    GameCube Jet Black Wave Pack

    Video Game
    list price: $399.99

    Editorial Review

To help you start your GameCube collection, we've created this special bundle, which includes the adventure game Luigi's Mansion, the sports game Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, a space-combat game. This value pack also comes with an additional controller so you can challenge a friend, a memory card to save your progress through the games, and a six-month trial subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine to help you keep track of all the latest games.

Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others.

For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files. The company has concentrated its efforts on games. The prelaunch titles we've seen play uniformly smooth, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional "bottlenecks" that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down, hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum.

The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based media rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas (Pikmin, anyone?). While most other systems likewise have their games stored on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as it is to deter would-be software pirates.

Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers--Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can only play Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars.

The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games--it's even got a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming.

In short, the GameCube isn't an all-in-one entertainment system, and neither is it the most powerful of the modern video game consoles. But for video game enthusiasts who want to stick with their favorite characters, its value cannot be beat. --Porter B. Hall

1-0 out of 5 stars Gamecube, the toaster of the 14th century.
Don't listen to people that have played PS2 and X-box but only own a NGC. I own all 3, so listen to me!
NGC can't play CDs or DVDs.
And why in hell are they trying to compete with babyish crap like Super Mario Sunshine against Jak 2 or WWE Wrestlemania XIX against WWE Smackdown Here comes the Pain.
If your wondering why I bought one, well lets just say Nintendo's a bit biased towards their games.
The only DECENT games are rarely made like : Legend of Zelda the wind waker and Metroid Prime but if gamecube wanna actually compete they better hire RARE, Naughty Dog, Insomniac and maybe the companies that make games like GTA.
Get a PS2 if you ask me.
    Beleive me I'm reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it!
The Gamecube has excellent graphics, games, speed, the reliability and more.

The graphics are great. Xbox may have the capability, but it's hard to make it right. It is a constant 162-bit look, GC is. PS2 is behind Xbox on this one. 250 bits for Xbox, 128 for PS2.

Games come next. Nintendo has in-house games like Mario Kart, Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, The Legend of Zelda (1 magazine gave it best of E3, it actually looks good), Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, Star Fox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing, and Mario Party 4. 3rd party games are great. On Sega's list, there is Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Mega Collection, Phantasy Star Online Version I & II, Skies of Arcadia Legends, F-Zero, Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Virtua Fighter Quest, Virtua Striker 3, Soccer Slam, NBA 2K2 and 2K3, NFL & NHL 2K3 and NCAA Basketball & College Football 2K3. Namco offers 2 new RPG's, Soul Calibur 2, a new Star Fox shooter, Ridge Racer V, Tales of Destiny IV, Pac-Man games, and Dead to Rights. Capcom gives the whole RE series to GC (RE, 0, 2, 3, Code: Veronica, and 4). Don't forget Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO! LucasArts gives Star Wars games (1 exclusive). EA gives Madden, NBA Live, NHL, Tiger Woods, and others. Acclaim gives it's line of sports and games, as well as Midway and Activision. Square Soft is giving a Final Fantasy game or 2.

There are great 1st party controllers, and accessories.

Buy at least a PS2, but your best bet is GC!

5-0 out of 5 stars GameCube is awesome!
GameCube is probably the best "family" game system you can buy.The GC's price is well under the price for an Xbox and there's just a huge range of interests and tastes reflected in their current lineup of games.Older teens and adults will like the sport games, younger kids will love games like Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin. My only complaint is that the peripherals [are less] than the PS or PS2.BUT--the graphics on this thing are AMAZING and load times are almost nothing! ... Get maximum sports action with this special PlayStation2 game pack, which includes the new PlayStation2 console (with controller), a bonus Dual Shock 2 controller, a PS2 vertical stand, and three games (Madden NFL 2001, SSX: Snowboard Supercross, and NBA Live 2001). At the heart of the PlayStation2 is the 128-bit Emotion Engine processor, which brings lightning-fast gameplay and unprecedented graphics power to your TV screen. We've packed in three AAA sports titles to get things started.

EA Sports's Madden NFL 2001 fully utilizes the PlayStation2's advanced hardware with ultrarealistic rushing, passing, blocking, and tackling. You can play the built-in AFC and NFC lineups, or even create your own player. The graphics power of the PlayStation2 brings a new level of detail to the game. As play progresses, you'll see the field start to collect scars from some of the rougher tackles, and the players will show some wear of their own, too.

If you can pull yourself away from the football game, there's also SSX: Snowboard Supercross. Game critics are raving about this fast-action winter title, which includes unconventional racing environments and a wide variety of boarders.

NBA Live 2001 adds quite a few new touches to the long-running basketball franchise, including coaches who lose their cool at bad calls and player moves such as turnaround jumpers, drop steps, up-and-under moves, and monster dunks. It also includes some classic teams, such as the '72 Lakers or '86 Celtics, each with its full complement of players from its winning season right down to likenesses and uniforms.

