    PalmOne IIIxe Personal Handheld Organizer

    Editorial Review

The Palm IIIxe handheld builds on earlier Palm III models by offering more memory and more options. Its 8 MB of RAM (four times the memory of the popular Palm IIIe) and 2 MB of flash ROM keep track of all your appointments, memos, to-do items, expense items, and e-mail, plus you can add thousands of third-party applications. Although the Palm IIIe and IIIx models have ample memory for many users, the Palm IIIxe better supports users who rely upon their organizer for data-heavy operations.

The Palm IIIxe is more powerful than its predecessors, but it retains all of the Palm IIIx's and IIIe's convenience features. It measures a mere 4.7 by 3.2 by 0.7 inches and weighs 6 ounces. Backing up and exchanging information with desktop PCs and popular PIMs requires just a touch of a button on the included HotSync cradle. The infrared port allows you to instantly beam business card information, phone lists, data, and applications to other infrared-equipped devices. It also features a sharp backlit LCD screen, legible in both dim and bright light.

The contents of the Palm IIIxe box include the Palm IIIxe handheld, a CD-ROM with an extensive assortment of Palm Desktop software applications, two AAA batteries, a DB-25 adapter, a HotSync cradle, a manual, and a Getting Started quick guide. You may further customize your Palm IIIxe organizer with third-party add-on peripherals such as modems or voice recorders. This device runs for approximately two months on just two AAA batteries and comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars long time user..
I still use my palm IIIxe.. bought it in 2001 from Amazon.Actually this is my second one, my first one bit the dust, so I bought a refurb for $39.00 and it synced up with the 4.1 OS... it is great for addresses and calendar + todos... I also type memos with a keyboard when I'm in the field. Also this is used daily from am to pm... at night I dl avantgo and read news from the otherside of the world before bed...

I'm a broadcast engineer with high end editing systems that I built myself and I keep watching for something that I can replace this workhorse with, but no go so far!The long battery life and using nimh AAAs is the clincher, just can't beat the little rascle.

The HP jornada line with the instant on and long battery life have caught me eye, but I don't care for windows CE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality But No Frills PDA
I just bought this PDA used from Amazon and I'm pretty pleased with it.It's not color which I don't care about, but I am having a bit of a hard time seeing the screen well.I have had a terrible time getting it to synch correctly with Outlook and I couldn't get it to synch at all with Palm Desktop 3.5.3.No clue what the problem is, but after 2 hours trying to figure it out, I just gave up.I use Outlook Express, not Outlook and it took a lot of trial and error, but I can get it to synch names and addresses, but I can NOT get email to work since i don't use Outlook as my default mail handler.So..if that fits your situation and you want to synch for email and download from AVantgo, then do not buy this. However, I just want it for names and addresses to replace an old trusty Sharp Wizard that they don't make anymore.I really loved my Sharp though. What i like about the Palm IIIxe is that it's battery-operated (2 AAAs)- i honestly don't even fathom why people complain about this feature - they're nuts. The battery operated PDAs are the way to go because they can last forever in your purse and you don't have to remember to charge it.If the battery is dead while you're on the go - just run to a convenience store and buy AAAs.That simple. The Palm IIIxe seems pretty sturdy, but we'll see in the long run.Either with Palm or Sharp, this beats carrying around a paper and pencil organizer. The person I bought from on Amazon was great and honest too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most perfect PDA
I bought this item from eBay a couple of months ago for just £25 (under $50 USD) inc. postage and packaging. The device was in mint condition, with the exception of the missing flip cover (which I would later purchase from eBay)...and it came with OS 4.1.

I have to say: I love this device! I have experienced no problems with it whatsoever, and finding software for it is a breeze.

Graffiti was very easy to learn, and I can now write on my Palm as fast as I can on paper. But, if writing a lot...you can always purchase a pull-out keyboard for the device. I got one brand-new and shrink-wrapped for an amazing price, from eBay.

The Killer Ap has to be AvantGo. Almost everyday I'll sync my Palm to download the latest from The Times and CNET News.

I would most definitely consider the IIIxe a 'trusty' device...and from reading reviews about other devices from Palm...this is the most perfect. ... Read more

They were in perfect condition. Nicely price too

5-0 out of 5 stars Save you hundreds!
The styli that come packaged with ANY Palm handheld are the [not good] ones, no matter what. You really should save yourself from scratching your screen by buying these soft rubber tipped styli with the reset pin.In fact, with the Color IIIc screen, you can break your screen with that plastic tipped original one.Trust me you want this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Styli
After using the plastic m100 stylus, I upgraded to the Palm IIIc (nice), and ordered this along with it.Amazon has a great price on these fine quality styi.

