Early Adopters Pick: January 2003. The first high-speed wireless networking router to use the 802.11g standard, which is four times faster than the current standard (802.11b) and backwards compatible.

The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, andmultiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

    access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT...
I have an RCA cable modem with RCN as my ISP.A great service which I highly recommend. I recently bought the Linksys G-Router after getting my hp laptop needing to setup wireless at home.I got it to work with no problem but then I experienced bandwidth loss and constant connectivity issues.I wrongly thought that it was the router.Fool that I was! After countless attempts at recycling the modem and WPA keys etc., I finally figured out that the modem could not support the wireless router and it had a short, plus RCA no longer carried it and the thing was ugly, taking up space.I've since gotten the Linksys Modem (BEFCMU10) and stacked it with the WRT54G router and it works fantastic!!!Be sure to call your ISP with the modem's MAC address to get online.YOU WON'T get connected otherwise. My ISP had me up and running within 5 minutes. Also some ISP's give you a discount if you supply your own modem.Check it out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't
It sounds like some customers have had really good Linksys router experiences.I haven't.So I have come to conclude that sometimes these routers work great, sometimes they completely fail.I've spent hours dealing with Linksys' customer support and my ISP trying to get my router to work.My iBook AirPort and Windows 2000 /USB wireless adapter both found the router easily. But the router was not able to hook up with my ISP.Both computers get a good wired static IP connection to the internet.I tried using Linkksys' customer support by phone, email, web and chat and kept getting advice that did not work and www.linksys.com pages that didn't work.A software engineer, I'm reasonably tech-savvy so I usually have success with half-decent tech support. They never once suggested that their router might be malfunctioning. One of my ISP's support representatives said that he's had a run of some 40 calls from Linksys customers with this kind of problem.Apparently I got one of these duds.

I'd say Linksys has big problems with quality control and customer support. With many good alternatives out there I don't think it's worth rolling the dice with Linksys.I gave it two stars, rather than one, because it sounds like the good ones work really great and I imagine the duds a in the minority. For what it's worth, the guy from my ISP said he's had good experiences with NetGear routers.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY easy to install, VERY easy to use!!!
Hi, I'm very happy with this Linksys Router. It took me only 10 seconds to surf in the web. Believe it or not!!!. I just plug in the Ethernet cable from my DSL Modem into the Router conection. I turn on my Gateway Laptop and....surprise!!! I was already conected to the web!!!.
No configuration needed, no CD running, no nothing!!!
Great product, great Plug and Play from Windows XP. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If good things come in small packages, the WUSB11 from Linksys makes a great addition to a wireless network. Measuring about the size of a deck of cards and weighing just shy of 3 ounces, this little device fits nearly anywhere and is easily stowed in a notebook computer case. Simple USB connectivity makes it compatible with any modern PC, and also makes it easy to swap from one computer to another.

Provided you already have a wireless router or Internet gateway set up, installing the WUSB11 is a snap. We plugged it into a USB port on a test PC, executed the installation program on the included PC, and once the system rebooted we were connected to the network without being tethered to any wires. The unit draws its power directly from the USB port, leaving users with one less cord to lug around and one less device to plug into a wall outlet. We tested the device on a PC located 40 feet laterally and one floor above the wireless router and didn't even need to extend the tiny antenna to get good reception. Should you need to use the antenna, it extends at either 90 degrees or 180 degrees, meaning it will work whether the unit is sitting flat on a desk or mounted vertically on a wall using the included Velcro strips.

Performance was impressive. As an 802.11b product the WUSB11 supports a maximum speed of 11 Mbps and real-world speeds hovered around that mark in our tests. The signal was strong and consistent, making it great for gaming or transferring large files without worrying about a disconnect halfway through. There are only two indicator lights on the unit itself that tell you it's working--a power light and another light that blinks when data is transmitting--but the included software tools allow for a much more detailed picture. Using these utilities we were able to keep an eye on the signal strength (it never dipped below 95 percent), configure the built-in encryption settings, and perform other security and monitoring tasks.

The device is designed to fall back to lower speeds instead of cutting off trans missions completely when it reaches the limits of its range or experiences signal problems. In a normal-size home you should have no trouble maintaining the 11 Mbps signal, but if you wander outdoors with a notebook or are plagued by signal interference, overall transmission speed can step down to 5.5 Mbps, 2 Mbps, or even 1 Mbps depending on conditions. Even at the lowest speed the device is fast enough for speedy Internet browsing (most users won't see any slowdown at all in that area, even for downloads), although transferring files across the network is painfully slow at the lower speeds.