To help you go head-to-head with your opponents, this bundle also includes a bonus Dual Shock 2 controller. Also, we've included the official PS2 vertical stand, which turns your machine into a tower of sleek gaming power.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xbox Vs. PS2 (a fair review)
I agree the Xbox does have better graphics, (if not currently, then it will in the future) but if you're looking at the Xbox as a system keep in mind the number of games that are available. No where near the games that are out there for PS2.Plus you get backwards compatability with PS1 games. Also Microsoft is considering pulling the XBox out of japan, which roughly translates into the Xbox going down the drain. If you know anything about the gaming industry is that it all starts over there.
For Longevity in the sence of the hardware that is in the console, then choose Xbox becuase it is definately more advanced than PS2
For Longevity in the sense of constant new and creative developments then stick with the PS2.It will be around a long time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Xbox is better
Your all stupid if you think that the PS2 is anywhere near as powerful as the Xbox. in fact Xbox has MORE THAN twice the power of the weak little ps2, and if your buying ps2 cause of the games, WAIT about 2 months and you can that game with extra stuff AND MUCH BETTER GRAPHICS

Indigo Game Boy Advance Mario Action Game Pack

    Editorial Review

To help you start your Game Boy Advance collection, we've created this special bundle, which includes the games Super Mario Advance and Iridion 3D, along with selected accessories. The space shooter Iridion 3D pushes the Game Boy Advance hardware to new levels of near-3-D graphics and lustrous color. In Super Mario Advance, players take the swashbuckling plumber and his compatriots Luigi, Peach, and Toad on a nostalgic side-scrolling adventure through a richly colored fantasyland. We've also included a PowerPak to help you save on batteries, a Worm Light Advance to help you play through low-light situations, and a Game Boy holster so you can keep your machine at the ready.

Please note that accessory colors may vary from illustration above. No substitutions allowed.

The Game Boy platform (which includes the original unit, the Game Boy Pocket, and the Game Boy Color) came to market when most video game consoles had a life expectancy of just a few years. More than a decade later, the system is still going strong. How did the Game Boy successfully compete--and in some cases bury--an onslaught of faster, more powerful handheld and home console systems? Let us count the ways: affordability; a huge library of games that consistently made the most of the hardware's limitations; smart power management that extended battery life; and uncluttered controls. But perhaps it was the system's ultra-portable design that allowed devotees to play video games around their schedules, thus making it a must-have system for kids and adults alike.

Now the Game Boy Advance (or GBA, as it's already being called) comes to us with power that would have been unthinkable back in the day. The portable's 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen, and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying beeps and boops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitized stereo sound. The extra processing muscle also means you can even network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun off of one shared cartridge. Only two Game Boy Color units could link together, and each unit required a copy of the game.

What's not being replaced, however, is the wide selection of Game Boy games. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play its own line of colorful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Army Men Advance, High Heat Major League Baseball 2002, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2--as well as all of the monochrome and color games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems (nearly 500 in total). Players can view the older games in their smaller, originally square dimensions, or, with the touch of the shoulder button, expand the game to fit the GBA's larger screen. We tried enlarging the screen on a Game Boy Color edition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and found that Mr. Hawk was much easier to see.

When you first pick up the system, you'll be amazed how lightweight it is. At fewer than 5 ounces and a little larger than a deck of playing cards, the system easily fits into a shirt pocket without any sag. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands. The former design too often pushed the left and right thumb knuckles together during gameplay. The new layout should be comfortable for all ages, and the center screen orientation makes it easy to see.

Game Boy Color owners will find the GBA's larger screen somewhat darker than they're used to, but that's because the screen is outfitted with antiglare technology. Like the old Game Boy Color, the color LCD is not backlit, so you need pretty good light to play by. Unlike that system, though, you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the hot-spot reflection of the light bulb in your screen.

But you'll also notice the graphics. Sporting what's basically a redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to throwing a touchdown pass to crawling through a dungeon.

Some might argue that Nintendo could have tried to put even more power into this Game Boy Advance. After all, the 32-bit video game had its heyday more than five years ago. Perhaps, but after handling this new handheld, we're inclined to think that Nintendo wisely struck a balance between size, price, and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, we think the Game Boy Advance is here to stay, and we're glad. --Porter B. Hall

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper to get a GBA with one of the Classic or F-zero Packs
If you could hold off of buying a $... deal, then listen. The GBA packs that cost a ... dollars include the same power packs, wormlights, and holsters, but they cost ... dollars LESS because they have one less game. If you would just buy one of these little packs, then all you would have to do is just have to do is go to a walmart or gameco near you and buy another game there. the games there should cost about $... dollars there, so you end up saving ... bucks. Plus, that's how you could get F-zero or a Classic and still get another game of your choice, like RAYMAN. As for the GBA, it's awesome. It has a wider screen, and if you make use of the wormlight, then you're all ready to go and play twenty four hours a day. If you're used to a gameboy, then you will definitely be thrilled by the wormlight, but if you haven't used a gameboy before, then you probably will not like the wormlight accesory as much. Either way, the actual GBA is incredible. I have played it, and it packs a major punch with a 32 bit processor and even upwards of 32000 colors, many more than the original GB Color. I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT AFTER THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE IS UNVEILED, THE NINTENDO COMPANY WILL ONLY BE SPENDING EFFORT ON THE GB ADVANCE (specifically, fifteen percent on GBA, fifteen on N64, and 70% on the upcoming gamecube, WHICH THIS WILL PLUG INTO LIKE A CONTROLLER).

5-0 out of 5 stars GBA - The Best Portable System EVER!!!
Ok, now I would just like to again say that GBA is the single best portable system on the market today. Let's take a look at a few facts about the GBA.

1.It is a 32-bit system, while GBC was an 8-bit system.

    2. It has better sound and a crisper color screen resolution

    3. It has 32,000+ different colors, in which 511 of those can be displayed at one time.

    4. The addition of 2 new buttons adds for better control.

    5. Comfortable grip with the new wide layout, instead of the GBC and traditional Gameboy's tall layout.

    6. Battery power lasts 15 hours without accessories like lights attached.

    7. It has a wider screen for sidescrolling games. For the old games that can't be seen well like that, you can hit a button and it is back to normal.