-They have a firm, smooth, rubber head.(The plastic heads can get a nich in them then scratch the screen unknowningly, these don't)
-They are HEAVY so you can control input much easier.
-The reset pin is a useful extra. (Never search for something to hit that thing again!)
-A rubber tip absorbs impact of tapping your screen. (Increases screen life)
-Compared to the price of a new palm screen (especially color) these are ... CHEAP.

Its simple, if you want a quality stylus that will take care of that delicate silk-screen, I recommend buying these. You won't be disappointed at all.I promise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Palm Essential
If you have a laptop and travel, or you move from home and office with your Palm, this is an essential to keeping your data in synch. Period!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect terminal
Though I don't regularly sync my palm to any of my computers I can see how this cable would be of great use to those who sync to laptops simply because the cradle that comes with the Palm III and VII is more bulky than would be convenient to pack in a laptop case.I, myself, bought the cable as a plain and simple serial interface. If you're a techy doing work with servers or network equipment with serial management available this is the perfect solution.Just grab a terminal program (I use ptelnet), plug in this cable to your hardware and your palm and you're set.Simple and lightweight.Way better even than using a laptop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful product
With the Palm Hotsync Cable, I am able to sync my IIIxe at home and at the office. It is just the right length, plugs into my PDA easily, and is out of sight/out of the way when not in use.If you have a laptop, this is a must-have product.A great product at a great price. ... Read more

PalmOne III Leather Belt Clip Case

In the Wild West, no cowboy would be caught dead without a six-shooter close at hand. In the wild world of modern business, 3Com's PalmPilot and Palm III have replaced Colt's legendary pistols as the essential survival tools. So why risk leaving your organizer behind? The Leather Belt Clip Case snuggly encases 3Com PalmPilots and Organizers (not just the Palm III), and attaches firmly to any belt. Because of the small size of all Palm tools, the case doesn't interfere with sitting, nor does it restrict movement. Now you just need to work on that quick draw. ... Read more

    3-0 out of 5 stars A good case, but a word of caution . . .
I have enjoyed this case very much. It's belt clip has a little hook at the bottom, making it very unlikely that the case will come off of your belt.I have three criticisms of the case.Other than these three things, I love it. The first problem is that it's closure is velcro. As anyone familiar with velcro knows, it is easy to mess velcro up if the hook side comes in contact with cloth. The result is that the case gradually closes less securely. But if you don't wear sweaters or anything that might clog up the hooks, you have no worries with this problem. The second problem is that the very hook which makes it so secure on a belt makes it very uncomfortable without a belt.It can dig into your hip.To me this is very minor.I just adjust its position such that it is no longer uncomfortable. The third problem is what burns me up.The mechanism that holds the belt clip on my case recently (after about 5 months) bent. This made the belt clip MUCH less secure. The case can sort of twist about now. It's a good case -- extemely convenient -- but be aware that it's not built to last long unless you treat it carefully.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fair case, belt clip is pitiful!
I ordered one of these from Palm shortly after I got my Palm IIIxe.Unlike what other reviewers have said, my unit fit snugly, as expected.I found, though, that within a few days, the clip had broken, and the case could swing in just about any direction but upside-down.I could tell that something had broken off, but I didn't have the expertise to fix it & resew the leather. So I sent it back to Palm for a refund.

Now my Palm stays in my pocket. It makes it a little more vulnerable in some situations, but it beats using this case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect belt case for the Palm IIIxe ? It was for me.
If you have looked around for the ideal case for the Palm IIIxe like I did, then you know how frustrating this can be. Most seasoned Palm owners I talked to have gone through two to four cases before finding one that suited their individual needs. Many of these owners had ended up with this case as the best solution when one wanted to carry their Palm III in a "hands-free" fashion.

This is a well-made belt/clip case, and you have the choice of using the belt loop or the metal clip to secure it to your person. I've even used the sturdy metal clip to fasten it conveniently to the strap of my notebook PC when going from car to office.

The black leather is soft, and the case is lined so that you can slide the PDA out easily - once you've broken it in. I had heard that it was hard to remove the PDA from this case, so when I got mine, I simply inserted my Palm IIIxe into the case with its flip cover attached. Then I carefully eased two floppy disks into the case as well (do this carefully) and left it for the weekend. Three days later, I could slide my IIIxe in and out the case without any problems, flip cover and all. If you want it to slide even easier, use it without the flip cover, as there is an interior panel designed to protect the screen.

The top-loading lid to this case is reversed so that it will not inadvertently snag on things, and is Velcro fastened. There is just enough light padding to protect the Palm device from light bumps and accidents, but just remember that this is not an armored case.

There are a couple of other leather cases with clips on the market, but if you do the research you'll find that some of the owners have complained about the clip breaking off. This doesn't appear to be a problem with this case.

