    Apple PowerBook Notebook 17" M9110LL/A (1.33-GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD-R/CD-RW Drive)

    Editorial Review

Faster and far more capable than any other Apple notebook to date, the freshly unveiled 17-inch PowerBook G4 may be the most sophisticated portable computer ever released. Featuring an enormous display, an unrivalled feature set and virtually no performance bottlenecks, the stunning yet undeniably pricey 17-inch PowerBook G4 is ready to satisfy even the most discriminating professional or personal user.

Don't let the clock speed fool you. The system's PowerPC G4 processor is a real step up from last year's 1 GHz G4 chip, running at 1.33 GHz and featuring 512 KB Level 2 cache for rapid retrieval of recently accessed data. Apple has added 512 MB of ultra-fast PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics processor with 64 MB dedicated video memory, thus ensuring smooth operation during high-demand tasks such as 3-D games, 3-D drawing and multitasking.

This high-speed architecture continues throughout the unit, where you'll find connectivity options such a standard FireWire interface, an ultra-fast Apple-designed FireWire 800 port, two 480 Mbps USB 2.0 ports, integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet, 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless, and built-in Bluetooth for the new breed of cordless digital peripherals. Storage facilities include a spacious ATA/100 80 GB hard disk and a versatile DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive through which you can burn audio CDs, backup critical and write DVD-R discs at 2X speed.

Visually, the aluminum alloy-clad 17-inch PowerBook G4 is as dramatic as it is functional. Sporting the largest widescreen display of any notebook and the same screen dimensions as a 19-inch CRT monitor, the unit is nevertheless surprisingly thin and lightweight at 15.4 by 10.2 by 1 inches and 6.8 pounds. Other unique perks include a tap/double tap/drag trackpad, a convenient backlit keyboard for low-light situations, and a DVI output for the efficient digital connection of LCD monitors. Battery life is estimated at an admirable 4.5 hours under ideal conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I switched from 10+ years of Microsoft's platform, MACS rule
This powerbook is a work of art..Very well thought out from the hardware to the software.....
The windows platform has only one advantage over Mac products ....their price point. I have had this Powerbook for 2 1/2weeks and have only used my PC three times (to get files I needed).

I know the prices are higher on the Mac side, but the money is well spent.....If you can afford a MAC then get one, you will not be sorry

    Hope is helps someone

2-0 out of 5 stars First Class Computer -- Need Upgrades for Support
As other reviewers have stated, the hardware itself is great. The computer is visually stunning. And the OS is rock-solid and user-friendly.

Some people have complained about the size for traveling. It's about as small as a 17" computer could be -- but if you are sitting in coach and the person in front of you reclines their seat, it's hard to use. (Get the 12" if you think this might be a problem for you.)

Finally, a word on Apple service. I had some problems with this computer and needed to send it back to Apple several times -- which is a bad thing. On the other hand, I finally reached Roberto, a Powerbook specialist in AppleCare, who was understanding and expedited my repair -- which is a good thing. 4-stars -- would have been 5-stars except for the hardware problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cost a lot, but it's a good computer
Now I've been down on Apple because they charge 2X for a computer built by they same people making computers for everyone else. But I have to admit, this thing looks great. Now I jumped ship to Centrino because I needed more battery life, but if I was to buy Apple again, this would be the one. ... Editorial Review

When it comes to the sleek Apple iMac models, the 800 MHz SuperDrive is the cream of the crop. Sporting the same space-efficient design as the other members of the iMac family, the 800 MHz SuperDrive nevertheless packs more power and features into its familiar dome-shaped housing than even some Power Macs. If multimedia performance and computing speed are just as important to you as a tiny footprint and clean looks, the latest iMac should warrant very careful consideration.

Driven by an 800 MHz PowerPC G4 CPU, 256 KB of on-chip Level 2 cache, and a generous 256 MB of SDRAM (expandable to one full GB), the 800 MHz SuperDrive is ready to handle most any standard computer task. To ensure the machine doesn't bog down even during the most graphically intensive operation, Apple has also included a super-fast nVidia GeForce4 MX graphics processor with 32 MB of DDR video memory.

However, the crowning touch on this model won't be found inside its case. Instead, it sits atop the slim adjustable neck that has become an iMac trademark. In lieu of the slick 15-inch, flat-screen LCD panels you'll find on other iMacs, the 800 MHz SuperDrive is capped by a crystal clear 17-inch widescreen display that helps deliver your applications, games, and multimedia like never before.

With the 800 MHz SuperDrive, saving, transferring, or sharing files and data is never a problem. The unit is equipped with a massive 80 GB Ultra ATA hard disk for permanent storage and a combination DVD-R/CD-RW drive through which you can back up files, burn and enjoy audio CDs, and record large-volume video and audio DVDs. The system also features two state-of-the-art FireWire ports for high-speed uploads and downloads from external devices such as video camcorders or Apple's own iPod, and no fewer than five USB ports (two of which are conveniently located on the keyboard) for peripherals such as digital cameras and joysticks.

For its size, the 800 MHz SuperDrive is very well connected. On the rear panel you'll find welcome perks such as a headphone jack, an external VGA monitor port, a speaker mini-jack for the enclosed pair of Apple Pro loudspeakers, and an Ethernet jack for broadband connections. Low-speed Internet and e-mail access is available through the unit's built-in 56K V.90 modem, and high-speed wireless access may be added with Apple's optional AirPort card. An optical Apple Pro mouse, a 108-key Apple Pro keyboard with 15 programmable multimedia keys, and an integrated two-port USB hub complete the hardware picture.

Your 800 MHz SuperDrive will arrive ready to go with pre-installed versions of both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best computer I've ever owned
Before purchasing my iMac, I was a PC user, but I always thought that it would be great to own a Mac.Since I got my iMac, I have never looked back.I can honestly say that this is the best computer I've ever owned.