    8. (And I think this is the best about it) It can play ALL the previos games for GBC and original Gameboy, more than 500 games in all!

That's not all this gameing system has that is better than GBC, but I'll stop here. But as some other people said it is closely compared to SNES, if not a Playsation, and with the additional features it will be a great gift for any person, ages 5 and up preferably. With all the new games coming out for it, like Super Mario Advanced and Iridion 3D, it will be an awsome system to own for days you have to go on a long trip somewhere, the power is out, or just want to play GBA for no specific reason at all except for fun, the GBA is going to bring a rise to portable gaming and give the almighty systems like N64 and Playstation an opponent of smaller porportions.

Gameboy Advanced is here, lady's and gentlemen, the next generation of the portable gaming experience, and it is here to stay...

5-0 out of 5 stars Those who have Neo Geo, get a GBA, trust me on this.
All right. Person who put 1 star, this is for you. I'm not here to insult you, but use that peanut brain of yours for a minute. You like handheld games I bet, and so do I. I have a Neo Geo and I am still getting a GBA to add to my portable arsenile. Why? Because Neo Geo failed and I will bet everything that GBA will exceed. This is to all of you. Why have a failed system with fewer that 15 games and have a system that has more than 500 games. Use your logic here. Neo Geo is not worth having if it stinks. Just give GBA a try, you will be surprised. This is the best handheld out there so I recommend getting it, ok. ... Read more

Sony DCRVX2000 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5" LCD, Memory Stick & BuiltIn Digital Still Mode
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $3,199.99

    Editorial Review

The near professional-level Sony DCR-VX2000 digital video camcorder uses three progressive scan CCDs (one for each primary color) to capture quality images and can record in the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio common to movies. A 12x optical zoom and 48x digital zoom bring images closer, while the Sony SteadyShot optical image stabilization smoothes out hand-induced shakiness.

Like most digital camcorders, the DCR-VX2000 is equipped with an IEEE 1394 connection (also known as i.Link and Fire Wire) for digital image transfer, allowing video editing on a properly equipped home computer. Also included is an S-Video input, encouraging the conversion of already existing footage into the DV format.

The DCR-VX2000 also doubles as a digital still camera, recording photos onto an included Memory Stick at a resolution of 640 x 480. This resolution is fine for images you're e-mailing or viewing on a monitor, but most dedicated digital cameras today offer far more detail. The package includes PictureGear Lite 4.1 software for Windows, which lets you transfer stills to your computer and manipulate and catalog them once they're there.

The camera includes a number of manually adjustable settings for ultimate flexibility, including manual zoom, focus, shutter speed, and exposure. Microphone record level can also be adjusted for optimum sound quality. The Memory Mix feature works by superimposing a digital still stored on a Memory Stick over the video being recorded. A color-bar generator produces standard NTSC color bars to calibrate monitors, and four different white-balance settings help optimize color. The DCR-VX2000 includes a mic input, as well as an intelligent shoe for select Sony accessories, and has several digital effects built-in. Also included are a 4 MB Memory stick and reader, AC adapter, lithium ion battery, AV cable, remote, and lens cap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous video
I was an absolute novice when I was introduced to this camcorder at my job as Tech Teacher in a K-8 school. The last time I had filmed anything was with a super 8mm recorder back in the 70's!

You know what I hear from my colleagues and parents? "Wow, those are great videos!" ""The quality is amazing." "I wish I could have my videos turn out like yours."

Trust me, folks. It's not me. It's this camcorder. The quality of the image, the steadycam compensation for the less than steady hand, the prompts to turn on a light filter in glaring outdoor lighting environments, and the richness and depth of color, even (and especially) under low light conditions is nothing short of beautiful.

I imagine that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what this camcorder can do. With my use of digital editing software, I probably won't use many of the camcorders built-in editing features like titling and fades/dissolves. I am resolved to try out it's time-lapse feature soon, however.

The transfer to/from a computer via firewire is effortless with common video editing programs like Pinnacle Studio or Adobe Premiere. Having a second hard disk devoted solely to video editing and storage is recommended.

The built-in mic is more than adequate for most situations, and the Intelligent Accessory Shoe allows other mics to be used. Be aware, though, that because this unit is "old" by the blurred time standard of modern technology, some newer Sony mics aren't compatible with this cams Intelligent Accessory Shoe.

This camcorder is not mini or lightweight. It may not be for you if you want to travel lightly. I learned the hard way when I filmed about 40 mins of a basketball game without a tripod. I could barely use my arm the following day! Buy a tripod already!

With that in mind, if you really want rich memories preserved during that 3 candle birthday party, or just about any ligting situation, you must have this camcorder.

3-0 out of 5 stars I like other Cameras Better
I know this camera is a favorite of most people out there, but I have used this camera and was not super impressed. It is a pretty damn good camera, don't get me wrong, and for the price, it is very competitive. Price aside, I would recommend either the Canon XL1 or the Panasonic DVX-100 over this camera. I have been on set with all three cameras many times and have found that the DVX has produced the most pleasing results and has the most amount of useful features for true cinematography.

On the up side, this is the camera that has been used for some movies released that are a little lower budget. This camera has been around long enough now that it is beginning to become noticeably outdated, so unless the price is right, try something else.