If you're looking for extreme portability without a lot of frills, then this may be your best choice. Do yourself a favor though, and read the other reviews here as well! ... Read more

PalmOne Portable Keyboard for Palm m100/m105, III Series, and VII Series Handhelds
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

It's always a wonderful feeling when gadgets work seamlessly and live upto their plug-and-play promise. The Palm portable keyboard is such a gadget. It's possibly the best hardware add-on for Palm devices currently on themarket--it installs easily and helps you increase your Palm productivity.

Installation of the Keyboard application onto the Palm handheld is easilyaccomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simplyadd it to the Install Tool on Windows, or the Install Handheld Files in the MacHotSync Manager.)

Once the app was installed, we were ready for testing at a meeting. We saunteredin and unfolded the keyboard in a flourish--clicking it open from its foldedposition, laying it flat, sliding the keyboard parts together (it's broken intothirds for folding), and attaching our m100 in a matter of seconds. Theattendees at the meeting were suitably wide eyed and impressed with our JamesBondian device. (This model of the Palm Portable Keyboard also accommodates PalmVII and Palm III series handhelds--even the Palm IIIc. A separate model isavailable for the Palm V.)

But the Palm portable keyboard is more than a flashy toy--it's a productivityjuggernaut that has some of the best keyboard action we've ever experienced. Thekeys are not soft and mushy like other keyboards we've tested for handhelds.Instead, they're a bit on the tight side but with a lot of give. Also, the morewe used the keyboard, the more we found ourselves shying away from tapping thescreen to navigate through a screen or perform actions such as switchingapplications or opening up the Details section of a Memo or Address Bookcontact. With the Palm keyboard, you can do virtually all your work withouttaking your fingers off the keyboard.

The keyboard includes custom buttons for the built-in Palm applications (DateBook, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad). Several keys have added functions, such as the ability to open up the Appsscreen, scroll through a screen, or turn on the backlight. You can also customize your own shortcuts list of applications loaded onto your Palm handheld. This is done using the Keyboard app, and you can assign the number keys 1 through 9 (but not 0). After making our designations, pressing Cmd-1 immediately took us to our favorite diversion--YahtC--during a lull in our meeting.

All told, we have nothing but praise for the Palm portable keyboard, not justfor the ease of inputting text but also for changing the way we use our Palmhandheld. Since we started using the keyboard, we now often travel without anylaptop, confident that any degree of writing or note taking during meetings canbe handled by our Palm alone. (It should also be noted that we typed this reviewon our m100 while sitting comfortably at our local coffee shop.) If you are aheavy Palm user, the Palm portable keyboard is an essential and very cool tool.--Agen G.N. Schmitz

5-0 out of 5 stars Palm Key board
I never really used my palm until I bought this key board. It is great I use it all the time now.The keyboard was like new and works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!
I really like this item.I like it for school a lot. When I do my reports it is a very cool tool to have. The shortcuts are cool too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this!
I have had my Palm for about 2 years and bought a keyboard when it was only a couple of months old. I took that one back because it was sold without software. I decided not to buy another one because I didn't want to have to run up to the computer store again.

I'm a journalist, so I'm using my Palm daily now and am always having to pull up the keyboard on the screen. This get's a be a pain when I'm writing a list of interview questions or writing down who I talked to or emailed in a contact log.

The keyboard took less than 5 minutes to install, pop in the CD and add the keyboard will be installed next time you sync your Palm with the PC.I was shocked that it really was that simple.

When I finally have to replace my Palm, I'm definitely going to get another keyboard. This one saves me so much time. ... Read more

A little less than i expected. Not necessary a good look for such a nice piece of equipment. Made the Palm Pilot look pretty cheap. But if you really, really need a change of pace, they are not the worst product you could buy. Plus they give you 3 extra stylists and Graffiti Alphabet stickers.

If you really need to replace the shade that came with your Palm III, get this product.Otherwise, it is totally frivolous and has no real electronic value. It's a shame that Amazon will ship it at the price ofelectronics, though.

Seller took a while to respond to e-mails, but item was shipped fast and everything was as promised.Great job!!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is A Good Accessory If You Use Eudora
This little modem runs on two AAA batteries! It's actually somewhat awesome to hear it chirp when making a connection. The software, MultiMail is OK but does not support file attachments to email. A better free Internet software suite is Eudora for the Palm. Eudora also supports Web browsing. You can hotsync your Eudora email for the Palm with the Eudora email for the PC.

The modem is only 3300 baud but that is adequate for email and occasional Web browsing. Over all, a pretty good value.