The operating system, Mac OS X, is extremely stable and almost flawless. And the applications that come built into OS X (iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie to name a few) are wonderful.I have over 1100 songs on iTunes which automatically syncs with my iPod when I plug it in.

Of course, I also love how beautiful the iMac is.The screen looks as if it just floats in mid-air.

I am so glad that I "switched" to a Mac.I absolutley love this computer, and I know the next time I buy a computer, it will be a Mac.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avid PC User Switches to iMac
Awesome product!I own a desktop and laptop(Win xp) in a wireless network.I recently purchased an iMac with 17"FP/1.25 GHz/1 GB RAM/160 GB HDD/DVD-RW/CD-RW drive/Bluetooth/Extreme wireless card.It took less than 10 minutes to set it up and have it connected to my wireless network.iMac detected the wireless connection in a second! What an awesome computer! What a great product! Thanks, Apple!

4-0 out of 5 stars Irresistible but with a few catches.
(Since writing the following, I notice that Apple has just reduced the number of catches: they've knocked 10% off the price and increased the speed of the processor by 20%.Still I'd gladly trade the extra little speakers for either a Sound-In Jack or the option of an external USB sound-processor such as the iMic.The speakers are throwaways if you're running your computer through a good stereo system. Moreover, it's not clear to me that they're compatible with iSub.)

If you must have the chic, compact, dream machine with the beautiful screen, this no doubt is it. But don't be surprised if Apple makes a few changes come July. For one, unlike the eMacs and old iMacs the new iMacs don't have a Sound-In jack (should you plan to digitalize your tapes and LP's), and external USB audio processors can be less dependable. For another, the Apple discussion boards show some owners complaining about "burned out" pixels and proclaiming the superiority of good old-fashioned CRT's (the eMac). And finally, G4 processor or no, to expect this lightweight to perform up to the speed and efficiency of a Power Mac with its floor-standing CPU is testimony to the effectiveness of Apple's promotions department. ... Editorial Review

Now there's even more to love about Apple's iBook notebook. Weighing in at a respectable 5.9 pounds and featuring an 800 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, a 30 GB hard drive, and 256 MB of RAM--plus AirPort wireless networking and FireWire, USB, and Ethernet ports--the iBook connects to hundreds of peripherals designed to fit your life.

This system features a brilliant 14.1-inch TFT XGA active-matrix display and razor-sharp 1,024 x 768 resolution. It's the perfect place for doing everything from working on spreadsheets to displaying your movies and digital pictures in millions of colors. (Incidentally, the iBook display scales down beautifully, again with millions of colors, for special games and applications optimized for 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 resolutions.)

Included is a combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for playing games and music CDs and enjoying DVD movies. The 800 MHz iBook ships with a 30 GB hard drive that provides exceptional storage space. In addition, this system comes with the ATI Mobility Radeon graphics accelerator with 16 MB of SDRAM and AGP 2x support for gorgeous 3-D graphics.

The iBook also comes loaded with iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, and iDVD application software, making it easier than ever before to manage your digital images, video, and music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The jaguar of laptops for discerning users
I have had the Apple iBook 800MHz laptop for about 6 months and have yet to experience any technical difficulties.

If you're seeking a stable, reliable, high-performance, and visually appealing laptop, you should seriously consider the venerable Apple iBook. Though more expensive than today's P4 1.X laptop PCs, Mac OS X alone is enough to convert even the most diehard PC user. Though getting around the "unique" interface of the OS can take some getting used to, you will surely appreciate its stability and user-friendliness.

With upgraded memory, an AirPort card for wireless web surfing and Office:Mac, you will have everything you need to work or play with incredible performance for everyday tasks. Throw in the iLife suite of applications for DVD playback, music/MP3 management and much more, and you have an amazing productivity pack for multimedia, a longtime strength of Apple computers.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the iBook for those seeking a trusty companion for work, play, or multimedia. The 800MHz G3 processor has never been insufficient for any task I've thrown at it and the AirPort card makes an ideal accessory for connecting to the Internet without wires.

If you have $1400-2000 to spend on a laptop, don't overlook Apple.

Edit: My pre-owned iBook is now nearly 11 months old and has developed the rampant logic board failure, which has plagued many a user. Luckily, with about a month left in my 1-yr AppleCare warranty, I did not have to pay a cent and waited about a week and a half to get it back.

Please keep in mind that if you purchase a newer G3 iBook, you may very well be one of those who experiences a logic board failure, and apparently it can come back again and again. Buy the 3-yr AppleCare Protection Plan and you won't be sorry.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Should work well...but doesn't.
I have used Mac's for a bout 4 years now and I quite like apple products for the most part (other than the usual complaints!). But I bought this ibook in Dec of 2002, and at this point I really wish I could get my money back. Maybe I just got a lemon, but it has already had to be sent back to apple once (took over a month to get back too!). After 2 months of heavy usage (I travel, and it's my only computer) the machine just died and would not start up. After much difficulty sending it off (and hours of stupid tech support walk throughs)they replaced the hard-drive and optical-drive. I don't really think it fixed the problem though. The machine gets very hot with extended use, and I am still having the same problems as I was before I had to send my machine off. Problems like slugish performance (that wasn't the case when i first got the machine, as it was very quick), programs crashing unexpectantly, modem errors, programs not performing correctly, etc. I am very afraid the hard-drive will just die on me again, so I neurotically back up my data every week. honestly I really think it has to do with the fact this machine gets so hot, but that is just my layman theory.
Basically I wish I had spent the extra cash and got a powerbook. Maybe that would have worked better.
I hope this reveiw helps you make a better buying decision. Maybe I just got a lemon, but I wouldn't buy an ibook ever again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The switch was worth it!
I love my new I-book.In addition to it's sleek appearance it offers everything my PC offered plus more. The picture is so crisp and clear, everyone at work mentioned it looked better than most of their television sets at home. The sound quality isn't the greatest, but isn't an I book all about portability.I bought some inexpensive headphones and the sound is now incredible.I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.Buy an Ibook it's worth switching to! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely stable and elegant (except for that dock)
First, I wouldlike to state that I have used Macintoshes since May 1986 and would rather own an old, slow, second-hand Mac than have to grapple with any version of Windows, including XP. There's absolutely no reason for anyone who can't afford a new Mac to switch to a PC.