Canon EOS D30 3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $3,499.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

The Canon EOS D30 is one of the few available interchangeable-lens digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras. It's designed to offer the performance and picture quality of a film-based SLR with the convenience and features of a digital camera. Based on Canon's EOS line of film cameras, the D30 is compatible with all EOS-related equipment, including EF lenses and EX-series Speedlite flashes. This model is targeted at "prosumers" (serious consumers and some professionals), and its EOS compatibility makes it a natural choice for people who already own Canon equipment.

If you're accustomed to using a Canon SLR, the D30's features and controls will be familiar. As with film models, the shutter speed, aperture, and focus can all be set manually or automatically. White balance can also be adjusted, either by selecting a preset value or by shooting and storing a reference image. Unlike most digital cameras, the traditional optical viewfinder is the only way to frame your shots; the 1.8-inch LCD monitor on the back of the camera is for perusing images and adjusting settings only. One bonus of this arrangement is that the D30 is always ready to take pictures; you don't have to worry about changing modes as you must on most digital cameras.

The introduction of the D30 also marks the first use of a CMOS sensor in a multimegapixel digital camera. Because CMOS sensors are less expensive, use less power, and are easier to manufacture than the traditional CCD sensors found on most cameras, there are high hopes that CMOS will be the primary sensor technology for the super-high resolution digital cameras of tomorrow. Until now, however, CMOS sensors have offered inferior results when compared to CCD, so they've been found primarily in entry-level and toy digital cameras. Canon seems to have solved the image-quality problem by custom designing the CMOS chip in the D30, and the company claims that their sensor offers better performance than most CCD sensors.

Images are stored on Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the IBM Microdrive. By default, files are recorded in JPEG format, though there are also settings for TIFF and RAW recording. TIFF is the most common lossless recording format, and TIFF images can be viewed and edited with virtually any photo editing software. TIFF files provide the highest-quality images, but at a price: a single D30 image occupies nearly 10 MB of memory. RAW, in contrast, is a newer format that's not recognized by as many photo-editing software packages, though Canon provides a plug-in to let Adobe Photoshop users directly import RAW files, and also includes software that lets you convert RAW files to TIFF files on your computer. Like TIFF, RAW is a lossless format, yet RAW files are only about one-third the size of TIFFs. Because the RAW image comes directly from the sensor and has received less in-camera processing than other file formats, it also offers experienced users more image-correction options.

A final note about the EOS D30. The CMOS sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative, which means that when you take a picture, the focal length of the lens you are using is greater. For example, if you took a picture using a lens with a 28mm focal length, the actual focal length would be 1.6x greater, or 45mm. If you're currently shooting with a Canon SLR, this makes your zoom lenses even more powerful, but it also means that you'll need to pick up a wide-angle lens or wide-angle converter to regain the range of focal lengths you have with film. --Michael Lewis and Shane Burnett

    Pros:

    • Compatible with all Canon EOS equipment.
    • Features RAW mode for ultimate photographic control.
    • SLR flexibility and control.

    Cons:

    • Expensive.
    • Focal length adjustment makes wide-angle shooting difficult.
    • More memory is the first accessory you'll need to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool!
This camera was the best investment in my photography that I could have imagined.Without the cost and concern of film and processing, I was free to make as many photos as I wanted, and to adjust the settings to learn about the effect of such control. With my EOS lenses, my existing investment was prolonged.I have printed and posted much of my work, and the quality has met or exceeded local labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Aspiring Intermediate Photographer
You need to take a lot of pictures to become a better photographer, and you need to learn from the pictures that you take. You get immediate feedback from this camera.I've owned mine now for over a year and I can see the vast improvement in my abilities. The biggest drawback is its slowness, and the second is that you have to multiply your lens by 1.6 to get the true focal length. But it takes all of the Canon lenses so I switch around between my film camera and this one.In all, I've been very happy with this camera and it has gone everywhere with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5000 pictures and I am still wanting another D-30 camera
I purchased a D-30 from Amazon last year and I previously had been using a Digital Nikon. The improvement was monumental in all aspects. I subsequently drowned my camera, and I am getting ready to repurchase another D30. They are not ready for water yet? I have taken approximately 5000 pictures and saved them all in the most usable format and I will continue to do the same. The Photoshop software that comes with the camera is very user friendly, I am sure there are many features yet to learn, but I have been extremely happy with what I have already used. I hesitate to say mastered. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great !!
It is a really spectacular telescope!!
After having spent about 20 minutes to achieve a precise collimation, the images are almost perfect.
The location of celestial objects is very good.
I recommend an ocular of 35 mm and a Ultima barlow.

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Can Afford The N8GPS Get It
I bought this scope as a gift for my Mom.She caught the backyard astronomy bug after looking through my Nexstar 11 GPS a few times.I wanted to get her a scope that was easy to use and fairly lightweight, but with more than a 5" appature so that she'd actually be able to see details on deep sky objects as opposed to blurs.

This scope delivers and is a great value for the money. However, it's goto accuracy - - while beating the competition at the same price point - - is not nearly as good as the accuracy of Celestron's higher end telescopes. There is a $500-1000 price difference between this scope and the N8GPS model, but I think the more expensive scope is actually a better value. This scope is really a terrific instrument, but if the extra money is not an issue I think most enthusiasts would be happier with the Nexstar 8 GPS (the one that looks like the N11GPS - with the carbon tube). It's got better gears, a sturdier mount, dual fork arms, and simply performs to perfection every time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great telescope, but get the new one instead.