No matter what, if you plan mainly to transfer large files over your network, you'll probably want the extra speed 802.11a or 802.11g devices offer. Of course, you'll also have to absorb the extra cost associated with those products. The WUSB11 is a fantastic 802.11b device for the money, working perfectly straight out of the box, and its low weight and small size make it a viable alternative to a PCMCIA wireless network card for notebook users. Just make sure the computer you want to connect it to doesn't use Windows 95 or NT, because the unit is incompatible with those two operating systems. --T. Byrl Baker

    Pros:

    • Simple installation and configuration
    • Mounts either horizontally or vertically
    • Included software provides useful details without overwhelming users with mi nutia
    Cons:
    • So light that the weight of the USB cord can pull it off a desk
    • Maximum 11 Mbps transmission speed may be too slow for some users

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work With Tivo
Just wanted to inform everyone that this product doesn't work with Tivo for a broadband connection.Use the NetGear WG111.It works great.Just wanted to prevent someone else from buying a product that isn't compatable with TIVO.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a good product..........but
I ordered the WUSB11 to connect a TIVO system to my internet.I was sent version 4 of the WUSB11, which isn't compatible with any TIVO service number. How about telling us what version of these products you're selling?

The Linksys Wireless-B router is a handy little device who's time has in many ways passed.

In terms of setup and software it is a cinch, run the software and plug it in and presto it found my wireless network and had me surfing in no time, much to the delight of my wife who didn't want more wires running through the house.

The downside of this device is security. The only security available currently on this device is WEP which although was good at the time of the initial release of the device doesn't cut it today.Linksys has not offered a firmware upgrade to allow WPA-PSK and from two conversations I've had with them doesn't seem to have plans to do so.

This means your system will be hackable by even the sloppiest hacker. You would be much better off going with a later model that includes native or upgradable WPA-PSK support.

Of course if you don't mind people hacking your system then this will certainly do the job.If you are doing any kind of home business or keeping financial records on the PC I'd give it a miss. ... Read more

Early Adopters Pick, January 2003. The first high-speed wireless networking PC card for laptops to use the 802.11g standard, which is four times faster than the current standard (802.11b) and backwards compatible.

The new Wireless-G notebook adapter (PC Card adapter) from Linksys has both the 802.11b and newer 802.11g standards built in, so you can connect your notebook to existing 802.11b infrastructure and also the new, fast Wireless-G networks. The included setup wizard walks you through configuring the adapter to your network's settings, step by step. Then just slide the adapter into your notebook's PC Card slot and enjoy network access with your notebook computer, while retaining true mobility.

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products that are found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. Once you're connected, you can keep in touch with your e-mail, access the Internet, and share files and other resources such as printers and network storage with other computers on the network, wherever you wander. At home, you can surf the Web or use instant messaging to chat with friends while sitting out on the patio.

You'll also be able to connect to any of the growing number of public wireless hotspots springing up in coffee shops, airport lounges, hotels, and convention centers. And as those hotspots upgrade to the new high-speed Wireless-G standard, you'll be ready to take advantage of the increased speeds.

Get connected to current standard 802.11b networks today, and be prepared for the future with the Wireless-G notebook adapter from Linksys.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I have always purchased Linksys in the past, routers, switches & hubs with absolutly no trouble. I read all the reviews here, some good, some bad. I took the advice of some who said not to use the setup CD and to download straight from the web. Another said to setup the router and not let your "know it all" 19 year old set up the laptop adapter first, among many others. Well, I set up the wireless router WRT54GS but could not get a clean install of the software drivers not even from the web. Finally I got it to install and work. It worked fine as a router with a Ethernet (wired) connection to my laptop. Then the fun started when I tried to install the Laptop Adapter WPC54G. I can't begin to explain the hours and pain that was spent. No matter what I did or how I did it, the adapter was active and appeared to be ok BUT it would not communicate withe Router. I tried every configuration I could. And, Yes, I called Linksys. Even at 3AM they are there to help you .... RIGHT! I called them 3 times, was on the phone for almost an hour each time and GOT NO WHERE. It might have been faster if the people spoke english as a first language!. Bottom line, Linksys said there must be something wrong with either the adapter or router, or both and left me hanging. THANKS. I bought both pieces back to the store and returned them. Would have liked to exchanged them for another Linksys set but, the experience was very very BAD. I purchased the D-Link DI-624 108Mbps G Wireless router and the D-Link DWL-G650 108G Laptop adapter. In 20 minutes I was up and Running. Lesson Learned? ... If you buy Linksys or anyone else, and it does work out of the box (if you followed instructions), consider it dead and don't waste anymore of your time trying and trying to make it work!