I have installed Panther (10.3.2) on two computers, my own B&W that now sports an Encore 1 GHz G4 processor, and my husband's 733 MHz Quicksilver, and we had no problems--not until we started downloading Apple's updates. The 10.3.9 combination update seemed to make both machines slow down. I have no idea how badly it has affected the Quicksilver (with 512 MB RAM) because I don't get to use it enough (I just get to do all the "techie" stuff on it *G*) but the slowness of the B&W (with 364 MB RAM) has become unbearable and I think I need to return to 10.3.2. Or maybe I should try more RAM first. :-(

I don't understand why some people have had trouble with OS X. Now, if I can install Panther on a machine with a bus as slow as the B&W, and a processor that isn't even supported by Apple, why are others having trouble on newer, faster machines? All I did was put the CD in the DVD or CD rewriter, hit the install button, let the machine restart from the CD, reformat the hard drive with OS X's Disk Utility, start the install and leave the installer to do its work. What could be easier?

First impressions, coming straight to Panther from OS 9, weren't entirely favourable. After all, OS 9 wasn't considered the best OS of its time for nothing! And it was so much better with Action Utilities, just as OS 7.6 (another great Mac OS) was better with Now Utilities.

    My gripes:

    1. I miss the ability to configure the apple menu the way I want it. I especially miss the way Action Utilities allowed me to navigate anywhere on my hard drive from this menu. Bring back a user-configurable apple menu, please, Apple! (Power-on Software confirmed that they will not be releasing an OS X version of AU.)

    2. I miss the Action Utilities user-configurable short cuts--especially the ones that allowed me to open an application or switch between applications: e.g., control-p to open or switch to Photoshop, control-shift-p for PageMaker, control-q for Quicken, control-a for Acrobat. The command-tab feature (which was also part of OS 9) just isn't as fast. As for clicking on an alias in the dock, that's way too slow! It's tidier than clicking on aliases on the desktop, but that's about all. There ARE keyboard shortcuts in Panther, but they allow the user only to change the shortcuts of menu items that already have shortcuts. How about allowing us to make short cuts for ANYTHING, Apple? Please! I have no idea why this feature wasn't incorporated into the Mac OS long ago. If a third-party developer can do it, surely Apple can.

    3. At first I had trouble coping with the way windows open on the desktop. It gave me a peculiar sense of claustrophobia. Yes I know: very strange! However, once I asked for column display I soon got used to this feature. It's actually very nifty if you have more than one hard disk, or several partitions.

    4. I didn't like the dock at all. After several months of using Panther I still don't care for it. Action Utilities had a similar, though much plainer, feature, and I didn't like that either. I would have asked for it to be hidden all the time but for its calendar, which I found mildly useful. I can see the point of the dock for newcomers to the Macintosh environment (particularly those who are also first-time computer users) and for this reason I wouldn't want Apple to get rid of it. I know I can hide it, but what's the point? It merely makes opening a new application far too time-consuming. If Apple would only provide user-configurable short cuts to open/switch between applications, or a user-configurable apple menu--preferably both--those of us who don't like taking our fingers off the keys just to open a new application could keep the dock hidden all the time.

    5. It isn't easy to work out how OS X works, as it was with OS 9 and its predecessors, which didn't have invisible files. I wish Apple would make all OS X's files visible. Why do some have to be invisible anyway?

    6. Safari 1.3 quits if I hit the close window button. This happens on both my B&W and the Quicksilver. Just as well it's not working in OS 9 because at least I don't have to restart my machine.

    7. Old applications work noticeably slower in Classic than when our machines are booted in OS 9. This probably has more to do with the machines than with Panther. In some cases it might also be the sheer age of the software (made for pre-Power PC processors).

    The good things:

    1. Panther is so stable. While OS 9 and its predecessors didn't crash anywhere near as often (or as badly) as their Windows equivalents, I haven't had Panther crash at all.

    2. It's good to be able to use all my old software. Even Word 5.1 (from 1992) and Quicken 5 (1994) work in Classic.

    3. There's no doubt that Panther's interface is very elegant (the dock notwithstanding).

    4. TextEdit is head, shoulders and even more above Simpletext. It's virtually a word processing program. I suspect the version shipping with Tiger is even more so.

    5. I love being able to get my Mac to tell me the time on the hour. I desperately needed something more able to catch my attention than a mere sound, which I soon found my brain was all too capable of stopping my ears from hearing! But it's very hard to ignore a voice.

    6. Mail is fantastic, though it took me a little while to get used to after so many years of Outlook Express. The only feature I miss from OE is the name and email address of the sender and the size of the incoming email (in the Activities window).

    7. The iLife suite of applications is awesome--extremely good value-for-money, especially if you are a keen photographer and want a decent application (iPhoto) for displaying photos and even fixing faults in them, are into making your own movies, transferring ones you already have on tape onto DVDs (iMovie and iDVD), creating your own music (GarageBand), downloading music from the iTunes store (or anywhere else) or even just turning your own CDs into MP3s for your iPod (iTunes).

