Canon rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.4 by 2.2 by 1.1 inches and weighs 6.4 ounces. This package includes the PowerShot S230 digital camera, 16 MB CompactFlash card, lithium-ion battery (model NB-1LH) and battery charger (model CB-2LS), USB and A/V cables, wrist strap, and CD-ROM with imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Have it!
The PowerShot S230 Digital Elph camera is truely a usable camera. The instructions are clear and concise. The rechargeable battery and charger are a perfect companion for this camera. All pictures come out great! It makes taking pictures easy, fun, and compact. I recommend buying a case with too, because it is sooo small! pocket size!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest little camera!!!
What a work horse, plus the great size, just fits in my shirt pocket. Battery life is outstanding, but get a backup, plus this one uses compact flash so I was able to get the Sandisk II 512meg CF card also at Amazon for about $100. It's so good I bought a camera for everyone in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
I got this camera after looking around and comparing it with others.I'm glad I decided to go with the S230 for many reasons.

    Pro's
Small and can fit in your pocket, great quality pictures, excellent movie mode with sound, comes with battery and charger, not complicated to use, all around excellent camera, and again the 3.2MP makes the pictures very pleasing to the eye.

    Con's
Zoom isnt the best buts its alright, it takes good pictures when its dark out but you have to edit with a program such as photoshop to make it brighter. These cons should no way bother you much and should not deter you to buy this camera.

I suggest you buy a viking 256MB memory chip because the one that comes with it will leave you able to only take a few pics. With the 256MB chip you take long videos and take well over 1200 pictures. All in all excellent camera and as usual amazons shipped it fast and got the camera in a few days after making the order.I look forward to buy from amazon and cannon again. ... Sonicare's Advance 4700 (previously known as the PL-4) cleans with an ultrahigh-speed motion, leaving teeth feeling sparkling fresh. Extra-soft bristles let the user apply as much pressure as desired, making it perfect for people with sensitive teeth, braces, and implants. While proven to be as or more effective than manual brushing for removing plaque and preventing gingivitis, the Sonicare Advance is also guaranteed to remove 80% of tobacco, tea, and coffee stains in just 28 days. The 4700 features the Smartimer, which shuts the brush off automatically after two minutes, as well as the Quadpacer interval timer, which beeps every 30 seconds, allotting each quadrant of the mouth equal brushing time. The 4700 includes two standard brush heads, a charger base, a travel case, and a soft-grip handle that holds its charge for up to two weeks, making it ideal for travel. 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Elite series
I used the Original Sonicare for 5 years and got NO cavities or gum problems. The battery died so I thought I'd trade up to the new elite model. 6 months later I have a detached gum and a cavity. The Elite has excessive vibration that can damage the gums since the brush head design is different and smaller so the vibrationsdo not "pan out" evenly. Several sonic type models have this problem. And I was dismayed that that "clean" feeling from the first sonicare was not evident with the elite. I have heard the Oral B sonic is gentler than most. But I'm buying another 4700 type.

5-0 out of 5 stars No cracked plastic here - I love this brush!
First, I want to share what I know about why the plastic base/handle of a Sonicare may crack. The plastic collar that secures the brush head of my Sonicare Advance cracked during the first week I used my new brush. When I called Sonicare to ask for a replacement, I also got an explanation: If you use toothpaste with baking soda, the plastic will indeed crack sooner or later. The woman I spoke with at Sonicare said she didn't know exactly why this happens, but that the company was aware of the problem, and was looking into the cause and a possible solution. Anyway, they promptly sent me a new collar, and told me not to use any toothpaste with baking soda if I wanted to avoid another cracked brush. I've followed that advice, and my entire brush base is still perfect after 4 years of daily use...

Which brings me to this: I love this toothbrush! My teeth are clean, my gums are healthy, and I can drink the tea I love without developing a stained smile.