Texas Instruments TI-92 Plus Graphing Calculator
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $250.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

With more power than most of us had in our PCs less than 20 years ago, the TI-92 Plus graphing calculator is the machine of choice for students and engineers both at the desk and on the go. It comes with over 500 KB of memory and software for working through algebra and other mathematic problems quickly and easily.

With the TI Graph Link accessory (not included), you can connect to computers and even download software upgrades. Solve linear and nonlinear equations, use the Pretty Print feature to see equations in textbook format, and work with 3-D surface graphs in real time. The QWERTY keyboard is rugged and easy to use, the 128 x 240 screen is easy on the eyes, and the calculator comes with a durable shell to protect its face when you're traveling or in the field. Additional accessories can turn the TI-92 into a mobile data-collection station, but it's just as useful at home.

Students beware: Some professors and teachers discourage, or even ban the use of calculators like the TI-92 in their classes, so make sure it's OK before you buy. Once you're set, the manual is clear and straightforward--you'll be programming in no time. Ultrageeks will love the assembly-language option, but the rest of us can get by just fine with the regular interface. The old timers might still cling to their slide rules, but anyone who needs a calculator for school or work can see why the Texas Instruments TI-92 is so popular: Its versatility, power, and portability give you the number-crunching power of a computer no matter where you are. --Rob Lightner

1-0 out of 5 stars NEEDS HIGH CONTRAST DISPLAY!!!
I'm sure the capabilities are wonderful. That's why I bought it. But, it was so difficult to use - because I couldn't see what was on the low contrast (even with adjustment) display - that it wouldn't have mattered if it had outclassed a Cray. I couldn't program it without getting a headache from eye strain. If it had a decent display, it would be great. Without reasonable input and output display, it is just a piece of junk!

4-0 out of 5 stars Make sure it is a Plus!
This is a great calculator, but because Amazon does not have a category for old ti-92's, people often sell these as PLUS models. The only major differences are things Linear Algebra, upgradable firmware, and extra memory. You will want the extra memory if you write custom programs. Before buying one of these, email the sellerand confirm it is a plus model, unless you dont care. Enjoy!

    Editorial Review

The innovative 52-inch Panasonic PT52DL10 DLP (Digital Light Processing) projection TV combines the Texas Instruments Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) with original Panasonic optical structuring. This HDTV-ready set also features a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP) capability, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, a 3D Y/C digital comb filter, and PC input (XGA compatible).

The DMD is an optical semiconductor chip that has approximately one million in-line microscopic mirrors, each representing one pixel. Responding to a digital signal, the mirrors change angles and can switch on and off, up to thousands of times per second, to produce a high-resolution 1280 x 720 image. Digital Light Processing technology also reduces the pixelation effects and digital artifacts to create a stable image without perceptible color bleed or misconvergence.

Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right.

This set has a built-in 181-channel tuner and two built-in speakers (10 watts apiece) that provide simulated surround sound. It's compatible with high-definition signals (1080i, 720p, 480i, and 480p) with an optional HDTV tuner. I bought Panasonic PT52DL on October 10, 2003. It worked fine for a while then all of sudden, on January 10, 2004,there was no picture. I called the company and they directed me to a local facility. They came and picked up the TV. First they told me the light bulb was out and it was backordered. After three weeks they got the light bulb and now they are telling me it is not the bulb, it is some other part that is still backordered. As of March 2, 2004 they have no idea when they will get my TV fixed. DO NOT BUY till Panasonic has fixed its problems with service.

5-0 out of 5 stars SONY SAVAD900 HOME THEATER SPEAKER SYSTEM
This system was ahead of its time and I wish Sony had decided to continue its production with desired improvements. Additional component hookups could be used along with other small refinements. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a good used system it will not disappoint you, in fact it will hammer out unbelievable picture & sound quality from both your DVD & CD collection supporting 5.1, Superbit & DTS. This system is by far one of the best I have ever had the pleasure to own. Some may balk at its size but in this case smaller is not always better making the small fry systems of today lacking in ability. Overlooking the size which is not that bulky but actually quite compact & stylish with a 5 disk changer AM/FM tuner incorporated in one of the speaker units and subwoofer in the other to include your center & satellite speakers & providing a host of decoding modes for both music and movies. I tested every one of them and they will make a difference depending on the disk encryptions and capabilities. Single button access allows you to easily find the best mode without having to run setup in the beginning prior to disk play of your music & movies. This is an excellent feature for those foreign disks recorded in English but written in Chinese or Japanese characters making your experience & collection all the more worthwhile. Sony really needs to consider raising the Phoenix of systems from the ashes and incorporate the latest technology into it. They would sell like Hotcakes*****

No complaints on the performance of the Sony SAVAD900 Home Theater System by Sony, which I believe is their top of the line DVD/CD surround system, EXCEPT that this model does NOT play CDRs!I made the mistake of checking the lower priced model which apparently does play cdrs, but was talked into getting this one by my girlfriend because of the relatively weak subwoofer on the lower models.I cannot believe that for $1,000.00 this thing cannot play cdrs. I think it is because on this model, the dvds/cd player is housed in the speaker, as opposed to the lower models wherein there is a separate unit.SO IF YOU INTEND TO PLAYS CDRS IN YOUR HOME THEATER SYSTEM BUY A LOWER MODEL OR GET A BOSE OR A PIONEER UNIT. ... The Panasonic PVDM2791 is a 27-inch hi-fi stereo TV with a built-in DVD player and VCR, offering the convenience of combined DVD/TV/VCR entertainment in one self-contained easy-to-move-and-use package. The 27-inch-diagonal stereo TV provides brilliant home theater performance, and the built-in DVD/Video CD/CD player and four-Head Hi-Fi VCR let you view DVDs, listen to CDs, and watch VHS videotapes without the need to connect wires among separate components.