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong Connection and good range.
This wireless network adapter is durable and provides a great connection with relatively little configuration.I have installed this card in IBM T30 and A20 models as well as HP notebooks. I had a dlink card on my last computer that had less than half the range it claimed. The instalation was simple and intuitive enough for the technologicaly challenged could get wifi connection easily.I have yet to find an incompatible network.

This card isnt the cheapest (but its not the most expensive) but the price is worth the durability and knowledge that you are connected with a quality product.
Go wireless with the WPC54G today.

    1-0 out of 5 stars WPC54G v2 & AES
After purchasing the WPC54G v2, I was disappointed to notice that it evidently doesn't support AES. I'm using the Linksys Network Monitor v2.1 (also tried Funk Odyssey), and driver v6.0.0.18.
Linksys' website has the product data sheet for this card, which lists security as: WEP, AES, TKIP, 802.1x. The user guide, that came with the card, as well as the user guide posted to the website, speaks about AES as a selection. And the Network Monitor application, prompts you to choose, "from either TKIP or AES," only that AES is not listed in the drop down list.
From my reading posts, it appears that v2 doesn't support AES, while some other WPC54G versions do. The problem is that Linksys makes it very unlikely that you'll realize this before purchasing the card. Between their website, userguide, software, as well as all their retail channel partners listing AES as a supported protocol, you're destined to purchase the card and be disappointed once you attempt to configure AES.
After contacting Linksys, this is the clarification I received, "...AES is supported with the previous version which is WPC54G Version 1. There is no driver yet for the version 2 wireless-g adapter that supports AES as on the moment. Keep posted from the website for any updates with regards to the device. You can go to www.linksys.com..."
This doesn't really manage expectations, though, and leaves it likely that others may potentially experience the same confusion. ... Read more

This card works solidly if you use the linksys software to manage the card... 3 weeks so far and it hasn't dropped me once. I tried using the windows wireless zero service to manage the card and it dropped connection every few minutes... just disable wireless zero and go for the linksys software. Also I'm running 128 bit WEP and no problems... I've heard WPA has problems... simple... don't run WPA... throughput hasn't been as advertised, but that doesn't bother me too much... I'm used to not getting what is advertised.

Given some of the earlier reviews, I was somewhat apprehensive about buying this PCI adapter, especially since I have a dinosaur of a computer that runs Windows 98 SE.I am so glad I made this purchase! It was very easy to set up with my router (Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband), and the Internet connection works far faster than it ever did wired.

The versatile wireless Ethernet bridge from Linksys can make any wired Ethernet-equipped device a part of your wireless network. At home, use the wireless Ethernet bridge to connect game consoles, set-top boxes, or computers to your wireless network to share your high-speed network connection. In the office, convert your Ethernet-wired printer, scanner, camera, notebook, or desktop into a wireless networked device.

It's completely driver-free, so it works on any platform and with any operating system. Because there are no drivers to load, setup is a snap--just plug it into your device and configure the network settings through your Web browser.

You can also use the Linksys wireless Ethernet bridge as a kind of "cableless cable" to connect remote areas together. Maybe the Shipping department is all the way across the warehouse from Receiving. Or maybe you want to set up a home office in your detached garage. With a wireless Ethernet bridge in the garage and an other one (or a wireless access point) in the house, you're connected--without the hassle of cabling.

I could control it from an ethernet cable, ping it, should work! I already have a wireless G bridge that works quite well, but this one... Looks like you have 50/50 odds for it to work, when yo uknow that the latest firmware release was in 2003, it's a shame for Linksys quality procedures...

Plus it's still pricey for a wireless B, I'm disappointed with Linksys...

1-0 out of 5 stars LINKSYS IS JUNK!
If your looking for a device to bridge with, as I once did in this device, head on over to Belkin's F5D7330 Wireless Ethernet Adapter and read my review. Belkin's equipment is so much more reliable, it does what you ask it to and doesn't flinch like inferior DLINK and LINKSYS products.