I highly recommend this brush, provided you can live without baking soda toothpaste.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guarantee
My husband, son (age 11) and I have been using the Sonicare 4700 for several years and we love it. We could NEVER go back to manual toothbrushes. The handle my husband and I share has "died" twice. Both times were within Sonicare's 2 year warranty period (period restarts if they replace an item). Each time they graciously replaced the handle. For those who decide they are unhappy with the product, they have 30 days to return it for a refund. Go to www.sonicare.com for details. My son has no fillings and our middle-age teeth and gums are in excelllent condition. An ounce of prevention... A bit expensive, but cheaper than high dentist bills. ... Read more

Sony DSCF717 5MP Digital Still Camera w/ 5x Optical Zoom
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $799.95
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

It takes two hands to hold Sony's new DSC-F717, which you'll need to use all the many features packed into this digital camera. The F717 captures images at up to 5.2-megapixel resolution--2,560 by 1,920 pixels--which allows for prints of 11 by 14 inches or even greater.

Images are crisp, colorful, and deep with detail. With USB 2.0 support, transfers to the PC zipped by and can be set to dispatch automatically. The large, autofocus Carl Zeiss lens zooms optically at 5x, with another 2x in digital mode. Atop the lens, the automatic flash pops open when needed. It also performs preflash metering and corrects the amount of light sent to create shots with the best possible exposure.

This aids the NightFraming mode, which incorporates the camera's NightShot infrared technology, and can help with taking optimal shots in low-light or no-light situations. If you've never used an infrared viewer before, you'll be impressed by the additional photo opportunities it provides, like snapping shots of teenagers stealing your jack-o'-lanterns and catching them orange-handed.

NightShot can also be used with the camera's movie-capturing mode. The audiovisual movies can be played back full screen with the HQX mode; we played our movie at 1,280 x 1,024 and could only find minor pixilation around the edges.

Video size is limited only by the capacity of the Sony Memory Stick inside the camera. The F717 ships with a 32 MB stick, so an upgrade to a larger size is recommended. It comes with a shoulder strap, but we also recommend buying a case to protect your investment. Not a camera for beginners, the F717 does everything you'd expect from a high-end digital camera. --J. Curtis

    Pros:

    • 5-megapixel resolution with 5x optical zoom
    • NightShot infrared mode is quite handy
    • Multiple modes, including movies with audio

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
Awesome camera, takes excellent pictures and it looks stunningly beautiful and appealing, wherever i go people inquire about it.....and the pictures that i take with it never disappoints. I read about many people talking about it strange barrel lens that makes holding it difficult but i believe it is very well designed and it fits in comfortably in my hands.....battery life is just awesome, it just keeps on going and going.....response time(after u click) is bit slower but much better than many other digital camera which i have seen, unless u think that u will be very often in a position where u really need to take real quick pics, this camera should do the job for u.....if one have to write about this camera's great features it will easily extend to many pages....gist of all is this a beautiful camera which takes stunningly beautiful shots-no matter what the conditions are and erybdy in my famly loves it....GREAT CAMERA!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Camera
Not as good as their 8 megapixel camera, but still good value for an amateur. For most people, the difference between the two resolutions won't be noticed. The camera has many of the features of it's high-priced brother, and still has the same flexibility of letting you decide how much control to exercise over exposure and focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
I LOVE this camera! It is quite easy to use right out of the box; but your pictures just get better and better as you read the manual and learn to do all that this camera is capable of!I get great pictures up to 11x14 and beyond.People are always stunned by how crystal clear my portraits are and how wonderful the colors come through.

My one caution is be careful with the zoom.If you do not turn off the digital zoom, you can use it without realizing you are using it and your pictures can be somewhat grainy. When I turn the digital zoom off, I get amazingly clear pictures every time.I bought this camera with a package of lenses and other accessories for $1,500 so I would definitely recommend it at this new LOWER price! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great little printer
I have had this printer for about a year now, and
find it to be a very good buy and a durable little
    printer.
It is especially nice that it does both pcl and postscript.
There probably is a newer version of this now, but I
haven't really keep up with these lately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great printer, might want to look at Optra E210
My department placed about 15 of these and the earlier E310 model on user's desks over the past 9 months or so.We've been very happy with them thus far.Our goal was to displace as many inkjets in the department as possible (inkjets cost a small fortune on a per page basis) and the E312 has been excellent in this role.