Panasonic has included advanced audio features on this unit, such as an advanced virtual surround sound system that creates a surround effect using only two front speakers. The included digital optical outputs provide transmission of digital audio signals to Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, providing six discrete channels of exhilarating digital audio that deliver the ultimate sound experience.

The video features on the PVDM2791 have been designed to give you the clearest, sharpest picture possible from all video sources. The television features a 27-inch PanaBlack picture tube with a two-line digital comb filter that produces superb picture quality. Because it's darker than conventional tubes, The PanaBlack picture tube helps combat the picture-degrading effects of ambient light, so you get a picture with higher contrast and more accurate color reproduction.

The DVD player with multiple DVD viewing options lets you switch between multiple camera angles and up to eight different languages, or with subtitles up to 32 languages. The 4-head hi-fi VCR plays VHS tapes with outstanding picture quality at all tape speeds, and in stereo sound. The VCR also has convenient playback features, such as auto repeat mode, which will automatically rewind the tape when it hits the end and play it back again. The index search, commercial skip, and program-end search allow you to find desired locations on the tape easily and to skip unwanted ads at the touch of a button. The one-month/eight-program timer lets you program shows to record in advance, and with a 181-channel tuner, this TV will provide plenty of recording choices.

The PVDM2791 has been designed for ease of use and expanded functionality. For example, a built-in alarm clock contains a 30/60/90-minute sleep timer, a wake-up alarm, and a video/TV on-timer. And to make things easier, the clock and date are set automatically by receiving the Extended Data Service signal from your local PBS station. With 24-hour backup, it'll always be accurate, even after a power outage. Front audio-video jacks (with one earphone jack) make it easy hook up your camcorder or a second VCR into the TV for playback, and the icon menu system simplifies selecting menu options.

To complete the system, Panasonic has also added an FM radio with auto scan, a nine-preset station memory, and an onscreen display for station confirmation.

The Panasonic PVDM2791 is Energy Star compliant and comes with a universal illuminated remote control, which makes operation easy even in the dark.

Note: It is not possible to record from DVD/Video CD/CD to VHS tape using this unit.

We bought a Panasonic PV-DM2791, and we finally arranged to exchange for a different model. The worst thing about the TV is the VCR.From the very beginning, it didn't want to accept videotapes. At least 70% of the time, the tapes would "catch," and the VCR would spit them back out. When we finally got the tape into the VCR, it occasionally didn't record properly. It was very loud rewinding and fast-forwarding.Then there was the DVD player, which didn't seem to handle the sound on the DVDs very well.Half the time, we'd have to turn the volume all the way up to the max in order to hear the dialogue. We tried adjusting all the audio settings, but nothing helped.

In short, steer clear of this one...The model we exchanged it for is a Panasonic PV-DM2792, and so far, it's 100% better (not to mention less expensive!).

1-0 out of 5 stars Too heavy, No warranty
I currently own several Panasonic TV's and TV/VCR Combo's and they have been for the most part trouble free.In September 2001 I bought a 27" flat screen TV from Panasonic and it has been nothing but trouble as of April 2002.The major problem has been with support.Yes, I own a good deal of A/V gear including some Pro A/V gear, but the support problem has been with the warranty periods offered by Panasonic on large heavy screen TV's.Don't be fooled by the warranty you see here or at a retail store. The labor is only for 90 days, and they'll charge you big time for labor.

Almost everything I have from Panasonic has been trouble-free, but if you do have a problem, be prepared to throw away and re-purchase because it would cost less than the labor charges.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend against
I just bought this unit about 2 weeks ago and have been very disappointed. The picture quality is inferior to most other flat-screen TVs. The red colors are oversaturated (Yes, I adjusted the colors), the picture is grainy. And the DVD player is noisy as heck. I wish I'd gone with the Sony flatscreens, which had far better pictures. I was persuaded by the convenience of the triple-play features, which are cool because they save a lot of wiring hassle, but the cons outweigh the pros. If the unit were much cheaper, it might be worthwhile. But aside from using this as a kid's recreation-room unit, I'd veer away. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BE AWARE
    BUYERS, BE AWARE.
I had 2 DVD players made by Pioneer. They are nice machines... for a little over a year. Then the warranty expires. The problem these players seem to have has to do with poorly designed dual laser pick up (one - for DVDs, the other one - for CDs and Video CDs). The first player I had stopped playing CDs and Video CDs, I got the other one - this one stopped playing DVDs.
On the positive side - the picture is very good, so if you are after a short-term buy go ahead, otherwise look for another brand.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Pioneer DV-09
The DV-09 was awarded Stereophile's prestige's "Product of the year award" as well as many others and is in a class all its own for performance and reliability. Anyone that would post a negative review about a product that is widely regarded as the reference standard for progressive scan DVD players (In other words that which all others are measured against) is just plain ignorant. Please know what you are talking about or at the very least own one before posting a review. As far as reliability, every electronic manufacturer in the industry and yes even the most reliable experience some out of box failure rates. The DV-09 has been used commercially under everyday continues use i.e. writing comparison reviews since its introduction and has withstood the test of time. It is all the more reliable in a home environment.

1-0 out of 5 stars System board is not top notch
I purchased the dv-09 in November of 1999.Within 2 months it was at the shop.I had to wait a painful 3 months to have it replaced. The system board was fried...nothing but a standby light.
Two years and one month later...the same thing happened. I am very upset that a ($$$$) unit would go out like this.I am still waiting from Pioneer in response to my email.