Should you upgrade to Panther? Well, that depends. We probably did so before we were really ready, but my husband wanted to transfer his video tapes onto DVD and I tend to be a download freak. I will download trials of almost anything (that's how I landed up buying Action Utilities) and it's been absolutely ages since there was anything new to try in OS 9. If, however, you find you absolutely need to update many of your oft-used pieces of software, you might as well take the plunge. Mind you, now that Tiger is out you'd probably be best going straight to that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hate it
This is the worst os ive ever used you can't hold down the button like windows and its exteremly hard to use you also cant get games for it

3-0 out of 5 stars Tiger Instead - New Mac - New Operating System
I guess if you needed Panther now you would buy it, but if you're not in a hurry, pre-order the Tiger Operating System (Available April 29th).It may even be cheaper than Panther, currently at $149CDN.

I got Panther with my new iMac, and I like it, but Tiger has a few features I would use every day:
    1. Widgets - I played with Konfabulator and loved it.
    2. Spotlight - will really simplify finding old docs, emails, etc.
    3. QuickTime 7 - I'm a big fan and can't wait to see the improvements.
    4. TextEdit - there are some new improvements that I've been waiting for sometime, including saving documents in HTML format.

Looking back and comparing it to my old machine with the Jaguar Operating System, the things that made a big impression were not necessarily to do with Pather improvements, I think it was more to dow with the new iMac itself and the prepackaged software. With Tiger, I can see there's lots for me take advantage of. ... Canon ZR50MC MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5" LCD, Digital Still Mode & MMC Card Slot

Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $799.00

    Editorial Review

The ZR50MC is on Canon's high-end of MiniDV camcorders, but still sells for a reasonable price. Its 22x optical zoom out focuses the ZR50MC's siblings and much of the competition, letting you get extremely close to a subject without any of the degradation associated with digital zoom.

Its bright 2.5-inch LCD can be swiveled around, letting you record from a variety of angles. And if you opt for using the viewfinder, you'll see in color instead of the black and white many other camcorders use.

You can enhance your ZR50MC via the advanced accessory shoe, which allows you to connect a directional microphone or video light. And the camera comes with an 8 MB Secure Digital card to capture still images, although the quality is only fair--typical of digital camcorders.

The quality of captured video, on the other hand, proved quite excellent. Our video was sharp and bright, even when viewed at high resolution on our PC. The camera's night mode, while not a true IR darkness mode, did record well in low-light situations. You can also take advantage of the ZR50MC's extended recording feature, which let us capture over four hours of video on a single tape.

We did sometimes hear a slight hum from the camera's motor when watching recorded video, but it wasn't obtrusive and often wasn't noticeable.

The ZR50MC also functions as an analog-to-digital converter, letting you take the analog contents of your VHS or 8mm tapes and convert them to digital, either recording them on the ZR50MC's tape or saving them to your PC.

For all the features that are packed into the compact, lightweight body of the ZR50MC, its price tag makes it a perfect fit for a digital video enthusiast looking for a powerful camera at a still reasonable price. --J. Curtis

5-0 out of 5 stars great camcorder... affordable cost... can't go wrong
i've had my zr50 for two months now, and i love it!! when i was shopping around i considered the zr50mc and elura 40mc. i'm a mac user so, i had to make sure i bought a camcorder that supported mac os x, imovie and iphoto. after reading the consumer reviews on both camcorders from a few different sites, including the reviews on amazon.com, i opted for the zr50 and have not been disappointed.

i read a lot about the motor humming noises, but truthfully i don't know what humming noise was being referred to. the recorded movies are sharp and crisp; the colors bright.

i do agree with the "night mode" feature being a bit lacking, although the camcorder will record in low-light environment just fine.

no complaints on the battery life and required charging time.

the analog pass through feature is awesome...allows me to edit older movies recorded from an analog camcorder on my ibook!

i was also surprised by the quality of still shots taken on the zr50's photo (digital camera) feature...crisp, vivid colors, not too grainy. after reading some of the reviews, i didn't expect much from the still image feature.

bottom line -- the zr50 is a great buy, and it's affordability can't be beat. works fabulously with mac os x (and jaguar) and compatible with imovie and iphoto...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camcorder At Great Price!
This is an awesome camcorder! I've had it for about two weeks now, and I love it. The video quality is very good and its compact size makes it very portable. I have a Apple iMac G4 and the ZR50 runs outstanding with it.

I am an amateur filmmaker and I was previously using my father's Canon GL1, which is a great camcorder, but I needed something for myself. I was skeptical of a high quality camcorder at a low price. So I did all the research and liked the ZR50.

The still quality isn't that good, but that is not why I bought it. If you are looking for a nice digital video and still camera, this is not for you. It is a nice bonus, though, to take low quality photos and share them with people over the Internet.

If you have read that the motor noise is a problem, well, the same noise is on my father?s Canon GL1 which is $... So, you make the decision to associate the noise with this particular camcorder or not.

If you want a small digital camcorder that takes great video at a good price, this is one for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal!
I bought this camcorder just before Christmas. I've read all the reviews before decided to buy it, they are really helpful. This machine is perfect to me, having all the great features described by previous customers.

And I had a real good deal having a free carring bag and free software from Cannon and even a rebate. So, before you pay your credit card, go to check whether there is a rebate or discount offer from Manufacture. Sometimes, you have to browse some where else to find it, I don't trust other retailers, although they do seem to offer better price (they have very high shipping fee!!!). ... Read more

    Apple 20 GB 2nd Generation iPod M8738LL/A
    by Apple Computer
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

Apple has revamped the now-classic iPod with several exceptional new features. The new 20 GB model packs 4,000 songs and a 10-hour battery life into a stunning 6.5-ounce package, and Apple ups the ante with new iTunes 3 software; a redesigned, touch-sensitive scroll wheel; red-hot FireWire digital file transfers; a wired remote control; and an overhauled calendar/scheduler.

The iPod's setup and interface are still the same: just plug it into your Mac and all your iTunes songs and playlists are automatically downloaded into iPod at blazing FireWire speed--typically 15 seconds or less. Don’t forget that the player also doubles as a FireWire drive for applications and other files. This new model also comes with a FireWire port cover to protect the player from dirt and other gunk.