Since this printer's "little brother", the E210 came out, we have standardized on it.It is a bit cheaper and is actually rated slightly faster at 12ppm.The E210 also seems a bit smaller if desktop space is a concern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lexmark gets it right.
When my old Brother laser printer died, I replaced it with a $99 Epson color inkjet. It's a cute little printer but its paper feeder is not very well designed and it drinks ink like there's no tomorrow. For $99 I got a printer that has cost me about $50 every two months in new ink cartridges. It was definitely time for a new workhorse printer, and after considerable research I settled on the Lexmark Optra E312.Its little brother, the E312L, is about $120 cheaper but lacks PostScript, and the other printers in the Optra E312 price range, such as the HP 1100, seem to be designed only for MS Windows.Since I run both Windows and Linux in my home office I needed something that was a little more flexible.

When I opened the box and lifted out the printer, I thought something was wrong; it was too light!Maybe they left the mechanism out?But no, nothing was wrong. After removing the shipping tape, I took the ink cartridge with its simple install diagrams printed right on top, pulled out the toner seal and inserted it into the printer.I plugged the E312 in and inserted the USB cable and hit the operator button to get a test page, which came out beautifully. This whole process took maybe five minutes.

Since Linux was running, I ran the Gnome print queue tool, which is an easy Windows-like dialogue box, and added the Lexmark as a postscript printer.I then printed a test page from the dialogue box and a web page from Opera browser. Both worked perfectly. The Linux setup was all of five minutes.

I next rebooted to Windows ME, inserted the CD-ROM, and let it rip. This process was a bit slower than Linux and included an automatic download of the latest drivers from the Lexmark web site. After persuading Windows to stop trying to reinstall the printer every time I rebooted, I finally had everything working in both operating systems.

What else can I say about this printer? It is fast and quiet and handles everything I've thrown at it with equal competence: web pages, Finale music scores, Microsoft Word documents. Its toner cartridge is rated for thousands of pages, its Postscript and PCL compatibility allow it to handle any kind of graphics and text, and its user interface is simple. This is what a small office printer should be like. The molded icons on the sheet feeders remind the user which way the paper should face, it's got two separate feeders with variable width adjustable trays for envelopes and other items, and an extra straight paper path for heavier paper.

My only complaint so far is the paltry 4M of memory that comes by default; heavy graphics jobs will require more memory, and Lexmark charges top dollar for memory upgrades, but one can add up to 64M if needed.A 16M upgrade costs $150 from Lexmark, but I've heard on the internet that you should be able to use a standard 72-pin SIMM which would be maybe one third or one fourth the price.

All in all this is a fine example of how to do things right: a well engineered, well documented machine that is almost effortless to set up and use.Lexmark got it right with this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Great Deal.
Between the battery that the camera comes with and this extra one, I never run out of power. The bag has storage places for extra batteries, tapes and memory sticks. With the size of my Sony trv-350 camcorder I'm even able to fit my Nikon digital camera in the same bag!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great case
This is the carrying case we have for our Sony camera.I must say, although it is a little bulky, it fits our big camera perfectly, and has a lot of room for extras like batteries, memory sticks, software, etc.It is also well-padded, and it does a great job of protecting the camera while it is inside.

The strap seems to be fairly heavy duty, built to last for a long time. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Case
It is a good case, with side flaps to keep out rain and sand, unlike some of the cheaper aftermarket cases.Included is a ID tag holder on the inside, which I never see on the aftermarket cases.

When I need another battery, I'll probably get this kit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, reliable system
Although several other reviewers have complained about static or poor voice quality, this phone system has been great for us. Never a problem, easy to set up and use, clear voice quality and very reliable.Uniden has been my brand of choice for years. The only reason for giving this phone 4 instead of 5 stars-- the fact that you can't use the two handsets at the same time. The other day I was on the phone and I started getting a low battery warning beep from the handset I was using. I went to switch over to the other one, and discovered I couldn't. I had to hang up and call the person back from the other handset. Not exactly convenient, but not a dealbreaker for me either.