2-0 out of 5 stars AOL users should think twice
I bought this to go with my Palm IIIc, after reading about free software like AvantGo that lets you surf the Internet and download newspapers, etc. from any phone line, after connecting with your ISP.However, I couldn't get AvantGo to work with my ISP, which is AOL.I e-mailed AvantGo, and they replied that AvantGo does not work with AOL (which conflicts with what is on their website).Palm support confirmed this, e-mailing me, "Please note that you cannot use any internet surfing application on your Palm handheld with AOL."Then I twice e-mailed Palm to ask which ISP would work instead, and they sent completely useless, stupid replies that had nothing at all to do with my question. Finally I called and spoke to someone who said that any other ISP should work, it's only AOL that doesn't.So now I have to select and register (and pay for, if I don't find a good free one) a second ISP to make full use of my Palm modem. On the other hand, the AOL e-mail software that came with the modem works great.I can type e-mails on the train on the way home, and send them quickly over my phone line when I get home. But if I can't get the Internet surfing working soon, I'll be returning this, as I didn't buy it only for e-mail. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stylus
This one is a keeper--6 months of heavey use. I want one just like it with a pen, but can't find one nearly as good. Good weighting, fits like glove in the sylus slot in my IIIxe, and recognition is excellent. All thumbs up. ... Read more

Palmpilot: The Ultimate Guide, 2nd Edition
    by David Pogue

    Paperback (28 June, 1999)

    Editorial Review

The best general-interest book about that most-adored Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) clearly came about from a lot of thought and effort. With a book richer in facts and better focused than the original edition, PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide shows David Pogue's thoughtful consideration of his dedicated audience.

Of course, Pogue includes information on the Palm IIIx, Palm V, and Palm VII. (And it's substantive information too, not the jive stuff--derived from press releases--that many books pass off as "coverage.") He also shows how to take advantage of recent advancements in Macintosh connectivity and brings in a Linux expert to show how to HotSync under that environment. He pays extra attention to the burgeoning universe of AportisDoc publications and helps untangle the confusion over getting your e-mail via your Palm.

In addition to how-to information--both basic stuff that everyone needs to know and cool tricks that will surprise more experienced Palm users--Pogue catalogs a lot of Palm add-on hardware and software. The CD-ROM contains more than 3,100 programs for PalmOS. True, they're all on the Web (possibly in newer form), but this disc earns its keep by making it a cinch to screen more Palm software than you'd ever care to download. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Too old now, but good when it was new
I like this book, or rather, I loved it when it was new, but now that I have a Tungsten T3 I have no use for this book. I agve it away for free with my old Palm Vx to a friend.

It was a great book, but if your Palm is anything newer than Palm Vx you don't want it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide...a brilliant start!
This book provided me with a great deal of insight into just how the Palm operates and how I can use it to do what I need it to do.I found it helpful in the areas of importing/exporting graphics; what models are expandable and which are not.I knew a lot of this info. from just have the Palm handheld, but there were many particulars I knew nothing of that the book helped me understand.I recommend it for those who just got their Palm handheld or those who desire a more intimate knowledge of.Sadly, I don't use the CD-ROM as much as I could but the disc is organized well with an easily understood navigation system.

5-0 out of 5 stars The CD maybe is it's best mate...and your great deal...
I bougth this book and when I started to explore the CD that comes with it...I really wondered my self as hell!!!!!!!. This CD has a lot of programs(3500) and many of 'em are a beauty. I love CD more than just the book . I love my palm and when my palm get broken I ?d buy another one, but is hard to loss your palm they are maden for long life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars liked it, until I got to know it
I, like many other, loved this program when I first got it.Made food journaling easy (and I believe that is key to my weight loss of 60 lbs), it also helped me to learn about the nutritional content of foods(and led me to buy the book Food Bible, by Judith Wills, which I do recommend). But the company that put out the product has dropped the ball.I got a new Palm Zire and it is not compatible.I emailed the tech support and they told me that they were working on updating the software. They said it would be ready by December 2003.Since then I have not heard from them at all.I hope they get their act together, or I hope someone better comes out with a better product.Until then, I suggest buying the Food Bible and investing in a notebook, pen, and calculator.

1-0 out of 5 stars down fall of vivonic company
I purchase the vivonic software 3 years ago and love the product and would rate the software at a 5 star. the problem I have ran into is the suport of this software. When I purchased the software the teck suport was very helpfull when needed for the first year. After that they did away with their 1800 phone number and will very seldome if at all answer ther eMails. I also cant get a response back from them on this program working with a handheld PC. If you purchas this product and dont need teck suport you will love it but if there needed good luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars New Palm? No Vivonic
Like some of the other customers here, I've been using Vivonic (happily) for about two years but when I installed it on my new Tungsten C...nothing."Tech Support" via the Vivonic site produces no response. It's a great program if you're using the Palm OS 4.0 or less, but not compatible with the newer models. ... Read more