In addition to its 20 GB hard drive, iPod has a 32 MB memory cache. The cache is made of solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts, so it's not affected by movement of the device. Skip protection on the iPod works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache.

The iPod has a large, high-quality LCD (liquid crystal display) for viewing up to six lines of text. And the LCD features an LED (light-emitting diode) backlight for clear visibility in low-light situations--indoors or outdoors. Pocket-size and just 6.5 ounces, it weighs appreciably less than the stack of CDs it can store music from.

Featuring Apple's new iTunes 3 software, the iPod can synchronize with newly added music files and playlists. Simply plug the iPod back into your Mac and the changes are automatically updated in seconds. And with iTunes 3, you can rip MP3s, create playlists, and burn custom CDs all from one simple interface. And thanks to a cool new partnership with audible.com, you can now download audiobooks to the iPod.

You can also download your calendar and schedule to the iPod from applications like Entourage, Palm Desktop, and Mac OS X Address Book. Plus, the iPod now has a built-in digital clock.

The iPod's rechargeable lithium-polymer battery is charged using the FireWire cable when connected to your Mac. You can also recharge the iPod using the included FireWire cable and AC adapter when you're on the go.

The iPod supports MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR (variable bit rate), WAV, and AIFF files, and is firmware upgradable. To use the iPod with your Mac, you'll need a FireWire port and you must be running either Mac OS 9.2.1 (or later) or Mac OS X 10.1 (or later).

The unit comes with a wired remote control, revamped earbud-style headphones, a FireWire cable, power adapter, CD-ROM with iTunes 3, and a carrying case with belt clip. It's backed by a 90-day limited warranty. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple 20 GB Second Generation iPod
If you need more songs and you are willing to spend $499.99 I would recommend this iPod to you. This is the second generation 20 gigabyte iPod. This iPod holds about 4,000 songs at near CD-quality. I don't have this version but I do have the 10 gigabyte version (plus another few iPods). I think Apple has designed their MP3 players extremely well. I love the white coating on the top and the metal-finish at the back. People do not see too much difference between the first and second generation iPods. There really isn't too much change accept now the scroll wheel isn't mechanical; that's the only big change. There is a cover for the connectivity ports and the 10GB version is a bit thinner than the first generation 5GB version. This iPod is about .80" in depth which is pretty thick. The 10GB is still .78" but you can still see the difference. Now iPods are really thin especially with the mini but the new fourth generation is extremely thin as well. This weights about 6.5 ounces which is kind of heavy but it will still suite you well. The battery life on this is about 10 hours which isn't too bad compared to the third generation iPod's 8 hour battery life. I would recommend you getting a case so the metal or white plastic on top will not get scatched. This iPod has really everything you need: playlists, calender, games, phone book, etc. There is only one game though (Bricks) but I love Bricks and I think you will enjoy it as well. On my 10GB version I have about 1,500 songs which fit perfectally onto my playlists. It comes with MusicMatch Jukebox but I would recommend getting iTunes. I would look into the iPod but not this one. Get the fourth-generation iPod or any other kind of iPod you like. But this is all around a very good package and especially now it's really cheap!

    1-0 out of 5 stars Service.What service?
I bought the iPod from Amazon and it was delivered about a week ago. I also bought the Apple Care Protection plan. The product seems to work fine except I am having minor but irksom problems 'navigating' using the buttons and wheel thing. I am using it for an Audible book which is supposed to start where you left off. Well, after 7 hours it decided to start at beginning again. I try fast forward and the thing goes to the next book.I want to just finish the last hour of the one that is being played.

So, I call what they call Customer Service and find that they won't give me any advice whatever until I FAX in a copy of my shipping document from Amazon and another sheet with a magic number on it from within the extended service package. They say that Amazon is not an authorized reseller and that they cannot check my order and date of sale from Amazon.

I explain that I do not have a FAX machine, and that I will go send the stuff in a few days when I feel like walking that far using my crutches.

I think that it is probably a good product, but if you are in any way handicapped and it is not convenient for you to run around to get their service, I recommend not buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE gadget of the year!Maybe Decade!!!
This is amazing.A must have for any traveler. The easy firewire plug for charging is great.I like it better then the funky new charging firewire layout. This is simply standard. The unit itself it pretty tough.I dropped it running and it didn't skip or anything.Amazing battery time and everything. The one thing I don't like is the way Apple set up their mp3 sharing so that you can only copy music onto it or delete music. You can't transfer music back off it.This is probably to keep the record companies happy.iTunes is great. And the unit is great simply to use as a portable Hard Drive as well. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Try and get the 1st one.
This one is ok, but needs the adapter.I prefer the first one Belkin released.I have the cassette adaptor and cup holder in my Honda Civic.Works like a charm.!!!STAY AWAY from the FM transmitters.!!!I find them (I bought the one from Belkin and Griffen) both to be a waste of money...interference, static, etc...it defeats the whole purpose of digital music: clarity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Auto charger for all iPods?
"Auto Charger for all iPods" is Griffin's strapline.

Well that is true as long as you buy an extra cable for the new version, or remember to take the cable that comes with the iPod.

Great work by Griffin... take an original product, change the strapline to include the new iPod and add a note on the back to say this device will only work if you go out and buy an additional item. Hey presto...Griffin have launched a 'new' product.

Just think of the other possibilities..."Sony memory stick, NOW compatible with all PDAs"(as long as you buy an adaptor).
Office 200x, compatible with all versions of Windows (as long as you buy an upgrade)...Damn it, I see where you got the inspiration from!!