1-0 out of 5 stars dead in 14 months
One of the handsets lost its ability to transmit, just after the warranty expired.

    But wait, there's more:

These two handsets do NOT share phonebook information -- if you plan to store telephone numbers for easy dialing, you'll have to enter them twice. There's no way to beam phonebooks from one to the other, like some Siemens phones do.

We tried one third-party headset, and it did not work well. We bought the Uniden HS910 Headset (an additional $20) and it is only barely adequate; both its speaker and microphone produce substandard sound.

All in all we've been underwhelmed with this unit, and we're looking to replace it even though we've only owned it for 14 months.

1-0 out of 5 stars But Using the Headset Jack was Terrible

1-0 out of 5 stars No more Epson printers for me!
As others have pointed out: Good News is that it prints handsomely when it works. All the rest is bad news. Incredibly poor user interface with tiny text on a dim LCD screen and buttons with labels like "1" and "2". Wouldn't matter except you'll spend more time working on the dang thing than printing with it. Inkjets clogged every other day, then finally one clogged up permanently. I wasn't at all sad because it was such an unpleasant printer to work with. Paper jams, paper tray falling off, slow boot-up, consumed ink like a drunken sailor. And What Ink! $50 a pop. Lasted about a year. I never even tried the roll paper option, but you could tell that would be a bear to get working right.

My previous Epson printer had been OK, but I threw this one into the garbage bin with a particular glee. A very frustrating machine. I'm trying a Canon next time. With NO LCD DISPLAY.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Ever Owned!
This Epson 925 printer is the best I've ever owned.I've owned HP, Lexmark, and Compaq. This one is just the best.Easy, reliable, can use multiple types of digital camera cards, cheap ink refills and cartridges last a long time.I like it so much, that I bought a second one for my son.Highly recommend!!!Works great with XP Professional!

1-0 out of 5 stars Guzzles ink, constant clogging, expensive ink
The heads need constant cleaning, and cleaning uses up a lot of ink. Cleaning often clogs the heads even worse. The cartridges are small and expensive. They have a chip that disables them after a certain amount of use, whether they are really used up or not. You'll spend more time and ink cleaning heads than printing. Print quality is okay if you can get the heads clean, and if you have any ink left by then. Built-in media card reader is nice. ... Read more

An analog signal transfers data smoothly and reliably, while 150-degree viewing angles allow multiple users a clear view of the screen. Two inches larger than the standard in LCD monitor sizes, the 17-inch display makes the most of both practical and playful applications. A sturdy black frame protects the brains without detracting from your graphics. Samsung includes a three-year warranty covering parts and service.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor for great price
I bought my 170N for the PC I was building, and I've yet to regret my purchase. The thin bezel makes it look expensive compared to monitors with loads of plastic around them. The colors are beautiful. However, the whites look silver and vice-versa often. Black looks glitchy but it doesn't deter from performance really. It does go into an energy-save mode, which is a plus. Overall, good buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy Samsung at your own RISK
I bought a Samsung flat-panel LCD television in March, and it the panel went dead in April.I brought it to a one of Samsung's certified dealers for repair, and waited and waited. Finally in May, I was told that the the television panel was indeed defective and couldn't be fixed, so the manufacturer was obligated to replace it under the warranty. It's now September, and guess what, I'm still waiting for the replacement.Buy from Samsung at your own risk. From my own experience, Samsung does stand by their products. For a few dollars more, buy one of the better, more reliable brands.

I bought this monitor to replace a 19" CRT.I bought this particular monitor because of an April 3, 2003 review in PC Magazine on flat panel displays. This was viewed as what "should be your next display," ranked #1 among all of those reviewed.Somehow, in this very short couple of months, there is now a 171N and 172N (for more money). This 170N remains terrific. This was a good choice.

Regarding the CRT contrast: Powered by a Thinkpad 21, I could only get 8 bit color at 1200x1600 and only 16-bit color at 1280x1024.On this Samsung, I get 1280x1024 at 16bit.The screen is *very* bright, actually too bright at anything other than the lowest settings. ... Read more