You may be better off getting a cheaper model and replacing it every 2 years! Although the picture and quality of the system was top notch...the boards on these players are not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth the price
I have been happily using my FW900 12-24 hrs a day for over 3 years now. If I had to go back to using a 19 inch monitor, I would probably lose my mind. I previously owned a Viewsonic 21" monitor. This Sony GDM-FW900 is superior. Even a 21" monitor seems small now.

I find that the unit works best for text and picutres at 1600 x 1024 pixels resolution with True Color (32 bit. I have also used it at 1920 x 1200 pixels and High Color (16 bit) for more graphical work. I run at 85Hz refersh rate, which gives a nice, bright picture with minimal eye strain.

If you have never owned a large monitor, be advised that they are very sensitive to nearby elecrical devices that produce magnetic fields. It is best to allow at least 3 feet of separation between your monitor and other devices. If you decrease the distance, you will encounter distortion on the corners.Luckily, the Sony GDM-FW900 has a sophisticated menu that allows you to compensate for interfering magnetic fields.

Also be advised that larger monitors put out a LOT OF HEAT.Luckily, the Sony GDM-FW900 has circuitry to reduce power consumption.

This monitor is expensive (I paid $1700 for mine), but it is definitely worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's got the most OOOOOOHh factor.....
I have been using Sun's near flat 21" monitor, but when we finally started to have image problems with them (actually, they were getting really old..:o() I knew the time had come to pony up some bucks again for monitors. So after some research into what's out there today new and used, we found some 3 year old 24" tru-flat Trinitron's, off lease. I decided to give it a shot and picked up a handful of them.

Surprisingly, each one had a consistent picture either using graphics programs, viewing images, or even playing DVD's. While I can't speak on Sony's warranty support of the unit (not replacing defective new units with another new one, etc. etc.), I am extremely satisfied with each of the units I am working with. Since we weren't planning to shell out a few grand each for the latest widescreen L.C.D's, preferred to avoid a high interest lease payment, and flat our refused to downsize (perish the thought), we decided to roll the dice on these used Sony C.R.T.'s.

In retrospect, I'm glad we did. We have been extremely happy with this model Sony. In fact from my perspective, the image quality for hi-res graphics rendering (and the occasional game, off company time of course!)with the GDM-FW900 is superior to a comparable LCD.

I, like perhaps you, have also read on line that there might be a slight chance of an uneven or inconsistent image with this Sony monitor. So expecting the worst, I checked with a local repair shop on the cost of a CPU before I made this purchase. They told me a replacement would run me about $200. installed. Not bad considering the cake we saved.

While it's true that the big LCD's do take up far less desk space. And yes, it does take 2 people to move one of these bulky 95 pound things around. Do I also need to mention there's no warranty on 2nt owner monitors from Sony no matter how new they are?

Yet, I couldn't escape the wallet factor. While they weren't on fire sale by any means, I was able to keep nearly $1500 clams per monitor in the bank by moving in this direction. To me, while warranties and desk space are important, they ain't that important! (read I made my Xmas bonus and then some on this deal). And if one does happen to self destruct, it won't be that big of a deal to simply get it fixed locally. Plus, I don't have to worry about spending the big bucks to send a unit on a 4 week vacation to California for a warranty claim. Or even worse, have Sony charge me the freight to replace a defective one with a refurb.

Besides, I love the OOOOHh factor when someone sees them....There's nothing else like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost
At the risk of being that guy who comes in and pulls down the rating of a product that everyone else loves and gives "This suxors!" as a reason, I must relate my tale of woe. I will go into more detail than the normal dimwitted party pooper.

Witness the death of a dream. Three years ago, I took the plunge and bought the truly awe-inspiring Sony GDM-FW900 monitor: 24 inches of viewing goodness, 16:10 widescreen ratio, flat screen, and a Trinitron tube. Bliss! The admission price was a hefty $2300, but I couldn't imagine needing or wanting another monitor for at least five years, maybe more!

The honeymoon was out of a dimestore romance. I had the brains, she had the looks, and together we made a lovely couple. Widescreen movies and gaming (in those titles that supported it) was intoxicating. Carrying her mammoth-like girth over my third-floor threshold nearly killed me (literally), but otherwise we had the makings of a solid, long-lasting relationship.

Then came the blues. Sadness and heartache, yes, but, more importantly, a blue cast that crept into the image about eight months from purchase. No amount of tweaking the color calibration controls could remove it. Changing cards, cables, and computers proved futile. Over the next year, the problem worsened, with blacks growing lighter and lighter.

Finally, after playing Fade to Blue, Blue and White, and Bluehawk Down, I called Sony for a replacement. Still under warranty, I said. Refurbished units only, Sony said. You've got to be kidding, I said. Read the fine print, Sony said. Within a week, the refurbished model arrived at my door. I nervously hooked it up, hoping that I hadn't undergone life and death drama-hauling the replacement up three flights of stairs and lugging the original down three flights of stairs-in vain. Lo and behold, the blue cast was gone! There was a green cast instead.

And that's how it was for nearly a year. I decided I'd rather deal with the green than face another game of upstairs downstairs (seriously, the thing weighs 95 pounds and comes in a gigantic cardboard cube that makes it impossible to hold or get through normal doorways or stairwells; carrying the monitor to a third-floor walk-up is a friggin' trial of Hercules). Fiddling with the color controls only resulted in changing the green cast to brown. At least I had options.