Still it works, I suppose that's got to be worth a 2 points, (the extra point is for the marketing department.Good job chaps

2-0 out of 5 stars firewire cable is useless
compare this first to a belkin auto charger and you'll notice the difference in the firewire cable. you'd need that flat thinggy to connect the charger to the new 3G ipods. look for other alternatives if belkins price too high.

Play, download, import, and do more with Apple’s premiere digital music player iTunes 3. And get access to your photo albums directly from iMovie and iDVD, and bring in music for your slideshows from iTunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
This is a collection of iTunes 3, iPhoto 2, iMovie 3, and iDVD 3 that Apple offers on all their latest machines with Superdrive installed. All but iDVD 3 are available as downloads from the Apple website, but it is worth the $...or whatever to get them altogether and include the iDVD 3.The iDVD 3 is not available as a download because of its size (>1.3 gig)Each of the four programs is good, but the seamless combination of the four (five including iPod) makes this system an easy to learn combination. After looking for almost a year and a half at different software/hardware combinations for editing and converting (to digital for DVD), I decided on the Mac and the iLife package. There are certainly more powerful individual programs available on both the PC and Mac platforms, but this combination beats everything else that I looked at for ease of use and simplicity in learning.I am very pleasedwith my decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth four times the price
Where to start to talk about how amazing the latest offering is from Apple for the Macintosh? Let's take it one step at a time.

iMovie 3: Apple took their already great DV editing program and added so many new features it's almost mind boggling! Drag and drop from your iPhoto photo library. Drag and drop from your iTunes music library. Granted, you were able to do these things before in a somewhat clumsy way through the "import" command, but this makes it beyond easy. Chapter support (The ability to break up longer videos on DVD's to easily skip back and forth) for iDVD. Individual volume control for each audio track at any point in the track. One click access for all three of the other iApps. New titles, new transitions, the "Ken Burns" effect with stills. No other DV software available for ANY platform is as easy to use as this. Also if you download from Apple it's FREE!

iPhoto: Still mostly looks the same, but there is now support for the other digital lifestyle iApps built in. The "Retouch" editing feature works amazing well. Also if you download it from Apple it's FREE! If your into serious photo editing, you'll still want a companion program. Photoshop Elements is a good choice. 70% of Photoshop at 1/5 of the price.

iTunes: I honestly don't see much difference here. I'm sure changes were made to integrate it with the other iApps. Still a great program though. If you download it from Apple (deja vu) it's FREE!

iDVD: Some new themes, some new features make this a worthy addition to any SuperDrive equipped Mac. No other DVD authoring software I've seen is as easy to use and as intuitive as iDVD. AND if you download it from Apple it's....um....not available. iDVD can only be purchased as part of the iLife package AND then only installed if you have a Superdrive equipped (internal drive only and as far as I know ONLY if installed by Apple) G4 PowerMac.

Complaints: Yeah a few. iMovie crashed a few times while performing multiple operations (granted it was doing 4 "Ken Burns" and 5 transitions at the time) on my 933 SuperDrive G4 Quicksilver Tower. Also the Apple restricts iDVD to only those people who bought their SuperDrive equipped G4 computers. C'mon Apple! We bought the hardware. Let us configure it ourselves without penalties! Also, you must be running at least 10.1.5 or later (10.2 HIGHLY recommended). System 9 users are officially out in the cold for this product.

In conclusion: If you meet the hardware/software specs, this is a must buy! No SuperDrive? Find a fast online connection and download the other pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife puts it all together!
If you're on a Mac, you've probably used at least one of these programs by now. If not, you're missing out on what Steve Jobs calls "The hub of your digital lifestyle."

iMovie - For the amatuer film maker, or somebody who just wants to edit their own home movies, this is a cakewalk. Once you connect your camera through a Firewire port, you import your video. Add titles. Add fades, transitions, etc... Add some background music. Then, download it back to your camera (or, with a bridge, to a VCR). Better yet, save it out and import the video to iDVD for burning.

iDVD - I can't begin to tell you how easy this is. Create a menu (or select one of the many theme menus). Import your video. Click burn to DVD. It is literally that easy. I made a DVD of our improv troupe for all the members' Christmas gifts.

iTunes - If it's a music file... mp3, aiff, wav... it can import to iTunes. Create a music CD. Burn it as a standard or mp3 CD with a single click.

iPhoto - You can set this up to open and import the images as soon as your camera mounts to the desktop. Organize the images. Edit them for color or size. Then, burn a CD, make a slideshow, or even order a personalized bound book with your images and text.

The one major flaw of these programs has been the lack of manuals (except through third parties). A small price to pay for this kind of quality. Also, if you have no need for iDVD, the other three are available for download from the Apple web site. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great drive - just dont use it to store data
This was my fourth and possibly last LaCie drive.
Loved the spec, size, footprint, speed and yes its fairly quiet.
Unfortunatley however, and mine is not the first story, the drive is rather inept at actually storing data.

The drive was partitioned into two drives and worked well untill it started not opening folders. Instead it returned error 'unformatted drive' messages. This then spread to the whole of one drive before the next.
From reading other reviews the problem is the power down which wrecks the drive. Nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best
I purchased the 160 GB version of this drive (Iomega mechanism), plugged it in and went to work. The drive spins down on sleep with my iMac, comes back up immediately on hitting any key or moving the mouse, and is quieter than the iMac itself. I read one review by someone who also took a stab at Mac users in general in which it was noted that the Lacie operated hot (it does - the aluminum shell dissipates heat, as intended), and overheated overnight because it wouldn't sleep with the computer. Obviously, this is a Windows problem, not a Lacie problem. Consider the source. Another review mentioned noise - no such problem here (with the Iomega mechanism, anyway). It's also wicked fast, much faster than the Que 80 gig it replaced.