This LINKSYS device is straight GARBAGE!

    Editorial Review

Enjoy true-to-life photo quality with the HP PhotoSmart 7350 color inkjet printer. Get up to 4,800 x 1,200 optimized color dpi when using premium photo papers and 1,200 x 1,200 input dpi from a computer, or print directly from digital camera memory cards. From either source, you'll see beautiful photos, thanks to HP's six-ink color system and PhotoRet IV resolution enhancement and color layering technologies.

Print 10 pages per minute in black, 11 pages per minute in color. Print fast, laser-quality black text at 17 ppm with an optional HP 56 black inkjet print cartridge. Print directly from your digital camera memory cards using convenient card slots--without using a computer. Or, simply connect your HP digital camera with direct-printing capability to the front USB port, then print your photos (also without using a computer).

Should you want to, you can easily save photos to your PC and print borderless photos using the 4-by-6-inch photo paper tray and HP premium plus photo paper. Photos from the 7350 resist fading twice as long as most traditionally processed photos, up to 65 years (requires premium photo plus paper and six-ink color printing with the included HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge).

Other features include a save-to-PC button, HP Memories disc-creator software, auto paper-type sensing, an ink backup printing mode (which completes the print job if the cartridge runs out), a convenient 20-sheet 4-by-6-inch photo tray, and a 100-sheet, 8.5-by-11-inch paper tray. An optional two-sided printing accessory (C8955A#A2L) is supported.

1-0 out of 5 stars HP Photosmart 7350
I bought the 7350 less than 2 years ago and paid almost $200.00 for it. It sounds like a thrashing machine, clunks and jerks, and now it only prints occasionally. I'm taking it to the Goodwill store today; maybe someone else can get it to perform since I sure can't. I'm tired of trying.

The problem I have is the faces being rather fuzzy. Have tried everything to correct it , have not figured out how or if it can be done.
Its very easy to use, if only I could get clearer pictures! ... Read more

Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo 128 MB MP3 Player
Average Customer Review: 2.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics (15 November, 2002)

    Editorial Review

Combining a high-quality 128 MB MP3 player with a compact USB hard drive, Creative Labs has created MuVo, a logical step in hybrid portable devices.

MuVo is compact (about the size of a cigarette lighter) and lightweight, and it stores images, Web pages, and other documents, in addition to your MP3 files.

Installation is a breeze. Simply plug the MuVo into a spare USB port and your PC recognizes it as a mass storage device. No drivers are needed, although the unit does ship with some drivers and a special formatting tool. Transferring files to the unit is as easy as the installation: Just drag and drop files into the player and you're set to go. Once you've transferred data or MP3 files, remove the MuVo from your computer and slide it onto the battery pack. One AAA battery will net you up to 12 hours of power.

One problem we found was that because the unit doesn't ship with a cradle or USB port extension cable, we had to go around to the back of our computer every time we wanted to insert or remove the device. This isn't a problem if you have a USB hub or are using the MuVo on a laptop.

Although slightly more expensive than a mass storage device of comparable size, the MuVo is ideal for those wanting a compact, versatile MP3 player. --Martin Snelling, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Nice To Have
This has been working great for me. The headphones aren't the best so it sounds a whole lot better with good ones. Once the USB stick has been formatted on a Windows machine, files (audio or other) are easily transferred using a Mac in OSX. Having the removable USB stick to transfer files between computers is a huge bonus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awww...c'mon...alive and still kicking
    I received this device as a Christmas present last year.It was my first and I didn't have a clue about MP3.I have not had a problem with this device at all.<br /> <br /> Things I liked:<br /> <br /> Easy to understand.I downloaded through Window Media-never an issue.<br /> <br /> Small and durable.I have dropped this device a million times.<br /> <br /> Great sound-----if you use other headphones than provided.<br /> <br /> Only took a AA battery.<br /> <br /> Things I wished would happen: <br /> <br /> better headphones<br /> a display<br /> ability to change the order of songs in transfer<br /> <br /> Otherwise, I have had no issues. I will be purchasing this item for my 14 year old daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get it working again!
True, this little guy freezes from time to time when you forget to dismount it properly (NOT creatives fault!). It's pretty easy to reformat if you people who say it's 'broken' used LINUX and not windows! Simple as that guys - no need to bother with with wasting your money on repair costs. Unbelievable.