Last night, the refurb died. Well, it might as well have. The screen is now blanketed in serene, fuzzy white, as if fresh powdered snow had fallen inside the monitor overnight. I was afraid I'd developed glaucoma until I looked away. It occassionally flashes red and green, giving the whole room the ambience of Studio 54. No amount of calibrating, screaming, hitting, or crying makes any difference. I am now beyond my original three-year warranty and the refurb's 90 day(!) warranty. Both my huge monitor and my huge pile of money have passed on. All that's left is to write the eulogy.

GDM-FW900, I hardly knew ye. No, that's not true. Ye were a piece of crap. ... Read more

Compaq iPAQ Digital Music Center MC-1 (with 20 GB Hard Drive)
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $799.99

    Editorial Review

Very few products can be called revolutionary, but Compaq makes a strong case for calling its iPAQ Music Center just that. We all know the compact disc, and most are familiar with MP3, streaming Internet audio, and similar digital music formats. But the iPAQ Music Center is the first product to synthesize these elements for use in your living room, integrating to the fullest extent possible your downloadable and streaming music with your CD library and hi-fi system.

The possibilities seem endless. A built-in CD tray and an impressively huge 20 GB hard drive let you burn and store around 400 CDs (or 5,000 songs) using MP3 compression (scalable from 96 to 320 Kbps), or around 40 CDs at full resolution. You can mix and match, too, reserving the best quality for your favorite music. In any case, storing your library on the MC-1 frees up your discs or tapes for car or portable use.

Two USB ports simplify the transfer of music files from your PC, and you can choose from RCA analog inputs or either optical or coaxial digital-audio inputs to pull music from cassette, minidisc, portable CD, VHS, DVD, or even LP (if you have an outboard phono preamplifier). Any way you cut it, you'll have an incredible selection at your fingertips.

The genius of the MC-1 is in the tools it offers to help organize your music. Chief among those is preloaded software called OpenGlobe, which handles everything from calling up artist and track info for your CDs to classifying and recommending Internet radio stations based on your preferences. There's a commercial element, as well: OpenGlobe will create "artist of the week" promotions based on your listening habits, and if you press the remote control's shopping-cart button while listening to an Internet-radio song, you'll have the option to buy that artist's music right then and there. (A credit card is required to shop, but not for general use.)

Other conveniences include the ability to classify the music you've stored on the MC-1 in an infinite number of groups and playlists, any way you like: by year, by artist, by genre, by tempo... you name it. The MC-1 will call up artist, track, and genre information for nearly any CD you insert, viewable on either your TV or the unit's two-line, 20-character display. All stored music info is fully editable, whether you want to alter the automatic genre settings or enter disc details for albums not recognized by the Music Center.

Of course, such a system can't work without an online lifeline; simplyplugging a standard RJ-11 phone line into the unit's rear panel does the trick. This connection provides not only music data, but music itself--the MC-1 lets you enjoy streaming Internet radio from thousands of sites around the world. Use the preconfigured sites/stations, or add your own.

You can use your existing Internet service provider, though be aware that the iPAQ Music Center does not currently support AOL or CompuServe. There's no additional monthly fee for the online access, and you can use dial-up access, cable, or DSL.

A television is required for set-up and recommended for enhanced usage, but once you're up and running, your Music Center can function like any other component in your stereo or home theater--apart from the fact that none of those others can do what this baby does. (You'll need the TV for Internet radio access, as well.)

As the MC-1 does not contain speakers or an amplifier, you'll need to connect it to an integrated amplifier or surround receiver, just as you would a CD or DVD player.

Other iPAQ Music Center features include the ability to read CD-ROM/CD-RW discs of MP3 files recorded on your PC; a Web Sync button, which takes you to your own Internet homepage, letting you change playlists and system settings remotely; a search feature using an onscreen guide to find specific music tracks; and a full-function remote control, which you can use anywhere in the room to operate not only your iPAQ Music Center, but certain functions on your TV and receiver as well.

The iPAQ Music Center will continually evolve, adding new features and services as they become available, such as S-Link CD changer control, a jack for which is already on the unit's back panel. Due to its upgradeable nature, Compaq warns that all hardware and software specifications are subject to change without notice.

Compaq is going all-out with its customer service for this product: the one-year limited warranty includes out-of-warranty, fee-based assistance; Compaq Extra Mile Service and Support (toll-free and electronic access to technical support for hardware diagnosis); integrated self-help; and preventive-care assistance to maintain peak product performance. If a problem arises, mail the unit to Compaq and Compaq will fix and return, covering shipping charges both ways. ... Read more

I bought this unit and sent it back today. It does not hook up to a network, it does not allow you to exchange from a portable to the hard drive and the tech support is .....for a lack of better words PATHETIC. They had me on hold for over 50 minutes screened through 2 techs and not one answer to my very simple 2 questions. I refuse to buy when their is poor tech support.

Hewlett Packard's 560 line of Jornada PDAs includes the 32 MB Jornada 565 and our 64 MB 568, members for the first batch of Pocket PCs to ship with Microsoft's new Pocket PC 2002 operating system.

On the surface, the Pocket PC 2002 OS looks much the same as the old OS. But there are a variety of enhancements to the stable of applications (like Word and Excel), new software such as MSN Messenger, added security and antivirus protection, and improved handwriting recognition.

The Jornada 568 features a CompactFlash Type 1 slot, so you can add more CF memory as well as hook up CF peripherals, such as modems or network cards. You'll probably want to expand on the memory front--64 MB is