All in all, couldn't be happier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drive, great customer service
I have been using this drive for more than a year now. It's actually a replacement for the same model, since the first one died on me as a result of OS X's sleep mode feature. In fact, I have had other LaCie drives in the past that never failed. Although I'm aware of the fact that hard drives can fail at any given point in time, a LaCie drive has never failed on me as a result of the company's own manufacturing quality. Having said this, I recommend that while you have any firewire drive (any brand whatsoever) connected to your computer, don't put the CPU to sleep (just the drive and the screen, not the entire system). A short spike in current shoots through the FireWire connection on wakeup, which eventually will damage your external hard drive.

I am very pleased with LaCie. The drive works beautifully for backup and videoediting alike. Also, the company's customer service quickly sent me a replacement drive as the original was still under warranty. Since I don't put my CPU to sleep anymore, no problems with the drive whatsoever. A solid drive at a good price for anyone who needs to rely on their backup data. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great plug and play drive
I needed an external DVD-R drive to work with my Macintosh computer, and this one fit the bill perfectly. I opened the box, plugged in the power and firewire cables that were included with the drive, and within minutes, was burning DVD's.

If you are a user of Apple's DVD Studio Pro, this drive works seamlessly with it, and is very fast when burning 2x rated disks. I have burned a good 2 hours worth of video to a DVD in as little as 25 minutes.

If you do use this drive, make sure to buy quality media. I wasted lots of moneyon failed disks, and was going to blame the drive for it, but then tried using the Verbatim DVD-R 2x disk that shipped with the unit. I have now burned more than 10 verbatim disks in a row with this drive and have experienced no further media or drive failures.

I'd highly recommend this drive to anyone needing an external DVD-R drive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sounding and great looking speakers
I found that the Creature speakers not only look great with my iMac G5, but also have amazing sound quality, certainly equal to that of any other computer speaker system and demonstratively better than most. The touch volume control on the right small speaker responds quickly and smoothly, and when used with the correct volume settings on the computer and music source, should satisfy any listener. The tone controls on the large bass speaker are convenient and functional. The system is a 5 star winner at a most attractive price.Read the operating instructions to learn how the volume control works, plug it in, and enjoy great music at any volume. You may find as I did that your computer offers different music settings for different types of music, all of which enhance the output of the speakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great design, great sound, great price
I spent almost all of my time with these speakers at the Apple Store during my first ever visit to the place!

I echo the same positive feedback that the earlier reviewers have given. This is the purest sound I have ever heard from a speaker set of this size and budget.Aesthetically, trendy looking white Creature is goes very well with other white creatures like the iMac, iBook, and iPod.An excellent choice for desktop speakers.Combine them with the iPod and you don't need any other music system in the house.

The interface is very simple and the bass range is very excellent and beats many of the bigger speaker systems.Really worth the price.Recommended even for audiophiles.

Please, do not buy the grey Creatures. I bought them on the assumption that the "silver-ish" color would go well with my PowerBook. The pictures on the box and online made the "grey" seem much more silver than it is in reality. It is probably the ugliest, dullest gray I've see on a product in a while. The way it contrasts with my PowerBook is not aesthetically appealing whatsoever. I am very dissapointed and I feel mislead by JBL in terms of the color I thought I was buying. I mean, why have such a sweet looking trio of speakers and slap such an ugly color on it?!
I do like the white color a lot. I am hopefully going to take back my grey ones and switch them out for white ones without having to pay a restocking fee to the Apple store. That probably won't happen, though, so I'll have to pay ten extra bucks for the white color I should have got in the first place.

LESSON: Buy the WHITE Creature II Speakers and you won't regret the aesthetics of your beautiful and appealing new set of noise making apparatuses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should have bought this one first!
Apple builds products that are easy for anyone to use. They don't require a lot of knowledge about the hardware. The base station was very easy to set up.The Airport Setup Assistant runs you through all of the important steps in language that is as plain as possible. If you want finer control, you can then move to the Airport Admin Utility.

The only problem I ran into during setup was getting the base station to work with my Comcast cable service. The first call to tech support ran me through the essential setup items, making sure that I had everything set up properly. The second call was to Comcast, who said it certainly wasn't their problem.Back to Apple. After that call, I really can't say enough good things about Apple's tech support. For one, it's not outsourced. You're talking to someone who speaks English very well. The second thing is that they're not working off of a script as far as I can tell. They try the standard fixes, of course, but they're able to work with whatever comes up.After probably 30 minutes or so of trying everything we could think of, the support person went up the chain - I've never seen that from tech support before - to a product specialist. When that advice didn't work the next step was to actually have me talk to a product specialist.By that time it was 30 minutes or so after quitting time on a Friday, so the product specialist was no longer available. The support rep actually apologized for not being able to put me on the line with the specialist.I was impressed that he worked as long as he did after quitting time on a Friday without any hint of trying to hurry along and get rid of me.I was about to call tech support again today (Saturday), but decided to give the setup one more try.It worked!I don't know why or how the problem was solved.I'm just happy it all works now.

The Airport Extreme Base Station is a little expensive, but compared to the grief I've had with a less expensive wireless router, and the excellent support I received from Apple, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A snap to set up and use!
The Airport Extreme from Apple is all that the information and video says that it is.Easy to set up, use, and maintain.

If you have a wired or wireless network and are looking for a way to upgrade or expand your current network, then this product is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but needs better Windows software
This is an excellent product and certainly recommend it. However, the included configuration software for Windows XP is not easy to use. For example, it lacks an easy way to determine whether log-in to a PPP over Ethernet account has been successful. The software for my old Linksys router was much better. This was surprising to me considering this is an Apple product. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this product. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Extreme Card
I bought an Extreme Card for my G4 from ameris and it was faulty
didn't load and wouldn't let the computer come on.Sent a note on the feedback and didn't get any response.Looks like I will have to eat the card and the cost. Not very happy with the vendor that amazon let sell the product on their site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy from Mac-pro.com
Great item, but do not buy from mac-pro.com.Received a defective card and they were unwilling to replace it.I am left with all shipping charges and a 20% RESTOCKING fee. Will you end up buying my defective card?I got another card from another vendor and it works really well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install and set up
I bought this for a IMac G5.It took less than 5 minutes to install (open computer case, plug antenna cable into card, slide card in slot, close case, power up).All that was left was to insert setup CD and about 1 minute later my existing wireless network was recognized and available.Reception of the wireless signal appears to be slightly stronger than what I get with my Dell laptop and its card however I have no accurate way to measure.

It does exactly what I bought it for which was hassle free access to my network. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Please read before you buy this
The first thing I noticed about this printer was the incredibly noisy paper feeder. The first time I printed I thought that I had not unpacked it entirely.

Setting that aside the printer seemed to do a pretty good job until it was about a year old.At that time it simply stopped working.I spent money to buy new ink cartridges but to no avail. Finally I called Epson and they agreed to send me a new printer and asked me to return the old one.

In about another eight months the second printer died.Coincidentally (or not) right at the time the ink cartridge was empty.Since I already had purchased spare ink I followed the instructions to replace the cartridge only to find that it would still not print.

I used a Q-tip to try and clean the nozzle but it did not good. At that point I decided to look for a new printer. When I checked Amazon on this printer I was relieved (in a way) to find out that I was not alone in my troubles.

This is now my third Epson printer that has died this way.You can be sure it will be my last.I will never, never buy another Epson product.

Let me sum my feelings up like this.Today is the first day above 50 degrees in the north eastern US since making it through the long, cold, snowy winter. The fact that I have chosen to spend even a moment of this day trying to warn others away from this product should speak volumes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great until it dies
Works very well until it dies in under 18 months.Epson customer service is of no help after the warranty expires.I will not buy an Epson printer again - just purchased a Canon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only Lasted 18 Months
Heads clogged up. Tried the cleaning cycle several times and new expensive ink cartridges. Didn't work. Called Epson, Tech support on the phone after warranty expires is $9.95. Sent them an e-mail explaining the problem and what I had done .... their reply >>> 'try the cleaning cycle and/or new ink cartridges'! That's it Epson, I'm going with a HP laserjet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in Wozinaks!
Apple makes fantastic products - in my opinion, Macs are the best personal computers a person can own - but they are computers. The hard drive has moving parts and there are tens of thousands of connections on the circuitboards inside such a small place. Things can go wrong, but you can't go wrong with the AppleCare Protection Plan. The plan extends your complimentary phone support from 90 days to 3 years. This means you can call them every day (if you needed to, which is doubtful) for 3 years via one toll-free number - not just with hardware questions, but also for help with the Operating System and the i-Apps such as iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD and GarageBand.

I have used AppleCare more than once and their support just can't be beat. You don't get sent to some clueless person who's never seen a Mac and barely has command of English - you get real Apple Certified Technicians who are very nice and never lose patience with you. I have never been disappointed by their assistance.

As an iBook user, you can take your iBook to any authorized AppleCare Technician anywhere in the world to get it repaired. If you're travelling to Paris, just swing by the Apple Store there and they will fix it there, even though you bought the machine in the US. If you don't get the AppleCare Protection plan, even during the 1 yr window of "free" protection, you'd have to ship the unit back to the US and have a friend or family member take it in for you.

The APP comes with a copy of Tech Tools Deluxe, a great diagnostic and repair tool for common problems. The APP provides peace of mind and is the best investment you can make for your new iBook purchase. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary accessory to your OS X Mac
If you run OS X on your Mac, .Mac is recommended to enhance the functionality of your machine. In order to use Apple's Backup and iSync utilities you need a subscription to .Mac. The .Mac mail service is not as user friendly or powerful as other services such as Yahoo mail, but the Apple Mail program makes it easy to get your .Mac mail. The value of the free games that you get throughout the year is negligible, but if Apple continues to add features and software available through .Mac it will be hard to make a case against subscribing.

4-0 out of 5 stars .Mac is Fantastic!
Apple's suite of online tools is an incredible way to extend your digital hub, and as Apple keeps adding features and services, the value keeps going up!

Check it out, then buy a .Mac subscription! You won't be disappointed!

1-0 out of 5 stars It Might Work for Newbies and the Ignorant

1-0 out of 5 stars Painfully slow
I installed it on my 12" powerbook (G4 867 w/640m) running panther.Installation was slow but painless.I bought it because I needed to access my company's site which uses Citrix for webmail & MS office apps.Citrix doesn't work on the Mac browser, ie or safari.Well, it doesn't work in Virtual PC either.I tried to allocate more memory, close all other Mac apps, started VPC from a clean boot-up & nothing. It would time-out, applets wouldn't start... all from just trying to run through ie.I'm disappointed.BTW, under "System" in the control panal in VPC/WinXP, I was runing a 686 540m processor. It seemed more like a 386 runing at 100mh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too slow
Although I don't have the most current Macintosh, I do have a dual processor 500 mhz G4.I found that VPC ran far too slow to make it useful.I removed the software from my computer and purchased a laptop windows pc which worked very well.I would use caution in buying this product if you are expecting it to work quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you wish for!
My Windows laptop is going on the blink--has trouble powering up.I figured, it was time to get a new computer.I decided to go Mac and bought a new OS X mac.I also bought this software as there are a couple of Windows programs that I need to run which do not have a Mac version. After about 10 tries, I was finally able to install the software. But when I tried to install applications (via Control Panel --> Add programs), all I got was a busy hour glass then cursor..no program install. When I tried to view the Win XP tutorial, my computer froze and I had to turn off the power switch of my Mac.I then uninstalled the Virtual PC 6 software. It would have been much better to have just used the money for this program for a used PC for the programs I still need to run.Not worth the time and aggravation.Be careful what you wish for. ...
